Rachel Weisz in Michael Kors

Posted on March 01, 2013

As non-fans of the so-called nude tones infecting red carpets and runways, we have to say, if there’s a white woman out there who can work a pale beige strapless gown, it’s probably Rachel Weisz.

Rachel Weisz attends the premiere of ‘Oz: The Great and Powerful’ held at Empire Leicester in London, England in a Michel kors gown paired with Tabitha Simmons sandals and a Sophia Webster clutch.

Sophia Webster Azealia Glitter-finished Leather Clutch

The gown looks a little heavy on her, and the fit seems off in the bodice, but she looks better in this color than a lot of ladystars would. We’d probably call that makeup harsh under other circumstances, but she needed the drama in the look. We can’t quite call it a WERQ, but we can admit that she’s lower-case (and properly spelled) working the hell out of it.

I think it works because it’s closer to a yellow muted gold rather than “blush” nude pink.

    • aeb1986

i agree it works. but i think it would work like gangbusters if it had been a bolder color which also might make the fit of the bodice look a little less wonky

    •  “It’s like Budda” (tawk amongst yourselves)

      • filmcricket

I read that as “like Buddha” and thought, “because it’s enlightened?”

        • fursa_saida

I read it as “like Buddha” too and then thought the “tawk amongst yourselves” was an instruction to us to figure out what it could possibly mean. “It’s like Buddha. Discuss.”

    •  And it’s the right nude tone to contrast with her skin tone, instead of blending in.

  • Judy_S

She looks absurdly warm and graceful. All you can say for the dress is that it gets out of her way.

    • kschwarting

My thoughts exactly.  The dress isn’t fabulous and I don’t love her hair here, but damn if she doesn’t look beautiful and classy.

  • charlotte

She looks like Anna Netrebko in the 4th picture.

  • Monday1900

    Blech.  Bored now.

    • EveEve

Agree – why is she wearing Jennifer Aniston’s dress?

  • Meg0GayGuys6

She’s so beautiful, I can hardly stand it.

The dress looks much better from straight on, as apposed to the side, IMHO.

  • iheartbuffy

this is a WERQ for me. It’s all spot on. Especially the hair

  • appliquer

    Doesn’t do anything for me.

  • shirab

I saw a picture from this event of the three women standing side by side (Michelle, Mila and Rachel) and was struck by the fact that they all opted for strapless dresses with similar necklines. No idea whether they planned it that way or whether it was coincidental, but it made them look boring as a group, even though their dresses individually were quite different.

    • charlotte

Michelle and Rachel even opted for the same nail polish. Too bad they didn’t share it with Mila. She must have felt like a fifth wheel.

    • formerlyAnon

Their dresses seem to hark back to their roles, so I suspect there was some coordination at some point.

  • Oh wow – my visceral response was “I HATES IT.” To each their own.
(It looks like wrinkled, saggy chicken skin to me.)

    • ….oh dear. I can’t unsee the chicken skin now.

    • Qitkat

    • DinaSews

Chicken skin…I won’t be able to un-see that!

    • formerlyAnon

Definitely to each their own! The part I liked most was the part you like least. 😉

    • 3boysful

Well, it’s a little sparklier than the chickens we see here in NC, but it doesn’t do anything for me, either.  Although her face is gorgeous.

    • MilaXX

No apologies required, if we all agreed this would be a pretty boring place.

    • cleverlady

bath towel… might get rid of the chicken skin image but still not good.
      old funny bath towel.

  • cowper

Love the 1940s-style movie glamour…can you imagine what these photos would look like in b&w?

  • Kyle Crawford

Who is just not bored to tears with this silhouette ? It’s not bad – we have just seen it three million times in the last couple of years . Look how ” fresh/new/exciting ” Halle Berry and Jane Fonda looked on the RC last week… shake it up ever now and again Lady Stars….

  • lovelyivy

That belt is giving me Michelle Obama flashbacks- not flattering or necessary for the dress at all. Color is pretty, but doesn’t do anything for her.

  • EEKstl

Meh.  But she looks good and the color actually works for her.

  • I don’t love this belt, it seems a bit casual.  We will call her make-up ‘acceptable’, as i don’t care for the lip color.  Otherwise she looks gorgeous.

