Lily Collins Double Shot

Posted on March 07, 2013

We’ve all been there, darlings. You get a certain trend or look stuck in your craw and you just can’t shake it until you’ve literally worn it out. Next thing you know, all your outfits are royal blue, or you just can’t leave the house without a pair of booties on, or you become briefly obsessed with polka dots. For us, it was plaid. We actually had to make an effort not to pack any plaid with us the last time we went to Fashion Week because, looking at our wardrobes, we realized we’d worn plaid pretty much every single day of the previous Fashion Week. Not wanting to be known as “those two guys who always wear plaid” we forced ourselves into stripes and solids and had a lovely time of it.

Which isn’t to say you shouldn’t let your obsession just play itself out. Lily is clearly having a particular moment and to be honest, we don’t mind it in the slightest.

Look at how styling can radically alter the feel of an outfit. Sure, the dresses aren’t all that similar in shape and texture, but someone did the work to make sure each look was as distinct as possible. Even better, the styling is exactly right for each dress. Accessorized and dolled-up for the first one; free and easy for the second one. Nicely done.

That first dress is veering into tunic territory due to the length, but at least she (or her stylist) had the good sense to pair it with opaque tights. Also, I want her eyebrows.

  • Kathy_Marlow

I have no problem with either look, I know how I am about certain designers and will buy more than one item from a collection/season (welll….the downlabel stuff you find at the mall, but you get my drift).  She looks great!

  • Clearly, her taupe and black phase is working for her. She looks terrific in both outfits.

  • Annabelle Archer

    She looks great, in both.

And ok, I’m just going to say it, I am all for a natural brow, I am, but I really need her to take the inner corners down just a smidge.  She is dangerously close to unibrow territory and nobody wants that.

    • MilaXX

As someone who had their inner corners jacked up by an over zealous waxer, I think her brows are fine.

      • Annabelle Archer

I hate an over zealous waxer! I have full brows myself, I just want them tamed and shaped, not thinned and minimized.  I think she is truly lovely and am not attempting to body (face) shame in any way. (Not that I thought you were accusing me of such)

        • MilaXX

I hate trying to explain I like my brows full. I’m nearing the end of a month long grow in. Gonna stop getting them done at nail shop & spend the extra cash at Anastasia’s. One corner isn’t growing back.

          •  Take it from someone who’s been plucking eyebrows since the 1970’s–eventually, they stop growing altogether. Only pluck what you know you’ll never want again.

          • Elaine Lang

No kidding.   I got overzealous in the middle zone (Fear of Unibrow) back in the early 80s…and recently my waxer told me to let the grow back in a bit.   The hair did come back in, albeit thinly….BUT IT WAS PURE WHITE AND STUCK STRAIGHT OUT.

Moral of the story:  When defoliating, err on the side of caution.

          • MilaXX

Oh I know! My brows are not nearly as full as the once were which is why I need to be pickier with waxers.

      • JasmineAM

I am green with envy from her brows. Mine are full, but not like that. They are beautiful!

    • Sobaika

Really? I loooooove hers. But I’m very partial to strong brows.

      • SassieCassy

me too. her doppelganger camilla belle also has good eyebrows

    • I agree. I have strong brows and I love them, but I think she would benefit from increasing the gap between the two ever so slightly. She is a beautiful girl, but they are distracting.

      • Annabelle Archer

Just the teensiest bit, right?  Not much at all, just enough to make sure there are TWO fabulously full eye frames.

      •  I agree with you both… I LOVE a strong brow, but just the teeeeensiest bit of shaping would be perfect. I don’t even think she needs waxing, just a aesthetician who knows how to tweeze a TINY bit.

    • I had the same thought… just a tiny bit more separation b/w the brows would look better, but stills he looks great!

    • wildemoose

As someone with full brows, who has never had any success explaining to waxers that I like them full, just controlled, I agree with this. Just taken in a morsel so that the eyebrow is not actually growing on the bridge of the nose.

    • Celandine1

Halfway through Mirror Mirror I actually could not stand to look at her any longer. I am certainly not an advocate of waxing or grooming brows to meet ridiculous fads but she is a celebrity and she needs to clean that up a bit. Also it looks like she had the ends oddly shaped and narrowed so the ends don’t match the rest of the brow!

      • DonnaL

The outer ends are so much thinner than the rest that they look kind of like handles on a comb.

      • Mistie Holler

Oh, I think that’s natural. Mine do that too, much to my annoyance. Or, to be exact, my LEFT eyeborw does tht, too. Which is even more annoying.

  • JLH

She looks incredible, and you’re dead on about the styling. And I love love LOVE that she rocks her fierce, full eyebrows. Too many years growing up with fuller eyebrows surrounded by thin, overplucked arches. Rock on, Lily.

  • SewingSiren

I think she looks good in just about anything. That is one beautiful girl.

  • MilaXX

She looks adorable in both pictures.

  • ankali

She looks like a young PJ Harvey in that first set of photos. Which set I prefer, actually; she’s got the face to take dramatic makeup and severe hair, which not so many others can pull off.

