Mia Wasikowska for Dazed & Confused

Posted on March 11, 2013

Miss Mia gets to work a lens for Dazed & Confused. She’s got a ways to go before she can be declared a master at it, and really, this editorial didn’t give her much of a chance to stretch herself, since she’s obscured or doubled over most of the time, but the dresses are interesting and she makes a more-intriguing-than-the-average-starlet subject, so it’s worth a look.

Mia Wasikowska covers the March 2013 issue of Dazed & Confused magazine photographed by Theo Wenner and styled by Karen Langley.

      1st comment! Yeah!

I can’t see her face at all, but I guess it’s all right.

    • charlotte

Mia’s moment of truth came when she realized that pre-school bangs are ugly, hence this “three ways to hide my bangs” editorial.

      • kathrineb

Why does everyone here hate shorter bangs so much? I suppose long generic cocker spaniel hair is so much better.

        • charlotte

Uhm, nobody is talking about generic cocker spaniel hair in this context.

          • kathrineb

Fair enough. I just felt the need to defend her right to ignore the Hollywood hair trend of having long hair (with no shape) + long bangs.

            • charlotte

I agree with you on that, although I personally think that she looked better when she had long hair. I guess I’m just over both the pixie trend and the spaniel trend.

            • kathrineb

For some reason I really like her with short hair but I agree that she does pull of the long hair really well too!

        • Corsetmaker

Yeah fringes do seem to be on the general hate list here. I like them on the right person.  To be honest anything that’s away from the same old, same old is a plus for me.

          • kathrineb

True! it’s all about what looks good on each individual.

    • peachy

man, i love me some mcqueen…. black dress is gorg!

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

         Amen, peachy, Amen.

      • gabbilevy

I know which one you mean, but doll, they’re ALL black :)

        • http://twitter.com/iamlaggr Adriana García

But there’s only one McQueen (statement works on at least two levels)

      • 3boysful

Seriously.  I LOVE how in that shot the hat echos the chandelier, and then the gold bees on the gown also reference the lighted crystals.

        • lrober03

That is the perfect room for that dress.  We should start designing all rooms to match McQueen dress.  Interior design would be so much more fierce.

and you gotta love her face in the 2nd picture

    • crash1212

That McQueen is gorgeous and the lampshade hat is TO DIE! Could take or leave Mia…this just seemed like a supreme waste of her time.

    • aeb1986

i feel like i can spot those prada shoes from a mile away. and i mean that in the most terrible way possible.

that mcqueen gown is absolutely stunning

    • http://www.djplaw.com/ Tadiana

Not bad for a starlet.  Every time I see a picture of her I still want her face and hair to look like they did when she was in Alice in Wonderland.

    • Kate4queen

Why get someone famous to do the editorial and then completely obscure their face?

    • demidaemon

I can’t get past the pink eye make-up in the first pic.

      • kimmeister

        It’s totally repellent!

    • VioletFem

That cover makes her look like Chloe Sevigny.

      • Annabelle Archer

Ha! That’s exactly what I thought about the back shot.

      • Celandine1

In the second picture she looks like one of Chloe’s alters from behind!

      • Pants_are_a_must

This is full-on Sevigny realness, which begs the question, WHY IS NOT CHLOE SEVIGNY? I could’ve used another one of those glorious Sevigny personae blog posts T&Lo are so great at, on this dreary day.

      • phylora

        Also Toby McGuire….

        • VioletFem

          …and now I can’t un-see it.

    • Annabelle Archer

Psssst Mia…. notice they did away with those bangs of yours? Take the hint.

    • http://twitter.com/k_wilson k_wilson

Do you all remember the editorial in W when Jane Eyre came out?  Two years ago.  It was with Fassbender, there was a fencing theme, and a ton of McQueen.  I thought she looked amazing and dreamy.  Anyway, glad she’s back with more fashion with a capital F.

      • gorghast

That’s probably my favorite “duo” editorial in a long time.  Romantic and beautiful, with a combative edge.

      • http://twitter.com/starrika starrika

One of my favorite editorials of all time!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=603005248 Jeff Warhurst

Boring.  The last dress looks like those things you buy for birthday parties, that start flat, and then you open them up and they’re a bell or the body of some animal.