  • Qitkat

It’s boring in the stills, but she looks pretty, and it is most likely one of those dresses that is better in person.

  • imperfectlaura

The first picture looks kind of like she’s walking barefoot through the grass in an expensive gown.  Upon looking closer, I can see she has shoes on, but that’s what it looked like at first glance.

  • Indigo54

    Awww, that’s pretty!

    • MissAmynae

you read my lips! exactly what came out of my mouth when I saw this!

  • Vlasta Bubinka

She’s lacking a crucial accessory– that husband of hers.

  • formerlyAnon

I like the shape of this dress from the front very much. (side and rear views are more ordinary).

The way the skirt is draped (if that’s the correct term), and the fact that the slit opens from the line on which the drape is gathered works really well for me. It is so much more graceful than a thigh-high open seam (though that has its place).
And the drape/gathering looks as if it shapes the skirt, waist and bodice rather than just being a bunch of fabric dragged into a point on the hip. I wonder what this would look like without the belt, and with a much more fragile-looking accent at the waist (something as flexible as a necklace in gold & matching sequins?).

    Overall, very successful.

  • Belvane

You know those scenes on TV where a character is in bed naked and then gets up, wrapping the bedspread around her to preserve the TV standards of decency?  Slap a belt on that bedspread and you’ve got this dress. Rachel looks pretty, but she always looks pretty, even in a bedspread.

    • Lisa_Cop

Really like the makeup & hair but dress is a bath towel. Meh.

  • HATE the dress.  Looks like my grandmother’s lace curtains (and matching table cloth), probably smells like moth balls. Just look at what it’s doing to her gorgeous body in the 3rd picture.

    • DTLAFamilies

Was just about to post the same thing.

  • mmc2315

Huh.  I have nothing nice to say.  I think I’ve got post-Oscars crankiness setting in.

  • Pants_are_a_must

There is so much stuff I normally wouldn’t like about this look: the gown color, the make up (particularly the overly white concealer), the schlumpiness of the fabric. Somehow, however, it works on her.

The only thing missing for me here is Daniel Craig giving everyone the finger guns.

  • SewingSiren

I don’t hate it, but wow they are really underplaying it aren’t they? If I had the chance to play witch in an OZ movie, you can bet your ass I would arrive on that yellow brick road in a big pink bubble (accompanied by appro. chime music).

    • Imasewsure

In a pink bubble with ruby slippers too…Too bad Alan Cummings isn’t in this one. He would have brought it for sure

  • ankali

There’s not much noteworthy here aside from her own gorgeousness. Which I guess is actually the sign of a pretty successful ensemble. Too bad about the mediocre fit in the bodice.

  • Annabelle Archer

Again, I’m just not feeling this. Why are all the lady stars falling short of the home run?
I blame the Franco, he ruins everything.

    • Imasewsure

      Now that is funny

    • MilaXX

I almost want to see this, but I’m afraid he’s gonna stink up the film

      • Annabelle Archer

Like bong water and dirty arm pits!

I had hopes, I love the ladies in it, but the more previews I see, the shittier it looks.  It officially lost me when I saw the clip Zack Braff brought to Ellen.

        • MilaXX

I missed that. I had to quit Ellen except for special occasion when every episode had to have a very special needy family bombarded with gifts after making the audience cry segment.

          • Annabelle Archer

I don’t cry about my actual life, there I am emotionally stunted.  I will bawl like a baby for those families though, so it’s my catharsis.

  • BrooklynBomber

Well, she’s bathed in gold light. I think this would look better if  her hair was down.

  • PeggyOC

And yet, imagine how great in red, or a blue-green color.  Even black would have been better.

  • E. D.

OK, this is a belt that definitely doesn’t work.

  • Imasewsure

I don’t like it but I love that giant (unnecessary) clutch. Love her

  • I feel like I’m looking at the color sequence/fashion show from “The Women” with this movie. Which I guess is appropriate, time wise. Can’t you just see Norma Shearer in this?

  • She is so pretty.

  • StellaZafella

…and that lighting is hella harsh!

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    It’s a WERQ for me.

