Carey Mulligan in Victoria Beckham

Posted on April 19, 2013

Oh, BRAVA, Miss Carey.

Carey Mulligan attends the Tiffany & Co. Blue Book Ball at Rockefeller Center in New York City in a Victoria Beckham tuxedo suit gown accessorized with Saint Laurent shoes and Tiffany & Co. jewelry.

Yes, dear. We can see the very expensive Tiffany ring you were lent. You can relax now.

We absolutely love this look on her. The only reason she’s not getting a “WERQ!” and snaps of respect is because she apparently overslept and missed her makeup appointment that afternoon.

Why wear a really dramatic suit like that, slap on a dozen mortgage’s worth of diamonds, and then forego the face paint? We don’t get it. We also don’t much get those shoes. And we also think that’s too much sternum for you, dear.

So we guess what we’re saying is… BRAVA, Victoria Beckham. Because everything that doesn’t have Vicki’s fingerprints on it isn’t much working for us.

I like it on the model. On Carey, not so much.

    • Tess Danesi

I don’t understand or approve of those split sleeves.

      • twigg

They remind me of wearing your man’s tux jacket over your shoulders at the end of a long party.

        • Little_Olive

Oh, chivalrous men. You are greatly missed.

    • foodycatAlicia

I just don’t think she has the dress-wearing chops for this. Or the height. This needs a lovely tall androgyne. She doesn’t look bad by any means but this needs a lot more presence.

    • Tatiana Luján

I actually think she looks super cute with a clean face and that the lack of makeup goes well with the sharpness of the suit.
But her hair color is way too light and her head looks weird.
I don’t like the shoes with this look either.

    • Sobaika

      That model is werqing.

    • Silly Grrl

Agreed on the facepaint. She looks like she’s pulled her hair back to wash her makeup off after getting home from the office.

    • charlotte

Her arms look like they emerge from her torso. Cannot approve of that.

    • Courtenay P

Honey, send this over to Tilda.

      • FlyoverFi

        That was my *exact* reaction.

        • AndresB

Straightaway. Funny because Godlike Tilda and Posh Spice barely co-exist on the same planet, but there you go.
Mulligan looks like she cannot understand her own look. Poor Dear, I think she’s rather overstrained.

      • ilikemints

Yeah, the combo of clean face, dramatic suit, and platinum combed-back hair screamed “I wanna be Tilda!” Too bad, because she’s so tiny she looks more like a little girl dressing as Queen Swinton for Halloween.

        • Courtenay P

Did you see the full spread from the W magazine shoot? Queen Swinton indeed.

          • annabelle archer

I was nearly faint after viewing.

            • Courtenay P

me too! my heart started racing and I was short of breath. and then the rest of my day was infinitely better.

        • decormaven

Looks like Tammy got to wear couture.

        • Agatha Guilluame

YES!! Agree. Agree. Agree. She looks like a child playing dress up. She naturally looks like a pre-teen. So to wear a tuxedo suit and no makeup…she looks like those photos of children in their parents clothes. I think my uncles confused liking the outfit with it being appropriate for the wearer.

      • princessricky

maybe she’s grooming to be the next tilda? baby tilda? tween tilda?

        • StellaZafella

        •ía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

Oh I don’t see that happening for her. She’s beautiful but she’s no Tilda.

      • quiltrx

You have just spawned a new phrase in my feeble mind…”we can’t ALL be Tilda, darling.”

    • Bibliocephalus ~

That’s just too much look for you sweetie.

    • Trisha26

The greatest mystery of life: Why do womenswear designers idolize the 12 year old boy physique?

    • BrooklynBomber

Hmmmm…..not doing it for me, and that’s the wrong blonde for her (not sure any blonde would be right).

      • DeborahJozayt

That and the color on her eyebrows are giving me the twitches.

    • forward_slash_PRS

When I was a choir director/organist, I wore a choir robe with slits in the sleeves, so my arms could be free . . . and a satin stole. Hallelujah!

    • Martha Deutsch

Actually, I like the shoes. The lack of make-up is what ruins it. But if this were In-Out I’d vote IN.

    • DaveUWSNYC

Sleek, sternum-baring, dramatic…puts me in mind of Laura Bennett

    • jetpackdino

Love it. A wee touch of the consumptive… But I love it.

    • Lola Channing

this is a useful outfit if you want to sneak in a friend strapped to your back. Otherwise, it’s rather hideous.

