Cathy Cambridge Double Shot

Posted on April 25, 2013

It’s probably not fair to make the Princess comparisons but since she ranks as one of the most privileged women in the world, we’re thinking she can bear the burden. Our point: This reminds us of early ’60s Princess Grace:

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge attends an evening reception to celebrate the work of The Art Room charity at The National Portrait Gallery in London, England in an a Emilia Wickstead dress.

Serving up Serene Highness realness. “Lovely” is the word du jour, darlings. Simple, beautiful and somehow fairy-tale regal. It’s like a maternity dress for Cinderella.

But what’s this? Has the Duchess, in a burst of hormones, said “Fuck it all, I’ma keep it REAL?” Consider:

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge arrives to visit The Willows Primary School, Wythenshawe to launch a new school counseling program in Manchester, England in an Erdem dress.

Erdem Resort 2013 Collection

Of course it’s a little harder to say she’s keepin’ it real in Erdem, but still. This has far more of a personal style statement feel to it than, say, that QEII coat she wore the other day. This just feels more like something she chose to wear because she loves it rather than because it checks off all the boxes on appropriate Royal Wear. She looks fantastic.

  • I think the Erdem is lovely. I agree the ice blue has that 60s feel, partly because of that very stiff fabric. I think my grandmother had a dress like it. She certainly had one in a gold shantung. Hate the grey suede shoes with the blue dress though.

    • BazoDee

At this point GF needs comfortable shoes and I’m willing to cut her some slack on those!

      • Totally agree. i wouldn’t blame her if she broke out a pair of Birkenstocks.

    • gabbilevy

They look blue on my screen… the dusky version of the same color as the dress.

      • Ah – on mine they are a clashy grey.

        • NC_Meg

Same here. That’s my only problem with either of these looks, those shoes do not match!

  • JasmineAM

That first dress’s fabric looks so uncomfortable. It looks like Betty Draper’s fugly quilted housecoat.

  • AwesomeMargie

    Wow. Gorgeous!

  • She also seems to have hit that glowing stage of pregnancy. She looks gorgeous in both dresses.

    • H2olovngrl

Agree. Her first trimester looked like it was taking a toll on her, bless her heart. Every time I saw a picture of her, all I could think, was the poor dear is carrying that baby all in her face. She has the second trimester sparkle and energy now, and I am so happy to see it.

  • Since I am just about the same number weeks along as the lovely Princess, I would say that QEII coat debacle can easily be chalked up to the regal version of an moment. The rest of us eat ice cream out of the container and refuse to change out of sweats, poor Kate can only resort to shopping in her grandmother in law’s closet.

  • Sobaika

She looks so natural and so her in the Erdem.

    • Little_Olive

The first one, though I’m not implying she looks uncomfortable or anything, is a bit too “pregnant well-behaved princess” IMO. The top is too close to postpartum hospital wear (I *wish* I look like that after I have a baby)

    • Yesssss. I saw these pics online somewhere and hoped I’d see them here. She looks fabulous and comfortable and sexy. 10 points for Gryffindor. She’s in Gryffindor, right?

      • aj_hawks

        Absolutely in Gryffindor.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

The second look is her best in a while – back to the Kate we know and love!

  • The color on the first dress is pretty but the tailoring is horrendous, with the seam in the front. The fabric seems too stiff for this kind of dress too. I don’t care for the second dress but at least it seems to be well cut.

    • CommentsByKatie

That seam is in perfectly even gathers? What are you seeing in the tailoring that I am not seeing? And for me, if the fabric were not stiff and hung down or clung more, it would ruin the whole joy/life of the dress.

    • Mismarker

Completely agree on the first dress. It looks like it was home sewn by a third grader.

  • moppet

Bless her heart, she’s starting to get that pregnant “stance” (pic 3 of her in the Erdem). It’s really hard not to just shove that tummy out there at a certain point. I know from experience!

I love both dresses, particularly the Erdem, but I feel like the bodice of the first dress is a little blocky, or something. It just seems just the slightest touch too covered up or blousy or something. Those of you who have more fashion knowledge can probably come up with much better terms than I’m struggling with now.

