Ryan Gosling in Gucci

Posted on March 29, 2013

And now for some Gosling.

Ryan Gosling attends ‘The Place Beyond The Pines’ New York Premiere in Gucci.

While we appreciate the intent and the effort, we don’t think even the Gosling can pull off velvet pants. It’s a gorgeous suit, though. We have such a weakness for velvet jackets; not, like, Liberace-style ones or anything; just simple, well-fitted blazers giving that hint of richness. But you couldn’t pay us to wear velvet pants in public. We’re gay, but we’re not THAT gay, for God’s sake.

Not that we’re saying the Gosling is gay. He’s just a pretty man who likes to look pretty and thought that velvet pants would do that for him. And to be fair, they honestly don’t take away from his prettiness. But neither do they flatter him all that much and besides, that’s just too much richness for one outfit.

Also: those shoes look surprisingly cheap. If you’re going to do head-to-toe velvet, we’re thinking a dingy pair of businessman’s shoes is a particularly poor choice.

But we know you’re all going to defend him because he’s the Gosling. Have at it, ladies.

Totally with you. I appreciate a man doing something not boring for once, but it just doesn’t work. Reminds me of cushions.

  • Obviously he doesn’t have thighs like mine, but velvet suits always make me think of George’s corduroy suit and making noises everywhere he goes. So velvet suits make me uncomfortable. I agree with you about the beauty of a velvet blazer though.

  • I actually like the suit, and I like it on HIM, but here are my issues: Hands/pockets. Neckbeard.

  • claudemtl777

Maybe he cant pull off his velvet pants, but i would like a stab at pulling them off…of him…

  • MilaXX

I can’t defend this. It’s a rather boring take on the velvet suit, and the pants look maybe a half an inch too short in my eyes. Also I am apparently immune to the power of the Gosling. My lady bits are unimpressed.

    • RebeccaKW

I, too, thought they were a wee bit short. I don’t HATE the pants on him, and I know they would look better if his hands weren’t in his pockets. I agree that it’s a bit boring-something other than a white shirt and black tie would be interesting. Maybe gray shoes?

      • MilaXX

Not crazy about gray shoes. A better pair with a high polish would work. I wish he had worn a better shirt/tie. Perhaps a pale colored shirt and a tie with an interesting print.

  • Agree. Not a fan of the velvet pants. Horrid shoes. Also velvet seems a little heavy for this time of year, even though it’s still chilly…

  • Dancer

wish he’s take his hands out of his pockets…. so I can get my hands in there of course.

  • I don’t mind it, but I don’t love it. Velvet to me seems better suited to winter or fall though.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Perhaps if he took his hands out of his pockets his pants would look better, but they’d still be velvet pants though.

  • Ann Erickson

He should just go pantsless from now on. I’ll help him take them off.

  • that suit makes him look fat.

    • MilaXX

Honestly I think the slim cut pants he favors all give him girl hips. Then again I rarely like slim cut pants outside of Mad Men on anyone but the thinnest of guys.

  • alyce1213

I don’t love the pants, but he gets a pass because they don’t really look all that bad.

And imagine how nice it would feel to curl up on his velvet lap.

  • A velvet suite just looks like formal pajamas.

    • aeb1986

i take more issue with the facial hair situation

  • the velvet suit usually looks fabulous on really skinny guys but then again everything looks great on really skinny people full stop. However, considering Monsieur Gosling is slim, the suit looks quite alright. And we are completely d’accordo with the shoes. Even Willly Lohman would toss them.

  • StellaZafella

It’s the top stitching that kills it for me: Like Kid Suede, Velvet looks best with as few extraneous seams as possible to let the luxuriance of the fabric stand on its own.
So I agree with many of the posters here who say we’d be fine seeing Ryan out of this suit…or any clothes for that matter.

    • alyce1213

Shocked that a Gucci suit has a top stitch like this on velvet. Really cheapens it.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

The Gosling just never did it for me, so I have no hesitation in condemning his shiny velvet pants.

  • Imasewsure

Dig the jacket… no on the pants and no swooning for me here. He looks fine but nothing special.

