WERQ: Teyonah Parris in J. Loren

Posted on March 21, 2013

This GURL is on fire:

Teyonah Parris attends the premiere of AMC’s ‘Mad Men’ Season 6 in Los Angeles, California in a J. Loren dress paired with London Trash sandals and Rocco jewelry.

Before we get to the hosannas, a reminder, in case you don’t recognize the name:

The right style can do amazing things, can it not? Also: makeup is magical.

Okay, back to the present day:

This is absolutely a case of Girl, That is YOUR Look and YOUR look ONLY. We really can’t think of anyone who can pull this look off and on another lady, we might have some quibbles  (like the focus-pulling shoes and mid-calf-hem). But this all comes together so stunningly that all we can do is fall back on what escaped our lips upon first viewing her:

“Wow.”

Love the dress, love the jewelry, love the makeup, and the hair is GIVING US LIFE. But most of all, we love it that she brought great, unique style to the red carpet, while firmly planting her flag away from the cookie-cutter girls. Gurl, you WERQ that “I’M RIGHT HERE, BITCHES” look for all its worth. Clear-the-room SNAPS of DECLARATION.

It is just SO NICE to see someone doing something a little different on the red carpet, no?

face is stunning, dress fits her curves to perfection, and the shoes are killah. hair is a bit much for me but she’s so striking that I cant care about that too much. bitch is fierce and she knows it.

  • Sobaika

    W E R Q

    She is so beautiful!

Don’t really love the hair, but the dress and jewelry and make-up and everything else are amazing! Love it!

  • http://theargiehome.blogspot.com/ Gus Casals

And I have to say, I simply LOVE that she was at the premiere, Dawn is a character that deserves continuity. Only wish they had included her in the promo pics…

  • Susan Collier

    Love it!

  • gabbilevy

150% WERQ. Teyonah Parris just became a household name. In my house anyway. Damn girl.

  • Schmidty

that FACE! She knows she looks incredible.

  • urbanamish

    that’s DAWN?!?

  • MilaXX

YES!!! She caught my eye during the awards show when the natural hair bloggers were asking who did her hair and how. The person who did her hair explained how and I’ve been checking Teyonnah since. This is most definitely a WERQ for me.

    • Lizzyisi

The hairstylist must be aces! I’d love to see a film of the styling session–hairdressing is so interesting to me. Her hair is amazing–it manages to be costumey and ridiculous at the same time that it is stunning, flattering and perfectly in line with the dress.

      • jetpackdino

I’m starting to come around on that hair. The more I look at it the more I say yes.

      • MilaXX

google her. She does amazing AA hair. I’m thinking of attending a workshop she is giving at the Natural Hair show in Philly.

        • nancymae

Do you know if she’s coming to any natural hair shows in the Bay Area?

          • MilaXX

You could check her FB page, I’m not sure.

        • nobodylikesmilhouse

Sorry, misread who you were talking about.

    • http://twitter.com/DarthJaeda Jaeda Laurez

My TL had pics of that fauxhawk in the purple for a solid 48 hours after she walked down the red carpet- gorgeous, gorgeous look.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HNGRR454HLHWUKQGAHA2KJJ7NY TeresaM

She is making me want to grow out my relaxer.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=10910518 Erica Woods Tucker

That is definitely a hot hair look. I would love to put my dreds up in something funky like that.

      • MilaXX

chescalocs on youtube does great tuts

    • nancymae

Thanks for the hairstylist info. Which blog interviewed her??

      • MilaXX

        someone asked on twitter

      • MilaXX

correction. Afrobella sis a post after the SAG awards and got the breakdown on how the style was done.

    • libraangel

I like Solange’s TRUE natural hair

      • MilaXX

Solange wear wigs half the time and this is all Teyonnah’s hair.

        • libraangel

don’t think so: that’s Solange’s beautiful, natural Fro!

          • MilaXX

not every picture, and she admits to wearing wigs, but whatever boo.

  • Missy Covington

Wow! They somehow manage to age her by at least 10 years on the show.

I personally could have done with a few inches off the hem, but she looks fabulous.

