Hailee Steinfeld in Valentino at CinemaCon

Posted on April 19, 2013

Oh, Hailee Steinfeld. Why must you taunt your imaginary gay uncles so? Why must you pull us in different directions?

Because this?

Hailee Steinfeld attends the 2013 CinemaCon Awards ceremony in Las Vegas, Nevada in a Valentino jumpsuit paired with a jimmy Choo clutch and Brian Atwood shoes.

Is pretty damn chic and fabulous. On the other hand, it’s also a sheer lace catsuit on a 16-year-old. We are very cross with you right now, Hailee; mostly for making us sound like grumpy old prudes. Your punishment is our derision regarding your too-matchy accessories.

We’ll grant that it’s really not all that sexualized and only gives the slightest illusion of actually being sheer. She’s technically “covered up,” it’s true. But we can’t change our initial impression, which was “YOU GO BACK TO YOUR ROOM, YOUNG LADY, AND YOU JUST THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU’VE DONE.”

And that’s not even getting into the utter weirdness that we actually like a sheer lace catsuit. Where did THAT come from? Oh, this is all just too confusing and upsetting for us. We need a cup of tea and an hour or two to watch our stories.

Hmm… scroll-down redemption on this. I love everything from the collarbone down, but her hair and makeup are making me sad and I’m not sold on the shoulder puffs.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

T MARIA LO, “chic and fabulous” “sheer lace catsuit”.

  • Sarah

Looks good – agree with the age maybe-not-appropriateness, but can we talk about bad hair? Sorry, frizzy mini bouffant is killing the look for me.

  • SewingSiren

Sorry to say, I fall in the grumpy old prude camp.

  • I want to see this on a grown up.
Ms. Thing needs to send it off to ________, immediately. Fill in the blank Kittens?

    • Our immediate thought when we saw it was: This needs to go to Cameron Diaz.

    • SewingSiren

    • I was thinking Charlize?

    • I’m thinking Zoe Saldana could rock the shit out of it and would have better accessories to boot.

      • Daisy Walker

    • eowyn_of_rohan

Rooney Mara with Lisbeth Salander hair.

    • BazoDee

      I thought not pregnant Halle.

      • You know she’d have to hack off a sleeve and shouler though. Just the one, of course

  • PastryGoddess

I’m rather upset at the fact that I can see a 16 year old’s bra through a sheer top. I’m also concerned that I am not yet 30 and want to use words like whippersnapper and say “kids these days”

    • charlotte

“We saw your bra” should be considered for next year’s Oscars.

    • I just think back to my 60-year-old aunt’s photos of hot pants and crochet lace prom dress, and realize that skanky teen clothing has a long and storied history.

      • drdarke

That’s right, @SkipperJane – remind me I’m only a few years younger than your aunt! Just for that, I should post pictures of myself in a shrimp-colored leisure suit, Quiana black shirt with roses on it, platforms and a Jafro….

…if my wife didn’t burn them along with the leisure suit once we started living together.

  • amaranth16

I would cut someone for this if it were just the pants.

  • save_the_hobbit

No 16 year old should be wearing this, I’m sorry. This is coming from a 23 year old.

    • Carly Warnock

Agreed and I’m 24. I still get self-conscious wearing a semi-sheer black blouse with a black bra out to a bar that I’m being ‘too-riske’ at my age. Not body conscious but just worried it’s too racy for someone so young and I have 8 years on her.

  • slightest impression? Real or not, I have the distinct impression of a belly button and two boobs.

    • RebeccaKW

Same here. First thing I did was double-check to make sure there was a bra under there. I really like this on her (which is crazy, I should hate it), but I have a problem with the sheerness on a girl so young. If it makes you have to look twice to make sure that is a bra and not bare skin boobies, it’s not right for a 16 y.o. Maybe she didn’t realize it was so sheer at home, but under the flash bulbs it is? Not an excuse, of course, but I would feel better about it if that was the problem.

      • SRQkitten

But don’t you think there are stylists involved who probably should have a bit more thought for what a 16 y.o. Is wearing? I won’t say parents because the last time I did it turned out to be someone who was old enough to not have parents involved and I know no 16 y.o. really wants parental advice on how to dress.

        • RebeccaKW

I don’t know if she uses one or not, but it happens to adult stars who use stylists, too. They think it’s fine, but then they one stage with the bright lights in the back, and now the skirt they thought was fine is now sheer.

