Yay or Nay: Christian Dior Fall 2013 Bags

Posted on March 04, 2013

Enough with these vapid celebrities and their ill-advised outfits, kittens. Let’s all get a cuppa whatever we need at the moment, sit down in the break room, and talk purses.

Don’t even try to tell us you don’t want to.

It seems almost silly to put the following bags up to a vote. We’re sure there will be some dissent, but looking at these bags, with their feminine, whimsical, very mid-Century Warhol illustrations, the question in our minds isn’t so much “YEA or NAY?” but “Which one do you want, darling?”

Adorable (said in French)!

But hey, maybe one or two of you is cranky and hates whimsy. And Warhol. And freedom.

Dior’s Warhol bags: YEA or NAY?

But really: which one do you want, darling?

  • MilaXX

Definitely a YEA! for me. I want the first one and maybe that last one for the summer.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

The white with blue butterflies for me, please.

    • Rrroza

      Me too!

    •  Totally!

    • gabbilevy

       Gorge. My favorite.

    • Qitkat

That’s the only I like. And i’m not a shoe person. Worn with a classic 40s era white suit with tiny blue piping, and a simple pair of black heels. And a medium brimmed light yellow straw hat, with a navy ribbon.

      • bitchiecupcake

        Sounds like a darling ensemble

        • Qitkat

My inspiration was my mom, who might have worn something similar in the 40s, when she married my dad, near the end of the war, in a suit, not a wedding gown. He, being a Lieutenant, wore his Navy dress whites. One of my favorite black and white family photographs.

  • I want the pink one!!

    • LJCdoc

      Me too!

  • And the shoes are mostly the designs of Roger Vivier, who did shoes for Dior back in the day. Or they are meant to refer to his work. Emphatic YEA!

    • Nelliebelle1197

I love them and I want the shoes and the bags.

    • Jackie4g

In 2010, I attended an exhibit of Haute Couture dating from 1947 to 1957. I came around a corner and there was a case of Roger Vivier shoes and I literally lost my breath. Amazing beauty and craftsmanship so much so that I had a visceral reaction. I have notecards with RV shoes on them, and I have to think that’s the closest I’ll get!

      • You rarely even see them show up at auctions of vintage wear, or on websites that sell such things.  Women keep them close to their hearts, it seems.

        • Jackie4g

You could buy them in this country at Saks Fifth Avenue back in the day or the Delman Salon at Bergdorf Goodman in NYC. It was possible to buy a dress or ensemble and have a pair of Roger Vivier shoes to match it. No one would ever want to part with them, no matter how the styles changed, unless they charitably donated them, so I think if they exist, it is within the province of museum shows. That’s OK, they are little works of art.

      • Golfkat

The Golden Age Of Couture from V&A? I saw that exhibit too, in 2009. It was the most incredible thing. So glad I went.

        • Jackie4g

Exactly. I saw it on its only North American stop, in Nashville, TN.  Did you see it at the Victoria and Albert?

          • Golfkat

No, I actually saw it in Australia! In a small rural town called Bendigo, about an hour outside of Melbourne. It was the only place – apart from the V&A of course – that was scheduled to show it at the time. The line was crazy long, but it was definitely worth the wait 🙂 I was blown away.

          • Jackie4g

Even more cool! Are you in Australia now? Of course there is no reason why ths blog couldn’t be universal. Anyway, I have heard of Bendigo in a Kerry Greenwood book. Love that author, and loved the exhibit. Think I’ll go and dig out the book and enjoy it all again.

  • ill have the one with the hospital-green butterflies, and the one with the little bow, thankyou.

  • I love Warhol. And clutches. So I’m fully in. That 3rd one from the top>>>>

    • decormaven

Oh yes! That is a wonderful bag.

    •  Ditto. They’re so fantastically fun looking!

  • Eh I’ve never been a fan of Warhol’s shoe prints for some reason. Is there a Campbell Soup Can shaped clutch, or a handbag with a pink cow on it?

    • cheesebomb

I would rock a pink cow purse.

    • fursa_saida

Yeah, I’d be happier with almost anything else he did. There are many flavors of whimsy, and this one is cutesy whimsy, which…no thanks, personally.

      • suzq

        Yeah, what they said!

Meh, for me, too.  I prefer his bolder designs.

  • Sobaika

I’ll have one of each, thanks for picking up the tab!

  • Love the idea, but I wish they had a Warhol illustration of something other than a shoe. Bah.

    • kimmeister

Same here.  All my friends know I love shoes (I have more than 200 pairs!), and for a while, they kept on buying me things with pictures of shoes on them.  I’d rather have actual shoes, rather than shoe-themed paraphernalia.