    • AnaRoW

Really? I think she looks younger on the show.

      • Missy Covington

Maybe the lack of makeup? I dunno, I think the hair and outfit is aging and the lack of eye-makeup pushes her toward middle-ageish on the show.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

    She is utterly radiant!!!!!

  • ashtangajunkie

WOW! I love the entire look, but that hair is amazing.

  • CPK1

love it! She looks fab. Her make-up is beautiful. Unlike the sandblasting effect we have seen on other redcarpet attendees

  • Apocalipstick Now Redux

That’s a giant hair covered football glued to her head.

    • Apocalipstick Now Redux

Replying to myself because I realized it’s almost Easter. It’s not a football, it’s an oversized Cadbury egg.

      • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I don’t understand why people “vote down” a comment. It sortof does look like a football and usually I don’t like that look but for some reason, I feel it works on her in this particular setting.

        • roadtrip1000

I don’t understand it either. I really wish that the “vote down” feature didn’t exist. If someone agrees with a statement it doesn’t really need an explanation. But if someone disagrees then a written response would make more sense and add to the conversation. One of the many things that I love about this blog is that the BKs’ responses generally convey a friendly conversational tone even when disagreeing. The “vote down” button represents the opposite at worst and contributes little at best. IMHO

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Now *that* is a way to get yourself Googled. Because there are going to be a whole lot of people going “Wow! Who is this stunning woman?”

Well played, lesser known, up and coming actress, well played.

    • aeb1986

i never realized how STUNNING she is!! wow is right! WERQ

  • Monday1900

She looks great but I think this almost looks like a costume. The hairdo is very strange too.

  • jetpackdino

I am undecided on the hair and nails, but that’s her dress.

Her smile is amazing! She’s looking through the camera and brightening up my day.

  • http://twitter.com/lenabena_ Elena

Wow, did not recognize her at all! That dress is pretty killer.

  • Janet B

Her smile seals the deal. Gorgeous.

  • Kyle Crawford

    A top 10 WERQ ever!

    • Kyle Crawford

It is sort of amazing that she is so much younger in ” real life “….

  • Alyssa

I agree, it is so nice to see someone doing something different on the carpet! That is a very “Look At Me” look, and she is owning it!

  • Jennifer Coleman

    Abso-friggin-lutely!
    That is all.

  • Qitkat

Well, you can say it’s hair; I say it’s halfway to Buckingham Palace Royal Guard.

    • Qitkat

      But it’s still a werq ;-)

  • RebeccaKW

Sheer side panels that I actually like? She’s beautiful.

  • Indigo54

She’s da bomb! Love, love, love all of it!

  • Le_Sigh

    WOW! Killa killa killa!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

WOW. Gorgeous. (eh hem JJ, THIS is how you make sure people don’t confuse you with your character without being cracktastic about it)

    • sojourneryouth

Thank you! Teyonah clearly knows how to work her unique beauty, and has a hair stylist who must be paid in small platinum disks. Seriously, that woman is a genius! January doesn’t seem to know what looks best on her, ever.

  • mellbell

The pattern reminds me of the carpet you would see in the lobby of a five-star hotel (and I mean that in the best possible way).

  • Anniebet

Everything but the hair. Sorry, but that hair needs it’s own zip code…or a taxidermist.

    • MK03

From head-on, it kind of looks like a, erm…Weiner.

  • miagain

You left out the best part… that mega watt smile!! She knows she looks like a million bucks!!

    • surfergirl70

Seriously — that smile is incredible.

  • anotherkate

She looks amazing. And thanks for the screen shots–when I first clicked over I was wondering if she’s a new character they’re introducing, that’s how different she looks! I LOVE the beehive, and she’s making that dress her bitch. Also I love her toenail color.

  • carolynmo

Jaw-dropping gorgeous. This is utter perfection. Man, I want that dress.

  • http://twitter.com/UBreyn Ursula Reynolds

Wow! She snatched off everyone’s wig on the red carpet with this look. Do it Girl! Luvs.

  • filmcricket

What a stunning young woman. She’s lucky in that she is somewhat apple-cheeked, yet that mega-watt smile doesn’t make her eyes disappear.