    • pop_top

She looks so uncomfortable to me. The model is killin it though.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

If only she owned it a bit more – def. needs color on the face and a more confident posture. Overall I’m surprised at how great she looks in it…

    • nannypoo

Wow. I don’t like any of it. I don’t even like her jewelry. And that hair is a disaster.

    • Yulie29

I’m sorry, but no. Some of Victoria Beckham’s stuff is only meant to be worn by models and Ms. Beckham herself. Or, as others have suggested, Tilda.

Is Mulligan contractually obligated to stick with that hair color? It’s doing nothing for her.

    • annabelle archer

One man’s BRAVA is another man’s OH HONEY, NO.

    • MilaXX

I like this look. I like that unlike SJP & Kate Hudson, just because there was tons of loaner jewelry, she showed a bit of restraint and only wore earrings and a ring. I like the shoes because they do not pull focus from the outfit. I even like the pale makeup in a Swinton kind of way.
      Well done Sally Sparrow.

    • Cynica

She’s not and never will be Tilda (don’t try, sweetie–it’s just sad), but kudos for wearing something other than a blue dress to this shindig.

    • msdamselfly

      This is sooo unflattering

    •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

If she’d back off the bleach and fire her makeup person, I’d be singing her praises. Even with that amount of sternum.

    • stubbornthoughts

This is a stunning design. It’s a real shame she didn’t put on any makeup. Only Tilda could pull this off makeup-less.

    • MajorBedhead

She looked better in her shop assistant’s pinny in Blink. Sally Sparrow, go change you’re outfit.

    • Imasewsure

Don’t love this personally but I respect it. It is definitely awesome even without the proper facepaint

    • SophieCollier

Love the clothes, but she looks so tense it’s making me uncomfortable.

    • myristica_fragrans

she looks so old and washed out. she needs a different shade of blond and some color on her face.

    • BayTampaBay

Not my cup of tea…but….she does look good.

    • filmcricket

I’m guessing the idea was to match the menswear with the clean face and the pulled-back hair, but it’s too severe for a button-like cutie like her, it needs a Swinton or a Blanchett to pull something like this off. Dig the shoes and would love a closer look at the ring – it looks like it might be the one from the Tiffany Bubbles line that I’ve been coveting for years.

    • alyce1213

She looks like a naughty little towheaded boy who got into his dad’s closet with scissors.

    • Indovina

It’s different and unexpected, but I think she’s too meepish* for it.

      * Take, for example, the third picture of her here. Now, imagine a thought bubble above her head that reads “Meep”. Exactly. And she usually kind of looks like that.

      • marlie

    • Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

Actually, I only like the shoes.

    • formerlyAnon

Very, very nice. But she’s not owning it.

    • marlie

All of this is great except she needs some color on her face. AND she needs to relax a bit.

    • Qitkat

      Not a werq, a WREQ.

    • kathrineb

It works! Love he drama of the suit.

    • portlandmermaid

the dry looking makeup and total lack of hair color makes her look like she’s one step away from a bar stool, a burning cigarette, and calling everyone “doll,” in a rough, raspy voice.

    • Eovaai

This could be so great, but the hair and lack of make-up aren’t working for me.

    • Anniebet

Dislike this. Rather intensely. All of it – bat costume, boney chest, blatant ring display, bad hair, no makeup, and where are Frownies when she needs them?

    • bellafigura1

Is the official name “tuxedo suit gown” as the caption calls it? That’s funny, a whole new category. It’s weird but I’m ok with it, although hair is too severe.

    • rkdgal

I just can’t sign off on her blondeness. Even with the dyed brows, it doesn’t work for me. But the outfit is FAB.

    • m0r0

      Another Ghostly greyge face.

    • A Shiny O’Connor

Honey, if you’re going to stand in the limelight (with Michelle Williams and Kate Hudson throwing you dagger eyes), at least put on some lipstick.

She’s too doll-like (and un-Tilda) to werk the blank canvas.

    • oldbobbydraper

i couldn’t tell if she was closer to 40 or 50 so i googled her just now and she is 27!?!?!? eek!

    • jw_ny

I don’t think this suits her…she too young and diminutive for that cape.

This seems more appropriate for Gwyneth.

    • StillGary

No! This makes me sad. For obvious reasons.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I just hate this. I think it looks like she got angry at her dad’s tuxedo, and then bleached her hair with Margaret O’Hoolihan’s Peroxide. Hate it.

    • PeaceBang

Oh, phew! I thought you were cheering Mulligan, and I just couldn’t. She looks fully 65. The shoes hurt me, too. But yes, great design.
