January Jones in Zara

Posted on April 24, 2013

January Jones’ high-school mean-girl bitchface is a thing of such utter beauty and perfection that we are sometimes struck dumb by it, as if the really popular cheerleader just passed us in the hallway and sneered at us.

‘Mad Men’ star January Jones attends The Paley Center for Media presentation of “Mad Men” season 5 in New York City in a Zara blouse and Textile by Elizabeth and James jacket paired with Helmut Lang leather leggings, Christian Louboutin pumps, and IDC earrings.

TEXTILE by Elizabeth and James Sid Denim Jacket. Helmut Lang leather Leggings. Christian Louboutin Diptic Pump.

Of course, in this case, the really popular cheerleader is dressed a little bit like she’s crazy, but we all pretend not to notice, lest she make a cutting remark about our acne or our muffin tops.

Everything about this makes us laugh and clap. It’s such a perfect combination of “I’m a pretty ballerina!” and “I’m going to run away with a guy who has a motorcycle as soon as I turn 16!”  topped off with a face that says “I hate all of you so much.” In many ways, it’s the perfect JanJo casual look; bitchy, sexy, and a little juvenile.

Kiernan Shipka must look at her every once in a while, raise a teenage eyebrow and think, “Really? This style amateur is supposed to play my mom? Pfft,” and go back to flipping though her Vogue.

How does one not walk out of those shoes?

“It’s such a perfect combination of “I’m a pretty ballerina!” and “I’m going to run away with a guy who has a motorcycle as soon as I turn 16!” topped off with a face that says “I hate all of you so much.” ”

What else is there to say, because, this ^ is everything.

The only thing I don’t like are the shoes. Give that bitch face JJ. Give it, we love and we want some more of it.

  • merciblahblah

I LOATHE open-toed booties (seriously – if it’s cold enough for boots, I don’t want my toes sticking out – I’m crazy like dat), so couple that loathing with my irrational dislike of January Jones, and I can barely stand to look at this.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I can so imagine Kiernan doing precisely that. (snorting behind hand)

  • Little_Olive

“High-school mean-girl bitchface” is perfect. And I think she looks great.

  • Sobaika

Not sold on the denim jacket and I wish the top were a smidge longer or shorter, but I’m not entirely mad at this.

  • Tatiana Luján

This clothes look so much worse together than they should.

  • Democracy Diva

Did you guys just solve the mystery of why I don’t like J.Jones? Is it really just because she reminds me too much of being mocked by bitchy cheerleaders in high school? YOU WIN, TLO.

  • formerlyAnon

Kiernan speculation? Gold, gentlemen. Pure gold.

I think she looks ridiculous – she’s hit that “age inappropriate in a silly way” note that Madonna occasionally dips into, and that’s a lot harder to do at Ms. Jones’ age.

  • Mrs. Julien

I think her hostility is mostly for the shirt.

  • JosephLamour

She basically looks like Sandy Olsen from the bottom and Becky Conner from the top.

  • Patricia Gillett

Kiernan Shipka must look at her every once in a while, raise a teenage eyebrow and think, “Really? This style amateur is supposed to play my mom? Pfft,” and go back to flipping though her Vogue.

Wow, I really hope that happens. Because it should.

She can bitchface me all she wants but at least I know that she probably paid $500 for my $20 Old Navy denim jacket. (And it doesn’t even fit her.)

  • AmeliaEve

They actually have an ankle strap that’s hidden by the leggings. Which makes me wonder even more why they are described as “pumps,” when they seem to be some oddball combination of sandals, booties, and mary janes.

I actually kinda like the outfit. It’s very rock and roll for her.

  • kipper

googling how old JJ really is : 35… yeah, too old for this, but, could have worked in a slutty way with out any shirt at all, bra and BUTTONED jean jacket, or no jacket at all in a ” yeah I spent the night at Trevor’s ” early morning OJ run sort of way.

  • Pennymac

    ^^THIS!

  • MilaXX

I actually like the look but it belongs on someone younger. They would wear it to the MTV awards. Find one of the many 20 somethings on FOX, CW or ABCfamily and give them this outfit.