I’m not totally sold on the length of the dress, but otherwise this is beyond spectacular.

  • Anathema_Device

Love how happy she looks. That dress could have one element too many for most women, but she rocks it. Not a total fan of hair hats, but it does add that quirkiness to the look.

  • AnaRoW

I love the overall look but, weirdly, not the individual parts. Even though I’m not crazy about the style, I LOVE her hair. It was my goal to have hair like hers when I went natural but I never got anywhere close.

  • http://twitter.com/DarthJaeda Jaeda Laurez

I love it when black women in the industry show how awesome and creative (and architectural) natural hair can be. Certainly a welcome and refreshing change from the messy “bun/pony/updo” trend that, as far as I’m concerned, can go far FAR away.

Her dress, her hair, her makeup, even the shoes- just BRING IT.

    • JasmineAM

Ah, I’m black but with curly/wavy hair and I am jealous of girls with kinkier hair. So much more versatile, in my opinion at least.

  • Erica_Vuitton

WOW I can’t really believe that’s the same woman, she looks completely different! Dress for me is an 8 (the print is off center and the leather ric rac at the top is one embellishment too many) but the overall look is “Yeah you know you’re looking at me” without trying to be attention getting. Hope to see more RC looks from her!!

  • Wendi126

Everything is gorgeous but I must say the very first pic caused my brain to see Marge Simpson

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

    I. WANT! Her. Eyebrows.

She looks fantastic and while I’m not normally a fan of a hairdo wherein at first glance I can’t decide if it’s a hairdo or a fascinator perched on her head, in this case it works. Kudos for absolutely following the injunction of Polonius: This above all, to thine own self be true.

Now tell me what we can expect from Mad Men this coming season. Thanks! PS: the nail color is perfect, too.

  • SewingSiren

Love every single little bit of this. Especially the hair. IN. WERQ.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Normally, I do NOT like those sandals. On her, they are perfect. Normally, I would hate the “Cake of Hair on the Head” hairstyle. On her – it looks like she invented it. The design of the dress, the makeup, her skin tone, her smile, it all just works and works well. And look at her sweet face. You can tell she feels so beautiful. Good for her!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

      Without exception, this.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

Doesn’t even look like the same person! Wow! WERQ!

  • Iris

Loved everything about her… except the hair.

  • Christiane Truelove

I love this look, I really do. But I’d be so much happier with it if the front panel of the dress were actually centered. With a dress as expensive as you know that one must be, sloppy execution is a CRIME.

    • susan6

I’m pretty sure the asymmetry is deliberate. And kudos to the hairdresser for giving that asymmetry a nod. (I assume the hairdresser knew what dress was being worn and designed a style to complement it.)

      • barbarienne

Really? It doesn’t look at all deliberate to me. Everything is too close to properly centered, except the front panel. It’s killing me.

  • http://twitter.com/CaitrinofFenris Caitrin

Very stunning and it is nice to see something unexpected so you can you use different adjectives other than “nice” or “boring”. I do find the hair completely distracting from the dress as it looks like a very large mole that needs to be removed, but other than that.. very, very awesome.

  • VicksieDo

    I hate that dress. Upholstery!

  • sylverlight

That dress is killer, her smile & makeup flawless, and I’m actually coveting those shoes (but to wear w/ jeans…). That said, I HATE THAT HAIR with a burning, flaming passion. Truly. Despise it.

  • teensmom99

Wow. And a minor point but when you look at the Mad Men photos you can see how some styles are aging–she looks around 15 years younger than her character.

    • roadtrip1000

Plus the character of Dawn dresses to conform and blend in, while Teyonah is dressing to wow. It’s the sartorial expression of the difference between suppressing ones feelings and experiencing joy, which speaks to the power of clothes.

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

Gorgeous. This is just so perfect. Snaps up. On anyone else this would be too much but on her, it freaking SINGs. I can’t even find the right words to explain how much I love this, except – WERQ.

(Also, I wish Janelle Monae would dress like this. I know she had a very personal purpose in her uniform, but this look – down to the hair – hearkens to Monae’s style.)

