Jennifer Hudson at ‘Call me Crazy’ Premiere

Posted on April 17, 2013

We really, really tried to convince ourselves on this one. We’re not entirely sure why.

Jenifer Hudson attends the premiere of ‘Call me Crazy’ in West Hollywood, California in a leopard-print blouse paired with a polka-dot mini-skirt and Saint Laurent ankle-strap pumps.

We suppose we wanted to like it because the shape really works for her and because the diva-craziness of it all has a certain sort of appeal to us. But in the end, there’s just way too much going on here. Even if we could accept a leopard print paired with a polka dot -which we might, under the right circumstances – the weird cuffs on the sleeves, with FIVE buttons AND a zipper; the totally unnecessary lapels framing the equally-as-unnecessary bra flash; the buttons on the skirt; the heavy ankle straps; the shimmery hosiery – it’s just overloading the whole look. This just isn’t working for us. But she should take it to a seamstress and have her make 5 copies in various colors, with the details simplified. The shape really does work like gangbusters for her.

      Yikes, no convincing here. UGH

    • gabbilevy

Mine eyes! Jenny, love, slap whoever told you these two patterns go and fire them.

      • tereliz

The worst part is I think it’s a DRESS. Not separates that should never have been paired together. Someone did this on purpose and then mass produced it. Ye gods!

        • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

          Ohmygod, you’re right. WHY? WHY?!?!?!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=49702581 Susan Bullard Mayer

I also like the shape and the cartoony vibe. But other than that, fug.

    • PastryGoddess

Never has a step and repeat backdrop seemed more appropriate

    • alyce1213

The pattern mixing is just not working here; it’s making no statement and looks like a careless mashup.
      The silhouette is indeed excellent,

    • Miss_Led

It is for “Call me Crazy,” after all…

      • AlexisPayne

Talk about dressing for the venue….

      • MikeW_Vegas

Seems like the last few “step and repeats” we’ve seen in front of this backdrop have been the same WTF-ery.

    • hughman

If you cross your eyes and zone out you can see 3-D dolphins when you look at her.

      • maggiemaybe

        Brilliant. Love you.

      • andreawey

haha she’s hypnotizing us…….. “you are under my power……..join Jenny Craig (or weight watchers or whatever)

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! You win the internet for today!

    • jw_ny

is this RC like crazy hat day at my niece’s school?

It’s like she and Jennifer Aniston, and whomever else, decided to come to the event in crazy attire.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

      Call me crazy? OK…

    • Funkykatt

Her outfit has given me a headache.

    • CMCH

It’s bad all around, but I’m really distracted by how wrong the hose are. Why’d she even go there? She’s in LA and has great legs, fergoshsakes.

    • http://www.facebook.com/isadora.paiva.7 Isadora Paiva

What you said, plus her boobs look like fried eggs.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Totally agree with you guys. And man does that shape put the Va Va into her Voom!

    • Sarah

In addition, is there not a LARGER polka dot insert on the side of the skirt? What’s that all about? It had better not be some sort of after-the-fact gusset for more room, because she’s normal-sized and doesn’t need it. If she does, then that alone should have ruled the garment out. Leopard, cream, AND two sizes of dots? TOO MUCH.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

You are so right. Those inset side panels in an even bigger dot pattern are Kah ray zee!

    • tereliz

I did a scroll-down “Hey, that blouse is a cute shapeJESUSFUCKLEOPARDPOLKADOTLAPELHELL!” With house arrest shoes.

No thanks. But wouldn’t this be amazing if it were all black with contrasting buttons?

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

That was exactly my response too.

    • DaveUWSNYC

Bra looks like a ’55 Caddy – Dagmars.

    • Chartreusite

I was about to say: JHud, I will call you crazy. Thought that it was super busy the minute I saw the pictures. (I take pride in the fact that, after a couple of years of reading TLo, I can assess a look and what’s working/not working for it Thanks, guys!)

    • disqus_hbdPAeXyee

      It makes my eyes hurt.

    • http://twitter.com/steeenie Christine Hart

Not only is it a good shape but it FITS too, you might have liked it because of that.