    But it’s a pretty color!

    • H2olovngrl

Thankfully, she isn’t overdoing the pregnancy belly cradle so popular among celebs.

  • cornpicker73

    love. just love ’em both.

  • ringthing

She gets a pass on everything due to pregnancy as far as I’m concerned – both looks are lovely – but at some point that harsh makeup needs to be dealt with.

    • Tatiana Luján

  • BazoDee

That blue is a lovely color on her. The side view makes it seem really stiff!
I really want to like the second one, but I don’t. They clearly used one larger one and then cut it to fit, but the sleeves look so large and it just doesn’t work for me

  • TAGinMO

Not only is she glowing as suggested by an earlier comment, she looks just plain healthier in these photos than she did shortly before her pregnancy was announced, when she seemed a bit too thin and at times almost gaunt. The pregnancy pounds have been very kind to her face and arms in that regard.

    • A.W.

Agreed. When your handlers let you eat a cheeseburger for the first time in years, how could you not glow with happiness like this?!

      • TAGinMO

        Now, now…

    • claudemtl777

i was thinking the exact same thing

    • gracedarling

Well, they call it morning sickness for a reason. And hers was pretty severe.

      • H2olovngrl

Oops. Just commented the same thing.

    • Oh, honestly. Haven’t we all heard TLo’s rules about body commentary by now? Cut it out.

    • H2olovngrl

Didn’t she suffer from some pretty severe morning sickness in the beginning?

  • musicandmochi

If only she could dress like the second look all the time. Lord knows she can afford it.

  • She has rarely looked as full stop lovely, or genuinely happy.

    • drdarke

Gods – she is just what a Princess should be, isn’t she?

Maybe she’ll retain just a touch of that pregnancy softness once she has the Royal Brat….?

    • Coolekat

Pregnancy has made her lush, a little rounder.

      • TheDivineMissAnn

I was thinking along the same lines. She looks like a pregnant woman, allowing herself to gain a little weight

    • P M

Now if only she’d ditch that lower line eyeliner……

  • These both look really good – the first one has a 1960s girlishness that really works in a maternity dress, I feel like.
The second is just straight up fabulous. Pregnancy WERQ.

  • Janet B

    The Erdem is perfect.

  • EAV

Ah, those Erdem pictures. I never tire of seeing those slack-jawed models.

  • nannypoo

She looks great in both of these. It must be really hard to be famous, pregnant, attractive and dignified all at the same time.

    Good for her.

  • Buffy

She looks great in both of these and thank god the Wickstead has no visible closures like the others she’s worn (sorry, pet peeve). Love the Erdem and hopefully she can get it resized to wear again after baby arrives. A bazillion times better than the housecoat from a few days back.

  • NDC_IPCentral

She looks attractive and happy in both – well done, Duchess. I think each is lovely on her and seems to be occasion appropriate.. And, though this is de trop to mention, she’s put a little pregnancy weight on that is quite becoming. Not that I’ve ever been pregnant, but I am impressed that she’s in high heels under the circs. Swelling feet….

    • Rachel Wertheimer

I just gave birth a couple weeks ago, and I’ll tell you-I had HORRIFIC morning sickness, so I learned to continually hydrate and poof, no swollen ankles or feet. I actually wound up more comfy in heels because of pressure redistribution.

  • Tatiana Luján

her baby bump exists in some pictures and in some othersit just dissapears.
She looks lovely in both dresses

    • It’s a combination of the cut of the clothing and the baby changing position.

  • lbl

For the Erdem, I just love that she’s wearing an older collection. I HATE how celebs jump to the newer ones and ignore the older, oftentimes better or more appropriate, collections. Is there a legitimate reason for that?

    • Reason? Sales. PR. Marketing. Same reason why everyone stops talking about the iPhone 4S the second the iPhone 5 comes out. New is better.

  • I shouldn’t want to shave a pregnant woman’s head to wear as my own, but here we are. So SHINY. And that Erdem dress is amazing. A pattern on her! So glorious.

