IN or OUT: Charlize Theron in Jason Wu

Posted on April 22, 2013

Geez Louise, Charlize. We never thought we’d have to tell you of all people to take your hands out of your pockets. We know you’ve got the butch hair now and all, but we tend to reserve that one for the guys.

Charlize Theron attends the 2013 GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles, California in a Jason Wu jumpsuit accessorized with Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry.

Jason Wu Pre-Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Kate Bogucharskaia

What do we think of this? We’re asking. At first glance, it seems so right. It’s Charlize in a fabulously ’70s kinda jumpsuit. What’s to complain about?

But the more we look at it, the less it appeals. We’ll give her credit for at least ensuring that we can see her feet and not subjecting us to the elephant feel so many ladystars serve up when they wear pants. And the chain sash is disco-fun, if a little oversized. But we really don’t love the hair at all. And the jewelry might have been a step too far, which is a surprising criticism to make against her. She’s not normally the over-accessorized type. But really , our main quibble is that this thing isn’t shaped all that great. It just doesn’t have the oomph, y’know?

Vote Now!

IN! Kinda free, kinda wow, Charlize!

OUT! You can slap as many gold chains on it as you want. It’s still pajamas.

Pretty much no one liked Michelle Williams’ oddly shaped gown, voting it a big ol’ O to the UT.

Maybe it’s just me, but I thought it was pretty funny that the original model had her hand in her pocket.

  • OUT. I kind of like the hair, but I hate the color of that lipstick. And I wish she’d stuck with the belt that the model has on. Even then, I’m still not sure I’d like it…

  • Sarah

Not doing much for her figure. She has not a hip in sight…

  • Sara__B

OUT. She’s extraordinarily gorgeous, but even she can’t save a jumpsuit badly accessorized. (The belt is especially awful.)

  • Ugonna Wosu

disagree. The more I see it, the more I love it. Casual chic at its best, which is the point of the hands in the pockets. They’re slacks and she’s doing an elegant yet casual pose. Masculine vs. Feminine, like a modern day Lauren Bacall, Lauren Hutton or Katherine Hepburn.

  • Nope. Don’t like the chain belt matched with the chain bracelet and it isn’t flattering.

  • IN. Those shoulders! It’s relaxed yet sexy.

  • teensmom99

OUT, the top is wrong. And a funny side point re hands in your pockets–sometimes when you wear something with comfortable pants, it feels like pjs and you just forget that it’s really expensive & you shouldn’t have your hands in the pockets.

  • gabbilevy

For some reason, the proportions are working on the model by not poor Charlize.

  • She has the perfect shoulders and neck to carry this look. I could have lived without the jewelry on her wrists. Otherwise, she looks great. Love her short hair.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

I must agree – it actually takes some effort to get Charlize to an “out” and the hair and belt are daring us to do it.

  • Kenisha Hill Phillips

  • It needs a cinching belt. But she’s so frigging gorgeous, she could wear sackcloth and be fierce.

  • BrooklynBomber

IN I suspect she looks good in person, though I prefer the black belt shown on the model. And the lipstick color makes me want to cry. But, still.

  • DinaSews

OUT. The shape is more like pajamas than a chic jumpsuit.

  • JimMcC

It pains me, but…out. It should be amazing, but that belt just looks hella clunky, and her hair is decidedly uncute. It’s in a weird in between stage, I think. Oh, world’s most beautiful living woman…this just wasn’t your best.

  • Catiline

    IN! I honestly love this.

  • Janet B

    Chic and easy.

  • Out. Its just not doing anything for her at all. The harsh lighting that is removing all her facial contours isn’t helping either, and the barbie Pink lips? Um,…nope.

  • unbornfawn

My biggest criticism is the hands in the pockets. The rest is OK, nothing great, nothing bad. Kinda bland and safe. IN.

  • aeb1986

what does her tattoo say? I’ll give this a tepid In

  • decormaven

In for the outfit; out for the accessories. If the belt and and bracelet had been more in the same metallic tone, I would like them better. And the hair should be a bit softer; that’s a lot of product holding those curls in place.

  • kipper

I think its working, bringing some Nan Kempner realness to a jumpsuit…

  • 3boysful

It’s okay; your criticisms are valid. But the reference to a 1970s perfume ad made me grin!

  • MilaXX

Small out. the devil is in the details. The hair is over styled and there is too much jewelry. I like the simpler belt the model is wearing

  • MissAnnieRN

OUT because of the hair. It’s too…90’s? It reeks of curling iron. I hate to give her an out because of her hair, but if she had taken her hands out of her pockets and kept her closely cropped locks more…closely cropped to her head, I think the proportions of this would have worked for me.

