Madonna at the GLAAD Awards

Posted on March 18, 2013

This is cute and it made us laugh:

Madonna at the GLAAD Awards, where she presented the Vito Russo Award to Anderson Cooper.

It’s nice to know that Madge still has a humorous sense of the theatrical and a finely tuned sense for camp. It’s a shame we don’t see this side of her much anymore. It’s infinitely more interesting than her futile – and increasingly desperate – attempts to look thirty.

And on that note, we’ll slip in a little bit of criticism:

Madge, honey. It’s just not a good idea to sport the same exact hairstyle you had 30 years ago. We love this cheeky little show of support, but we just can’t change who we are, which means your hair is making us cringe a little.

EDITED TO ADD: It seems some people aren’t getting the reference.

Plus, the fingerless gloves thing Needs To Stop. I know you hate that your hands betray your age, but, get over it gurl. We all get older.

      • deathandthestrawberry

        Yes.

        • Lizzyisi

YES! My first thought was great! She’s looking like she’s having fun–rather than feeling desperate–then I got to the cycling gloves and thought “sad.”

      • http://twitter.com/urban_gypsy Tess Danesi

First thing I thought. I’m the same age as Madge and sometimes looking at my hands makes me want to cry, but at least she has the body of teenager to comfort her. The gloves have to go.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I have long thought that learning to age with grace is one of the best gifts one can give oneself.

          • Introspective

indeed. as you age I believe you have earned the right to wear the lines on your face and other body parts proudly as evidence of the wisdom that can only come from experience.

all that said, im feeling madge for the sartorial politics at work here.

            • j_anson

If only mass media agreed. : I mean, I totally agree that aging gracefully is desirable, but it’s hard enough when you’re a regular Jane. I imagine it’s extra-hard when you’re doing it in the spotlight of a youth-obsessed industry.

        • Winter_White

“at least she has the body of a teenager to comfort her”
          Who’s she dating now?

          • http://twitter.com/urban_gypsy Tess Danesi

I meant her own body. But I’m sure she can have nearly any young, hot dude she wants to make her forget her age for a while. She is not a woman is going to age gracefully.

          • minnye

            Hee!

      • schadenfreudelicious

ugh with the fingerless gloves, just leave them to Herr Lagerfeld and move on.

      • http://www.thirteen.org/program-content/downton-dish-season-3-episode-1/ Gotham Tomato

I guess she figures if it’s good enough for Karl Lagerfeld, it’s good enough for her.

        –GothamTomato

      • Derek_anny

Maybe she can try for those gloveless fingers that were on the runway this year. (Anyone remember whose?)

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I’m surprised – pleasantly so – that the close-up photos actually show some of her age in her face. Just because she’s 50-something, and looking a little closer to that, doesn’t make her any less cool to her fans.

    • Tatiana Luján

She looks like a Toy Story character and your only complaint is the hair? Seriously?

      • http://twitter.com/CaitrinofFenris Caitrin

She’s slamming the Boy Scouts for their anti-gay stance.

        • CakesOnAPlane

Thank you for pointing this out. Reading through the comments, I started to wonder if some didn’t get the reference (not being snarky, honestly didn’t know if it needed to be pointed out – those from outside the US probably don’t know the whole controversy with the Boy Scouts).

For someone who so often purports herself as a Serious Artist, it’s nice to see her let go of the vanity (a little) and make a cheeky political statement with her clothes.

          • Tatiana Luján

I live in Colombia and didn’t have a clue about the controversy with the Boy Scouts. Now the outfit makes sense.

        • Little_Olive

I wish I knew that before I commented. I still find it too obvious, though.

        • Tatiana Luján

          Oh, I didn’t know.

        • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

I had no idea about this. Thanks for the information.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

She actually looks more like herself dressed as a boy scout than she has in a long time.

      • RedRaven617

That’s what I was thinking! I actually recognized her and smiled.

      • greyhoundgirl

Love that comment, Jessica! I agree.

    • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

If you place your hand over her head OR scroll down and stop immediately after her neck I swear you would think it’s a young boy scout.

I don’t find this campy enough to make me smile. She looks weird.