And actually, I’d really rather see a 16 year old in this, than in the crap I see regular kids in. Tiny shorts so short, the leg hem hits at the thigh/hip juncture. Cheeks hanging out the back. It’s like a denim bikini bottom. Not old enough to drive, but the world knows your waxing situation. Wrong.

  • MilaXX

I love it that you said “watch our stories”. That’s what my grandmom used to call watching her soaps.
Like Halle’s look, but I’d wish either the shoe or the bag was metallic, not both.

    • smallgirlsaretrouble

My boyfriend and I call it watching our programs, but said like Mitchell on Modern Family listening to the neighbours through the baby monitor – progrums

  • schadenfreudelicious

“you march right back upstairs and change your clothes young lady!

  • It reminded me of the jumpsuit Kristen Stewart wore last year, but way classier.
But it’s not for a 16 year old girl.

  • Diego!

I think she looks amazing, tough her underwear should have been black or blue in this case 😛

  • This is hideous and the closeups make me feel itchy.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Cute outfit, but yes to either gold shoes or purse and not both. I’m the mother of teenage sons, and I actually miss the idea of making a girl march upstairs and change. But I’d rather she was in that than a bandage skirt and cleavage top!

  • teensmom99

I kind of think that the only time to wear this is when you are a teen. But the nice folks at Urban Outfitters make stuff like this with lining the color of lace and that’s what you should wear young lady. But right now, I’m so relieved that your thighs and decolletage are “covered,” that I will just sigh and give up and take you to the mall AGAIN.

    • formerlyAnon

One “like” is not enough for how I feel about this comment.

  • Tatiana Luján

  • It looks itchy

  • Tatiana Luján

I wish she either a) tweezed her eyebrows a bit or b) didn’t wear such a heavy eye makeup. Bushy eyebrows and heavy makeup just don’t go together.
The hair is a mess and the jumpsuit is not age appropriate, but I like it.

    • Unvacuous

This exactly. Coupled with the frizzy texture of her hair the whole effect is messy. I’m usually a fan of a more natural brow but hers need to be refined to better suit her features.

    • lrober03

From far away I can’t tell where the makeup ends and the eyebrows begin. Unfortunate, because she can do a strong brow.

    • AmeliaEve

Dear Hailee, if you are old enough to wear this outfit you are old enough to get your brows waxed.

  • LauraWL

It it weird that I like this and would wear it if I could actually afford it? I am in my early thirties tho…

  • anotherkate

I just wish it were lined the whole way. She’s working the hell out of it though. I’m always in awe of teenagers who can carry clothing, since I am just beginning to come into my own on that front in my late 20s. She has a high style IQ.

  • No. No, no, no. Not on anyone, but especially not on a 16 year old. And never with schoolgirl hair. And god KNOWS not with shiny gold shoes and bag. But since it’s no, nae, never, the rest of that doesn’t matter.

  • marilyn

The outfit is too old for her. What’s with her hair? It is in a little girl ‘do, Even at that, is her hair all broken, or frizzy, or something? Did she get a really bad perm, or have a bad experience with a curling iron? If you look at her hair closely, it looks like it is in really bad shape. She needs a shorter cut so that mess can grow out.

  • nannypoo

I am not at all bothered by the lace on a girl her age. We’re talking about its see-throughness because we’re zeroed in on it, but if she was moving around I don’t think it would be such an issue. Maybe it’s not the best choice for a photo op, but I don’t think a few years of age would make a difference. I like it, and I like the accessories too. I don’t like her makeup and I hate her hair.

  • fungstyle

oh she looks fine. it’s not that sheer. she’s not slutting it up a la Taylor Momsen. I think the worst grievance here is that bed head.

  • StellaZafella

In my day, I’d have worn this…in fact I DID wear this, to the opening night if “Nine” in 198—…but not with those shoes.

  • alyce1213

Oh NoNoNoNoNo because age inappropriate, scary makeup, hair bump, gaudy too-high gold shoes and matchy bag.
A disaster for this lovely young lady.
I’m not sure why, but I’d love to see this on someone like Stacy Keibler.

  • decormaven

Hey, uncles, move over & I’ll join you in watching your stories. And pour a wee nip in my tea cup while you’re at it. Two jumpsuits in a row. Saints preserve us.

  • Judy_S

The problem with a sheer lace catsuit is that it probably ONLY looks good on an adolescent. If, say, Tilda or Cate were wearing this it would read ironic, if Ann H were wearing it she’d appear to be trying too hard. So, yes, burn the lace catsuits, please, now.

  • “We need a cup of tea and an hour or two to watch our stories.”

