IN or OUT: Rosario Dawson in Bottega Veneta

Posted on April 03, 2013

Rosario disappointed us terribly the last time she went out, and we’re afraid our sharp tongues got the better of us. She’s not speaking to us at the moment.* But we feel like she’s trying a little harder with this look, so we’re throwing it out to a vote.

*Technically true.

Rosario Dawson attends the premiere of ‘Trance’ in New York City in Bottega Veneta.

Bottega Veneta Pre-Fall 2013 Collection

Bottega Veneta Satin Knot Clutch

That’s a pretty fabulous dress, but it looks like a pain in the ass to wear and we think the volume up top, coupled with her boobs and a high-sitting belt all combine to thicken her. Then there’s the question of whether that dusty pink really works for her. And finally, one must consider the fact that her accessories are almost-but-not-quite matchy to the dress and exactly matched to each other. We’re thinking that’s all a little too much tone-on-tone for one look. Contrast is called for here.

But it’s got some impact to it and the dress, on its own, is chic. We’re just not sure it’s all working that well.

Vote Now!

IN! Chic and elegant, with a twist!

OUT! Why are we even discussing this? She’s a mess.

Freida Pinto has been waiting a long time to hear what the Bitter Kittens thought of her orange dress and parrot shoes. She will be happy to know they voted the look IN.

  • In, if she takes her hair off her shoulders to show the neckline better. She’s covering my favorite detail.

  • TheLaurenJean

    IN! Girl looks good.

  • TheLaurenJean

    In! Girl looks good.

  • DaveUWSNYC

The dress can’t bear that much breast. Out

    • yeah – made for a model, not a “real woman” actress. OUT

    • out for a walk

Agree with that, plus hate the bag. OUT!

  • beebee10

IN. It’s the color that’s not working too well (as you say), but she looks very good. luv her

  • MsOlympia

I think the pink looks lovely on her, and brings out the rosiness in her complexion. To my eye, where she went wrong was with the hair and eye makeup. The hair is too frilly for the dress, and the heavy upper liner with no lower definition at all is awkward.

  • fungstyle

Out. The shoes are a crime against humanity and look awful with the dress, the clutch is cute but all wrong for the look, the belt doesn’t go at all and is placed badly. And her hair is a mess – it looks like she tried to do over-night pinterest bobby pin curls. Tsk tsk, Ms. Roasario.

  • Watts

OUT. She’s too young and too pretty to be sporting that matronly a bosom.

    • OUT. That’s just it – somehow she looks matronly and she shouldn’t. She needs a hipper/edgier look.

    • Sara__B

She’s too young and pretty to be sporting that matronly a BRA! (Or maybe she just needs to wear one…)

  • IN, but the hair is sad.

  • JoDo11

I just can’t with that color. OUT!

  • zenobar

My own feet curled in pain when I noticed the model’s reddened, chapped-looking extremities. As far as this dress goes – the zipper neckline would have been better served by more severe tailoring or a less floofy fabric. It’s just a little too “small child’s askew hoodie” for my tastes.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

OUT – nothing about this look flatters her. And those lavender-ish accessories with the dusty pink….oh no.

  • She gets a pity “in” from me. I just can’t bear to give her an “out” after her last foray on this website.

  • gabbilevy

Out. Girl, that’s not your dress shape. Sorry, because it’s probably a great dress on the right gal.

  • Introspective

in with a small i because that zipper neckline/puffy sleeve/tight bodice combo seems like a lot of elements. but somehow still she appears chic.

the thing that makes this the most convincing is how much she’s obviously loving how she looks. that confidence goes a long way in selling me on some outfits im not sure about…

  • werika

She looks like she is in a good mood, which is great. The top half of the dress is awkward, mother nature’s gifts to her aren’t working with the dress. The top half looks like she is wearing her boyfriend’s rather large hoodie with misplaced zipper and really large sleeves. Out.

  • Out – due to the placement of the belt.
    Harsh, but true.

  • MilaXX

IN – The odd zipper kinda bugs, but it’s not bad enough for an out and it’s loads better than her last appearance.

  • sleepycat

OUT, it is too big on her and I am not in love with the color.

  • gorghast

Beautiful woman, but she doesn’t have much of a waist to begin with, and this dress just calls attention to that.

