Carrie Underwood in Naeem Khan

Posted on April 08, 2013

Oh, Miss Carrie. This would have looked so pretty without the honky-tonk hair.

Carrie Underwood attends the 2013 Academy of Country Music Awards in a Naeem Khan strapless draped gown in peony print gazar with a black gazar belt accessorized with a Jimmy Choo clutch and David Yurman jewelry.

Naeem Khan Resort 2013 Collection/Model: Janice Alida

Granted it’s too big on you and we’re not convinced that giant sash actually works for you, but it’s a really pretty, striking dress. And since “striking” is almost never in your wheelhouse, because you tend to favor Country Barbie looks, we’re just so pleased to see you break out of your style rut a little. Nicely – if imperfectly – done, girl.

But seriously, that hair makes you look like you manage a nail salon in a strip mall.

It looks like she got hit with a shrink ray and now both her dress and wig are too big for her.

      • kmk05

FREEZE RAY! (I’m sorry I just had to do it). I think the sash really isn’t working: it’s taking it from striking to ‘prom’. And the dress is so big her chest end up looking strange. I don’t mind the hair so much, but that pose is ridiculous.

        • http://surelysonsy.blogspot.com/ Jessica | Surely Sonsy

maybe the sash was added because of the fit issues – not enough time to/can’t alter?

          • kmk05

That’s what I’m thinking, but it just makes it look lumpier. Couldn’t her stylist have pinned it or something?

          • MilaXX

Yes, to disguise the fact that it’s too big/help keep the dress on

      • Eva_baby

Oh, dear. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong. But yeah, shrink ray covers it.

    • SewingSiren

I love the print. Over all it is a huge improvement for her. But as usual too much pancake make-up.

    • Pants_are_a_must

That sash screams to me “this dress will SWALLOW ME WHOLE if I don’t define my waist.” Have a little more faith in yourself, 90s hair.

    • Sarah

Or, a little frazzled because the lunch/late breakfast rush is just ending on her shift at Waffle House. And yeah, too big.

    • 3boysful

As if the hem weren’t a giveaway, she’s hunching forward in every shot, desperately hoping the top won’t slip. The idea of the hair’s okay, but it’s too sloppy.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

I could have ignored the hair, but the cummerbund! O, the cummerbund!

      • Anne Elise

Yes. Exactly. It sort of cheapens the look, if you know what I mean. It goes from being gorgeous to looking like I could buy it in the juniors section of Peebles.

    • stubbornthoughts

Sash definitely looks like it’s only in place because the dress is too big. I don’t mind the big hair though, it IS the ACM Awards, after all! Country it up! She looks lovely.

    • Little_Olive

It could be a striking dress, but no, not even with better hair. Removing the sash would be a vast improvement, but still I think this dress calls for someone with a “darker” sartorial aura.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

Darlin’s, when you are attending a country music event, you got to have big har! You wouldn’t want the other girls to point and laugh at her, now would you?

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Standing up straight would help a good deal, too.

      • frannyprof

YES!! I am so over the slouchy pose.

      • MissAmynae

        Yeah she looks realllly uncomfortable.

    • Frank_821

also the cut of fabric they use doesn’t work as nicely as the sample. Having that big pink flower falling over her crotch is rather distracting. the dress on the model has the print falling in the right places

      • Meg0GayGuys6

I blame (or give credit to) TLo and the BKs for opening my eyes to the placement of print in relation to boobs and/or crotch. Now I can only think Rosebud (from Citizen Kane).

        • http://profiles.google.com/awilsongirl Amy Wilson

I was just about to type the same thing. A few years ago, I would have never noticed the placement of the flower but thanks to my fellow BKs, that was the first thing that I noticed on this picture. We are a wonderfully scrutinizing bunch.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

If you had told me this was an unconventional materials challenge winner, I would have believed you. It seems like a big, bold wallpaper pattern to me. And that is some road here in my pick up truck with windows down hair, if I’ve ever seen it.

    • AndresB

With such a bold print, placement of the pattern is everything. Gorgeous on the model, goofy on her with the big fat central blossom running riot and overwhelming the whole look.
Her posture screams ‘Is there an orthopedic in the room?!’

