Selena Gomez for Harper’s Bazaar

Posted on March 07, 2013

Selena gets the Terry Richardson treatment for Harper’s Bazaar. The good news is she managed not to flash panties. The bad news is the pictures couldn’t be any duller.

Selena Gomez covers the April 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar magazine photographed by Terry Richardson and styled by Beth Fenton.

But before we get to trashing Terry Richardson…

On having two deliberate fashion personalities: “If I’m going to the MTV Movie Awards, I’m going to dress a certain way, but if I’m going to the MTV Music Awards, it can be a little more out there. I mean, I’m probably the only one that notices, but, there’s two distinct Selenas.”

ATTAGIRL. This is probably our Number One bit of advice for budding fashionistas. You should not only know your venue, you should have a range of looks devised for various venues. That is to say, many fashionistas – especially those in the public eye – do not dress the same way all the time. They have a range of personae that they cycle through based on their moods and where they’re going. This is why it’s always better to have a wardrobe than to have a set of outfits hanging in your closet. Outfits are limiting; a wardrobe is full of possibilities.

Prada Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Stina Rapp Wastenson

Christian Dior Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Valery Kaufman (MARILYN)

As for Terry Richardson, we just don’t get this guy. Why hire someone who works hard to ensure his pictures look as amateur as possible? Little tip for the editors out there: an actual amateur would give you the exact same shots for a couple hundred bucks and a Selena autograph.

I had been hoping that satin…thing would have died after Elle Fanning wore it.  No such luck.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=639062430 Sara Padilla

I think this pink satin nonsense is Prada’s equivalent to the Chopping Broccoli Song.  They are out of ideas.

        • zenobar

God bless you and your reference to the “Chopping Broccoli” song.  Because you are dead-the-hell-on.  *slow claps*

      • random_poster

That Prada dress is absolutely sad.

    • Jessi03

I loathe Terry Richardson.  I don’t understand how is he still working.

      • lovelyivy

The power of cronyism over talent.

      • gabbilevy

It blows my mind. And yet, he’s everywhere. What gives?

        • Cynica

          Compromising photos of fashion editors?

        • http://twitter.com/omg_dora Dora K.

Obviously he’s friends with the right people. It wouldn’t be worth more than an eyeroll if the only problem was his lack of talent :-

      • http://twitter.com/lisledanielle Danielle Lisle

        He gives me the creeps.

        • H2olovngrl

          He gives everyone the creeps.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

She is on my irrational hate list, and Terry is on my justifiable hate list. I cannot be objective.

      • ChiliP

Just out of curiosity, why is she on your irrational hate list? I know “irrational” is the integral word in that phrase, but I’m just curious. She kinda bugged me until she ditched the Bieber, but she’s starting to grow on me. Although she might lose any goodwill she built up with that Spring Breakers movie…

100% agreement on TR. I can’t even bring myself to type his name.

        • aeb1986

I agree! I really like her. She somehow seems like a sweet, down to earth girl considering the way shes grown up

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I wished I had justifiable reason, but I believe its the same reason I dislike Taylor Swift. On paper they are very likable, but something about the execution about public persona annoys me. Not to mention, her and Swift are BFF, so that probably doesn’t help.

          • ChiliP

Fair enough. I dislike Vanessa Hudgens solely for her constant deployment of duckface on the red carpet. If that’s not the most ridiculous reason to dislike a person you’ve never met, then I don’t know what is.

            • H2olovngrl

              What she said.

    • Annabelle Archer

I loath Terry Richardson with the fires of a thousand Hells.

Selena is a beautiful young woman, I doubt she’ll make it big and will likely fade away, but maybe she’ll get cast in just the right role.  I’ve been enjoying her fashion choices lately, but these photos do nothing for her.  Of course her mouth is open, of course her dress is being pulled up.  Not shown here is another shot where she’s under a giant opening flower umbrella, because – of course.

