Taylor Swift in NYC

Posted on March 28, 2013

Tay-Tay looks kind of awkwardly cute here.

Taylor Swift heads out and about in New York City.

Ralph Lauren Slim-Fit Cable Cashmere. Ray-Ban Original Wayfarer. Mark Cross Scottie Large Flap Satchel.

If we had to come up with a mental picture of her street style, something along these lines would probably pop into our heads. While we wouldn’t call this look edgy or even all that interesting, it’s much more stylish, to our eyes, than a couple dozen virginal white red carpet dresses. We think she should figure out how to transition this “socialite with an edge” look to the red carpet.

Having said that, the fit on those pants is more than problematic. We don’t know how she’s avoiding cameltoe, but we suspect her chances of avoiding it diminish rapidly the longer she wears them. Also: that purse absolutely does not go with the rest of the outfit. Still, we’re feeling full of love this spring morning and can’t really work up any anti-Tay sentiments. Besides, we think the shoes are adorable.

Those shoes are life-giving, but how can she breathe in those pants? Oh, that’s right…she’s 23!

  • leftcoastpickle

She should give that bag to me, it’s my birthday and it matches all my outfits.

  • Those shoes? I am so not loving those shoes. More than “socialite with an edge”, I get the 50s vibe. Which, in reality, is more play on that whole “old fashioned girl” shtick she peddles. But I’ll cut her some slack and concede that *maybe* that is her styling of choice and not more fabricated image construction.

  • Nice_Shirt

She seems to have a fondness for interesting, clunky shoes in her daywear looks. That instinct will serve her well if she expands on it a bit. (Coming from an unabashed lover of interesting, clunky shoes.)

  • AuntHo

I find it refreshing, yet still annoying, that her sweater is covered in lint. If I’m world famous making millions, I will not be leaving the house unrolled. That is someone’s JOB, bitches.

  • Nice elements but I don’t like them together. I really think you need shoes with a lower vamp to avoid stumpification with trousers that length.

  • I want to take a lint brush to that sweater.

I dislike the shoes intensely and especially dislike them with the cropped pants. Which I also hate.

    • The shoes might be cute and really expensive, but they bear much too strong a resemblance to my 90 year old mother’s Easy Spirit Esmotion shoes for me to separate the two in my head.

      • OMG I love the shoes. I have the shoes, actually, in brown and much much cheaper. This is my IDEAL outfit/gender presentation. Kinda butch, a little femme, totally slick. It’s a real-person outfit and makes her look, for once, totally relatable.

        • Meg0GayGuys6

Thank you. I was scrolling down thinking, “am I really the only one who likes this?” Honestly, if I had her body (and bank account… keeping my lack of fame), this is exactly how I’d dress.

      • ConnieBV

        Hell yes.

  • librarygrrl64

That bag against those pants is setting off my borderline OCD. They do NOT go together!!!!

  • The pants should be looser fitting like trousers. This tight they end up looking like yoga pants.

    • MoHub

The pants also need to be full length with those shoes. Otherwise, she needs a pair of kicky little ballet skimmers.

    • NC_Meg

That’s what I thought, too. It’s throwing me off because when I look at the bottom half of the pants, I like them. They look like pretty red trousers. But the top half? No.

  • Probs avoiding cameltoe because doesn’t have a vag? She’s like a real life Barbie.

    • For the record, I’m envious that she can wear those pants, if a little mystified. I wish TayTay no ill will, and very much enjoyed playing with Barbies when I was young. So…no more down-voting me, Barbie/TayTay lovers, for I come in peace!

  • I have learned after the leggings craze that I really appreciate a zipper and button closure. Something so odd about “pants” that look like this remind me of my grandmas pull on elastic waist pants or leggings/yoga pants.

    • Amen. I love cropped pants, but I always go ones with a button and zipper to add structure. However, I could do without the front pockets on women’s dress pants – they just add lines to your thighs and no one uses the pockets anyways!

  • thecitysleeps

It’s ok TLo I’ll fork out all the anti-Tay sentiments the world will ever need.

  • capybara_cafe

I love a good granny shoe, but there’s something bugging me about these that I can’t pinpoint. The sweater is adorable though.

    • RebeccaKW

To me, they look like dance shoes. Tap shoes. She stole Gregory Hines footwear.

      • capybara_cafe

Poor Gregory. Do we need to take up a collection to buy him new ones?

        • madhatteryfan

No reason you should know this, but he died in 2003.

          • capybara_cafe

I guess he doesn’t need the shoes then.

          • RebeccaKW

I did not know that, and I love him. That makes me sad. Now, I’ve got to watch White Nights. Mmm. Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines in one movie? Swoon.

          • SoAustentatious

Me, too. He died so young. I was an extra in a movie he made and he was a FABULOUS person. Just adorable.

And “White Nights”? Love it. GH and MB together? Dancing and Detente. I watch it whenever it’s on.

    • Amelia

To me they look weirdly long and molded to her foot.

  • Anna K

The cropped pants + cropped sleeves make her look like everything shrunk in the wash, but she does look pretty cute and happy, so I can’t ding her too much.

  • Those pants look like the result of a surprise bonus look challenge on PR.

  • MilaXX

It’s a sort of nerdy chic look. I like

  • I would cut her for those shoes.

    • NDC_IPCentral

I don’t want to get into an argument, truly, but why do people use this violent expression “I would cut X for Y?” I think that makes the poster sound pretty harsh, since the ‘cutting’ isn’t cutting in line, now is it?

      • I believe it originated from an SNL skit.

      • I think because most people don’t literally plan on cutting someone for X item. It is just a more colorful way of saying that you covet said item. When something blows your mind, your brain doesn’t literally go flying across the room.

  • Tatiana Luján

I like the look, ven though i don’t like the amount of stretch fabric in those pants.