    • Vickiefantastico

You’ve head the nail on the “head”. Get it? Get it? Ahem…anyways, I agree. The hair is too high here, which makes the rest of the outfit look wrong.

  • alyce1213

In. It’s not to drop dead for, but nothing’s wrong here.

  • Maybe just because she’s super hot, but I think she’s working the hell out of it. It’d be pajamas on a lesser woman, but on Miss Charlize, it’s in in IN.

  • IN, almost WERQ!

  • bailey debruynkops

as flawless a mug she carries around, the jumpsuit + jewelry is trying too hard. OUT

  • Pennymac

Slightly In. But that hair is Gawdawful.

  • Carol

I hate everything about this look, but she still looks incredible. IN.

  • l_c_ann

Well, it must have been great, because ole’ President Bill certainly was acting frisky around her, taking her hat and all.

  • Little_Olive

That belt is very ugly and does nothing to provide structure to a such a loose piece of clothing.

Should have kept the original belt (or something in that wheelhouse) and gone for gold in the earrings.

The lip color is also very ugly.

  • in but not an IN. Definitely not bad enough to be an out. So maybe a meh? It looks a skoosh too big.

  • Nikko Viquiera

    In. Overall this looks gorgeous!

  • The cut of the jumpsuit does NOTHING. It shows her underarm side fat. What feature of this jumpsuit deems it a new design? The gold belt is so wrong. The runway model with the black belt looks so much better. I like Charlize’s hair. Few faces can pull that off.

  • Tatiana Luján

I don’t know what is it with the color, maybe it’s the shade of blonde or maybe it’s the listick, but something doesn’t seem quite right.
The bracelet is too similar to the waist-chain, so I think it’s redundant.
Even with the quibbles, she’s IN.

  • Bexxx

    IN for shoulders. Damn girl.

  • Julie Fountain

I love it, I think she looks great. The hair will be better in a week or two, it’s a tad too short, I think. But overall this is an IN.

  • conniemd

In. It’s Charlize and she looks great. If at greater glance there are quibbles…

  • PastryGoddess

She is serving up disco glamour realness

  • Jangle57

Looks fabulous on the model; not so fabulous on Cherlize: she has no figure in this! Not sure how she manages to mange that but regardless, OUT

  • IN. She can’t look bad!

  • padma sallah

OUT. Pajamas are still pajamas. I’m actually fine with the over-accesorizing. The pajamas though…

  • flamingoNW

IN. You don’t have the picture of her in Bill Clinton’s fedora!

I like her hair, but not the overall jumpsuit. Meeeh out.

  • Imasewsure

Don’t like the hair and makeup but I have to give it a muted IN since it’s not so bad. Not perfect or interesting, but not awful either

  • padma sallah

Which is kind of ridiculous cause Charlize too has model-like proportions and therefore the jumpsuit should work but it doesn’t.

  • OMG – a jumpsuit I like! I think she looks great – from hair to makeup to accessories and the rest. IN!

  • lamamu

In! Normally, Jason Wu is too fussy for me, but this is simple and chic and perfect for Charlize. (Okay, I must confess that my entire view of Jason Wu is based on that fussy Target collection he did a year or two ago and that I don’t know anything about any of his other collections. Other than what Michelle Obama wears on occasion. Also, I hope Charlize isn’t really dating Seth McFarlane.)

  • MoHub

Maybe that’s why she’s pouffing out the pockets: to create hips.

    • Sarah

Would that one could somehow UN-create hips so easily.

  • GorgeousThings

OUT. It takes a helluva designer to make Charlize Theron look stumpy, but Jason Wu has managed it.

    And that hair is tragic.

  • For getting that damn Charlie jingle stuck in my head, I give her a lower case out.

  • In, but only on her. She is no mere mortal.

  • copper

In. I really like how butch this is — it’s all fierce, and intimidating and ‘i don’t care what YOU think” fabulousness. I think a better fit would go against the point she’s making. The focus right now is on her shoulders and if it shifted to more traditionally feminine areas like the waist or the legs she’d just be another starlet dressed in a jumpsuit instead of this androgynous figure. Definitely not a boring look.

  • IN. The more I scroll, the more I like it.

  • Out. It’s stumpifying her. And the bodice looks like one good breeze and she’d be showing off her jubblies.

  • SewingSiren

What on Earth is going on with the model picture? Her legs could not possibly be that long.

  • mhleta

I see absolutely nothing to complain about here. There are others in desperate need of your critique. CL is not one of them. Next.

  • She looks as good as anyone in a jumpsuit can look.

