Valentino Fall 2013 Collection

Posted on March 07, 2013

With inspiration taken from Delft ceramics and Flemish Old Masters portraiture, the Valentino fall 2013 collection manages the trick of feeling serene and luxurious at the same time. There’s a too-cool-for-school low key, almost simplistic vibe that counteracts nicely with the Old World upscale textures and elements. Straight up pretty and thought provoking at the same time.

Beige suit, third tow left? Stunning. A lot of exceptionally wearable looks here. And a good deal of it could be translated to the lower cost end of market very effectively.

      • A. W.

I’d love to see some of these looks translated into RED Valentino. Until A.W. gets a little further in her career, she can’t afford Grown-Ass Bitch Valentino, but RED is within my price range when I want to spoil myself.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

RED is a great place to start. The rarified environs of couture take training. Lol

      • Winter_White

I noticed that too — reminded me of the jacket Jada Pinkett Smith was wearing in a photo posted about a week ago.  (She was wearing it with drawstring pants with racing stripes, which was…um…but I couldn’t stop staring at the jacket!)  Love the crisp, clean lines here contrasted with the soft, drape-y sleeves.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

It’s ago oriole price of textile architecture.

      • StellaZafella

It all feels a little too demure for my personal taste (as is), however… Am I being sacrilegious in liking the idea of wearing some of the seperates tops and/or coats with my favorite Saturday blue jeans and a pair of killer boots or booties?

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Not in the least, from where I am. Part of what is great about this collection is how easily elements can be pulled and paired with other things.

    • ChiliP

Will Anne Hathaway issue another public apology when she refuses to wear the leather dresses with the lace bibs?

Also, those shoes hurt my soul.

      • kimmeister

The half-putty, half-white socks are super disturbing.  Makes the models look like they have a weird skin disorder on their feet.

    • Alyssa

That first red dres is amazing! I like a lot of this collection, and look forward to seeing it on the carpet & in the magazines (and in my dreams, in my closet!).

      • buffythekid

Totally agree, that first red dress with the square neck is stunning. Also like the blue one, next row on the right, with the wide rounded neckline. I’m seeing Diane Kruger, or Keira Knightley in these.

    • Monabel

      Some more lady-popes and lady-cardinals here…

    • Fordzo

*squeeee!* I love it all.  Except those lace bibs.  Middle dress, last row should be packaged and shipped to Florence Welch.

      • PastryGoddess

See I was thinking the paisley one was hers

        • Fordzo

Maybe if the sleeves were looser?

    • sablehunter

      Sister Mary Catherine Couture

      • Tatiana Luján

If the necklines were different, I would be inlove with this whole collection.

    • http://www.facebook.com/aboutelle Ashleigh Boutelle

      It’s Wednesday Adams’ full wardrobe

      • http://www.facebook.com/alegalletto Alessandra Galletto

        My exact thoughts!

      • http://www.facebook.com/conysoledad Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

I was thinking exactly the same thing… and then I came looking for the comments, I just KNEW I couldn’t be the only one thinking that.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1452430239 Roxanne Pedro

That is exactly what I thought, too!

    • http://twitter.com/FlaviaGPantoja Flavia Pantoja

I can see that it is a lovely collection but all those ‘peter pan’ collars really bother me. They seem to cheapen everything. Take them away and I love everything.

    • Qitkat

      Row 9: Flow Blue china!

    • PastryGoddess

I feel the need to bow my head reverently after looking at this collection

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

some i adore, some not so much.  i would lose all the peter pan collars, to start with, but that’s just me.  second row right i love, and all that have that multicolor floral embellishment.  fifth row left, the cardinal’s favorite nun.  liking “the borgia’s” vibe.  ditch the seventh row all together, belongs in another collection, if anywhere.

i’m sure the house of valentino is waiting for my opinion with bated breath.  not.

      • http://twitter.com/FlaviaGPantoja Flavia Pantoja

I have the same feeling about the peter pan collars. It seems to me they cheapen the dresses!