  • annrr

    White with butterflies for me.

  • QuincyTKatz

    Yea, and Yeah!

  • Kim O’Neill

In the early 80s I worked at Neusteters department store in Denver. I was friendly with Warren, who worked in the fur salon, which was next to the shoe department, which prominently featured several Warhol shoe illustrations on its walls—originals. So it was always worth going upstairs to try on a few fur coats and gawk at the Warhols.

  • Introspective

i’ll take the last white clutch with a side of fries and my mortgage payment thanks… since we are all engaging in pipe dreams here.

    loving the collection.

  • rag254

Nay.  I’m mostly thinking of how chintzy this is going to look as it gets translated into more downmarket clothing.

    • ceceliadid

To me they already look like Christian Dior for Target, especially the white.

  • I love the shapes of the bags, but the whimsy just reminds me too much of the Audrey Hepburn photo-with-diamonte-accents bags we were all carrying about 10 years ago.

  • YayaGurl

I’m less underwhelmed by the clutches and find those big dumb letters on the handle tack-ay.

  • another_laura

I’ll have the black on black.  Because I like to discover whimsy, not have it transmitted from 50 yards away.

    • Derek_anny

I think the beige with periwinkle shoe would be wonderful rendered black on black.  Mostly because I really like that particular shoe-image.

  • Deb Oswald

    OH YEA!!!!  Pink please!

  • DTLAFamilies

Too twee. Picture Zooey Deschanel carrying this with shoes to match the bag illustration.

    • Imasewsure

Please NO!! Of course it might lead to a tweeplosion so maybe it would be worth it… hmmmm

  • Black.  And white with butterflies.

  • schadenfreudelicious

    Mais oui!

  • christinewithanx

Those shoe drawings are really early Warhol, late 50s, if I’m remembering correctly. I like the gold and black, 3rd down. If you’re ever in Pittsburgh, the Andy Warhol museum is one of the best there is. It’s very cleverly laid out.

    • Winter_White

The Warhol museum’s Silver Cloud room:  I once saw a group of expensively-dressed, elaborately-coiffed older ladies in there having a pillow fight and shrieking with laughter.  Andy would’ve loved it.

  • CeeQ

Hmmm….I’m not like LOVING these but they are cute. That last white one with the black shoe is decent.

(is that white? or pink? or beige? my eyes are shot and I can’t figure out the colour…)

  • CheriCPat

I am all of those things you mentioned.  And believe only a middle school fashionista would look anything but silly carrying one of those.

  • YEA!! I’ll take the first or the last one, thankyouverymuch. Or any in between.

  • StellaZafella

YAY!  but not for me, personally. This is not my taste, but I immediately thought of 3 or 4 friends who HAVE to have these.

I can hear one in particular saying to herself: “Next, how to bump off “the millionaire”?” (Her husband recently declared a period of austerity in the household and collected all of the Neimann’s and Saks cards…thank god, for his sake, he didn’t touch her check books.)

  • jmorino08

I call dibs on the butterfly one!

  • I’d go NAY. Just because I hate the  idea of a woman’s purse being that prosaic. I mean geez, would you wear shoes with purses on them? Just kinda cheezy and obvious.

  • nope, not a fan. it looks like something a cheesy girlfriend would buy for a gal pal who ya know just loves shoes. ick.

    • anotherkate

Agreed. These are obviously made of quality materials, etc. etc., but I can’t help thinking that I’ve seen a bedazzled version of this at Claire’s.

It’s weird because I actually DO like whimsy, and I would love a print of these shoe sketches to put on a wall, but for whatever reason I’m finding it too cutesy on a bag. Then again, Dior has always been a bit more ladylike than I prefer in my personal style.

  • Bag six, please!

  • Tatiana Luján

Love the illustrations, but not the shape of the bags, they look cheap.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

I hate to go on record as an enemy of whimsy (I’m not, really I’m not), but I’m not liking these bags.  And it doesn’t have much to do with the Warhol shoes although they were never my favorites.  I don’t like the design of the bags themselves….they look kind of clunky and uncomfortable to carry.  The clutches are too big and the handles on the other bags are too small and/or too fat to hang onto.

  • MzzPants

     #5, please.

  • Pannyx

Nay, maybe my nieces would like them. Other than that, don’t know anyone who would want one.

  • Carrieanno

Not into whimsy when it comes to my handbags.

  • Little_Olive

Love the illustrations and how they’ve been applied onto the bags.