    • formerlyAnon

      Exactly my view.

    • RebeccaKW

I think it could work on January, but I think it needs some tweaking. That lacey shirt needs to go along with those hideous booties. But pants, jacket, hair, and makeup are working on her, for me.

      • MilaXX

Good point. With a different top, this could work. I don’t really hate the booties.

        • RebeccaKW

In the pic of just the shoe, it’s not so bad. On her foot, though, it looks like it’s peeling off.

        • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

The shirt is definitely throwing the proportions off, although it looks a little better from the side than it does straight on. It’s like she couldn’t decide if she should wear a shirt or a skirt, so she went for something in between. I don’t mind a tiny jacket with a longer shirt underneath. I’ve done it too. But you still have to get the proportion right.

The black bra under the sheer top looks like she’s trying too hard. There’s just too much going on here.

        • drdarke

Agreed, @MilaXX:disqus and @RebeccaKW:disqus – the jean jacket and the leather pants are fine with her styling, but the blouse and those ankle boots Just Don’t Work with the rest of it.

Also, would it kill Ms.Jones to smile occasionally…?

      • MaryAtRealityTea

Yeah, it’s the shirt and the booties that kills the look most of all. Everything else looks OK. I love leather and denim together so maybe I’m biased. A less fussy Marant shirt would be great with this.

  • MilaXX

It’s not a bad look, but it’s too young for her.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000905542323 Rhonda Shore

I love this look and it doesn’t matter how old she is because she looks SOOO fabulous!

  • Catiline

Fully in touch with her inner Heather Chandler.

    • ailujailuj

Chandler. RIP. Bitch genius. Wish JJ could act as well as she wears her bitchface.

  • mhleta

This outfit does not suit her personality, or my perception of it, at all. Also, the hair and makeup are too prissy for this. Hate the shoes. I’d like this look better on someone a little earthy and wild, like Cheryl Crow or Edie Brickell. Strange, you’re saying it looks too young, but I’m imagining it on someone older.

  • http://www.facebook.com/conysoledad Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

Everything was quite fine (if we don’t consider the black bra under a white shirt) until those ugly shoes. They should be burned.

  • Angela Langdale

I love this look, and it’s one you will see in abundance if you go to art galleries in Texas! HA! Plus I am about 15 years her senior. That being said, she still looks cute, but very dressed down, in my opinion.

  • Janet B

My teen would wear this (except the shoes – “too weird”).

  • teensmom99

Sorry but I think she looks great.

  • tereliz

Meh. She looks like a third-rate style blogger from 2010 with that topknot.

And I know it’s Zara, but the mix is looking a bit cheap to me. I hate those shoes, but it’s the jacket bringing the rest of the look down, giving her lacy shirt with visible bra combo a Coachella vibe. Plus, the sleeves are awkward.

I want to see her in a cool, adult, edgy jacket instead. LOVE that lipcolor. Pinteresting the pic of her makeup here, fyi. ;)

  • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

None of these things go together. Throw out the pants and shoes that are wrong with the top and the jacket. I can almost like the blouse sticking out of the jacket until I look at the sleeves at the wrist. This is how I look when I’m trying to wash dishes with my pajama sleeves peeking underneath my robe. Very awkward.

What happened to her character? She rarely appears, and when she does, she still looks frumpy from a pregnancy/weight gain. Yet, here she is above, looking as svelte and perfect as ever–except in her clothes that she pulled out of her closet at the last minute.

  • http://twitter.com/FlyoverFi FlyoverFi

Anyone else reminded of Ross Geller’s leather pants episode of Friends?

    • http://thishotoldbroad.blogspot.com/ Sara Leigh Merrey

Not until you mentioned it. Hahahahaha.

  • stubbornthoughts

Love the pants and the shoes. The jacket would’ve been better with a light white tee or something. But noooooooo…someone wanted to borrow the family’s 17th century baby nightie. I can smell the cedar from here.