      • Tatiana Luján

I would lose all the peter pan collars too.
I too love the right dress on the second row.
The dresses in the seventh row are quite ugly, like kindergarden props.

      • amaranth16

LOVED fifth row left.  Want to see Hilary Swank in it. Or G-Pal.

    • hughman

Naturally, they should all be wearing one pearl earring.

    • Tatiana Luján

      Love the red dresses.

    • mjude

i also love the red dresses

    • Eclectic Mayhem

Excuse me, I’ve come over all Girl with a Pearl Earring…  those red dresses!  My jaw hit the floor.

    • PeaceBang

So exquiz. I’m ignoring the shoes with the little bitty socklets because they’re not worthy. That first dress is bite-your-fist desirable. I hate the leather dresses with the ugly lace bibs and row 7′s bric-a-brac and I’m with the other BKs on not feeling the peter pan collars. The first red dress and the long blue lace gown with the collar are beautiful. My favorite has to be the Delft-inspired row 9. Please lady stars, wear all of these!!

    • MilaXX

These are nice, but with the styling and those colors in the first few rows, this collection looks inspired by Wednesday Adams.

    • MissAmynae

I’d love to see Rooney Mara in the long blue with the wide oval neckline.

    • kimmeister

There are a few unfortunate nipple darts.  The heavy blue strapless jumpsuit looks like wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen.

The first row makes me think that the Brady girls are going to Catholic school.

      • Derek_anny

Strapless jumpsuit, thank you.  All I could put together as a label was “tit-waisted pants.”  I think they’re awesome.  I’m with everyone else about the red selections, and the collection as a whole minus the scalloped weirdnesses.

    • Imasewsure

Ship all the short dresses (and some of the long ones) over to Hailee Steinfeld…. totally her wheelhouse…

    • Louise Bryan

The red gowns are gorgeous.  I’m not sure I would want to dress in the same shapes and collars I did when I was in elementary school, though.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I love it, but I’m getting a decidedly “Wednesday Addams embraces color” feel from the styling.

    • http://www.facebook.com/alegalletto Alessandra Galletto

I’m sorry, but with the hair, all i can think is “Wednesday Adams haute couture”

    • http://twitter.com/KathrynTewson Kathryn Tewson

Some of these I love. Some of them have kind of a Hester Prynne vibe.  Amazingly, the intersection of those two groups is not the null set.  I love the first red one, and it’s VERY Hestery.

    • Zippypie

The row of red is stunning.  The rest look beautifully made, but the palette is incredibly dull.

    • Pants_are_a_must

Half-Cersei Lannister, half-Catholic schoolgirl, and all the above-the-necks look like Vermeer ladies. I don’t know if this is provoking, so much as gently, modestly prodding. And he sure seems fond of those floor length sheer dresses, doesn’t he.

    • bertkeeter

It’s time that the two designers for VALENTINO to inject a little adult glamour and sex appeal into their collections. This girly baby doll stuff is cute but enough already…how about some of the legendary VALENTINO chic?

    • Kathy_Marlow

Why do I see Hailee Steinfeld in any of the shorter looks?

    • Synnamin

Ok, did EVERYONE decide to take inspiration from old paintings this season? Don’t get me wrong, the collections are all gorgeous and different, but it’s starting to feel like all of the big couturiers have a pow-wow and decide to do their own version of a Project Runway challenge.

    • libraangel

Some of the looks are ‘Get thee to a nunnery’ or at least to a Catholic school

    • http://twitter.com/delysia_lafosse Delysia LaFosse

This is going to be ALL OVER the red carpet… unlike many of my other favorite collections this season, this is stunning AND completely wearable. The Dutch masters inspiration is obvious, and I’m loving the colors and all the details by the models’ faces.

    • Jordan Brodley

Somebody please call Fan Bingbing, STAT!

    • Anniebet

Some pretty clothes there, but none that I’m panting over. BUT some of the models are frighteningly thin. Second row right… holy cow, how can she stand up on those matchstick legs. Europe could use the equivalent of the CFDA Health Initiative. Or if they have one, enforce it.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/3DRRZR36XZSTQSLON4LXERKRHA Stephanie

I think the collection is pretty, but I agree with you about the models.  Their legs seems to tiny in the thigh region that they start to look knock-kneed.  I just hope they are healthy.  They are pretty girls.