      • alyce1213

Yes, I’m not accustomed to seeing her in clothes that fit. She looks even more slender when her clothes don’t pull and squeeze.

      • http://www.facebook.com/agatha.guilluame.7 Agatha Guilluame

I loved it but I didn’t like it and you just explained why. It’s a good shape for her AND it fits.

      • formerlyAnon

        YES

      • drdarke

@twitter-19271979:disqus – yes, it’s a lovely shape for her, and I may be in the minority but I love the hosiery (the reason more women should wear sheer stockings/pantyhose is because they smooth out the bumps and scrapes of bare legs). I even kind of like the shoes, though the right venue for them might trends closer to “S-M Play Party” than “Motion Picture Premiere….”

But – the polka-dot skirt and the leopardskin top and the wrist cuffs that look like they belong on some superheroine’s costume, because they can probably deflect bullets…? No – those really don’t work

    • http://twitter.com/Mlle_D Donyelle

She needs to send Andre Leon Talley a note of apology and a termination letter to her current stylist.

    • Introspective

I absolutely hate this. That is all.

    • kittenwithaquip

Was this designed by Beyonce’s mom? It’s doing some really crazy things to JHud’s bewbs.

    • nannypoo

I don’t like this for her at all. And here’s a peeve, maybe not a pet peeve but a peeve nonetheless: What’s the deal with this silly two-handed wave that all the ladystars are doing? One hand is not enough? Not just Hi but Hi Hi?

    • lobsterlen

      It literally made me nauseous.

      • Coco Cornejo

Leopard skin next to dots made me dizzy.

Other than that, the designer must have gotten a really good deal on all those notions and felt like they all must be used. Oh my! I just realized this is separates, not a dress. My head spins even more.

    • Sara__B

How can something so ugly be so flattering? She looks horrible and fabulous all at the same time!

      • MilaXX

I was beginning to think I was the only one who thought that.

    • ThaliaMenninger

Those shoes are just pitiful. Cheap Christmas trash.

    • BrooklynBomber

      God, no!!!
I do, however, appreciate the hose.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=58004461 Melissa Cornichons

i can’t get past the cleavage contouring

      • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

It really doesn’t help that her bra is somehow off-center.

    • SugarSnap108

The way her arms are perfectly framing the “Call Me Crazy”‘s in the first pic says it all.

    • butterflysunita

Jennifer Hudson, you are beautiful and radiant. Now please go change–your outfit hurts my eyes.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josefina-Madariaga-Suárez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

I think J-Lo saw this dress and found it too much.

    • formerlyAnon

You’ve all heard me whine about animal prints being abomination [in my eyes], right? Much to my amazement, this looks SO GOOD on her that I am going to say that I could laud her for it but for: 1) visible bra and 2) hideously too heavy and unflattering ankle strap.

I would totally go with all the rest of the craziness if not for those two things, just because it looks so good on her.

    • http://www.facebook.com/AdriannaGrezak Adrianna Grężak

The problem is that it all looks a bit too cheap. Looks like something that she chose because it fits well

    • marilyn

She could wear that in a casino in Vegas.

    • MilaXX

I think the outfit is really ugly yet I think it works for her in a drag queen kind of way.

    • schadenfreudelicious

wow, just how many Chicos moments are happening on that outfit?

    • samo_samo

Meh, not crazy about this look, but I love her level of commitment to it.

    • Introspective

i absolutely *hate* this. That is all.

    • Jenna

Kinda dig the shape… but even that is not quite right (I desperately want to walk behind her and yank that skirt an inch or two lower as it rides up in the front-middle of her waist). But for the fact alone it isn’t 2 sizes too small on her (which I don’t get. She is a tiny little thing. So why does she insist on dressing like her ballooned after a fitting and had no other options so she just forced the sausage casing on?) makes it still better then most of the things she has worn in the past 2 YEARS.

    • MzzPants

Nuh-uh. Polka dots and animal print.

    • http://robot-heart.tumblr.com heartbot

The shape looks fantastic on her, and I want to like it because she just looks so happy and confident in it. :)

    • wisdomy

The only thing worse than Suntan L’eggs on a white woman? Suntan L’eggs on a black woman.

