Selena Gomez in Lovers & Friends

Posted on March 08, 2013

We should hate this, but there’s something so “seventies suburban cocktail party” about it that we can’t work up the bile.

Selena Gomez attends The Alliance For Children’s Rights’ 21st Annual Dinner in Beverly Hills, California in a Lovers & Friends maxi dress.

Lovers & Friends Fairytale Maxi Dress

Nothing wrong with a groovy maxi-dress and a big honkin’ pendant to go with it. It’s a classic, we say. We just wish it didn’t have the side cutouts or the split sleeves. Then again, we suppose those are the only elements that keep it somewhat in the realm of the modern. Still, it looks like she literally pinned her skirt to her top. We were gonna subject this one to a vote, just to see if anyone else responded to the key party vibe of it, but no. We’re comfortable declaring this one OUT on our own. It feels like a good idea, poorly executed. Fill in the splits and the cutout, lower that waist a tad, and slap a modern-looking belt on that thing and then we can talk.

Not in love this this at all!  Tacky and cheap looking.

    • http://twitter.com/janedonuts Jane Donuts

I should really hate this, but I don’t. Can’t quite give it an IN, but she is pretty much making it work. Must be so novel for someone her age to dress like that.

    • lrober03

I can accept the sleeves, but not the stomach cutouts.
Also that small of a polka dot is a hard pattern to pull off

    • Annabelle Archer

I love it. For her. She’s got youth on her side here.

      • Lizzyisi

Me, too. I think she looks adorable and like she’s dressing in something her grandmother wore when gramma was young and sexy.

        • CakesOnAPlane

Well, slap my ass and call me Betty, I like it too!

    • ChiKat67

I kinda like it. Don’t even hate the exposed sides.

    • Super_Red

I had cutouts as a rule, but I can rock some split sleeves and love those on the dress. I agree- lower the waist, add a belt- and this is perfection.

    • Janet B

Selena wears it better than the model, but it’s an Out for me.

    • Sobaika

HATE split sleeves with a burning passion, but I agree that she looks very good. What is happening to me?

      • charlotte

Don’t worry, Selena just wears seventies so very well.

      • eowyn_of_rohan

Agreed.  It’s just one of those perfect dress/wearer pairings, even if the dress itself doesn’t work on its own.

    • Diego!

I disagree, she looks very good indeed! She is way better than Lea Michele for example! :P

    • PrunellaV

I think it works on a young, cute girl like her. I would have voted it in.

    • aeb1986

I think she looks really great. Could do without the cut-outs but I think shes young enough to pull it off. Oh and she also has the abs to pull it off…damn

    • newleaf1

I really like it on her.  She looks groovy.  Just needs a pair of big honkin sunglasses to go with it.

      • http://twitter.com/jallioop JanW

She’s totally channeling Mila Kunis on That 70s Show.

      • Kristin McNamara

        And big honkin hoops!

    • teensmom99

      Don’t try this at home!

    • Ms_Flyover

Immediately thought of Allison Janney or Sigourney Weaver in the Ice Storm. I sort of love this despite myself.  I think the hair is a necessary part of the outfit.

    • Trisha26

She looks so young this just feels like ” retro dress up” to me…very Ali MacGraw with center parted straight hair. I hate the cutouts at waist and sleeves.

    • SorayaS

Aww I would have said IN. Her hair, makeup and accessories are perfect- the dress is a little tacky I’ll give you that but she’s young and gorgeous I think she pulls it off and looks comfortable! I’ll take 10 of these before a too-tight gyno dress so many startlets default to.

    • kimmeister

The big honkin’ pendant looks like some sort of suspender clip that is keeping the skirt up!  It’s unfortunately placed.

I am a sucker for split sleeves though and think they look great.

    • poggi

She wears this dress as well as anyone could. I like the way it fits her and her accessorizing better than the model. It still don’t like it, but it almost works.

    • SewingSiren

      Linda Ronstadt realness.

    • sk8tfan

It’s time for side cutouts to be consigned to the fashion junkyard, never to be resurrected.

    • fnarf

Pretty sure I saw Rhoda wearing this on a mid-period Mary Tyler Moore Show.

      • serenab44

Totally.  She always rocked what she wore.  I think she’s’ adorable here and has killer abs she should show off.
        And here’s to Valerie Harper…

    • sockandaphone

at least she makes it look better than the model’s?

    • Teri Brinson

IN from me too. She’s so cute, and covered up yet sleek. Frankly, the 70s and 80s were long enough ago that the best of those styles should be referenced and considered modern now. When I hear a person, Nina Garcia for example, say how old and dated one of those looks are it makes her seem old and dated.

    • conniemd

Kinda seems like a weird dress for “Children’s Rights” with the cutouts and the sleeves.

      • alyce1213

Gee, I thought I was strict.  Even with the cutouts, which are demure, I don’t find this outfit “suggestive” in any way.
The split sleeves too?  It’s just arms.  Split sleeves don’t imply tearing fabric — as did, for example, the Pucci dress with frayed torn shoulders that was posted a couple of weeks ago.

    • jw_ny

I like it..including the cut outs.  Cool pendant too.