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

Body-snarking is not allowed here and will get you banned if you make a habit of it.

    • butter nut

omg i love this collection.  just wow.

    • Kyle Crawford

      anyone else getting a ” Handmaid’s Tale ” vibe ?

    • lizajane1776

      So much beautiful!

    • lrober03

Loving the necklines they’re using, and I actually don’t mind the cutouts because they stay classy

    • kathrineb

      So many droll-worthy things.

    • sk8tfan

Some of these are fabulous. But what is it with the schoolgirl shoes and collars? Did the designers suffer through Catholic school in their misbeggoten childhoods and are now working out their emotional issues over nuns or something? It infantilizes otherwise sophisticated looks.

    • http://www.facebook.com/CameronETurner Cameron Turner

The collection is beautiful!  Truly amazing…..

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I’m not loving that one random trio of dresses with the scalloped edges but the rest? GORGE. The reds, the blues, the prints… all BEAUTIFUL.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=535548244 Kim Baker Vidas Davey-Irvin

i love these, but i’m wondering how well the print gowns will work in a real-world setting, with lights and poor accessorizing (like someone who might think it’s a good idea to add a statement necklace a la annie at the oscars) and without supermodel slimness.  i can totally see elle fanning wearing some of the short pieces, and i hope she finds better shoes to wear with them.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1266410766 Phyllis Craine

I hope Florence Welch considers the red gown on the right, it’s perfect for her

    • sekushinonyanko

I can see Leelee Sobiesky totally rocking the longer looks in this collection. No young woman does severe but striking better.

    • Corsetmaker

When I look at Valentino collections I can never get out my head that their customer base is not young, and increasingly coming from the Middle East, Russia and China. It’s always been quite a mature house (apart from the mini collection a year or two back) and it tends to show. You just know those short dresses will be lengthened and the long gowns will make appearances at diplomatic dinners.
I do like those very simple red dresses though.

    • Ediths_Head

Oh, dear God, let that red gown with the white collar (and others like it) deliver us from another season of lace-disease red carpetry. This is the amazing mix of history and modern that (*gulp*) A McQ didn’t deliver this time!

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I like the Cruella De Ville coat.

    • aahlife

I love the long dresses that are long sleeved and high necked. So pretty and not dowdy. I wish there were more evening gowns like is, I am always searching.

    • http://twitter.com/DarthJaeda Jaeda Laurez

I recognize the quality of all of them- but I don’t like anything :-( Not my asthetic.

    • Vanja

In April prince Willem-Alexander will be crowned king. Some fashion people here in the Netherlands think this is Valentino’s open job application for making the dress for princess Maxima (his wife) for the coronation.  Valentino also made Maxima’s wedding dress. Seeing all the red, white, blues, Delft’s blue and ermine capes I think they’re right.

      • myristica_fragrans

i am so here for all of that!

    • ChelseaNH

I love the colors and textures.

But if you’re going to have so many short (short!) dresses, do not cast models with scary legs.  Just a tip.

    • guest2visits

Half of this is sending out a Wednesday Addams kind of vibe;  but the rest is fantastic.

    • http://twitter.com/steph_ya Stephany M.

I love the vibrant red and blue dresses, all six of them.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Those red dresses made me gasp.  I love them.

    • http://twitter.com/CaitrinofFenris Caitrin

Well, aside from the red dresses reminding me of “The Handmaid’s Tale” (NOT a good association, if you don’t know) and a few of the others making me feel like I should make sure my husband’s things are properly laid out and that the servant’s wages are ready to disperse, it was all quite lovely. I thought the last 4 dresses in particular were the prettiest and would look lovely on Cate Blanchett in a period piece film.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=556901765 George Mortimer

      This is sensational stuff, wow!

    • DeTrop

Not for all the money in the world.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

      First row: Wednesday Addams

      Fifth row: The Handmaid’s Tale