    • Imasewsure

Love the shape (but button up girl) and actually love these shoes on her. Not as bad a look as it should be considering how awful it all is

    • http://twitter.com/carelessriver Caterina Maria

The prints are fighting each other for domination so hard that they took each other out and all we’re left with is BABYHEADS, plus her hosiery is making her look about the same shade as my mother when SHE wears hosiery, so. That is just a mess. Call you crazy? Nah, Jen, but your stylist needs hir head examined…

    • Beverly Kozma

      No, Jennifer. No.

    • jilly_d

      NO NO NO NO NO

    • Rand Ortega

To quote Tim Gunn: That’s a lotta look!

    • Nonmercisansfacon

      No J-Hud. No.

    • BayTampaBay

I think she looks great and she is really working it. The proportions are perfect for her curves. She DOES NOT even look the least bit heavy in Polka Dots!?!?!? Three snaps in the “Z” formation!

You go girl and then send that outfit to me so I can wear as separates!

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I instinctively said out loud “oh, GOD NO” when I saw this. It’s too much…everything. And the cuffs (plus the shoulder pads) make her arms look abnormally long.

    • http://figgylicious.blogspot.com/ Figgy

      Plus, total wonkboob.

    • Trisha26

      Whore-id.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Girl, no. Hell no. Not for any reason. Just no.

    • Carina Green

It looks like she’s wearing two ankle monitors.

    • conniemd

Hard to like leopard print except as detailing, but not a whole piece. Keep the shape and make it a plain red top and it would kick ass.

    • YoungSally

Jackee called — she wants her dress back –

      Sorry.

    • http://twitter.com/amndad amanda lynn

her body seems thin, yes, but… misshapen… or is it just me?
      also: horrible tits.

    • http://twitter.com/DarthJaeda Jaeda Laurez

      Nope. Just no.

    • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

      Call me dizzy. :(

    • e jerry powell

It would interest me if it were a dress and through some Escherian twist the leopard morphed into polka dots. That would have been cool. But as separates, it’s giving me seizures.

    • bellafigura1

Going against the tide here, but I kinda like it. The sleeves (called mutton, I think?) are what’s ruining the look, and the sheer hose /shoe combo isn’t helping, but I think she looks great!

    • http://twitter.com/urban_gypsy Tess Danesi

Maybe it’s because I just had two sips of coffee, but those are the kind of polka dots that hurt my eyes. I wish I didn’t have to look away because, as T-Lo said, the shape is amazing on her.

If she was following the know your venue rules, she wins because this is certainly one CRAZY look.

    • Cathy S

Call Me Crazy but I really like this. Even with all the crazy details. I think it works.

    • Angela_the_Librarian

LOL, I’m not sure if it’s genius or misguided to wear something so clash-y to the premiere of something called “Call me Crazy.” I actually think this could work (including the sleeves) if the top was either a solid color or continued the polka dots. I don’t like animal prints 99% of the time, and it really doesn’t work with this look.

    • jetpackdino

      Looks cheap.

    • Indigo54

      Ridiculous from head to toe

    • SHAHRAM REJVANI

love it, SHE LOOKS AMAZING… this is FAUSTO PUGLISI FOR UNGARO…….love love

    • http://twitter.com/susanpcollier Susan Collier

She looks like she’s in head-to-toe Kardashian Kollection.

    • lrhoff

      I need an aspirin….

    • emchicago

if it didn’t have the buttons on the skirt and the ankle wraparound on the shoes, it would work

    • ccm800

the lines around her mouth since the weight loss have got to be addressed – they are so strange. They are like sound waves or ripples in a puddle. They are all I ever see when I Look at her face.

    • kathrineb

Agreed. Not the only issue but a big one: those cuffs are TERRIBLE.

    • http://remedialstitcher.blogspot.com/ Sara Leigh Merrey

The skirt and shoes with a simpler top/blouse/sweater would have been much better. I really like the skirt and shoes.

    • http://twitter.com/dalriadane dalriadane

Yay, hosiery is coming back for sure!