Do not love the bags themselves, though. I know they had to be basic in order to showcase the pictures but they look too “old lady” for me.

  • Imasewsure

Don’t like the clutches but those handled bags are Barbie-adorable! The black one is almost sort of practical so I’ll take that one please

  • Meh. I don’t like the concept or the execution. I love Warhol’s artwork but why on a bag?

  • appliquer

    Opposite day continues . . .

  • Those scream Regretsy to me.

  • KayEmWhy

    I’d rather have Hushpuppy’s bags.

    • Girl_With_a_Pearl

I saw a woman, I’m guessing 60ish carrying a puppy purse at the theater the other day.  Puppy purses are a trend I can get behind.

  • SewingSiren

If they are free I’ll take #6 , if I’m paying I’ll wait for the Target version.

  • SheWhoMustBeObeyed

The last one is mine. And I will cut a bitch who tries to take it from me.

  • tereliz

I want the white one with the gold shoe, but in black! Love the shape of the purple spectator on that clutch too.

  • Alyssa

Yea! I want the first & fourth ones please!

  • BrooklynBomber

Nay, because they feel very been-there-done-that. And while they don’t look chip in a chip way, they do, as Nina says, “look inexpensive” — at least in the pictures (perhaps not in person). And while I’m all for whimsy, I immediately thought of Fred Flare, which is not good if you’re looking at Dior.

  • JanieS

Meh. I don’t like accessories decorated with other accessories. (Also I don’t really care about shoes.) (Also I’m a monster in human form.)

  • lalahartma

Sorry, they are definitely a nay for me.

  • sablehunter

I would get those so dirty

  • the last one for me please.

  • marilyn

Nay.  It is in a style my now deceased grandmother would have loved.  This style was considered Holly Golightly throw away stuff in the early 60’s.  It is expensive, but does not look it.  Doesn’t anyone at Givenchy have any new ideas?

  • Janet B

I’ll take the ‘subtle’ black on black bag please.

  • Sara__B

If I were loaded with money, I might buy a silly, twee, whimsical, wildly expensive purse I would hardly ever use. IN, but not for me.

  • Thanks but no thanks. Can exchange for a Chanel?

  • Indigo54

I’ll take #5.  No wait, make that #4.  Ok, wait a minute.  Need to be sure.  Gimme #1.  I can carry that one all year ’round.  Well, actually I think I’ll go with #6 cuz I don’t already have a pink bag.  But then, my white clutch is just about kaput so I’d better go with #2.   On the other hand, you should always follow your first instinct so I’ll just take one of each.

    • Indigo54

Oops!  Forgot to say thanks.  THANKS!

  • I am quite happy.  I LOVE whimsy, like Warhol, and greatly appreciate the freedom NOT to desire to carry any of the above bags.

  • rissa42210

I can’t believe I am a dissenter!  I don’t like them at all.  I want a grown-up purse.  These all look like they belong at a celeb’s child’s tea party.

  • ringthing

I’ll take the blush pink satchel, please. These are full of yes.

  •  shoe obsession? everything is turned into a shoe box. they should have painted a shoe on each model’s  forehead as well.

  • Monabel

    You can have my share.

  • crash1212

YEA. The first one and the last one, please.

  • GorgeousThings

Yea! Yea Yea Yea Yea Yea!!!!

  • H2olovngrl

Too cute! Love the first one.

  • MarissaLG

That’s a big NAY for me. The illustrations and hardware on the bags make them look so cheap and tacky. Looks like something you’d find at the Christmas Tree Shop. It’s lovely that they are paying homage to a legendary shoe designer, but this just doesn’t work for me.

  • The last one cause it reminds me of my ballet clothes tote from when i was about five yrs old, and the next to last…

  • fursa_saida

Siiigh. I don’t hate whimsy or Warhol OR freedom, but these bags hold no attraction to me. They’re cutesy, is my problem.

  • TieDye64

I’ll take the first and last, please.

  • Vanja

Nay, it’s not the type of illustration I like.

  • Well, if you insist, I’ll have the pink one.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

Yea.  Can I have the butterflies one but with handle?  Sorry – never satisfied…

  • l_c_ann

  • Oh fuck. We’re back to putting images on bags.  Can’t wait for the Starry Night covered in sequins to come back out.

  • I’m not a fan, BUT-the white clutch the the sketched on shoe is pretty cute.

  • mmc2315

Nay.  I’m cranky about the purses AND the high heels.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I ADORE whimsical purses! But I do not adore these. The exception is the white small satchel with the yellow jeweled Warhol shoe. It’s lovely and wearable. I find the rest of them too minimalist and bland.