  • http://www.facebook.com/judy.julian77 Judy Julian

I’m becoming bored by her, and that’s not good.

  • http://robot-heart.tumblr.com heartbot

Maybe this is because I’m just coming off the Lena Dunham post and my eyes are still burning from all the unflattering, but I think this is cute. My only gripe is the shoes.

  • mmc2315

I’m not on board with the shoes. Love the jacket. Love the pants. The blouse is throwing me off.

    • http://thishotoldbroad.blogspot.com/ Sara Leigh Merrey

Agreed. Also don’t like the hair.

  • 3boysful

I could get behind this except for the bottom of the top/very short tunic. I love the medallions in the top, but wish it were lined (prudish that way) and had something besides the limp ruffle at the bottom.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

There are elements of this that I like, but none of them GO together. And I LOATHE sheer white tops with black bras. HATE. I also hate the booties. And that looks like the denim jacket I wore in middle school. So let me revise my statement… I like the top, and I like the pants, but perhaps not together.

  • Karen Maslowski

I detest that kind of open-toed bootie. However, if there is a time of year appropriate for such footwear it’s right now.

    • Qitkat

I ought to hate the booties, but I kind of love them. Along with the heart-shaped watch.
Irrationally, I think she looks cute here, and cringe-worthy at the same time.

  • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

I don’t know what it is about JanJo, but I love everything about her. Irrationally I hold a grudge against skinny, white, blond women, but just as irrationally, her allure is strong. I’m still not over the fabulous David Bowie hair and Roland Mouret gown! I think part of it is that she doesn’t seem real to me. I love the bitch face, but I can never imagine her saying anything of consequence.

  • TheDivineMissAnn

I never took JanJo as a woman who would wear a heart-shaped watch, but there it is! Best part of the outfit.

  • BrooklynBomber

This is not a look that deserves “in” anything (as in, “in Zara” or anything else). Pure on-my-way-to-ballet-class insanity.

  • TheDivineMissAnn

This^ I never understood the concept of open-toed boots.

  • awesomesabrina

I think a different jacket would make this OK. Maybe black or electric blue. Also I think the “bitchface” intros for JJ are getting old. I think she maybe is just uncomfortable at these pressers and not a huge smiler.

  • shelley514

I like it all, except the denim jacked. Denim might have worked, in a darker color without the cuffs rolled up because that’s making the whole outfit too casual.

  • carnush

I think this is a great, really cute look. Love her lip color.

  • another_laura

She really is better and prettier than me! So like being in high school….

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

If her hair was down I would be fine with it. Really. I think it’s a kinda cool outfit but the hair, oy the hair.

  • http://twitter.com/Veriance995 Vera L.

She looks like the human version of Grumpy Cat. (and I loathe those boots)

  • Danielle

I don’t know why, but it always bothers me when someone wears open toed shoes and doesn’t have their toenails painted.

  • http://www.facebook.com/AdriannaGrezak Adrianna Grężak

the bottom is great. the top is frightening

  • IMNAngryLiberal

I would say and a dislike of January Jones is completely rational. She makes my back hairs stand up and my mean, catty girl come out (not that she is ever buried TOO deeply).

  • Airkisses

She could play Rachel McAdams´ bitchy older sister in a movie.

  • random_poster

Did Kiernan attend this event? I’d love to see a pic of the two of them together. I like the concept of the outfit, but I agree with those who say it’s a bit too young for her.

  • PastryGoddess

I think the top would work if it wasn’t so busy

….Actually, no that top wouldn’t work at all with anything, as you were

  • maretha2

I don’t hate the outfit and don’t hate it on her. Maybe it’s the magical powers of her face (and her make-up is an A+) but I can live with all of this, even the polyester-looking sheer blouse with visible bra … except the shoes. I hate the shoes. Horrible shoes. Shoes should not raise questions like “Are her feet trying to escape?” or “Are her toes claustrophobic?” or “What kind of footwear is that, boot, sandal or pump?” Shoes should only raise the questions: “Where I do get those and are they worth spending the rent money to have?”