  • I think her posture is what makes the dress thicken her, rather than her actual build.

  • Out. Sorry Frieda. That color is not your bestie. And the skirt should have been hemmed to your knee.

    • Sobaika

Frieda Pinto is really pissed right now.

      • Hoo boy. When I screw up, I don’t mess around. Apologies to both ladies.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Out…uniboob and that dress needs more sophisticated styling.

  • Sobaika

In. I don’t have the same issues with the coloring that you do, and while it might be overly complicated for her, it doesn’t look bad.

    • Amelia

I love the color on her as well. She (to me at least) has basically the perfect skintone for that pink.

  • OUT. If it was in any other color then maybe, but this color is horribly dated and doesn’t look good on anyone!

  • RebeccaKW

Out. And it pains me. I think she should wear her hair up with this, since the hair down covers the interest at the neckline. Also, that hair she did sport saddens. The shoes were a mistake. Her lips match her belt. No, no, no.

  • Out! On principle alone. I never want any of these Plan B actresses (the go to girl/guy when their hollywood doppleganger, in this case Eva Mendes, has better things to do) to get too big for their britches. Complimenting them only goes to their head and then you end up with another Bullock or Knightley.

oh and the non functional shoulder is killing me ever so softly. When have you ever needed optional ventilation on your right shoulder?

    • JDreesen

that’s a helluva principle to be carting around. do you keep it in your britches?

      • LOL. I’m just your typical neighborhood curmudgeon. I don’t like kids on my lawn or that newfangled rock and roll on my radio.

  • flamingoNW

OUT. Do not like the color or the matchy-match. Hair is horrible

  • Qitkat

    Out for many reasons.
    1. Uniboob (unflattering)
    2. Color (blech)
    3. Length (too long)
    4. Belt (boring)
OTOH, she clearly feels attractive and flirty in this, and the zipper treatment is a new take I haven’t seen used before.

  • In, graded on a curve. Chic dress (possibly not the best for her, but so much better than her last one), great attitude, sad hair, sad accessories.

  • Roosevelt 85

Um….she’s another on the growing list of celebrities that haven’t been in anything of late and still get to be “celebrities”

    They include

    Kate Bosworth
    Diane Krugar

    • She’s standing on the red carpet at the premiere of her own movie.

And Diane Kruger currently has a movie out as well: The Host.

  • Out. The dress is just gimmicky. I love the shoes, which makes me wonder if I’m coming down with something.

  • aeb1986

I guess I’ll give it an in. But I’m not too happy about it

  • I’m terribly distracted by the wrinkles at her waistline. Out.

  • Vickiefantastico

For some reason, the sleeves really bug me and make her look a bit matronly. Perhaps it’s the volume? Maybe if they were straighter? Regardless, she does look pretty. I actually like the color on her. So it’s an IN for me.

  • She looks great. In!

  • disqus_sZRDWtvvVD

OUT. Not her dress, not her color.

  • elemspbee

OUT. It’s an interesting dress but she’s wearing it poorly. She’s made the dress look amess. she’s fired.

  • In. But the matching shoes are giving me agita.

  • mellbell

IN. It could be sleeker, particularly where the belt hits, but she still looks amazing.

  • butterflysunita

OUT. She is lovely but that’s not her dress. Though I love her pose in the last photo.

  • tereliz

IN! I like the coloring and the interest at the neckline. I think she looks chic and comfortable wearing a dress that is hard to pull off. I don’t even mind the tone-on-tone accessories. She looks great!

  • Jangle57

oh blech no; hate the color, hate the fussy neckline and it’s not doing anything for her. OUT

  • Indigo54

IN. Compared to some of the other stuff she’s worn recently, this is a gigantic leap forward.

  • VioletFem

In. I actually think the color looks good on her, but I agree that the accessorizing is rather boring. A gold clutch and pair of shoes would have been much more interesting.

  • bxbourgie

In. It’s just… pretty. It’s a pretty take on a regular shaped dress. Not sure about the color on her, but it’s just a straight up pretty look. In.

  • Out. Too blah looking on her skintone and the fit isn’t good. Back to the drawing board, Rosario.

  • VictoriaDiNardo

This is the sixth or seventh actress featured in just the last two days who has her hair pulled all over one shoulder ( does this qualify as ‘mermaid hair”? ). In this case I can understand to a degree, because of the neckline detail, but I’m curious.