      • Sobaika

Yeah, but that was part of the point. Boy Scouts, GLAAD awards, etc. etc.

        • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

Aaah. That went over my head. Thanks.

    • http://twitter.com/katrinamayr Katrina Mayr

She looks good, but needs to whiten her chompers a bit. They’re looking old-lady-beige. And the hairstyle and color are doing nothing for her.

      • ccinnc

I was thinking the same about her teeth but hesitated to criticize. It’s such a cheap and easy fix, though.

        • http://twitter.com/katrinamayr Katrina Mayr

Exactly. She’s gone through …a lot… with her face, so a simple ZOOM wouldn’t be that hard, methinks.

    • SewingSiren

The hat and the gloves don’t go.

    • http://twitter.com/MandySCG MandyJane

      This is so adorable.

    • aeb1986

need more coffee before i can break this down

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000905542323 Rhonda Shore

Thank you! She’s starting to veer into Baby Jane territory.

      • TheDivineMissAnn

        This!!! Like x1000

      • http://twitter.com/lolacestmoi Lola Channing

Oh, honey, she veered into Baby Jane territory at least 4 yeàrs ago

      • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

THAT’S who she reminds me of! :)

    • MilaXX

This was funny. Glad to see she remembered where she left her funny bone. I do miss the Madge that changed her look every few years, but as long as it’s not overly fried blonde I don’t mind her hair.

      • RebeccaKW

Yes. I always loved that Madonna wore out-there things that weren’t necessarily ‘fashion’ but they were her style. She didn’t look ridiculous in a cone bra and men’s trouser’s b/c she owned it.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Take off the gloves and switch out the boots for something heeled and sexy and I’d say it was a public service announcement WERQ.

    • Anniebet

At least her roots match her hat.

    • http://twitter.com/irmaladuce_l8ly IrmaLaDuce

Good Lord, I wish she’d left her face alone.

    • http://twitter.com/owitY owitY

I must I do not feel the make up … here eyes look quite chinky, but the supportive outfit is a cute idea.

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Chinky?! Is that an appropriate word anywhere in 2013?

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I like it that it appears she’s not had work done. Especially around her eyes. Good for her that she can wear a boy scout uniform and fingerless glove and red lipstick and her old hairstyle (most ladies like to revert to hair that feels familiar anyway) and whatever the hell else she feels like. I know, I know, I’m giving her a pass. But for some reason, I’m just glad that she’s in the world, she’s not all strung out on drugs, she’s making her own difference for causes she cares about and apparently, she’s raised her daughter Lourdes to be a decent sort of girl. So my hat’s off to her this morning.

      • ampg

Funny, I was just thinking that the Botox and fillers are finally starting to overwhelm her naturally resilient bone structure. But I do love this look, and I think the hair is kind of necessary for it to work.

      • libraangel

BULLSHIIIIITTT!!! She definitely has had a facelift cause no hint of jowls that were starting to appear last year

        • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Well ok then, but bullshit is a bit strong. I just like her wrinkly eyes I guess. Anyway, she can wear whatever she wants in my opinion. I just don’t know why. I know she’s weird and I know she’s sortof Baby-Jane-ish, which is a fabulous description whoever said that – but man, I still weirdly like her. That’s all.

      • mhleta

I’m going to respectfully disagree. She’s about four procedures past overdone. If they hoisted her anymore she could wear her tits for a bow tie.

        • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

You have now made me spew my coffee on the screen. Tits for a bow tie is now an image I cannot get out of my eyes!

        • libraangel

          LOL about the tits!

        • fursa_saida

I agree. She’s a near-poster-girl for too much surgery, to me.

    • http://profiles.google.com/melantha.chimera Eileen Duffy

Sorry, I just think she looks desperate.

    • TheDivineMissAnn

She looks ridiculous. Not to mention Linda Rondstat used to wear boy scout uniforms on stage during the 70’s.

      • e jerry powell

Yes, but Linda Ronstadt wasn’t trying to make a statement about gays in the Boy Scouts, was she?

    • nannypoo

The hair and gloves are bad, but the rest of it is hilarious. I wonder if Anderson Cooper giggled. I love it when he giggles.