  • Donna Tabor

Note to T-Lo, who has admitted a lack of knowledge about women’s anatomy (which we love you for, by the way): Not all women have cameltoe.

This has been a public service announcement.

But after the Jon Hamm-no-underwear topic, this does seem apropos.

  • marilyn

The short pants bring it into the world of laundry day, and out of things to wear.

  • kimmeister

Her legs almost look photoshopped! It’s like they belong to a mannequin.

  • Indigo54

This is cute and comfy looking. Ignore the bag.

  • Ms_Flyover

I have that sweater, except it isn’t cashmere, and I spent about $20 on it. Looks about the same, complete with lint.

    Those pants are &*^ing hideous.

  • Sara__B

I saw the thumbnail and thought, “Chloe Sevigny!” and was utterly disappointed it was actually Taylor Swift.

  • another_laura

I kNOW!! I love those shoes!! All else is forgiven.

  • Too basic. Plus, black + autumnal tones is boring.

  • j_anson

I like the shoes, but it looks SO uncomfortable to wear them without socks. They look like they’d rub like crazy.

    • Maybe she has peds (or something similar on) – that’s what I wear with my brogues if I want the “sockless” look.

  • Zippypie

The shoes look geriatric on her bony ankles with the high water “pants” or whatever they are. I just can’t stand this chick. Not chic, not cute, not anything.

  • lrober03

“We don’t know how she’s avoiding cameltoe”
With the quantity of high waisted hot pants she wears on stage, I don’t think she’s really avoiding it.

  • snarkykitten

high waters. and a sweater that makes her look like her headlights are on. That chick in the back in the boots & t-shirt looks better than Taylor does

  • alyce1213

The right underwear will prevent camel toe, which I don’t think is going to happen here.
She should have a talk with Jon Hamm about proper undergarments..

  • JauntyJohn

I’m a fan of this outfit, if not of this artist. I especially like the color of the bag with the color of the pants. Even though those are maybe a touch Autumnal the outfit reads Spring. And I like the what-if-the-Pilgrims-had-pop-stars-what-would-they-wear-on-their-feet? shoes. They’re probably comfortable, and look sturdy, and are a twist. I can’t go so far as to say witty, but certainly a twist.

  • BrooklynBomber

Pants made to fit like this are all over the place this season. It’s a bit much. Camel toe aside, they only look good on about .01% of women.

    • alyce1213

She happens to be one of them.

      • BrooklynBomber

Yes… she’s in the .01%. Occupy Taylor Swift!

  • SaraQ

She looks like every girl at NYU, down to the big brown bag with black clothes. I don’t know whether that’s a good or bad thing, though, for a younger celebrity.

  • Trisha26

I guess my “fashion” sense is on vacay because this look does nothing for me. The shoes are orthopedic abominations.

  • My god, you are full of love this morning!

  • Celia Bonadies

    Sister Mary Golgotha shoes. No.

  • Imasewsure

I tend to prefer longer tops with shorter pants but this looks cute to me (except the bag which is clashy). Love those shoes… but then again, this looks like a better version of everything I have in my closet!

  • korilian

Boring sweater and ugly pants. What exactly makes this stylish? The fact that it cost a fortune or the fact that a celeb is wearing it? I can’t help feel that the average housefrau that went out like this would get signed up for a make-over.
(the bag is kind of cute though).

  • Yes, the shoes are adorable (says the woman with three pairs of brogues in her closet, including a bright silver pair), but the pants are a no for me – a zipper fly and button at the waist would go a long way towards making them seem more substantial. I do like the color, though.

  • BobStPaul

That’s a truly unflattering outfit – possibly the worst I’ve ever seen her wear.

  • I love the purse, just not with this outfit. A cabled sweater and cropped pant are a must for my wardrobe, but I just CAN’T with those shoes. “LOATHE” is the word that comes to mind with me. I wore oxfords every day years ago, as part of my school uniform, and I don’t think I can ever get on board with them again.

  • ccm800

I wish she’d take a long runway off a short red carpet…or visaversa – whichever makes her go away.

  • nannypoo

There’s lint on her sweater. Even I know enough to use a lint roller, but then why aren’t I famous? Anyway, I thought the purse looked pretty great so I looked it up. For $2350 it should be even greater.

  • MissAmynae

she’s carried that bag many times before- maybe she just loves it and doesn’t care that its not matchy. There’s someone else, maybe Hathaway?, that has this butt-ugly little yellow bag that doesn’t really go with most of what she wears, but she loves it and carries it anyway. I like that.

She looks cute here. I don’t like the pants, but she appears relaxed and comfortable, and not like she’s trying too hard.

  • ThaliaMenninger

    What’s the story, morning glory?
    What’s the word, humming bird?
Have you heard about Taylor and Joe?
    Did they really break up?
Did she write a song yet?
Does she have a new boy?

  • Laylalola

    Oh God.

  • I think those are the J Crew “Minnie” pants. I have them, too… and now I know how terrible they look. Thanks Tay!

  • guest2visits

I think if the pants were long I would be able to tolerate the shoes – but they’re not; hate those shoes. Not crazy about
the length for these pants and I think she should be using a more fun or interesting bag. Pretty sweater and shades.

  • The shoes are adorable if she was getting cast in a basement production of Spring Awakening. Those shoes are uggbombs– ugly.

  • siriuslover

OK, I’ll work it up for you guys. The fit on the pants is horrible, and I don’t care if they’re supposed to be capris, it looked like she ran them on hot in the wash. The sweater is OK. The shoes look like smelly old bowling shoes.
    There, that wasn’t so hard.

  • calimon

Even if there is no cameltoe, all i see is cameltoe.

  • MzzPants

It feels like updated 50’s to me too. Now someone get her a goddam quarter pounder.