Is this a common hair style among women with long hair in general or just in these photo-ops? I haven’t had long hair since the Nixon administration and in those days it was just supposed to hang down your back. So what gives with this – any thoughts?

    • carolie_king

I think it’s more a photo-op trend, so we can see the mane in all its glory, which we would miss if it was trailing down the back. Except no glory here, because it’s a bit flat and uninspired.

      • VictoriaDiNardo

Yes, I think it generally looks uninspired and a bit junior-high-hair-flippy. Boooor-ring.

  • I think the neckline is interesting and playful, and the dress is a winner. I have issues with the belt and the accessories, but this is IN.

  • out. looks like she got her armpit caught in her zipper. ouch.

  • hughman

No. She looks like she’s struggling out of a zippered sleeping bag.

  • carolie_king

OUT. Color is NOT working, and the hair! Looks like mine after 2 days with layered product and no shower (not that I’ve ever done that).

    • Vlasta Bubinka

It looks like she’s going to a costume party as a bottle of Pepto. Out.

  • I vote this as an out. I blame the sleeves, the dress is a great color and shape, but those sleeves kill me. Also: The shoes are awful.

  • Tatiana Luján

Small in, because I find the dress pretty and interesting, but the accesories are kind of fighting each other (that’s hard with neutrals), and I think she would look better without the belt. The sleeves and the neckline are eyecatching enough.

  • I’m not sure the dusty pink works, but I feel like making the entire color scheme of a look dusty pink makes me feel like I have pinkeye, and REALLY doesn’t work. I’m also not sure why she unzipped the dress all the way to her armpit, unless it’s a sizing/proportion issue, in which case just pick another dress, hon. OUT.

  • crash1212

OUT. Girl, that is not your dress.

  • carolynmo

I can’t make up my mind, but if I’m that ambivalent, it must be an out.

  • kelsita421

out. girl, that is not your complicated-upper-half of a dress.

  • conniemd

Out. With all the wrinkles and bulges in the dress she looks frumpy.

  • oldbobbydraper

    it’s so 1993 yuppie…………. out

  • Had she gone for more contrast in the shoe it would have been perfect, but I still say this is an IN.

  • deathandthestrawberry

She is one of my faves, but I don’t love this look. She has too much of a figure for the cut of the dress, and the color reminds me of a pink eraser. She looks tired too. OUT.

  • LauraWL

In. LOVE the dress, just wish she hadn’t unzipped it quite so much.

  • ellabob

    NO NO NO

  • random_poster

Out. The proportions above the belt throws off the line up top that gave it the sleekness. Unfortunately, the model wore it better.

  • PeaceBang

OUT. She’s beautiful and the dress is beautiful, but they’re not beautiful together.

  • It’s an “IN,” but I have quibbles. I wish she would have worn her hair back, because it conflicts with the unusual neckline of the dress. I really like the dress – including the color, but I agree that the whole look would stand out more if she’d worn bolder/more contrasting accessories.

Good to see that she’s trying to have a little fun with the “step-and-repeat.”

  • MarissaLG

This is an absolute IN for me. It’s a beautiful color for her, it fits her nicely, and it has a really interesting shape while still being very conservative. I think I prefer the metallic belt that the model is wearing, because it adds some shine and would look better with Rosie’s accessories, but that’s such a tiny criticism. Definitely IN.

  • Out, not a good color or shape for her.

  • SewingSiren

It’s too small. If it fit her she would look fabulous.

  • korilian

I love ton sur ton. It’s a vice.

  • H2olovngrl

Like the dress, hate the shoes. In-ish.

  • formerlyAnon

Out. Hair is not chic enough, but mostly it’s based on fit of top and most especially that belt and how it draws the eye to the fact that the top is rumply and not-sleek south of the breasts. Which is an issue since this was *almost* an “in” based on its sleek chic. (Plus, I confess to liking tone-on-tone.)

  • ringthing

No. And that color reminds me of hospital bedpans.

  • elephantasmagoric

Out. She’s a young, insanely pretty woman. You can’t tell in that dress- the neckline ages her and the fabric is too heavy.

  • jmorino08

    Out! Two words: UNI BOOB.

  • l_c_ann

  • I’m not digging that pink at all. Nor the fit in the bust. OUT.