    • par3182

That’s teetering on Baby Jane territory.

But kudos on slamming the Scouts, Madge. Still got our backs after all these years.

    • YoungSally

Did she get the outfit off her newest BF? Or just borrow from JLo’s BF?

      • e jerry powell

She told them she was buying it for Rocco, actually.

    • gsk241

She’s about 20 years past her expiration date, but I’ll admit that I like this. It is cute and irreverent, just like Madonna should be. And it looks like her face is relaxing. She looks more like herself than she has for a long time.

    • Pants_are_a_must

At this point, hasn’t she had all hairstyles possible already? Just saying.

      • ampg

Good point, plus I think that going costumey meant that she needed one of her more iconic hairstyles, so it was more obviously “Madonna as boy scout.”

    • CPK1

yay Madonna! I love this. So very awesome.

    • Little_Olive

Mmmhh. Even for *Madonna* ^*at the GLADDs*, I think it’s too much. It may be seen as a weirdly “literal” or retrograde interpretation of gay/lesbian… I’m not really perceiving humor so much as desperation.

Good job turning her body into a little boy’s, though. I mean her hips are nowhere to be found.

      And the hair is AWFUL.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=610791985 Aniela Marie Perry

I think it’s more of a jab at the BSA for their issues with anti-gay policies than it is an interpretation of LGBT lifestyle.

        • Little_Olive

I didn’t know that (I don’t live in the US), another commenter cleared it too. Thanks!

Good jab then. But still a sartorial excess IMO.

    • TheLaurenJean

God, the gloves. I realize she probably has dragon claws for hands, but really. The gloves just make that point all the more obvious.

    • PeggyOC

Also, you need to have your gays revisit your eye makeup. The heavy liner and clumpy lashes are actually making your eyes look tiny and are aging you. Less is more in this area.

    • Contralto

She’s starting to look like Dolly Parton, and not in a good way.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=571205045 Kent Roby

Since this is just pure costume, I can’t find fault with any of it, even the hair. Killer stillettos and lamé gloves would’ve worked (since we will apparently never see Madge’s hands again), but at least she was having fun.

      • fursa_saida

I agree, I dig the hair here–it’s 40s pin-up enough to go along with “lady in uniform and red lipstick” thing that’s happening. I can’t think of another hairstyle that would go better without severely turning down the glam factor.

    • Anathema_Device

Yes! A nudge and wink is what made Madonna fun to begin with, and I was never the biggest fan of her work. (I did, however, admire her hard work, hustle, and ambition.)

    • formerlyAnon

As someone else with aging hands, I wish she could single-handedly make the gloves “a thing” rather than an affectation that (however she actually means it) makes her look like a middle aged woman trying desperately to hide the signs of aging. But, she can’t.

I’ll give everything else a pass in honor of the principled and cheeky Boy Scout reference and in honor of her having maintained a body that is still trim in a boy scout uniform and still capable of of a lengthy and physical stage show.

    • teensmom99

First thought was Temple Grandin. 2nd thought was Nancy Kulp in the Parent Trap–sadly I can’t find any pictures to illustrate that point.

      • Imasewsure

For any one who knows the great Nancy Kulp, we need no pictures… she’s in our heads forever!! Definitely see it here too. So funny…

        • alyce1213

LOVE HUH. I do believe she is the original Jane Lynch.

          • teensmom99

Just was worried that some of the kittens might be a tad young and might only think LiLo when they hear the words: Parent Trap.

          • Imasewsure

I would love to see Jane Lynch do an updated version of Miss Jane Hathaway!! Hilarious

            • formerlyAnon

OMG. THIS would be worth another Beverly Hilbillies remake for. I imagine her doing a 21st century take on Miss Hathaway: just as competent-and-even-more-in-charge, as well as a good bit more sardonic.

    • mozzer0906

Madge needs to just say no to the plastic surgery, she is starting to look too much like a lion in her face.

    • Laylalola

I keep seeing her cast as the mother to the Olsen twins in some sort of bizarro mashup of Sunset Boulevard and Whatever happened to Baby Jane.