  • Oh, come ON. It’s “Hey, girl” in clothing form. How can you not give that props? (Oh, sure, it could *look* better. Pish. He’s the Goz, he don’t need no stinkin’ chic.)

  • I’m confused. I can’t even see the suit because of his goofy faces. And I am fully susceptible to the power of the Gosling. What’s happening here? Why am I not swooning?

  • Janet B

Again, he’s not going to look at the camera?
Love a velvet jacket, I don’t know about the pants. Ryan looks good (except for his hands in pocket problem).

I’d like to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt try this suit.

  • another_laura

Not defending the Gosling, not in this.

Mr. Gosling: please understand that putting your hands in your pockets makes your hips look wide and thus your entire shape is like the hourglass which, mon Dieu, is not what you are going for!

  • formerlyAnon

He gets away with it, within the margin of error I’ll award for the Difficulty of Velvet and the Thickening Effect of Photography. And I’m not really much of a Gosling fan.

I agree, however, that this hints of hips he does not have. Only the really thin and lanky can get away with velvet pants. And those who want to emphasize the hips and bum, of course.

  • Rand Ortega

Tom Hiddleston can pull of velvet pants. Just sayin’.

    • formerlyAnon

You have made me think thoughts incompatible with workplace productivity.

      • Rand Ortega

        I’m here to help. ; )

  • dd2chi

he’s such a good looking boy. sigh.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I can pull off Gosling’s velvet pants. In about three seconds.

    • calimon

      You got me! Winner comment!

  • I think he looks fine and very comfy and cozy. In fact, I think maybe he and I could take a nap together. Him in his velvet suit and me, well, I’ll figure that out later. There would be spooning involved.

  • flamingoNW

Works for me. Some velvet is overly sheen-y, and other colors can be too much, but this works juuuuust fine for me.

  • barbarienne

What the hell is he looking at? Were there clowns on the roof next door?

    • jetpackdino

Clowns only he could see, from his facial expression.

      • AudreysMom

or maybe he’s grinning because he’s wearing velvet underwear, too

    • bingo

clowns with jetpacks. hard to ignore.

  • random_poster

The jacket fits well on the shoulders, but hands in the pockets makes it flare out too much. Hate the too-short velvet pants. I echo what another poster said about wanting to see this on JGL.

  • Monabel

I don’t give a fig for the guy, but I do love a velvet suit. Pants and all.

  • It’s a nice try, but it doesn’t work for me. Much like the Gosling himself. (gasp!)

  • “If I could drape myself in velvet I would” -George Costanza

  • jetpackdino

I don’t get the appeal of Gosling. No swooning here. This suit makes me wonder how much lint it attracts per hour.

    • carolynmo

Thank you! He does nothing for me, either. However, I appreciate his stylish efforts.

    • Vlasta Bubinka

I don’t get it either. Ensconced in that much velvet, all I can see is: paint an Elvis on and hang him on the wall or affix him to a van.

    • Totally agree with you. Gosling does noting for me.

And on a side note, the texture of velvet give me goosebumps… in a bad way. Just like scratching nails on a blackboard gives goosebumps to other people.

  • I’m just picturing him and Eva as a couple, walking into the event together. I think that makes both looks worse.

    • The walking equivalent of a sitting room in an old folks home.

  • editrixie

No, I’m going to defend him only because I love the idea of a velvet suit, and I think he’s pulling it off for the most part.

  • Louise Bryan

Actually, I like the Gosling, so much I’d like to goose him, but I think the suit is … not good, not flattering. It doesn’t help that his hands are glued to the insides of the pants pockets.

  • Carly Warnock

I sort of just feel like going along and liking every comment about how hot the Gos is and not really commenting because it’s completely unnecessary…

  • rococodada

My great grandmother used to make that expression when she passed gas. She was in her 90’s, bless her.

    • Peeve

I think I like your theory much better than mine as to why he looks like that! Snort!!!

  • rumcg66

Yeah, I hate to be predictable, but he can really wear whatever the hell he wants.

  • He’d be very soft if one were to rub him all over. Um. I think. This theory should be tested. FOR SCIENCE.

  • korilian

Nope. Not even the Gosling. He can keep the jacket though.