  • procrastinatrice

I am gonna have to go with NAY. Images of shoes on bags are not my thing. I kinda hope they disappear.

  • Just wanted to add, that while I requested the pink bag, I would never actually carry this purse, it’s just pretty to look at on my shelf with my other bags but I think it would look pretty silly with almost any outfit  except possibly my Easter dress from when I was 5.

  • f_yeah_marie

YAY and I want them all!

  • Uh….ALL OF THEM!  There, easy peasy.

  • Yea. I want ALL of them.

  • OrigamiRose

YEA. I would like number one, because it both indulges the whimsy of the collection without being impossible to pair it with anything by being overly whimsical.  *eyes closet full of little black sheaths that will complement it*

The rest are nice to admire but I think that’s all I could do with them.

  • I’ll take the pink handbag – and then pull the pink 3/4 sleeve fake fur coat out of my closet.

  • I love Warhol, but nay. Big NAY.

  • trisker

  • mjude

YEA. i would love the 1st one, black on black & for fun the white purse with blue flower shoe.  love them all.

  • CatherineRhodes

    Can I have them all?

  • All of them, of course – but I’d settle for #1, 4 & 5.

  • ankali

They’re awfully twee, and as such I don’t see them working well for women over 25.

  • On the surface, I SHOULD love these as I’m a huge Warhol fan, and the styles of the purses are lovely . However, all I can think of is those cutesy little country stores that carry purses with shoes on them. Sorry, nay.

    • meowing

Sadly, I agree.  Cutesy for the sake of cutesy.  But then, I’m an old hag, and I’m likely to yell at you to get off my lawn, so I’m not the demographic for these.  I’ll take a classic, high quality leather plain-ish bag any day.

  • ojosazules

I’m nayish on these, but I do love the last one.

  • Depends. Are the Warhol illustrations of Dior shoes? If so, the bags are too self-referencial  to be in good taste. If not, I’m OK with them and might want the 1st one (tone-on-tone black.)

  • MsALVA

YEA times a million. I want all of them.

  • librarygrrl64

    YEA, especially the clutches. Cute!

  • alyce1213

No reason why accessories can’t be fun, if you can afford it.
    These are fun.

  • Monday1900

Sorry, I think they look like swag you’d get at the Barbie convention.  Don’t like any of them.

  • valerie saenz

    Looks like Target.

    • golden_valley

I was gonna say Walmart.  The little Oscar nominee girl’s doggie bag is the child’s version of the bags in these photos.

    • mhleta

It’s my Barbie lunch box from 1967 all over again.

      • Beverly Kozma

They totally remind me of a light blue vinyl lunch box I had around, say, 1961.  It was the first thing I thought when I saw the cover photo of the pink purse.

    • Exactly. My first thought was “cheap”. My first purse in middle school was from Target and looked very similar.

  • RescueMe23

I’ll dissent.. not digging the shoe theme.  I like the shapes & colors though…does that count?

  • Claudia Fernandes

    not nay, but no

  • Judy_J

Big ol’ YEA!  I had the Andy Warhol shoe calendar a couple of years ago.  Love it.

  • lrhoff

None of them….I’m all about whimsy but they just don’t grab me.

  • Nay. The blue and white one is ok, but the rest of them are just…not my thing. I think it has to do with how pointy the shoes look. It’s cartoony and pulls them into juvenile for me.

YELLOW ON WHITE!!!! sorry for screaming–I just love them that much!

  • carolynmo

#4, please. Oh, the heck with it! All of them!

  • Yea all the way for me – super cute!!

  • mhleta

I regret that I must report that the Committee has decided, after careful consideration, that they ought to say “Nay” to these silly purses. What next? Shoes with hats on them?

    • j_anson

Hahahah, now picturing shoes with little (3-D) top-hats glued on the bridge of the foot. Kind of want to see that. (Wouldn’t want to WEAR it, though.)

  • it’s just not really my thing. the first one is ok but the rest look too….i can’t even find the word. :-/

  • Bailey Debruynkops

  • Rand Ortega

    Just 1?

  • Lilithcat

Love.  Come on – two of my favorite things – handbags and shoes – how could I not?  If I really can pick only one, it’s the last one.

  • Kate4queen

    Oh my! I love them!!

  • MintaHallWriter

I gotta say, I’m probably the lone NAY in the group. I don’t much care for any of them. But then, I also tend to hate mid-century design wherever it rears its truly ugly head.

These remind me of the cheap-o cartoons from the 1960s that completely lacked the artistry of the cartoons from the 40s and 50s.

    NAY. OUT. AUF. Buh-BYE.