    You guys are the bestest.

  • Imasewsure

Sorry but I love this on her because she’s so young and cute. It keeps it de-sexualized for me. On an older woman, it would look tacky… and you should have seen some of the stuff I was rocking at 16 (awful and slutty)

  • conniemd

I’m confused by what’s underneath this. The top appears to have illusion netting that definitely shows her bra and belly button in the last picture. She then has black or navy blue shorts on underneath, but they stop, there’s bare thigh, then the picture showing the bottom of the pants there is something black on underneath the lace that looks look the Tommy Hilfiger label. It does look kind of chic though.

  • Rebekah Bengston

I’m the only one seeing a Sugarbaker sister here?

    • RedRaven617

      Good association. Suzanne.

  • Trisha26

It’s too mature for her (why can we see her bra?!) and the gold bag & shoes just make it worse. And yet another star who spent too much time on makeup (way too much time) and didn’t do her hair – let alone condition it.

  • unbornfawn

This look is wrong for her. The lace catsuit? You need to be fierce to pull it off. She’s just not old enough to be that fierce yet. Too much eye make-up. The overall effect makes her look like she’s playing dress-up – badly.

  • This is not “the slightest illusion of actually being sheer.” I mean, we can see her bra. If disapproving of adults who sent a 16 year old girl out to flash her bra at the world makes one old and grumpy, then call me old and grumpy.

  • She looks fantastic! Sheer lace catsuits and 16-year-old actresses SHOULDN’T go together, but it works here for some reason.

  • Worst hair and makeup…messy, lopsided and zero effort.

  • RedRaven617

It must be tough for a muture teenager to create a look that is still girly as you makes thee transition to adulthood.

  • rumcg66

I haaaaate this. And that’s regardless of the fact that I can see her bra. I just really think it’s fugly.

  • Janet B

16 years too young for that

  • lizykat

    BUT she does look adorable…

  • I’m glad I’m not the only one deeply confused & conflicted about this look. When it’s just the shot of her cuffs and shoes, it looks amazing. It’s somehow less than the sum of its parts.

  • jetpackdino

I love TLo so much right now. As a mother of a teenaged daughter myself… Just, thank you. That is all.

  • Scrolldown fug. If only it were a dress.

  • MissAmynae

WHERE is Kylie Minogue??!! This is so her jumpsuit. Kudos to Hailee. Girl’s got the chops.

  • VicD

NO! OMG – she’s a budding Kristen Stewart in this, and nobody wants to see that happen.

  • She looks like a younger Sasha Grey with that makeup. Yikes…

  • Give it to KStew!

  • I can see her boobs. She’s sixteen. That is no ok. You are not prudes, you are right.

    • bd73

you can see her bra or one piece undergarment. not her actual flesh.

  • Sorry, too old for her.

  • CPK1

The trompe l’oeil nude effect is not appropriate for a young girl. I think the garment is awesome but on someone who can legally drink

  • pookiesmom

I care less about the age-appropriateness (14 year olds wear more revealing bathing suits than this) than I do about its general HIDEOUSNESS. This is appallingly ugly to my eyes.

  • Jess5628

She looks great — how on earth is she rocking a lace jumpsuit?!? I say props. She’s not just a 16 year old, she’s a young movie star who looks like she’s enjoying her young fame and the opportunity to wear Valentino.

  • quiltrx

I can’t deal with the hair and makeup. She looks like embarrassing pictures of those of us who were early teens in the mid-80s.
The outfit is killer. It would be absolutely lurid in a brighter color–for older ladies only. But the “somber” color tones it down and makes it okay, for me anyway.

  • kathrineb

    Sleeves are UGLY.

  • bellafigura1

That is a gorgeous garment. I want it on Charlize Theron.

  • formerlyAnon

    What y’all said.

Plus, it’s not all that flattering and she’s not nearly as pretty here as she often is. Which is perhaps more to do with hair and makeup than ensemble. But still.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I want her to click those heels together and go back to Frederick’s of Hollywood and put on her real clothes. And WHERE IS HER MOTHER?

  • ankali

Chic, my ass. This is atrocious, and would still be so on someone old enough to rent a car. The sleeves alone are dealbreakers.

  • golden_valley

“to watch our stories” Oh my! that phrase zoomed me back to the 60’s. My Grandma and great aunts all watched their stories back then and then called each other to talk about them. Oh Hailee, there’s something a little off about that look. It’s kinda old lady sexy on a teenager. Strange….