  • MilaXX

She looks lovely, almost as if she is glowing. My only quibble is what appears to be Jennifer Aniston level barely there sandals that make it appear as if she is barefoot with gold bands on her feet.

    • mjude

i agree. good eye on the shoes, i usually miss those details. thank god for the bitter kittens 🙂

  • JauntyJohn

If it were a bit more golden in tone perhaps?  Regardless, there is something utterly charming going on with her in these pictures.  How often does one see a grownup star who seems actually a bit playful in the stand-and-poses?
The dress is meh but she is absolutely, through sheer presence, making *something* here work.

  • H2olovngrl

When is she going to start aging? She is just so pretty! Truly, she looks quite lovely and well put together here.ù

  • procrastinatrice

Wow, I am surprised that the reactions to this are rather negative. I think she looks very glamourous. The fit could have been better, but the dress, the hair and the make up come together in a really graceful way. Eleganza snaps!

  • l_c_ann

I’d blame the belt for being too pedestrian with the eyelets glaring as well as the buckle

  • Tr16ia

She needs a proper foundation garment underneath to smooth it all, and hike her girls up about two inches.  The dress is dragging in the back and the front.

  • jw_ny

It’s all working so good, except for the fabric.  It looks kinda like rubber…

  • She looks nice. Nothing to write home about, but she definitely can carry off this color.

  • msdamselfly

Ew      I think the color is horrible–very old lady lingerie

  • if i had a fairy godmother i would wish for rachel’s dress-wearing prowess…

  • Trisha26

Not getting this dress at all. The tiny belt looks way too casual and the overall look is granny’s tablecloth/lace curtains/bath towel.

  • AnnaleighBelle

I think it makes her skin tone look awful for some reason.

  • decormaven

This woman is a stunner, no doubt about it. Not loving the choice of fabric for this design, but she’s working it well.

  • peachy

horrific color for her. so. much. is. wrong. with. this. picture.

  • Zyxomma

Perhaps it’s my monitor, but that’s not nude, it’s butter. The belt doesn’t work, IMHO.

  • Yuval Dinoor

The backdrops for all the RC pics in the Oz tour are horrific and that’s all I see every time a pic from them is posted…

  • Zippypie

The fake golden “sunshine” lighting is not doing Rachel or the dress any favors.  The dress itself is a bit wonky fitting and way too long besides looking like old curtains left over from a Downton Abbey set.  Do not like.

  • David’s Bridal bridesmaid collection. yucka. I’m not seeing what you’re seeing.

  • libraangel

Can’t get with you on this one, T&L, Sorry old looking lingerie color – and EECCCKK! a BELT

  • I don’t even notice the dress.

If you see a photo of the three of them together, Mila Kunis looks like a saloon girl, Michelle Williams is posing stiffly, and this one just overpowers both of them.

  • bertkeeter

Real ORDINARY! A s MK would say, Where is she going??? Possibly a wedding in Teaneck, NJ?

  • ms_kat

Hate the dress… sort of like shredded skin.  But love the bag.

  • antonialee

She looks lovely, but I’m tired of these washed out colors, does anybody remember color?

  • cleep1000

  • guest2visits

She’s obviously very beautiful and I have no problem with the color; but I agree – the fabric and the style feels heavy for her.

  • She is beautiful and looks good in…nothing. Or anything. I do not understand the no color trend from people who can afford the stylist and designers who can put them in any color that particularly suits them. And although she is always beautiful, this garment does not fit. Why?

  • kathrineb

Agreed. Usually I am unimpressed by the abundance of beige, cream and greyige on the red carpet but this look is a winner. Perfect dress for her figure, I think she looks regal and beautiful.

  • ccm800

TERRIBLY unflattering – I think much is owed to the bad light in these photos as well…but no. This is not good.

  • Damien W

Drew Barrymore called — she wants her mouth back.

  • Warfield

She looks like Wallis Simpson.  And not in a good way

  • If I was boning Daniel Craig on the regular, I wouldn’t care about the color of my gown, either.

  • sweet_potato

I don’t think this does anything for her figure and the texture of the fabric makes it look like a big ole bath towel.  Nope.