    • alyce1213

I like it, and there’s plenty I shouldn’t like — the cutouts, split sleeves.
Yet all together with the right girl, which she is for this look, it works for me.
      A big resounding, IN.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen her act or sing, but I like her style.

    • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

It would get an IN from me as well and normally I loathe split sleeves and side cutouts. She looks cute and hair is perfect. Gah, where’s my morning cup of tea.

    • http://www.facebook.com/AntoniaDonnelly Antonia O’Connor Donnelly

I’m giving it an in.  I think she looks cute.

    • butterflysunita

I really like it.  The pendant helps the look at lot.

    • libraangel

I agree: looks like she ripped and pinned parts of this

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I actually like this so much better than the bedazzled crap she usually wears.  And she looks her age!

    • Anniebet

Uh oh, belly skin. She’s cute here, but something’s not working. The weird join of the top and skirt is, well…weird – wonder if it’s joined in the back as well? That pendant looks okay, but in the close up it looks cheap, very cheap.

    • MilaXX

It has a young Ali McGraw feeling about it, but I hate the cut outs.

    • LaSylphide

I don’t know how old she is (or who she is, for that matter), but she looks extremely young, and love it or hate it, the outfit just looks too grown up for her.

    • filmcricket

Literally my first thought was “Congratulations on your obliques, girl!” Damn. I am impressed, envious, and despairing all at once.

That said, I think this is a case of good idea, poor execution.

    • ankali

TLo’s suggestions would improve this immensely. Honestly, though, I could live with the cutouts — she’s the right age and has the abs to get away with them. The slashed sleeves are the dealbreaker for me; as a design element, they always look so trying-too-hard.

    • http://twitter.com/jaythenerdkid Aaminah Khan

I actually kind of love it on her.

    • l_c_ann

This looks too much like a very simple Simplicity pattern made without knowledge of interfacings.

    • siriuslover

I don’t know, I get the critiques, I really do, but she’s working it. I know she’s already been declared out, but I give her a shout out from out here in CA.

    • demidaemon

I just don’t think this is approriate for the event. Too sexy/hippie, if that makes any sense.

    • BuffaloBarbara

I like the cut-out sleeves, but not the cut out waist.  I’ll meet it halfway there.

And the pendant gets points from me.

    • trisker

I’m with the general opinion of the BKs here too — IN.  There are faults, but she looks very pretty.

    • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

I like it. It works for her.

    • Kirsten Kirsten

I love it as a concept on her, but i agree that this particular garment looks cheap. The dodgy hem isn’t helping either

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I like the sleeves and cutouts but the skirt in what looks to be cheap rayon leftover from bank teller blouses is upsetting. If it were all solid black I’d be happier. Those obliques are too good not to showcase.

    • Terrible_Person

You may not be able to work up the bile, but I am. Hate the stomach cutouts. The only good things I can say is that hair and makeup look great.

    • LambeeBaby

I dig it. Sock it to me!

    • ninja_girl_01

OUT! A young Mrs. Roper look…uh, why?

    • AViewer44

I think it’s cute but the sight of her highly toned abs is a little disconcerting. On the fence. But 70s suburban cocktail party garb? I grew up in fairly sophisticated suburbia in the 70s and I never saw any cocktail party attendee wearing anything like that. Unless it was someone’s sexy divorced mother (a combo that happened rarely) and then she’d have moved out of suburbia or wouldn’t be going to suburban parties.

    • mmc2315

I think it’s working for her.  I’m a little surprised, because she’s short isn’t she?  I like her pendant necklace SO much better than the necklace on the model.

    • decormaven

The cut-outs are annoying. The necklace looks like a bad knockoff of a Worlds of Warcraft accessory.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/3DRRZR36XZSTQSLON4LXERKRHA Stephanie

I like it, only she needs to be wearing platforms and have her hair crimped.

    • melanie0866

I think it’s groovy!  Reminds me of something my mom and/or Cher would wear.

    • Crystal

I just wish it were either side cutouts OR split sleeves. But it looks nice on her.

    • guest2visits

She looks pretty in it as it is; but it doesnt read as a very expensive piece of clothing… like it would be ok for a very casual party or
an evening in the yard with some drinks, bbq, etc…

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

IN.  If you fill in the waist and sleeve cutouts, she’d look like she was from “Maude” – and we wouldn’t want that!

      • minnye

I agree! It would be way too much dress for her. This strikes a great balance – she looks darling.

    • http://twitter.com/pattylapatty pattycupcake

I want to hug her for standing there being so darn cute while giving that whole horrid ’70s thing a try.

    • fringebenefit

You go girl. I love her style. I think she’s maybe a stich too short for this dress, though. It requires statuesque.

    • NinjaCate

OUT. I WANT to like it more than I do, but I just don’t.

    • PeggyOC

She’s been hanging out with Vanessa Hudgens too much.  She clearly stole this from girlfriend’s closet.

    • dawnboo

Having lost an hour of sleep over the weekend, the Bitter Kittens rise up in revolt, voting this IN against the expert advice of their dear Uncles T and Lo. ; )  JK… We love you guys!

    • EEKstl

I like it.  She’s rockin’ Ice Storm Realness.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

looks like someone slashed her dress to pieces with a knife trying to get at her breasts.  or maybe i’ve been reading too much game of thrones.