  • sweetlilvoice

Love them! I can’t decide which one I want the most, so surprise me!

  • Sara Brams-Miller

Black clutch with the gold shoe.  Hands down.

  • PeaceBang

The yellow on black would be adorable as a cosmetics case but as a pricey bag? NAY.

  • rumcg66

    Number 5 please. Thank you.

  • kikisayshi

yay. I want the black one!

  • Another one in the NAY category.  Fugly and not at all whimsical IMO.

  • formerlyAnon

    SUPER Yea!

Prefer the clutches, especially the first. If one can afford Dior bags that are only going to get an occasional airing, that is.

  • Corazon Nunez

I can’t decide if it would be funny or annoying if a celebrity matched their shoes to the shoes on the purse. Hmmm… Yup, funny.

    • DarkWillow

I feel like funny and annoying wouldn’t be mutually exclusive in this case.

    • j_anson

      Well, I would definitely laugh.

  • guest2visits

    I will pass. Not that the Warhol shoe sketches aren’t elegant in their own right ( I especially like the cold embossed design);
I would just never tote a bag with a shoe on it. Or a lobster. Or a poodle. Or a kitty-cat. Or a skull (I’ve been tempted – then snapped
back to reality). Or a bunch of fruit. Or chili peppers. Or the outlines of a state…

  • Anniebet

NEIGH! Call me cranky, but those are downright giggle inducing. Whimsy is one thing. This is silly.

  • Zippypie

I love whimsy but these….nay!  The black one is okay because it’s black on black.  It’s too cutey/Etsy for me.

  • DarkWillow

    Nay. I can’t handle cutesy on grown-ups.

  • DominoEstella

Not for the money you have to pay for them.. I want something a little more timeless that won’t scream CD 2013 fall collection.

  • jkatkins

Love them all!  When Dior starts doling them out to the likes of me, I’ll take the pink one.

  • MissAmynae

    Cream and purple, stat!!

  • ThaliaMenninger

I will take them all, please!

  • IamstillAnonymous

    D.) None of the above

  • bags WITH shoes on them?? LOVE!! who could not?

  • info

    I want them all!

  • blondie65

I want to like, but vote nay.  Just too….I don’t know….tween, cutsey, tounge-in-cheek…but nope…would none of these work for me.  Dior has done so many more fabulous bags that I would love to have.  That having been said, the white butterfly shoe in pic 5, as a shoe, I am totally in love with.

  • samo_samo

Yea! They are adorable. I can see they wouldn’t be for everyone, but I would add one or two to my collection if I could afford Dior.

  • I want them all. I’ve always loved his shoe drawings.

  • FridaStaire

Yay! I love the idea of wearing the picture rather than hobbling in the shoe.

  • j_anson

Oh lordy. You (didn’t) have me at Warhol. Nay, nay, a thousand times nay.

  • Cynica

YEA! I’ll take the pale pink handbag and the butterfly clutch, please. They’ll got perfectly with my summer perfume, Diorissimo.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Um pink one because it looks the least obviously like a shoe?

  • Verily a yay for me – and I want the white clutch with the grey shoe.

  • Nay. They look cheap. And not on purpose cheap but just cheap.

  • Nay for the simple fact that I could buy that kind of whimsy on any street market for about ten bucks.

  • S’ok but I’d be tired of them pretty fast

  • Nay.  I hate shoes as design elements anywhere but on feet, I really do.

  • lilibetp

I want the pink one.  Of course.

  • libraangel

Guess I am the one who is cranky and hates whimsy. Freedom I like. I like Warhol – just Not on bags!

  • Melvis Velour

I’m kinda torn on these – on one hand, yes they are quite whimsical and fun but like many here, I think they’d get old and dated rather quickly which makes the obscene price for them not worth it in the end say compared to a Bottega Venetta bag which will still look great years from now.

  • Joyce VG

    I want them all. YEA!

  • Lulu Guiness ripoffs.

  • I want the last one! Pink! Handle! For me!

  • bitchiecupcake

I am sooo in love with these bags. I don’t fall easily, but Dior and
Andy? That just equals *fab-u-louss* (said like you-know-who). I am
adopted auntie to andy’s cousin and i cannot wait to show these to him
for a smile,, but for me, i want to purchase where can i buy? <3 Ps
yes i know that my sentence structure is bad as well as my punctuation,
please forgive, i've just woke. But its not about me, its all about
these adorable very fun bags. I notice not everybody is a warhola fan,
but that'sokay..i like hearing their fav types of bags and shoes too.
Now direct me to the cart please, ha. <3
