Cover Girl: Tilda Swinton for W Magazine

Posted on April 16, 2013

Yea, though we have walked through the valley of Tilda-free fashion magazines, we feared no evil, darlings. For we knew Our Lady of Fierce would come back to us some day.

Tilda Swinton covers the May 2013 issue of W magazine photographed by Tim Walker and styled by Jacob K.

Thank you, your fierceness.

We are not worthy.

By the way, just in case anyone ever posed the question, “Do you think Tilda’s fierce enough to make an old piece of tissue paper work?” There you go.

For me, the T Lo Line of the Day: “By the way, just in case anyone ever posed the question, “Do you think Tilda’s fierce enough to make an old piece of tissue paper work?” There you go.”

I am prostrate at the altar.

      • MikeW_Vegas

When I first read that I read “a piece of old toilet paper”…. been one of those days.
        But Tilda looks flawless!!

        • JosephLamour

I mean, I’m pretty sure she could make that work too.

    • Andrew Schroeder

I just wanna weep, it’s so flawless.

    • formerlyAnon

She has beautiful bones in her face. Just beautiful.

      • Introspective

and what I love is that said beauty is never over sexed, never infantilized, never comforting to conventional viewpoints. She is always a challenge. For that alone this bitch is fierce.

Sorry, did you say something, guys? I was busy listening to the choir of angels and praying for fierceness.

She’s insanely fabulous. What the fuck Tilda. Stop making it look so easy.

      • AudreysMom

modeling AND acting! Fucking Fierce Tilda makes it ALL look so easy!

    • rkdgal
    • SewingSiren

      Yes. Yes she is.

    • SewingSiren

And now i want some of that tissue paper too.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Such magnificence is beyond the power of words.

    • stubbornthoughts

She’s a walking piece of art.

    • MoHub

Bowing down and not getting up!

    • Lori

My response to seeing “Tilda Swinton for W Magazine” was, “This is going to epic,” Bless her, Swinton did not disappoint.

    • sockandaphone

have we made sure she’s human? we are not worthy of this. thank you, space alien tilda

    • MilaXX

If she can make sleeping in a box interesting, tissue paper is a cake walk.

    • Pants_are_a_must

Tilda, my goddess. Please make it another shoot where you wear impossibly gorgeous haute couture dresses while balancing on a hidden stool.

    • TheAmericaness

Is that tissue like the shroud of Tilda now?

    • MK03

It’s a couture version of The Flying Nun.

    • http://twitter.com/KathrynTewson Kathryn Tewson

reminds me of Nina Katchadourian’s “Lavatory Self-Portraits in the Flemish Style.” Which is an ENORMOUS compliment, that’s one of my very favorite works of contemporary art ever.

      • Qitkat

Unfamiliar with her, I had to do some research. Hilarious and so very creative. Love.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Those EYES. That FACE. Love her.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

The fierceness. It threatens to consume me.

    • embers618

That is some Dutch Masters realness. Only Tilda could be so classic and so modern at once.

      • VicD

Somewhere, Gwyneth, with her “pilgrim realness”, gnashes her teeth and weeps. Or – at least if she had any self awareness at all – she would.

    • PrunellaV

How she can turn “ridiculous” to “fabulous” I don’t know.

      • TAGinMO

RIGHT?! I mean, she looks like she has a freaking dowager’s hump, and yet here we all are singing her praises.

    • MzzPants

Praise the LAWD! Cuz there’s been some ugly shit today.

    • pattyw

I hate to admit that I’m distracted by the cover lines “Filler Up!” and “Does SPF Matter,” which seem patently beneath our Tilda. The image alone sells the magazine — and that’s coming from a writer.

      • charlotte

        SPF sure matters to Tilda!

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Dressing the new erogenous zone caught my eye too.

      • http://twitter.com/herong Heron

She transcends everything on that damn cover. Summer fashion – nope! Erogenous zones – meh! SPF – who cares! Fillers – hah!

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

      glorious.

    • Little_Olive

      Wow.

      Wow.

On a side note, do you think Tilda sometimes gets tired of being called every time an editor needs to make sometlhing… well… difficult, work?

    • e jerry powell

SICKENING. I need something in an IV drip.

    • quiltrx

Shoot…that ratty piece of tissue paper started out flat, and Tilda WILLED it into that shape atop her head!

      • http://www.facebook.com/fiddlecub Kevin VanOrd

This comment is amazing and must be recognized for its amazingness.

    • Le_Sigh

And all is right again with the world.

    • julnyes

      She is magnificent.

    • Beverly Kozma

I love that she can stare down a camera with no (apparent) make-up. She’s so cool.

    • MissAmynae

Her bone structure is as good as Carmen Dell’Orifice. Which means that it is that of a timeless, ageless goddess.

    • Carla_Charlton

She really is the most striking woman around these days.

    • ankali

That her face is amazing is a given, but my favorite element in this photo is the weirdness of the arms, sort of cartoonish in their proportions.

    • TieDye64

      Exquisite!

    • Anniebet

On seeing this, I had an instant picture flash into my mind of her piloting an old biplane, with God in the back seat.

    • the_archandroid

      She is living art.

    • Christine Beswick

      Shutting it DOWN

    • Ruff

Our lady of post-plague. she is like a white couture kervorkian angelus, come to put you down. Beautifully, of course. But this is less terrifying than the spread last year with the decimated earth and rubber suits. I know this is heresy, but, whoomp, there it is.

    • zenobar

So I take this to mean that abs are the new erogenous zone?

      Well, fuck.

      • lobsterlen

Well I am screwed then and not in the good way.

    • Janet B

      She leaves me speechless.

    • carnush

She’s like a painting. I want to put this up on my wall. I also want to know “What to Inject Where!”

    • DeTrop

I’m glancing through my issue of W right now. The one with Tilda S on the cover. On page 33 is a Miss Dior ad and the model is wearing a dress that looks like a very refined version of Patricia’s ‘Paris’ jacket. Anybody?

    • lobsterlen

Post modern futuristic flying nun. Love it.

      • Iroqhard

Perfect discription of this look. Tilda is of another planet, in the most fierce and fabulous way.

    • padma sallah

I have needed this. It’s like a shot of something glorious to the veins.

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

Got to run and buy that issue today!

    • marilyn

She has a classical face. She should never be out of work as an actress in historical dramas. She has that face. She also has a willowy build. I know it is strange, but her face reminds me of Tim Gunn. Are they distant relatives by any chance?

    • luluransom

She’s AMONG us, but she sure isn’t OF us. So beautiful she broke Disqus.

    • lilazander

      “Our Lady of Fierce” !!!yes!