  • “Here, let me destroy the line of this expensive suit I got for free by shoving my hands in my pockets so that the crotch is all stretched out of shape.”

  • gorghast

That suit makes him look like he has really narrow shoulders.

  • Peeve

Hate to disappoint you, boys, but this PUF has no attraction to the Gosling. At all. I think he’s kinda goofy looking. But I do have a question: why is he looking slightly up in every picture? Is there something that’s caught his eye? Is it his way of avoiding eye contact with the great unwashed? Or, (my theory) is he trying to look noble and above it all?

  • Trisha26

The suit is what it is, I want to know who or what he’s looking at, it’s certainly not the camera.

  • dear lord, this guy is ridiculously doable.

  • bluefish

He looks like a little kid not feeling too comfortable in his new clothes. I think he’s very attractive on screen but doesn’t always photograph well. Very alluring in motion! I’m not wild about the suit and agree about the shoes. Wish he’d shaved. He looks unhappy. I know The New Yorker review spoiled the film without alert — too bad. That would leave me feeling chagrined in my head to toe velvet. I like him in that Drive scorpion jacket a whole lot better …

  • MzzPants

Yeah, it fits and all that. But velvet in spring?? Really? And is that a knit tie??

    • NoGovernmentName

Looks like a textured tie, not knit, though apparently knit ties are making a comeback with younger guys. I know.

  • kimiakay

Gosling does nothing for me, but I do think he looks better in jeans and scruffy than in more formal wear. Those “on the street” looks that you guys post make him look better, I think. What pants do you wear with velvet jackets?

  • the whole thing’s gone pear-shaped. Distinctly pear-shaped.

  • DesertDweller79

I look at him and think, “He looks hot”. Not so much as hot=sexy, but as in hot=high temperature. I say this because I am sitting in Phoenix where it was 89 degrees today, and I am currently running a fever of 101. So, I am now sweating in an air conditioned room of 70 degrees. And looking at a man in a velvet suit is just further contributing to my feeling hot.

  • Puckndc

    neck shave please!

  • yaby

    Yes he can!

  • Sally Brownson

That facial hair is really not working for him.

  • librarygrrl64

I actually don’t mind the “gay pants,” but the shirt and tie are a little boring with this outfit.

  • H2olovngrl

My name is _ _ _ _ _ and I don’t find this man attractive or interesting. There. I said it. Whew! Such a weight off my shoulders!

  • PeaceBang

Aside from the fact that he looks like he’s about to receive stigmata in a few of the shots, the pants are indeed too much. My love is unabated, but definitely can’t approve of the pants.

  • NoGovernmentName

I like the look head to toe, and I’ve sort of been off the Goz lately.

  • DebbieLovesShoes

“But you couldn’t pay us to wear velvet pants in public. We’re gay, but we’re not THAT gay, for God’s sake.” BRAVO, Uncles. Hilarious.

  • padma sallah

It’s gratifying to see that even Ryan Gosling can’t pull off an all-velvet get-up. It makes me feel like all is right with the world. It’s not that he looks particularly bad, but it’s not like he looks particularly great either.

  • For me it’s ok to wear a velvet jacket or velvet pants alone but never together for just this reason

  • Emily Wilkerson

I love the Golsing (and I’m so excited for this movie) but I can’t defend the ensemble. The velvet suit is not a good look. The pants areactually ok, but jacket makes him look heavier than he is and I agree, the shoes look oddly cheap.

  • Jake Donohoe

I keep thinking about the Slip-n-Slide game I used to love in the summer.

  • This isn’t his first velvet suit. And if anyone can rock a velvet suit it’s Ryan.

  • Thathoodwink

The hands in the pockets deal is making him look wide in the hips, like a penguin.

  • Actually it fits a bit like the way Franco looked in his Gucci tweed suit, doesn’t it? Something a little off about the cut of the shoulders or something.

  • warnerave

    hmm..i think he looks gorgeous!

  • cowper

Take the suit off and upholster the sofa with it….then put him in a pale beige linen suit, lounging on the sofa. NOW we’re talking!

Does no one shave the neck anymore? EEEEW.