Also – I hope this means we’ll see more of Dawn this season. She had a presence not unlike Megan’s when Megan was a secretary, but with more strength and maturity behind it.

  • http://twitter.com/irmaladuce_l8ly IrmaLaDuce

Love that big smile! Like she KNOWS she’s working it!

  • Rand Ortega

JESUS PALOMINO! This has to be 1 of the best RC looks EVER! It’s original, elegant, sexy, funky & fun. The Janelle Monae hair is giving me life, love, liberty & the pursuit of happiness. Her stylists should be awarded Medals of Valor. Can’t wait to see what this young lady’s next fashion move will be.

    • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

Miss Teyonah tweeted her thanks to us this morning and mentioned the names of her styling team. Go send them some love – and tell them T Lo sent you.

      https://twitter.com/TeyonahParris/status/314757300910972929

      • Rand Ortega

I most certainly will, TLo. Thanks for the heads up!
(I do declare, sirs. I’m getting so much info from your wonderful site.)

  • julnyes

This is a case that all the elements separately might not work, but brought together on the right woman they become a WERQ. She looks amazing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=49702581 Susan Bullard Mayer

The asymmetry of the print is driving me crazy. I hate that! But she is totally owning that look! WERQ indeed!

    • Anniebet

Dang, I hadn’t noticed. Now I cannot unsee.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=2066192 Melissa Mellon

    Awesome!

  • Zaftiguana

Way to seize her fucking moment! She looks amazing, and I hope people are sitting up and paying attention. One of my biggest hopes for this season is that they really do something with Dawn.

  • Snailstsichr

The only part of this outfit I could get away with is the nail polish color, so I’m totally stealing it this weekend. The rest of the look is best left to professionals – and I believe Teyonah has nailed it!

  • marilyn

She looks great! The dress is interesting. The print on the front should make it difficult for a curvy girl to wear, but the black strips ‘fill in the blanks’ and make it work. Kudos on the dress. I am not sure about the crooked hair, but it is a small thing.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/37TPKASIMXVUPYK5BNQFOL43KU Carina

Wow, she looks fantastic! Way to get noticed! Go girl.

  • Nicholas

Did anyone here not snap their fingers at this?

  • librarygrrl64

The definition of fierce. LOVE IT!!!

  • formerlyAnon

This is a WERQ+ if such a thing exists.

Her hair is inspired – it actually improves the dress (which didn’t need improving), and that’s something so rare on the red carpet, or anywhere. Props to her hairdresser and double props to her for wearing a hairstyle a little bolder than the norm.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

I can’t quite get on board with those shoes, but the rest is amazing! And I love her pedi – that’s a pretty color for Spring.

  • Imasewsure

Don’t like the hair but I respect it. Fun when you can transform on the RC too.. WERQ

  • EEKstl

LOVE LOVE LOVE! And loving that “tangerine” is in for Spring for nails. I have nothing but snaps for her.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000905542323 Rhonda Shore

Miss Teyona Parris has the quintessential it. This is phenomenal, really. As close to perfection as we mere mortals get.

  • libraangel

Yes, gorgeous, but can’t get behind you with the nest on her head.

  • Eva_baby

It is so funny because outside of Kiernan Shipka & Elizabeth Moss, so many of the MM ladies have a hard time transitioning from their somewhat iconic 50s/60s looks to something that works equally well for them on the RC for their present day look. But Man, Teyonah flipped the script up-down-backwards and sideways. She disappears as Dawn but this looks is like Fiyah! Love it. One of the best, complete RC looks I’ve seen in a long time, head to toe!

  • MoHub

    Turtle belly!

  • Pterodactyl111

Amazing!! I wish I could do that with my hair.

  • http://dorothydamage.wordpress.com/ Dorothy Damage

Can she be the star of the show? She is my new icon.

  • ConnieBV

Jada, girl, this bitch is coming for you!

    LOVE this.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Patrick-Cleary/1201575213 Patrick Cleary

It’s a fantastic dress, though the pattern looks exactly like the linoleum in my kitchen in 1987.

  • warnerave

the girl is serving some attitude..werq!