      • Wellworn

I so agree on the pattern placement, that ruined the dress more than the sash. But the sash is bad, it should have been a thinner belt. It might have been hiding something, as others have said. Her hair is the worst part of this picture though. Had she done a complete updo, it would have done justice to the princessy romance of the dress, and also would have shown off the earrings better. Too bad, because the original dress is beautiful and it would have been beautiful even on a smaller person like Carrie had it been done better.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_26F5YJPMIK5OMIMBUBYFZISM6A Howard

I don’t care for this print at all it feels heavy an it swallows her up an the model as well, I find this print distracting , maybe it would be more palitable in another color.

    • meowing

Oh yee haw (seemed appropriate on this post)–after the recent changes in Disqus, my meows were silenced. Appropos to Carrie’s hair, though, which looks like a bitter kitten clawed around in there on the way to the venue.

    • bayusc

Sash is a little bridesmaid-y, no?

    • MilaXX

This needs a ponytail and a smaller belt

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

It’s like a hurricane of hairspray attacked her just prior to the step-and-repeat.

    • nannypoo

Country music awards again? They are the most self-congratulatory group I have ever heard of. No one else needs to honor themselves so frequently. Maybe they feel inferior because of hair like this.

    • http://twitter.com/ashleynalvarez Ashley Alvarez

I’m almost positive she’s hunching so as to get her collarbones showing more….

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

That, or she’s *extremely* uncomfortable in what she’s wearing.

    • H3ff

I just find this woman dreadfully bland.

      • girliecue

Me too. Dreadfully bordering on criminally bland.

    • http://www.facebook.com/bert.keeter Bert Keeter

The waiter at the Italian restaurant you ate at last night wants his cumberbund back!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000088447181 Sam Smith

Luv that dress, and luv the print, but don’t like the big sash, would have much preferred a thin belt as I like the idea of a belt.

    • warnerave

doesnt she own a mirror? does she seriously think it’s a good hairstyle??

    • crash1212

I love the model version, which has better peony placement on the body and darker tones – also because it does not deploy that stupid cummerbund…WTH was she thinking? Totally unnecessary.

    • decormaven

This isn’t Big Hair, it’s just messy hair. And thumps on the noggin of the stylist who added this sad sash to a striking dress.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

The dress is gorgeous, and I love the print, but she seems a little too petite for it. She’s practically swimming in this dress. And UGH, the honky-tonk hair.

    • LaSylphide

Awful hair, hate the lipstick, hate the slouchy posture, love, love ,love the dress. I’m guessing the sash is holding the whole thing on; she’s standing like she expects the top to fall down.

    • Donna Tabor

While I’m the first one to love the use of prints, this particular print is way too big and bold for someone her size. Scaled down it could have looked much prettier on her, but as it is she should have just nixed this one and chosen something more flattering.

    • murt

haha – I love the hair on her actually; she is a country music star after all – she’s following tradition!

    • http://twitter.com/Glam_Dixie Glam Dixie

Her hair was down and looked 10x better when she performed on stage, but if you want honky tonk hair the ACM’s are the place for it. I do agree the dress looks a little big for her.

    • conniemd

The print on the model’s dress is cut completely differently than Carrie’s dress. You don’t even see the green at the top of the big flower on the model’s dress, plus the patterns used on the bodice are completely different. Guess each dress size was cut as it came off the bolt.

    • kalisa

How else are people gonna know she’s a country star?

    • understateddiva

Miss Carrie, you are gorgeous. But your makeup and hair too often say “runner-up on The Bachelor”.

    • guest2visits

I have no problem with the mussy hair, I think it’s working for her but the dress in not; looks like a bed sheet.
Looks way too big on her, maybe it’s the print.. I don’t really like it on the model either.

Cough, cough…..I own and operate a nail salon….

I have a good business and I work hard. How is my hair supposed to look?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=783500814 Amelia Pitts

I think it’s ok to have honky-tonk hair at country music award shows. Oscars? No. Country music? Hell if I care.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001998855370 Fatima Siddique

Why is she slouched forward like that? tsk tsk

    • ccm800

Do you think they style her like this to keep her down-home relatable?

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Man she has pretty skin though.

    • kathrineb

Again with the Country Music Awards hair…