  • IN. Are you guys crazy. She’s gorgeous. Am I blinded by perfect skin and amazing shoulders? Maybe. Am I biased? Maybe. Is she still fabulous? Yes! IN. A thousand times IN.

  • In, I love her hair, and am willing to forgive the pockets full of hands…you know, just this once. Pass for the day.

  • jw_ny

She looks as if she has no hips and with her wide shoulders, no waist, and what appears to be a slight bulge, it’s man-ish.

    Her hair is awful.

  • Susan Yoon

IN. She might be the only one, with her Amazonian features and that face, who can pull this off. This outfit on a mere mortal would be an out though.

  • Beardslee

Out. Dreary and shapeless and dumb looking.

  • mrspotts66

totally IN. flattering her shoulders, nips in at her waist. IN
    love her make-up, too.

  • RandiLu

    Love. In

  • carnush

I hate the chain, it drags the whole outfit down. Should have been a sleek belt. And the hair is really bad. OUT.

  • calimon

That’s kind of what annoys me about those pockets, especially in dresses. You wouldn’t known they were there, or were pockets, until the model/celeb is instructed to demonstrate it as such. I think it would look more like PJs if CT didn’t have her hands in the pockets.

    • Exactly! Personally, I like pockets in dresses, but it’s mainly to put my phone or cards in when I go out on the town so I don’t have to worry about leaving my bag somewhere.

  • OUT which is sad because CT is so fab. But that jumpsuit isn’t flattering, I don’t like the lipstick and the hair is horribly Bieberesque.

  • buscateunomasalto

    In. Casual chic disco-fabulousness.

  • StellaZafella

With the hair and her RED lips and the shape of the catsuit, I get an updated Grable feeling.
I wouldn’t mind the hands in pockets if the thumbs were showing…like a pose, not a demure slouch.

  • KQ67

Sharon Stone circa 1986. Yeah, I said it.

  • formerlyAnon

In. Not the best example of the look I bet she could pull off, but in motion I bet she looked great. And, really, in my (brief) disco jumpsuit days, I only looked this good in my imagination.

  • Introspective

In: irrational love plus the easy look of this (as easy as a jumpsuit can look that is) makes this acceptable to me. Not her best but also not her worst and by far not as bad as some of the fug regularly seen in some of these posts…

    Keep being fab Charlize

  • homofascist

In. I think she looks amazing. The belt isn’t my favorite, but that isn’t enough to ruin the whole look. I actually love the hair too…

  • poggi

I think you are right. The top seems less baggy on the model and belt insures that the bodice ha a more fitted feel. But on Charlize the bodice seems dragged down by the belt. It’s an out.

  • Carly Warnock

in. i love it. love the hair.

  • amaranth16

IN. Bringing the young Sharon Stone badassery. Get it, girl.

  • pulpytomato

In. She looks chic and a little punk at the same time.

  • LaSylphide

In. She provides her own oomph, and I don’t think the outfit is de-oomphing her at all. Love the hair, and OMG, lipstick with color!!!

  • In, for her only. And get your hands out of your pockets. That’s an everyone rule, not just a boys rule.

  • IN. Definitley kinda’ Char-lie!

  • Synnamin

In. I hate jumpers, but she looks classic and comfortable

  • Sorry, I love everything. I think she looks amazing. IN for me.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

Out, out, out. I would never have guessed that a solid color jumpsuit could make the divine Ms. Th look short and stumpy, but here we are. Look at the model … legs that appear to go on for miles. Then look at Charlize (who HAS legs that go on for miles) — short, stumpy legs.

    • procrastinatrice

yes, but I think the model looks extremely oddly proportioned, with a torso that is too short in comparison to her legs. Or to her pants rather, as the reason her legs look much longer than CT’s is because the pants go on for miles and we can’t see the feet.

  • ringthing

    IN. Love the jewelry.

  • Call me Bee

Hee hee–kinda free, kinda wow! IN!

  • procrastinatrice

IN! I love the make up, the fabulous jumpsuit with the badass chain belt, and even the 90s hair. As Ted Mosby would say about his red cowboy boots: PULLING. THEM. OFF.

  • Indovina

I’m disappointed that the GLAAD Media Awards are apparently sponsored by KetelOne and Wells Fargo and I’m disappointed that Charlize Theron showed up looking kind of butch and probably didn’t even go home with a woman.

But I actually like the outfit, or rather I like the jumpsuit – the accessories not so much. Contrasting golds and all. I love short hair, but that particular style seems dated to me.

  • In. She can do no wrong

  • the hair has officially entered its awkward growing out phase. My condolences Ms. Theron. Even you shall suffer.