  • http://profiles.google.com/melantha.chimera Eileen Duffy

Love most of the look…. hate the hair.

  • CeeQ

oh hell yes, this is gorgeous! head to toe, just FAB.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

There aren’t enough words to say how much I love this. FABULOUS.

  • BaddestMotherEver

    I can’t believe that’s the same person!

  • VioletFem

She is hitting every note perfectly! I love it when AA actresses rock their natural hair. (especially those with kinky/curly hair). More of this please!

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

    GURL!

Fabulous + knowing it = WERQ.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

She does look fabulous. Thanks for the look-back at Dawn so now I don’t have to look that up. What a difference.

  • barbarienne

I admit I am completely distracted by the poor centering of the pattern, causing unintended asymmetry and titscrepancy. That she still manages to look so spectacular is a real testament to her.

  • LaSylphide

That smile is a WERQ on its own.

  • fauxhawk

Hell, she probably looks so much better because she’s actually living in present-day times instead of in our oppressive past. She looks fantastic! What a smile.

  • fws

Absolutely perfect from top to bottom. Just STUNNING.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1208138556 Sara Munoz Munoz

Get the fuck out!! Well done, Dawn!!

  • Mistie Holler

You guys… this is NOT a WERQ.

It’s an uber-WERQ. It’s probably the best look I’ve ever seen on the RC. I hope she wins TLo’s Best Look of 2013 at the end of the year.

It’s lifted me out of the existential pit of melancholy that Jessica Biel’s crocheted pants wearing Victorian missionary look threw me into.

    • Mistie Holler

…and I just want to add that even her nails are perfect.

  • Nonmercisansfacon

Dayum, you go Teyonah! Can’t wait for my fro to be long enough to try this ridiculously awesome natural hairstyle.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ernie-Guzman/1587035573 Ernie Guzman

I’m a gay man, but I must say that her posterior is truly breathtaking. It’s so perfect, it could be used to calibrate scientific equipment.

    MAGNIFICENT!

  • Mazenderan

    Wow – she looks fabulous.

  • oohsparkley!

    Amen! You said it Tlo.

  • PrunellaV

She looks fabulous, but the hair looks a little Gumby.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Not just different but differnt and so well done. WERQ worthy indeed!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=10910518 Erica Woods Tucker

She is GORGEOUS!!!! A great body, and style beyond compare!!! The dress is amazing…LOVE, LOVE LOOOOOVE!

  • nancymae

HER HAIR. I DIE. And pray to god that I can get my TWA to grow to such heights of fierceness.

  • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

“dont know who she is, but she looks great.”

    *scrolling down*

    “WOAH. its dawn!”

seriously, she looks great. she makes sheer side panels look not tacky! (“untacked”?)

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

    FIERCE as HELL.

Also, the only person I’ve seen who pulls off sheer panels without looking tacky or Icecapades.

  • TropiCarla

Whew! So inspiring. You better do the damn thing, gurl!
Sometimes we natural ladies need a little encouragement. This was a helluva shot in the arm!

  • thelovelydove

HOT DAMN. She’s making that crazy honeycomb dress sing!

  • MissAmynae

speechless. i got nothing but nods and snaps.

  • http://twitter.com/TVcastingcall Reality TV Casting

    werkuh werkuh werkuh

  • Iroqhard

This whole look is fabulous, and she MAKES IT with how confident she looks. GOR-GEOUS. I love the hair- being a white girl with stick straight, fine hair, I have to beat it within an inch of its life to get it some damn body. I look with wistful resignation at architechural hair (that is totally not spelled right). Simply stunning. It is one of the best RC looks thus far this year. WERQ it girl!

  • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

Once in a great while, that hem length works perfectly; this is one such occasion.

  • shanteUstay

Darling every woman looks Fabulous with a smile, but hers is down right infectious :D

  • bd73

    flawless

  • kathrineb

    Don’t like the hair.

  • red

yes but “doing something a little different on the red carpet” must be done with aplomb, no? Not just any old crazy, off the wall, ‘look at me, i’m so unique’ type of thang. And I must say, this one is doing it right!