    • http://twitter.com/thejackanory Charles

I’m Irish and I got the reference. The gloves, hair, and drag level of makeup really need to be toned down or deployed more selectively at least.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000088447181 Sam Smith

Madonna, clinging to your youth is undermining your awesomeness. Its really just looking sad these days.

      • e jerry powell

        Not what she’s doing…

I actually thought this was an old picture of Betty Hutton in “ANNIE GET YOUR GUN”
      !

      • Imasewsure

Oh my god. You are right! I was thinking Lana Turner but it’s pure Betty here. Great call!

    • f_yeah_marie

      Her face, though…

    • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

its cheeky and fun. something she hasnt been for a while now. how refreshing!

    • Imasewsure

Love her for this. Gloves are fine for me here although hopefully she’ll ditch them going forward. Hair is pure Lana Turner (which isn’t good since Lana kept it going for too long too). Still major props to Queen Madge!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=795138743 Melody McFarland

She doesn’t look too bad. She’s verging on plastic face though – teetering just a hair’s breadth on the edge. One more procedure will push her over.

    • Beardslee

My first thought, as a Philadelphia area person, was “Sally Starr!”

    • unbornfawn

I GET the boy scout reference. With the hair and accessory choices she looks like a cartoon of herself.

    • Rrroza

I love that she did this.
I have a question: Why are the whites of her eyes always pink?

    • http://twitter.com/sofi0518 Sofia Lopez Garcia

This is very Shelley Long from Troop Beverly Hills….

      • e jerry powell

You’re not wrong, but again, not the point of what she’s doing.

        • http://twitter.com/sofi0518 Sofia Lopez Garcia

No I totally get what she is doing. It’s just the image that came to mind when I first saw her…

          • e jerry powell

And it is quite an image…
            :-)

    • aahlife

Glad to see her face altering jag has calmed to reasonable proportions. The best thing she did was remove her extreme cheekbone implants and replace them with more natural looking ones.

And her uniform is a fun way to make an important point.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1208138556 Sara Munoz Munoz

Eh, I’m over it. There are many scouting organizations out there who support everyone (Navigators, CampFire USA, among others). I would so much rather see attention being brought to those groups who are ALREADY doing it right. Rather than forcing bigots to “accept” gays. I’m glad Boy Scouts is getting called out for their attitudes (they don’t allow atheists either), and I don’t think they should be able to receive public funds and meeting places as long as they discriminate.
BUT I can’t say I support putting pressure on them to change.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1208138556 Sara Munoz Munoz

…. or might this be deleted for being political? Oh well…

    • MichaelStrangeways

      Really?

This is cringeworthy…she’s teetering into the land of the ridiculous.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I like what she’s doing here. My only argument (other than the hair) is whether she couldn’t have found gloves more in keeping with the boy scout theme. It’s not like she’s going to quit wearing them anytime soon…

    • capybara_cafe

That’s hilarious! But I almost didn’t recognize her. Her eyes look very strange…maybe it’s the fake lashes?

    • peachy

seriously? i thought gay v. bsa had made it to every corner of the globe. wow.

and yes, the fingerless gloves should be pried off of those aged claws immediately.

    • PrunellaV

This is the Madonna I know and love. Except I can’t help cringing at what she’s done to her face. She’s too young to be in “Mae West in the 70s” territory.

QUEEN M is so beyond fashion…she is the one and only ..no one comes close to her…….she is amazing…..worship this woman

    • mhleta

She’s turning into Ethel Merman. And Opie, (from Andy Griffith, not Sons of Anarchy. Although, with a beard?)

    • toobusy

First of all its a Cub Scout uniform she is wearing, not Boy Scout. There is a difference, she is wearing the equivalent of a 9 year old boy’s uniform, incorrectly with all the patches as a matter of fact.

    • Chrissie Curran

Material Girl was very 80’s and the 80″s are definitely back in a big, bad (very, very, very bad) way.

    • guest2visits

Madonna squeezes my heart. Yes she needs to discover that she’s allowed to get older and it’s as difficult and as natural as it is for anyone to do. I love the fun she is having with the whole look here.