    • Janet B

I’m Dazed & Confused. Gorgeous clothes, but I’m not anymore interested in Mia than I was last week.

    • MilaXX

why is the best shot the one from the back?

      • Annabelle Archer

I wish my shoulders were that expressive.

    • Imasewsure

Dig the McQueen… don’t get using an actress instead of a model and then not using her… just get a model… hmmm

    • gorghast

      I LOVE her.

    • DTLAFamilies

I saw the costumes she wore in Alice in Wonderland and she is teeny tiny. As in probably under five feet tall. Her clothes looked like doll clothes. I thought of it because she looks like she’s swimming in the Miu Miu dress. And I’m guessing they had to have her sit in the McQueen dress because she’s probably a good 18 inches too short to stand in it.

      • gorghast

        Eh, she’s about 5’4″.

    • boweryboy

I like the cover photo but the rest look amateurish.

And what did they do to the McQueen hat? Why is it all squished?

      • VictoriaDiNardo

It’s really difficult to get a large brim felt hat to remain perfectly level, especially when you add weight to the edge – the wiring usually isn’t strong enough and the felt tends to shrink and pull the brim out of shape.  It also depends on the head size and how that affects the outer edge, ie pushing or pulling the circumference.  It’s always a challenge keeping them straight.  And they probably didn’t pack it well either!
( First thing I noticed – and bugged me! )

    • guest2visits

      Nodody liked those bangs, Mia.

      • kathrineb

I think I am the only person that liked them! If they were cut straighter they would have been great. I feel sad that I’m so alone in this.

        • guest2visits

Ha.. ! No need to carry that burden; bad bangs will grow out. The model’s bangs are just as short, but they look right
for her – I don’t know why they aren’t as fashionable lookng on Mia; maybe because they made her look like a really,
really, tall 5yr old.   But she doesn’t need to worry about my opinion; she’s doing fine!

    • lizajane1776

She always does the weird stuff so well.

      • Derek_anny

I hope the vampire movie she’s in with Tilda Swinton does well.  That way perhaps we can see them be weird together.

        • j_anson

Mia Wasikowska + Tilda Swinton + vampires? Oh, how flawed a world we live in that we can’t just ASSUME that would do well.

    • Trisha26

      Gorgeous clothes.

    • quiltrx

Love it all.  Great fashion choices, and much more interesting than the “smile pretty at the camera” spreads that so many starlets get.

    • http://robot-heart.tumblr.com heartbot

The biggest problem with this editorial is that her face is completely absent. For budding starlets, you’d think having YOUR FACE all over the place would be the point of agreeing to something like this.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Those are the hideous shoes Elle Fanning wore, aren’t they? Slightly better given more of a context like this.

    • Corsetmaker

Good choice of clothes, but I’m not overly wowed by the photography. And the angle of that McQueen hat against the chandelier is really bugging me.

      • Melvis Velour

That should be photographed from above to make it really work – would have looked exquisite if she was kneeling on a geometric parquet floor with the dress spread out in a circle around her.

    • decormaven

Great clothes- why weren’t they shot so their best features were fully apparent? Same goes for Mia- can’t see her! I like edgy, but let it have a purpose, please. These are obscure.

    • SewingSiren

      Half hearted .

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/37TPKASIMXVUPYK5BNQFOL43KU Carina

      LOVE the McQueen dress.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I want something with gold bees on it.

    • jmorino08

That cover shot is vexing. Why so glum, Mia? I want to buy her an ice cream.

    • http://twitter.com/kendallbrunson SassyMcFrench

The first two were kind of blah, but that third one is great (though I think the dress & chandelier are doing all of the work)

    • suzq

Glad to see someone wearing the bee dress!  I wish someone had had the guts to wear it to an award show.

    • http://twitter.com/jaythenerdkid Aaminah Khan

I’m over her. Her sad doll look is just so tiring.

    • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

Am I the only one bothered by the misshapen bee hat on the McQueen?

    • libraangel

Sciolosis will do that to you

    • altalinda

She has a strikingly beautiful back.  Nice photowork.