      • Snailstsichr

I’m so happy she broke up with that ninny, I keep hoping she has a huge career long after he fades away. This is probably because I can’t stand him, but she seems to be proof that living well is the best revenge.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

And, other than the cover outfit, could they have picked things that suited her less?  That Dior thing is atrocious on her, and the Prada is so badly posed it looks shapeless and ill fitting.

      • Little_Olive

I’m afraid the Prada *is* shapeless and therefore ill fitting on anyone. I don’t see Nina giving that overworked mess a pass on a PR judgement. Whoever thought the evils of satin -pale satin- could be avoided in an origami-ish concoction was on non-FDA approved substances.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

See now, as a costumer and lover of the shiny, satin is a friend of mine.  And I think it can be deployed with style and grace.  That Dior thing is Hih-Dee-Uss in every respect.  I think it would be awful in any textile.

    • conniemd

Could they possibly have picked three more boring and strange looking outfits for this photo shoot? Perhaps they might work in a setting that evokes a certain mood, but with the plain pink background, and her less than stellar poses they leave me with and “I don’t get it” opinion of clothes from three “big name” fashion houses.

      • Little_Olive

Oh, I’d say it’s “the TR way”. You know, not enough imagination to produce a shoot where people are not showing T&A.

        • cowper

Yes, the TR shots are making her look brainless/clueless (esp. orange one). Which is how I suspect men who like underage porn want their underage porn.

    • bertkeeter

Think you have the PRADA and DIOR mixed up? TR …go back to art school!

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

        Thanks! Fixed.

    • MilaXX

I am impressed that she almost makes that Dior work. It doesn’t look like a diaper like it did when Elle Fanning wore it.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

“Terry Richardson treatment” – ew. I think that requires a shower afterwards.

      • Annabelle Archer

Silkwood style.  And possibly some strong antibiotics.

        • Fordzo

          And Lysol.  Lots of Lysol.

          • H2olovngrl

            And therapy. Intense psychotherapy.

    • PastryGoddess

Apparently Terry only takes interesting pictures when tits, ass and vags are showing.  Did he fall asleep while taking these pics?

      • http://twitter.com/omg_dora Dora K.

I don’t find his ass pictures interesting either. Just immature, sleazy and off-putting, especially in the context of the many many stories about him taking advantage of models.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

Terry Richardson?  I can only presume he has some dastardly blackmail material against every fashion editor who employs him.

    • zenobar

I know I’m taking my life in my hands on a fashion site but…

      Prada is overrated.

      There, I said it.

      • VioletFem

Agreed. Aside for some of  the accessories ( purses and  glasses), I’m usually pretty underwhelmed by Prada.

        • zenobar

Exactly this.  I have no beef at all with the accessories (except for the latest crop of stoopid-hiddy footwear), but the clothing itself has (IMO) had a whiff of desperation for a few years now.  The simple, stark looks they used to do were amazing.  The latest stuff – no thank you.

(As if Prada is knocking my door down, begging me to wear their stuff… ;)

      • TRSTL

AGREED!  I have two pairs of Prada boots that really are amazing, well made and comfortable like slippers and a few pairs of sunglasses I really, really like but the clothes?  Especially for women, it is dull, odd fitting and weird most of the time.  “Nipple darts anyone?”

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=610791985 Aniela Marie Perry

The latest stuff isn’t so exciting for me, but I loved the Spring 2011 stuff with the monkeys.

      • Little_Olive

I want to hit the Like button so many tines now.

      • http://twitter.com/lisledanielle Danielle Lisle

No, I’m totally there with you. I’ve been constantly underwhelmed by Prada, with the exception of some of their bags.

    • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

Am I the only one who thinks that all of the clothing in this editorial sucks? Some elements are cute, but then – a red striped romper thing? A white top/dress that is overly complicated and not at all flattering? An orange dress with a misplaced apron hanging off of it? Just – no. Stop. Please. Stop.

      • lexilexi

I couldn’t agree with you more.  These clothes are hideous.

