Cover Girl: Carey Mulligan for Harper’s Bazaar UK

Posted on April 29, 2013

Here’s your Pretty of the Day, darlings: Harper’s Bazaar, doing right by Miss Carey:

Carey Mulligan covers the June 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK magazine in Prada photographed by Tom Allen and styled by Cathy Kasterine.

What a beautiful cover.

      Wow.

      Ethereal much?

    • Nicholas

Too much fairy twee for me.

      • http://geekentertainment.tv irinaslutsky

too much skinny neck for me

      • http://twitter.com/EmFairbank Emily

Yea, her eyes look red. The colour of them, not bloodshot.

    • hughman

That’s a lot of blush. It reminds me of when I wake up and discover I slept funny on the pillow.

    • lexilexi

The difference between Carey and the model is shocking! She does look ethereal, not butch. (not that there’s anything wrong with that.)

It is quite a beautiful cover but it’s a bit too overall gauze-y looking for me. I might have put her name in the same dark pink as the rosettes on her coat. As it is, the rosettes are the focus of attention, and I imagine that’s not what the magazine editors really wanted. But that’s a graphic design quibble, and not a style one.

Non sequitur alert: I was in Dallas last week and took the opportunity to stop into Neiman-Marcus. TLo, I thought of you as I roamed the aisles of the curiously empty store, gazing at designer creations…..I remembered you writing that the clothing at fashion week really had to be seen to be appreciated. You are SO right! I was awed at the artistry, ridiculous detail, and sheer creativity of the gowns I saw. They were getting ready for a trunk show of Oscar de la Renta Fall collection, and the selections were just scrumptious. Can’t wait to see some of these on celebs soon! I also gaped (and took photos) of shelves of designer shoes, McQueen handbags, Judith Leiber minaudieres, and the most gorgeous, filmy lingerie I’ve ever seen. What a treat!

      • Isabel

        Which NM store?

        • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

          The flagship store in Dallas.

    • MilaXX

sheesh! Compared to what the model looked like on the runway, there really was no where to go but up.

    • roble ridge

Gorgeous cover. What’s up with her hair, though? It looks grandma-thin.

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

        It’s terribly overprocessed, isn’t it?

      • Spicytomato1

Yeah, the hair is bad. Reminds me of this elderly lady I used to work with who kept her cotton candy-esque beehive intact by wrapping her head in toilet paper when she slept. Sometimes she’d come to work with little bits of the toilet paper stuck to it.

    • alyce1213

Pretty, ethereal cover. Scroll down horror — the runway model scares the hell out of me.
So glad they didn’t show Carey in the rest of the outfit.

So much better than her Gatsby Vogue cover.

    • Pants_are_a_must

Too much photoshopping on her eye color, but it’s a really nice change from that horrid Vogue cover.

      • Nicholas

Gah, I didn’t even see that! She looks like a Twilight vampire!

My kingdom for an unphotoshopped magazine cover of a woman.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ginny-Ellsworth/534496198 Ginny Ellsworth

I think that might be the National Geographic.

    • stubbornthoughts

Sooooo purdy. She looks like Galadriel’s younger, more modern elf sister. Is that her natural eye color though?

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

The Model has Terminator The Sequel Legs. Look, one of them was restocked with a different VIN number.

    • http://twitter.com/TheKarishmaster TheKarishmaster

Her hair resembles the consistency of cotton candy.

    • TheAmericaness

I swear I had to scroll between the model and the cover four times playing “One of these things IS like the other” before I made the connection of the jacket.

Edit: It was quick scrolling – I wasn’t comparing for an hour. :D

I don’t know who she is, but for a moment I saw Keira Knightly.

    • formerlyAnon

Cover certainly does present that coat in the best possible way.

    • Anniebet

If I were the model I’d look pissed too.

Carey is so very pink, except for her so very brown eyes.

    • AnnaleighBelle

I’ve never looked at her before and thought, “Beautiful girl.” Yes, Bazaar did right by her.

    • silaria

Give her pointy ears, and she’d make a great elf or fae. XD

    • Monkey Toe

      Photoshop much?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1229199146 Tara Gray Burkholder

      Five head.

      • kathrineb

        What is five head?

It’s funny because on this blog, I thought the Vogue cover didn’t look so great, but every time I see it in the checkout aisle I can’t stop staring at it. Now I think she is stunning on that cover. This one, I think she is of course very pretty but the fuzzy hair is bothering me. I wonder if my opinion will change when I see this one in the checkout aisle.

    • http://twitter.com/commish24 commish24

I wish they’d put a little eyeliner on her. She looks a bit too wax-mannequinnish for me.

    • demidaemon

True the cover is beautiful. But that runway photo is sheer record scratch.

    • http://twitter.com/Sinead_Doyle Sinéad Doyle

The flowers on the coat are pulling all the attention on this cover because the colour stands out so much. And they remind me of the big patch flowers on my niece’s raincoat so it’s not working for me as much as it should. IMHO that hair and make-up is calling out for a Valentino dress.

    • decormaven

All it needs are some little bluebirds chirping on a tree branch.

    • Tatiana Luján

      That is so her pink.

    • SewingSiren

Beautiful. I like this style of magazine cover were the typeface isn’t so glaring.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

It’s a little too pink for me. But girl is giving good face.

    • http://robot-heart.tumblr.com heartbot

      So much photoshop.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=571205045 Kent Roby

I really want to take her home….and get some conditioner in that hair.

    • nannypoo

Awful hair. She has a sort of challenging look on her face, maybe daring us to try to look as fabulous as she does. It’s really lovely.

    • PeaceBang

Grandma chic. I am not feeling it.

    • guest2visits

Pretty, but the hair needs a touch of dewy-moisture in places to give it some life; too dry and bleached looking.

    • Guest

Tastes like diabetes. But overall, me gusta mucho.

    • musicandmochi

Tastes like diabetes. But overall, me gusta mucho. Hooray for old-school, soft femininity!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Elaine-Lang/100000366510311 Elaine Lang

Too washed out, I think her look and the cover’s graphic design would have been better served with a few more pops of color, perhaps that deeper rose from the rosettes on her lips and in the lettering for her name? (as another BK has already wisely spotted) Either that or a whisper of eyeliner or something….this photo looks like the photographer didn’t quite grasp the concept of portrait exposure.

    • CatherineRhodes

Really? I think she looks stoned… and at least a generation older. Ugh.

    • kathrineb

      So pretty!