    • ceceliadid

I see some Rooney Mara, but less icy.

      • mshesterp

2nd from the bottom I’m getting a Victoria Beckham vibe.  But, you know, smile-ier.

        • ceceliadid

I’d say territory of smile-y Audreybot is now TAKEN.

    • Really? she looks pretty but all I see is make up make up make up.

      • ankali

        Yes, really. 😛

  • Whever

With the first outfit, I’m suddenly seeing potential if they ever decide to make an Audrey Hepburn biopic…

    • mellbell

She couldn’t be any worse than Jennifer Love Hewitt.

  • Monday1900

Her hair in the first set of photos is ghastly–all I can think of is how much pain she must be in having it pulled back so much.  I like the first dress more than the second.  Also, that’s a lot of makeup on that girl!

  • zenobar

She really does look lovely, and both outfits are beautiful.  However a Tim Gunn quote springs to mind:  “If you have to ask if a clothing item is a dress or a top, it’s always a top.”

  • butterflysunita

Both outfits are adorable.  And I love how different she looks in each set of photos–nicely done.

  • kimmeister

She is a rare one who can pull off a bun right on top of her head without looking silly.

The glasses frames the model has on in the 2nd LV pic are super cute.

  • aeb1986

Wait, LV makes clothes that AREN’T black and white checkered??? Who woulda thought. Sarcastic comment aside, she looks fabulous in both shots. Great styling and makeup

  • thesevenendless

She’s lost way too much weight; she’s all angles and brows in her face without any of the fullness she used to have.

  • lrhg

Wow, she looks 5 years older in the second outfit (not in a bad or aging way, just in a more mature way).

I way prefer the second look, it’s much more my style, but I think she did great with both.

  • Rand Ortega

I hope she’s the next face of Louis Vuitton. She would send the brand in such a young, fresh direction.
    Are you listening, Marc Jacobs?
She’s a total cutie, but I just can’t shake the idea her eyebrows want to eat me. Or become butterflies.

  • i love the bag in both looks!

  • mmc2315

    Love the full eyebrows!

  • Right? It makes the clothes look like they were made for her.

  • Alyssa

Love both looks. Perfectly styled for each dress. I like that her is down & looks to be completely natural…I get so tired of all the extensions celebrities are always wearing.

  • Trisha26

She is adorable! The length of the first look would ordinarily bother me but the black tights & black shoes are perfect. I HATE the exposed zipper. Is that going away any time soon? Love the second look.

  • She looks adorable. Love the first outfit!

  • crash1212

She’s cute and I love both outfits. I wonder if the blonde woman in the background with the ankle tattoo is Lily’s official “handler”, mother, witty Auntie?

    • AmeliaEve

I couldn’t stop looking at her either. Couldn’t they spare a tiny bit of hair gel for the entourage?

  • nannypoo

    Fabulous both times.

  • libraangel

“dolled up” the first one: more like a Kewpie doll on acid. Second better, but how did that seaweed get on the dress?

  • She’s perfectly suited to both looks, good for her.

  • H3ff

Love both looks, but I think wearing her hair down suits her better. Girl looks like Michelle Dockery’s younger sister.

  • I actually build my wardrobe around those obsession — I pick 3 colors a season along with a print type (stripes, for instance) and everything I buy is in that family except for basics like black pants or jeans.  It looks really repetitive until I get it home and put it away, where it mixes in with everything I already had, and it ensures I ALWAYS have something that works with any one specific piece.

  • PeaceBang

Oh my gosh, what a life. She looks elegant and adorable. The little model with the bowl cut and the glasses is slaying me. Loving this Vuitton.

    • Beverly Kozma

She’s a very fancy alien, in a good way. (I’m talking about the model.)

  • BrooklynBomber

Both look great. The first one has one of my pet peeves (skirt taking up less vertical space than top) and I still think it looks great.

  • I love both of these looks SO MUCH. That first dress is Dress Perfection.

  • Zippypie

She’s so painfully skinny in both.  This looks unhealthy.

    • Anniebet

Uh, I don’t see that at all. Her arms and lower legs have some roundness to them. She looks like a healthy young woman to me.

  • snarkykitten

that is one fancy lookin’ burlap sack

  • what a pretty girl

  • kathrineb

First look is fun. In the second look she reminds me a lot of Catherine duchess of Cambridge.

  • kikisayshi

    The first dress is supercute.

  • norseofcourse

Reminds me of when I was her age and went through my Louis Vuitton phase. Wait, no, it wasn’t Louis Vuitton; is was …. um …. stirrup pants. Yep, that’s right! My phase was definitely stirrup pants!

  • i thought the first look was good, but the second look totally knocks it out of the park.

  • libraangel

EEKKK! Vampire make-up in the first photo! And what is with the werewolf eyebrows!

  • decormaven

That second outfit is especially nice on her. Well played!

  • She is just astonishingly beautiful.
J’adore the styling for the first dress–it’s adorable without veering into twee.

(And? Why wasn’t Ms. Collins cast for the part of Elizabeth Taylor in “Liz & Dick”?)