  • Out.

  • Sara h

Out. I believe the outfit would have looked a LOT better without the belt. And I wish she did something else with her hair.

  • Alyssa

OUT. Once the Fug girls called it Mother-of-the-Bride, it’s all I see. She should be better than this.

  • Awful dress. OUT.

  • Uh, no. Wrong color, wrong undergarments, wrong age range (of the dress) and general look of overall discomfort. It always puzzles me: you’re a young star or starlet. You have an infinite variety of schmattes available. You pick stuff that a) looks cheap b) makes you look terrible even though you have a smokin’ figure c) boring, stupid shoes.Their minions need to take pictures before they step out the door! Isn’t it the stylist’s job to check every little detail? Why do they make all that money (stylists) if this is the net result? She’s a gorgeous young creature, wrapped in ick.

  • Janet B

    No question, OUT.

  • meh out, she favors such strange modernist shapes

but her make up has NEVER looked better

  • Decogirl

OUT. Makes her look too top-heavy, and the jarring belt accentuates that aspect. I like suggestion of dress without belt. Maybe accessories in pewter or black patent leather. Also hike the hem up about two inches. Seems like it hits at an awkward or unflattering angle.

  • Trisha26

OUT for the reasons mentioned. The model’s accessories are all just as matchy but the dress looks much better on her “no boob” body. Still a difficult dress.

  • PrunellaV

The only good thing about that dress is that she can zip it down and air out her left armpit if necessary. OUT because she can’t air out the right one as well.

  • Sara__B

OUT. Love her smile, and that’s all.

  • Miss_Magpie

In, solely because I want that dress in 3 colors, the blush, black (but with a fitted sleeve) and a green – forest, emerald, bottle….I’m not choosy.

  • Monabel

    I like it.

  • Imasewsure

OUT. hate the color, hate the sleeves but don’t hate the neckline as much on her as I do on the model. Just barely an out but still out for me

  • Beth513

I like the dress a lot on her, the color, the fit, the whole thing. I do not like the accessories and I think her hair needs some more umph. It’s an IN, even with the questionable styling. I think the dress is great.

  • nannypoo

She’s not speaking to me either, and now she’ll really be steamed because I am publicly stating that this dress looks awful on her. Take that, Rosario.

  • susan6

“Then there’s the question of whether that dusty pink really works for her.”
    It does not. Out.

  • Kristy Evans

Sigh. I love Rosario so hard (she is number one on my “freebie” list) but this color does nothing for her, and I wish the zipper wasn’t unzipped so far. I do love her sassy posing, but OUT.

  • Kathleen B

  • sariebee

I want this to be an IN. Can we give her a second go at it, double or nothing?

  • Verascity

Ooh, no. This is absolutely not her look in any way, shape, or form. OUT.

  • MintaHallWriter

absolutely does not fit her well. The bodice cut does her very full bosom no favors at all. And the hips seems too tight or just not cut to fit her figure. Don’t like the color on her–a beautiful turquoise might have been stunning–but the cut of the dress is just wrong.

  • prettybigkitty

Out. Too matchy, matchy. And not fitted properly.

  • ralish

Out. Not her color, or her shape. Accessories don’t help it at all.

  • Aly Light

    I like it. IN.

  • decormaven

Sadly, out. She’s a beautiful gal, but this dress style is not suited to her figure. Match-y shoes are giving me eye twitch.

  • Melizmatic

    Neither, frankly.

IMO, it’s rather “meh”, but it’s still MILES better than that last atrocity she was caught wearing, which you aptly titled “Rosario Gives Up”.

At least some effort was put into this look…

  • Zippypie

OUT. This is not her dress. It looks like cheap double knit polyester on her.

  • marilyn

Barely out. Everythng is just off a little bit. The dress is not quite the right color, the cut is not quite flattering, it is a little to busy for her, the zipper is interesting, but not particularly flattering, as is the belt. I do find the shoe color an interesting choice, and am not really opposed to it. It is interesting. This looks like something an older woman would wear to a wedding, to Easter dinner, or to a graduation brunch.

I find it interesting that it is barely spring and these people are wearing clothes from next fall’s collection. Odd, but probably comfortable. Usually, they are wearing clothes that are totally from the wrong season (ie., sundresses in December, coats in summer, etc.). This dress is from far enough away in the future to be comfortable.