  • mjude

she is so adorable. love both looks. that is how you dress when you are pregnant. some wannabees should be paying attention.

  • VicD

Love both outfits! She looks wonderful.

  • pulpytomato

Both looks are gorgeous and she looks SO happy. Some of her best outfits have been Erdem and Emilia always gives her classy and simple.

  • crash1212

Both looks are pretty fab. I love the grey shoes with the first look – unexpected. Nicely done, Cathy!

  • BeeBeauNYC

I can’t believe that she’s so pregnant and yet so small that she can fit into these tiny dresses. I hope England’s future King/Queen is getting sufficient nutrition! Also, she is totes 100% gorgeous in both outfits. That Erderm piece suits her style so well.

  • stubbornthoughts

    Double WERQ. She’s absolutely glowing!

  • Eclectic Mayhem

Ooooh – I like the Erdem. Lovely!

  • The second look is definitely a winner! That said, I know how hard it is to find attractive pregnant looks. She’s not going to be doing the skin-tight, “look at me, I’m pregnant” looks that I frankly find annoying. But I come from a different era.

    • Betty Deuce would never let her do THAT, not even if she wanted to! But she seems like the kind of girl who wouldn’t want to, which is refreshing.

  • MisScarlett

Ohhhh, I’ve been looking forward to reading TLo’s take on Kate’s latest! I agree she looks lovely in both, I also thought “Grace Kelly” with the blue and I must say– if you are going to be inevitably compared to past princesses and want to steer away from Diana for various reasons– Princess of Monaco is a great choice. I love that Kate manages to keep it her own at the same time. The Erdem is so “rock star royal” (contradiction in terms, I know). I love it. Glad to see her looking so happy and healthy.

  • Bursting with health, pretty, youthful, stylish, colorful, impeccably styled, chic, elegant and relaxed all at once.
    Princessing: You’re doing it right!

    Snaps of envy.

  • That Erdem is singing her praises. I am not worthy.

  • The first dress is pretty, but unremarkable. The second dress is gorgeous AND memorable. I like the first, but I LOVE the second!

  • BrooklynBomber

I like the pendant the guy in pack of her is wearing, though I’d probably wear it on a thinner ribbon or a chain.

  • I’m not crazy about the Erdem dress, but I appreciate that she wore it, while quite pregnant. There’s a certain rebelliousness about it that I like.

  • jw_ny

I applaud her for not holding the underside of her belly in any of the shots!

  • Fordzo

She has an excellent tailor – her hems are perfectly level all the way around. It bugs me when maternity hems ‘ride up’ in the front.

  • I’ve always loved that seafoam color and it isn’t one that most can wear successfully. Agree that she looks much better than before…

  • Spicytomato1

I can’t get over how great she looks. Both dresses are lovely, although I think I like the second one better. My only quibble with that look is the shoes, they kind of frump it up a little bit. A version of the mary janes the models are wearing would have been amazing, I think.

  • formerlyAnon

She is so perfect for her job. I always say that, because it’s always running through my head in all caps when I see these pictures.

  • Anniebet

Oooh, she’s decided it’s spring. Begone coats! Lovely woman in lovely clothes. The Erdem is spectacular and suits her to a T. The little bit of extra weight is very becoming as well.

  • Leigh

Quite possibly the most beautiful pregnant woman on the planet!

  • decormaven

Happy sigh! She’s great in both looks.

  • Sara__B

Aw. She never fails to make me smile and feel warm and fuzzy inside. So charming!

    • TheDivineMissAnn

This^^^ She is my first girl crush!

  • MilaXX

Both looks are head and shoulder upon that mumsy look from the other day. Imma give her a pass on that one bad look.

  • I love both looks. She looks radiant.

  • Cheryl

Her long, loose brown hair looks so lovely, being blown around in the wind. Especially in the second-to-the-last picture, where she’s petting a…dare I say it?…spaniel.

    • Anniebet

Nice doggie, I hadn’t noticed it til you mentioned it. Then I got fixated on the lady behind our Kate and the pup. Couldn’t look away. And that’s all I say about that. *slaps own wrist*

    • hotpaprika

That dog is the real star of the photoshoot.

