Vera Farmiga in Valentino on Jay Leno

Posted on March 18, 2013

There’s something rather pretty, in a Stepford Wife kind of way, about this dress.

Vera Farmiga makes an appearance on ‘The Tonight Show With Jay Leno’ in a Valentino Guipure lace dress.

Valentino Resort 2013 Collection

But it is a TERRIBLE choice for a sit-down interview on TV. For one, that’s not a very telegenic color at all; especially on a pale blonde. For another, any visual interest in the dress is delicate and the impact comes from the long line of the skirt, which gets lost in a pile of laundry when she sits down. And it’s bunching up around her waist, which should’ve been a deal-breaker the second she tried it on. But we’re just going to have to wrap our minds around the idea that celebs pick outfits for TV sit-downs and don’t actually try them on and sit down, to see what they’re going to look like.

It’s a pretty dress, but this is one of those rare occasions when a resort collection piece actually does look like it belongs on a resort somewhere. Sweetie, slap on some sandals and go for a walk on a clear white beach with topaz-blue water wearing this dress, but don’t sit on Jay Leno’s set wearing it.

I love that color. I mean, in theory. Clearly not here in practice.

Serving Laura Ingalls on a resort realness.

    • charlotte

      Look, she brought her blanket!

    • Anathema_Device

So many women go too short on their sit-downs, and she erred on the side of far too much fabric.

    • Colleen Byrne

Forget Vera, what did you think of Craig Ferguson?

    • sablehunter

      She’s missing a daisy crown

      • BuffaloBarbara

That so would have made it worth it. In an “I must laugh at the hippie realness” way, but still, worth it.

      • 3boysful

Perfect! This is, as pointed out, a great walk-on-the-beach dress. Although I have an irrational aversion to things with 12 inch ruffles on the bottom. Perhaps because we had a lot of that look in the 70s, and it always looks dated to me.

        • Indigo54

OMG, I hate that stupid ruffle too. Just wanna rip it off and stomp on it.

        • Cathy S

Yes, great beach dress (although I doubt I could afford it). I like the ruffle though.

      • rococodada

omg you read my mind! I was thinking she needed to crimp her hair, too

    • redwaggin

Stepford Wife? Don’t you mean Sister Wife?

        my thoughts exactly

    • Guest

more like a sister-wife than a stepford wife, no?

      • jmorino08

        Yes. That. Awful!!

However! Michelle Obama could rock the shit out of this at the White House Easter Egg Roll!!

    • http://opinionandamovie.blogspot.com/ Deitra S.

Mainly I’m mesmerized by her dyed-to-match microphone.

      • zenobar

I noticed the same thing…do you think they have a tackle box full of different-colored windscreens for this kind of thing?

        • http://opinionandamovie.blogspot.com/ Deitra S.

Ha! I was imagining some sort of Home Depot-esque color matching system and a little paint sprayer.

    • Sobaika

I don’t see Stepford, more like rich bohemian.

      • Jecca2244

Agreed. I feel like Stepford wife looks have more structure.

    • zenobar

That fabric looks like the stuff they made ClingFree dryer sheets from, back in the 70s…only thicker and stiffer.

    • Lizzyisi

I’d hate to have to pick something for one of these talk shows–a nice above-the-knee skirt shows off too much when sitting; pants do weird things when you sit in them (although I doubt most starlets have to worry about pants making their thighs look heavy when they sit in them); long skirts look like lap blankets . . . .

      • MilaXX

I think skater dress silhouettes work well on most. The A line of the skirt means being able to sit without showing the fine china & the top can be accented with nice trim or good jewelry.

    • Rand Ortega

      Frumptastic.

    • l_c_ann

      Grasping at straws.
At least they edited the bottom runway ruffle to be flat.

    • MilaXX

sheesh! between the hair & the dress she looks all kinds of dowdy. Also I caught the sneak peek On Demand and Bates Motel sucks.

    • Little_Olive

      *singing*

How do you solve a problem like Vera?

    • Zippypie

      70s dreck!

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

That’s a horrible color lipstick on her. It’s worse than the dress. And I’m a not a fan of her hairstyle. Also, it’s Stepford Sister Wife.

    • BuffaloBarbara

Why did they do the model up to look shiny like a mannequin? Isn’t a model supposed to be superior to a mannequin? :scratches head:

I agree with everything you guys said in the post. I’d add that her hair looks like she’s actually spent day down at the beach in flip flops, so maybe it was being deployed properly earlier?

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

It seems like an outfit that is very true to who she is. For that I commend her. But, as you said, it is not the dress for sitting and talking on tv.

    • SouthernGirlRena

This dress is the complete opposite of what I think of when I read “in Valentino”. I just can’t quite get my brain wrapped around that.

    • melanie0866

I feel like I say this a lot, but my sister made a dress like this for herself in 1977.

    • beebee10

      right again on EVERYTHING tlo!

    • http://twitter.com/bert_keeter bert keeter

Vera to her stylist, ” I’d like a dress that adds fifty pounds to my figure” Stylist, “I have just the dress!”

    • jetpackdino

My first reaction to this dress is one of frustration. Don’t these actresses actually *want* to look good?

And then I sit back and think, well, maybe her grandma picked it for her.

    • MzzPants

Well, at least she’s not pulling a Hallie.

Mmm, no. Its the ‘good’ tablecloth you get out for a St. Patrick’s Day feast, or when the Irish relatives are coming for dinner.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000905542323 Rhonda Shore

That’s exactly what i thought, tablecloth.

    • VioletFem

This reads more hippy-wife (is that thing?) than step-ford wife.

    • Sweetbetty

I saw that show and when she came walking out I thought she was in a fancier version of the paper dresses from the ’60s. I kept waiting for the conversation to turn to the dress since I felt sure there was some gimmick to it but that never happened.

    • Anniebet

I really like the dress. I’d wear it to Saturday morning Farmer’s Market. Or Whole Foods.

      • Aurumgirl

That is about the only appropriate place for this dress. And even then: on a redhead only.

        • EEKstl

          Or brunette! :-)

    • H2olovngrl

I half expected to scroll back up and see her sitting opposite Johnny Carson circa 1976.

      • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

        YES,

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

Maybe she was trying to give Jay a break after Halle Berry’s boobtastic appearance?

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

OK, so here is the song we all sing when we see this dress. Get out your banjos. “Yew git the banjo, I’ll git the jug, Black out yer tooth, git a corn cob pipe, Uh, huh, (clap clap) uh huh, (clap clap) uh huh (clap clap)” You must be slapping your knee as you sing this.

This dress is just Granny Clampett WRONG.

    • JuliaInBlack

      Girl, that’s not your tablecloth.

      • kathrineb

        lol

    • libraangel

I didn’t know she was filming a re-make of ‘Little House on the Prairie’?

    • kathrineb

‘Pile of laundry’ is right! Bad with her hair-colour, insanely long, a really odd choice.