  • RebeccaKW

In. I love it. The fit could be better, but it’s not bad and I love her hair and makeup. I’m really digging this.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

IN…she looks sexy and comfy at the same time.

  • Out. A ridiculous jumpsuit with bad hair and very bad makeup. I love her, but sometimes it’s like she takes it as a challenge to make that perfect face look bad.

  • Out! The belt is not enough to give her a waist in this.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

In. I think it’s fierce and I like the Shelly Winters hair.

  • I cannot say no to the Theron. IN.

  • I hate jumpsuits, but come on, it’s Charlize!!! She’d look good in a trash bag,

  • barbarienne

IN. The outfit is fine–neither rocking nor offending–but I LOVE the hair.

  • nannypoo

It’s definitely oomphless but I like it anyway. She must have the world’s slowest growing hair. I like the idea of this style but not the execution.

  • stubbornthoughts

I don’t love the belt, but she rocks my socks. IN.

  • finnishmaria

    I just… hate that belt.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

IN. i want her to be my Leather Sir.

  • TheAmericaness

    Euthrymics chic?

  • Joyce VG

    IN. It’s Charlize so….

  • lalahartma

  • marilyn

    In. It is chic.

  • Drab, bored, and retro in a bad way. OUT.

  • Trisha26

OUT. Nothing to it. The drawstring neckline is especially unflattering. As much as I detest astonishing displays of cleavage or side cut-outs or exposed backs, any of those would be preferable to this unflattering bodice.

  • trisker

OUT. looks like a stylish beach dress that morphed into a jumpsuit, not appropriate for red carpet.

  • Verascity

    IN. She looks fantastic.

  • pugluv

IN!!!! Can this woman ever NOT look like a million bucks? She is my ultimate girl crush (she and Marion Cotillard), I think she is drop dead gorgeous and sexy as hell!!!!

  • Louise Bryan

I give this an IN. It’s a simple backdrop to the gold, and I *love* the hair.

  • MandyM

She looks fly! I vote IN!

  • Anniebet

Out. PJs. And why the hell isn’t she letting her hair grow out on the sides?

  • Hhhope

    IN. I’m diggin’ it.

  • Jessica Goldstein

I don’t like the fit at the bust. But this is Charlize: I don’t think she CAN look bad. Just too much gorgeousness there. For me, neither in nor out.

  • sado

    Always always one comes close

  • CarolinLA

In. Love the curls matching the belt.

  • IN. She’s working it in a way that I don’t think many other starlets could.

  • phrenk

    Certainly not perfect, but IN.

  • Haley Buchanan

I love a gal who can pull off a catsuit. IN. The hair and the fab belt are totally working, and I’m pretty sure I’d have my hands in my fabulous pockets too!

  • butterflysunita

IN. I think she looks great. Actually kind of love it on her.

  • MaryAtRealityTea

    IN. going with my gut.

  • PeaceBang

Hate the hair but love the rest. And thanks for the “Charlie” reference. Made me LOL. IN!

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

IN! Lovely, easy, chic. And I love the jewelry. The bracelets are fab!

  • MartyBellerMask

I don’t love it but it’s certainly not “out”.

I’m going to have to say lower-case “in”. 🙂

  • lizlemonglasses

“I pity the fool!” -all I can see

  • bd73

uncharacteristically unflattering, head to toe. maybe she didn’t have time to plan it out what with the baby and all. the hair isn’t doing what it was intended to do and the jumpsuit doesn’t fit right. how does that even happen on a mannequin like her? …had to happen sometime.

  • demidaemon

    IN. She looks smokin.

  • OUT

  • Contralto

    OUT. The hair is bizarre.

  • M. H. Leader

Definitely an IN. I think she looks great here. I kinda dig the hair, I love the combination of bracelet & waist chain. I think she looks wonderful!

  • The hair was for a role and she’s rocking it. The hands in the pockets make the midsection look weird, but I think if she was standing differently it would be perfect. IN.

  • ballerinawithagun

Out! When she walked to the podium she had to adjust the top so that she wouldn’t have an accident. I like the idea but it needs more structure.

  • anotherintro

In! Totally love it on her.

  • Qitkat

In. Charlize could wear a paper bag and still be in.

  • goddess. love.

  • OUT. I would wear that belt, though . . . in 13th-century costume.

  • In – love it.

  • CatherineRhodes

  • kathrineb

IN. Charlize totally pulls this off! Loving the hair and that pink lip colour too!

  • Elleachaudaucul

How can this be up for debate?! IN!

  • mhlmh