  • Gotta love her! She looks wonderful

  • Ah yes the second trimester – the fun one. Morning sickness is over, not too much weight gain and/or cankle swelling and the bump is still adorable. Third trimester comes and she’ll feel like the Hindenburg.

  • Good lord, she looks fantastic.

  • I really love both these looks. She is young and I know that sometimes she has to do the hat and purse thing but these two dresses – and they way they are styled – is so refreshing and youthful and absolutely, lovely. I just wish that she would loosen up about the pumps. This time of year wouldn’t her swollen feet (I’m assuming) find some happiness in some peep-toe slingbacks. Pumps land with such a thud sometimes and I don’t like the ones she chose for the Wickstead.

  • bellafigura1

Girl. those are both your dresses.. The Erdem really has the perfect feel as day dress — Kardashian, are you seeing this?. The light blue dress is perfection.

  • j_anson

  • Love her hairstyle in the first set of photos. How nice to see it off her face and away from her shoulders.

  • siriuslover

I love both of those dresses on her! So beautiful and flattering to her body. And the colors on both are stunning.

  • ankali

Both dresses are great, and she looks great in them. However, I am really looking forward to her inevitable postnatal haircut. Her hair in both of these sets of photos is just so girlish.

  • ms_kat

In the blue dress, though, she looks like she has a waist in the front shot. Any maternity dress that can make a woman look like she still has a waist is amazing.

Signed, was pregnant with twins and lost my waistline at week 4.

  • Beth513

Best princess ever! Seriously, I was totally the kind of little girl who wanted to be a princess when I grew up, and this is exactly the kind of princess dresses grown up me would have wanted to wear had I become a princess.

    • Pennymac

I was going to say this, but you beat me to it. What you said X2!

  • She looks fantastic in both pictures, but I love seeing her in a print and in colors.

  • hotpaprika

Both dresses are beautiful but I think she looks better in the second. She can wear darker colours better than pastels I think. Isn’t the fitting in the blue dress a bit weird around her bust? Kind of loose. Nice shoes, hopefully the ugly wannabe pump trade will die soon. Though I wish she’d wear more comfortable shoes by now, if anything for the baby’s safety.

  • demidaemon

That first dress highly resembles what Ke$ha wore to the NewNowNext awards, doesn’t it? Although Cathy here is outclassing her in every way, eh?

  • Claudia

The blue on her is beautiful. She’s got the preggo glow.

  • Judy_S

Adore the Erdem and her in the Erdem. The blue dress reminds me of Diana, and is as you say completely lovely in a princessy way. I also like that in this formal situation she is wearing a dress that could actually be construed as a maternity dress, though I guess it need not be.

  • ferngilly

Betcha she reads your blog. I love the Erdem dress and really hope that there is a copy of this soon, somehow somewhere.

  • Alyssa

That Erdem look may be one of my favorites of hers ever.

  • PeaceBang

The first look is so 50’s throwback it irritates the enamel off my teeth. The second look is happy, pretty pregnant princess of 2013.

  • Allyson Wells

“maternity dress for cinderella” that’s exactly it! Love both these looks.

  • xmixiex

    pretty pretty princess!

  • snarkykitten

eeeeee what a cute lil king charles dog they have!! (whoever they is. That pup may never wash its head again)

  • MzzPants

The perfect hem displayed in the first dress gives me joy.

  • Prints give me life <3

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

Both looks are stunning, The first is more formal and the second is fabulous yet relaxed. Mrs. Princess Cathy knows what she’s doing!

  • I think she’s a fabulous dresser with beautiful hair. However, I’d love to change her makeup. A heavy lid has made its return unfortunately, IMO, but I’d love to see her with a couple coats of mascara with brown eyeshadow on her lids and above her lids (blended, not too racoon-ish). The thick liner makes her eyes look hard. Otherwise, she’s perfecto.

  • mhlmh

LOVE the second look. The first one, not so much. Put it in the pile with grandmother-in-law’s coat from the other day. Maybe it’s the colors. I think the darker, bolder colors suit her much more.