  • alyce1213

OUT. This is totally unflattering, emphasis on UN.

  • demidaemon

OUT. The entire matchiness of the color palette makes it look like Barbie exploded all over her. The design is cute, but I’m not sure it is right for her, both in color and the way the bodice fits her.

  • I like it, and dusty pink is my favorite color. Yeah, I said it. IN.

  • OUT. She looks really short and the colour doesn’t suit her at all.

  • unbornfawn

She may be trying but she is failing. The fit is poor. Her top half looks thick, and the color is only so-so. OUT.

  • CatherineRhodes

  • OUT!!!

  • Out due to bodice fit, dopey sleeve, creepy zipper, 80s color.

  • Airkisses

Hate the neckline, hate the color on her. hate the shoes. OUT.

  • That is very unflattering on her. OUT!

  • Guest

IN. The dress is fabulous, and while I personally don’t like the colour, I think it’s very pretty on her. In a perfect world, the shoes and purse would be a different colour, but I think the dress makes up for it.

  • Rachel

IN. The dress is fabulous, and while I personally don’t like the colour, I think it’s very pretty on her. In a perfect world, the shoes and purse would be a different colour, but I think the dress makes up for it.

  • I read Fuggirls first, and I can’t get the mother of the bride assessment they gave it out of my head. OUT

  • Carrieanno

Out. Which is what I’d give it anyway but am henceforth giving anything billed as “Fall,” Pre-fall,” or “Fall/Winter” until September.

  • lrhoff

    Nope, doesn’t work.

  • OUT. You boys like that dress? For real? With the shapeless sleeves and the drab color? I don’t even know who you are any more.

  • Brienne Calmer

Uniboob the color of shoe store footies? OUT.

  • Out. Mostly due to the bad eyeliner and wonky lashes.

  • ankali

OUT. Love the dress, but it’s not flattering her figure. Also, hair and makeup look sloppy. I fail to understand how such a superlatively gorgeous woman can so consistently sabotage her own genes with messy, drab looks.

  • MoreShoes

    In. I want this dress.

  • Jennifer Coleman

The dress is for someone with a flat chest and long neck. And some bobby pins to put up that hair.

  • dashwoodstole

    Out. Horrible colour.

  • Judy_S

I am coming back to this next day, not having voted. I give her an IN after *deep* consideration. She is wearing a very expensive designer dress made for someone with a different figure, and she does not look like the model or an advertorial. But she does look beautiful, and she looks as if she is being herself. The dress is simple enough that I think she can get away with that.

  • PeggyOC

Out. The fabric looks cheap, the color doesn’t work for her, and I believe GoFug said it best when they said Mother of the Bride. On Helen Mirren, this dress would be racy and irreverent. On Rosario it’s just aging. She needs to ditch that hem length!

  • Adriana Garcia

    OUT. Maybe one size up?

  • padma sallah

Is she not happy with her arms. Cause as far as I seem to remember, every dress so far seems to have had some variation of poufy/fluffy sleeves. I for one, do like the dusky pink. It does suit her. The shoes are still too on-point though. But, I like it overall because the colour is selling it for me and I find the dress very pretty. IN.

  • warnerave

    dress looks sloppy

  • chitowndg

In – she looks real and really beautiful.

  • Joyce VG

I say IN. I think the dress makes her curves look great.

  • Snailstsichr

    OUT. This ages her terribly.

  • JauntyJohn

Swing-and-a-miss I’m afraid. Close but… Out. Makes her look slouchy — and that last pose, in that dress, is pure Lucy Rcardo “I’m gonna vamp you.” Might work better if not so long?

  • EEKstl

OUT. To paraphrase Addison DeWitt’s: “You’re too short for that gesture,” I give you: “You’re too busty for that dress.” And no one is anything enough for that neckline.

  • In! It’s a softer look for her, which she can’t always achieve. Pretty.

  • OUT. Not her dress. Looks nice on the model, though.

  • allisankelly

Eye shadow matches the dress, dress matches the shoes. OUT.

  • out

  • Louise Bryan

OUT. The first thing that came to mind on viewing the dress was “Pepto-Bismol pink.”

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

OUT! And the shoes and clutch aren’t helping.

  • ccm800