  • filmcricket

I loathe the booties, but they work okay with the pants. The real problem is the fight her top & bottom are having. The top’s a little bit country, and the bottom’s way too rock ‘n’ roll. She needed to change either the blouse or the jacket (or preferably both). The hair’s cute, her make-up is perfection, and damn but she can rock a pair of leather pants.

  • Trisha26

Swap out the denim for a leather version, tuck those long sleeves up so they don’t show, swap out the shoes for a black sandal.

  • trixietru

In the dueling banjos of bitch-face my money’s on Angelina.

  • MK03

I think she was a bitchy cheerleader in high school. Or she should have been. From what I’ve read in her interviews, she definitely has the attitude down.

  • oldbobbydraper

she looked godAWFUL at this event, especially when sitting next to her cast mates and brian williams, who all made an effort and looked very nice.

  • prettybigkitty

I like everything she has on. Just not together. Set them free to be in my closet.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Her skin looks bad here. It’s like her foundation is the wrong shade or something. Compare her to Lena Dunham’s (next post) skin and you might see what I mean. And I am not a fan of shiny black leather pants ever. What about some nice tight faded jeans and some red cowboy boots with this, since it’s such a 70′s look anyway? I can hear the Dan Fogelberg playing until you get to her waist…

  • CB

love everything about this. red lipstick and leather pants can be A LOT of look, but the white blouse and denim jacket cazh it up.

  • VioletFem

Everything but the boots about this look works looks really good on her. There is no place in this world for open-toe booties.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

Wow – January Jones has absolutely no fucks to give. Extraordinarily beautiful complexion, ice cold bitch.

  • CPK1

like the leather leggings on her but everything else looks off. The proportions, the booties (shudder)

  • alyce1213

I love everything about this, except for the open toes. Not everyone can pull this off. She looks really, really cool.

  • Maluca

I’m ok with everything… EXCEPT that jean jacket. It just doesn’t go.

  • http://twitter.com/EmFairbank Emily

    An eye roll as well.

    • Glammie

Nah, she just borrowed a dress from the Mad Men wardrobe and showed January how it was done. Go Kiernan.

  • jetpackdino

Nice to see a good strong color on her lips. Feels like we’ve been seeing too many faces without lip color lately.

  • LaSylphide

I don’t actually like the look, but it’s OK on her, for some weird reason. She tends to wear off beat clothes with enough confidence that I start wondering what’s wrong with MY taste, not what’s wrong with hers.

  • http://twitter.com/lisledanielle Danielle Lisle

    Oh dear.

  • ashtangajunkie

Love the leggings and her beautiful bitchface. I do so enjoy her bitchface.

  • Lilithcat

She’s running as far and as fast as she can from her Betty Draper Francis persona!

  • demidaemon

    Occasionally?

  • Glammie

Poor January, she always wants to look edgy and rocker chick, but her blondness and delicate features make it impossible. Instead, she ends up with wannabe-bad cheerleader vibe.

  • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

wow, her face. sometimes i forget how beautiful she is.the outfit: whatevs.

  • NC_Meg

Me either. Are denim jackets making a comeback? Because I’m not on board with that.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I can’t with the see-through blouse and if you’re gonna give me a bitchface like that, then your pedicure needs to be better than mine.

    Meow.

  • Swiftlytiltingplanet

I think she’s upside down. A good dark skinny jean and a leather biker jacket would have been the way to go.

(And leather? Not a good legging. Leggings need stretch. Not parts tight and parts baggy…if that makes sense.)

  • butterflysunita

I should hate this look but she looks strangely fabulous. The bitch face sells it.

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

She looks positively hiddy, and IDC could be the tag line for her whole outfit, if it means “I Don’t Care”.

  • HK4Seven

In 10 years or so Kiernan needs a show about the “mommy dearest” style tell-all she writes about Betty Draper and her childhood. I would totally watch that.

  • guest2visits

I rarely like her choices; this is no different. Well… slightly better than most. She needs to get back on that motorcycle
and head back to beerfest or Vegas strip.