      • http://twitter.com/omg_dora Dora K.

The cover looks nice because you can’t see it’s a romper shaped to fit a diaper inside. It looks like a cute top.

        • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

I agree! It was the runway version that really set off my gag reflex….

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I feel bad for her that she probably  had TR leching all over her. But at least she avoided the heart-shaped sunglasses and lollypop, so this is something of a win.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

      Where are my painkillers?

    • http://twitter.com/kendallbrunson SassyMcFrench

This is depressing. They made DG & Dior look lack-luster. That Prada dress was awful to begin with (folded satin – really?).

I was taking better photos at 4 with a polaroid.

    • jilly_d

I’m pretty sure that Prada “dress” is literally the ugliest thing ever created in the history of the world.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/37TPKASIMXVUPYK5BNQFOL43KU Carina

I have a cringing reaction to this whole thing…she just looks like a dressed up child.

    • Carla_Charlton

As far as I’m concerned, Terry Richardson shouldn’t be getting any work.  I’m really sick of photos taken against a stark white or other background set up to look like a cheap porn audition.

    • Little_Olive

Is there ANY way to vanish that whole Prada collection? I cannot take one more piece of it.

    • Qitkat

TerryR to any female subject: Could you scootch that up just a little higher honey? and while you’re at it, open your mouth juuust a little bigger.

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I don’t want to “like” that because it made my skin crawl, but yes, well channeled!

    • Kate4queen

Stark background, skirt hitched up to there, open mouth and silly girly expression-yup its TR photo shoot all right.

    • Pants_are_a_must

And hopefully, after that photoshoot she got a restraining order.

The clothes are boring to the extreme.

    • lobsterlen

I always feel in need of a shower after looking at Terry Richardson photo essay involving a teenager. You just know Terry drives around in a unmarked van with no rear windows. The FBI should search his attic or dig up his basement just as a precaution.

    • Trisha26

So she’s saying the MTV Movie Awards are more serious than the Music Awards? Pfft! Oh, the 3 looks are hein and the photos look like colorful mugshots.

    • siriuslover

I hate this guy’s photographs. Why just put someone up against the wall like that? Dull is right, which is unfortunate because she has such a strong personality.
On a fashion note, I can’t get over what looks like a patch stripe in that first picture. Is it just me? What is that?

    • lrober03

Uggh a pink dress against a pink background.
      Not original or flattering

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1208138556 Sara Munoz Munoz

Ooh, poor thing got saddled with some UGLY clothes. She’s working them as best she can, but… man.

    • peachy

      boring, all the way around.

    • http://twitter.com/DarthJaeda Jaeda Laurez

Thank you re: Terry Richardson’s photos- if you want it to look like you got creeped on by the faceless Chester from the Calvin Klein commercials a while back, please keep hiring him.

    • OrigamiRose

I had just sighed when I saw the credit for Terry Richardson, and then this:

“But before we get to trashing Terry Richardson…”

I love you guys.  And you were far more restrained in your trashing than I would have been :)

    • libraangel

BORING. And what is that red stripe going up to her boob in the first photo? A dart, or spilled beer?

    • Carrieanno

This is what Harper’s Bazaar has become?

    • PeaceBang

      Next!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

The pink dress on the runway looks like she’s carrying the tray table from an airplane.  LOL

    • http://twitter.com/bueller806 Michelle

Horrendous photos. Terry Richardson should not be allowed within 20 feet of a camera.

      • lobsterlen

In addition to a camera … Terry Richardson should not be allowed near a school.

    • glennethph

Bad photos.  Which is unfortunate because she kinda looks great.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Terry Richardson is the Stella McCartney of photography.

    • rab01

Could the Terry Richardson hate be part of the reason he continues to get hired? If you use him, you may to get press coverage that you can’t get by using a more competent and less disgusting photographer.  I can almost see the meeting – “We can’t count on pictures being great anyway so let’s hire someone who will bring in some hate-viewers. At least we can be sure of that.”
