Kirsten Dunst in Proenza Schouler

Posted on March 13, 2013

Why Miss Kirsten. You look downright sophisticated.

Kirsten Dunst attends the premiere of ‘Upside Down’ hosted by Quintessentially in Hollywood, California in a Proenza Schouler black asymmetrical dress accessorized with a Stella McCartney clutch, Christian Dior jewelry, and Proenza Schouler pumps.

Proenza Schouler Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Sasha Luss

Proenza Schouler’s always been hit-or-miss with us; mostly miss. We can appreciate the thinking behind their designs – in fact, they strike us as two of the more intellectual designers working in America. But the downside to that is, a lot of their clothes look like complicated math problems in dress form. Our main gripe is that their stuff tends toward being overdesigned and overthought. We would say roughly the same thing about that runway look, but Kirsten’s version is stripped down, simplified, and far more chic, to our eyes.

We’re not in love with the shoes and we question whether those earrings were the right choice. Just because everything can go with black doesn’t mean everything should go with it. Still, we think the overall look is high-impact and sophisticated.

Gorgeous! Amazing how much more wearable this version is than the messy runway design.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I think the runway version is horrible!

        • theblondette

Agreed! That thing be ugleeeeeh. It reminds me of when I used to dress up by dragging out bits of fabric from my Nana’s box of stuff and tie them around myself fetchingly.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

She looks great! The plain black is so much nicer than the runway print. I think she’s tried a bit too hard to cinch it at the waist, so it has a bit of a funny line at the back, but I think this is getting close to a WERQ. The earrings look like fimo though.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Very nice over all.  But Damn their eyes, can’t they put her in front of something that isn’t black? Kinda luv the shoes, too bad they are a size too big.

      • JosephLamour

I like the outfit too. However… has anyone seen this Upside Down movie? I’m not exaggerating when I say it is literally (old definition, not new) the worst movie I have ever seen in my ENTIRE life. I’m not kidding.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I’ve really heard nothing about it. So I will take your advice and avoid it, should I come across it.

          • JosephLamour

It’s actually so bad, you *should* watch it. LOL

            • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

               Mkay,…if you say so.
              (I think I’m scared a little)

            • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I haven’t heard anything about it, either. Now that you say it’s horrible, I have this awful wish to see it!

        • DeborahJozayt

My husband and I watched the trailer a while back and laughed so hard at the inconsistencies of the storyline. Even the poster is kinda wrong; if one world is rich, and the other is poor or does layman’s work, why are both sides working in cubicles? Wouldn’t the rich side be nothing but CEO offices with executive bathrooms? The concept of gravity is all wrong; if the poor guy was on the other planet, why would he need boots to stay there? Why did Dunst fall the wrong way on her way to her poor boyfriend’s planet? And the buildup of falling in love seems contrived. They’re in beautiful scenes frolicking together. They must be in love! Dunst is upside down loving up on her boyfriend. Spiderman reference-totally get it!

So ya. Lame. At least Looper built up from its sci-fi premise to be something more than just an implausible storyline. This can’t even get past the start.

      • 3boysful

I like them, too, but the beige toe and the black and WHITE clutch makes my eyes twitch.

        • http://profile.yahoo.com/BJTY6KY7LOR7MDOD6QCZUC3VVI Donna Tabor

I think the toe is actually yellow. Which harks back to the earrings.

    • Anniebet

She’s glowing, and no wonder…the outfit is glam, the fit is fabulous, makeup and hair pretty darned spiffy. I even adore the earrings. But, those shoes could crawl in a hole right now and never again see the light of day and it would be too soon for me.

      • lizajane1776

I despise those heels! And any heel that leans inward. Seems so unstable.

        • JosephLamour

I like what they look like… but I don’t wear heels either. LOL.

        • kimmeister

Agreed - they look like tapir snouts.

      • kimmeister

They make her feet look like they’re weirdly shaped, when I’m sure they’re perfectly normal feet.

    • RocknRollmom

I adore the dress.  I, like TLo, find Rodarte interesting but usually unwearable in the real world.  This dress is stunning.  The neckline is a bit high for me personally (and isn’t that all that matters), but it is a stunning, interesting dress.  The black allows you to appreciate the construction and design rather than the runway version which is way way too distracting and leaves me with a neck crick as I turn my head sidewise and think “WTF”.  I personally adore the shoes but acknowledge that they are likely only on a RC with certain type of feet (again it is all about me and what I could wear), not mine.  I even, Heaven forefend, like the McCartney clutch.  One of the best looks I have seen Dunst wear.  I think she is going to age in a particularly beautiful woman.  Yes she is lovely now but I think sophisticated looks like this will add a dimension not previously seen.

    • Diego!

I think she looks amazing. I love this look on her. You go Kirsten! :D

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I wished the background weren’t black, since the dress is blending in, in most shots.  I think I might not hate the shoes if they weren’t so highly contrasted with all the darkness and bad lighting. From what I can see, I love the dress. She has really cleaned up her fashion act the last few years.

    • RocknRollmom

Ok, I am confused.  Just went back.  Caption says Proenza Schouler and then references Rodarte in the critical paragraph.  My comments re Rodarte stand.  Would agree at times with PS as well.  Also, Hate the earrings.  Are those Fish?

      • http://twitter.com/JapaneseTrash Japanese Trash

Was wondering the same thing: PS or Rodarte?

        • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

Sorry! Brain fart. We fixed it.

          • http://profile.yahoo.com/BJTY6KY7LOR7MDOD6QCZUC3VVI Donna Tabor

Poor brain, having to keep all these goofy designers straight.

      • http://twitter.com/hugandpint Courtenay P

yeah the dress is Proenza Schouler. no Rodarte that I can see.

    • charlotte

She looks polished! Hate the shoes.

    • SugarSnap108

She looks really good.  I think I like the shoes, but maybe not with this dress.  And yeah, the earrings are a mistake — It looks like she hit the sale at Earrings Plaza.

      • BKagainwiththesweatpants

Exactly! I was gonna say Claire’s bargain tray or a friend made them for her in her Easy Bake Oven. The shoes are to die, and I love the model’s shoes as well. Can’t really make out the dress. But Kiki looks healthy and that is good. There was a time when she looked close to death’s door.

        • SugarSnap108

Oh, how could I forget Claire’s!  I worked there in high school.

    • VioletFem

My thoughts exactly (although I like the earrings), this is a very chic outfit.

    • Sobaika

Wrong shoes, but she looks gorgeous.

    • ringthing

I dislike most of Stella’s clothes but she does some great accessories. Love that clutch.

    • MilaXX

I like the earrings even if they clash a bit with the bag. It makes for a nice headshot with the hair and makeup & also keeps the all black ensemble from feeling too funeral. Shes are odd, but work with the outfit.

      • kimmeister

My thoughts exactly – I like the clutch, I like the earrings, but they do not belong in the same outfit.

    • TRSTL

Think she looks great here, very chic.  But I hate those shoes….. love the clutch!

    • Annabelle Archer

      Kicky Kiki, I like it.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I always laugh when she is referred to as “Kiki”.  When I was a toddler, that is what I referred to as poop.  “MAAAA, GOTTA TAKE A KIKI!!!”

        • Annabelle Archer

          That’s too funny.

I have a terrible habit of using pet names for people.  Sometimes as a passive aggressive dig, but usually as a term of endearment.  It’s my Southern way.

BTW, I’ve been meaning to tell you how much I love your Username.  What *does* Anna Wintour smell like, I wonder?

          • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Well, whatever Anna Wintour smells like, I’m sure it’s not “kiki”, lol.  I imagine something more floral mixed with the tears of interns gone by.

    • BrooklynBomber

I like Kirsten Dunst (I still remember an amazing vintage Chanel dress she wore to the Oscars several years ago), but this look does her no favors.  The hair is blah, the dress is bleah, the shoes (though not quite as ugly as Ruth-Ellen’s) are very ugly, and the earrings, well, they belong to Ruth-Ellen.

      • charlotte

See, and I think her hair looks gorgeous. Almost in Claire Danes territory.

        • BrooklynBomber

I guess I like her hair shorter.

    • carolie_king

I am not a Kirsten fan, but she looks great here.  I think those earrings were in the box of costume jewelry I used to play with at my grandma’s house.

      • Indigo54

HA!  Grandma’s jewelry box.  I thought the same thing.

    • decormaven

I recognize the belt from the runway look, but that’s it. Nice sophisticated look for her, though. Demerits for the Shrinky Dink earrings, but bonus points for the killer clutch.

    • EEKstl

Lovely!  And the shoes are working in my eyes – it’s that “early spring” time when you want to start incorporating lighter colors, this is a good balance. I would have done different earrings, tho.

    • Indigo54

Very nice dress!   Shoes look evil and uncomfortable.  Earrings remind me of a lantana flower. Not good.

    • OrigamiRose

She looks amazing, and I do love the shoes (I’m a shoegal).  I really hope she can get her career rolling, she has so much to offer.

    • lrober03

Love all the accessories individually, but as a group I wish they were more coherent

    • CCAdams

I like this outfit on Ms Dunst.

However, I really think in her case, with those Proenzia Schouler pumps, the fit is not perfect and her feet would have looked better had she worn hose,

      • l_c_ann

I don’t think a perfect fit is possible with those pumps short of amputations on mutiple toes on both feet.  Those bright triangles just look silly.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I like this a lot! The shoes don’t bother me – in fact, they’re fairly nice.  LOVE the clutch! And the outfit looks really polished on her.  Good job!

    • quiltrx

      That’s a KILLA clutch!

    • nancylee61

It would have been nice if she had washed or brushed her hair. Looks dirty.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

      WERQ.

    • rhl25

      Toe cleavage!

    • stubbornthoughts

This is a total WERQ for me. That whole dress being black masks all that mumbo-jumbo design. She looks fierce as hell.

    • Kathy_Marlow

      That clutch is to DIE

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I really, really like this on her. Not a fan of the earrings, but I like everything else, including the shoes.

    • bertkeeter

So they take an unflattering “editorial look” and re-fabricate into a simple, attractive and understated version. Hey, I guess they are talented!

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

I covet those earrings. I don’t like the pastel yellow shoes. Cute clutch.
I feel like a lot of the interest of the dress was lost by making it a matte black. But that’s me. I really like Proenza Schouler and I tend towards overdone in my everyday apparel. It’s still a very nice LBD.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000905542323 Rhonda Shore

      the shoes look highly uncomfy…

    • libraangel

Yeh, Kirsten! You finally got it right! Lovely

    • Imasewsure

Love the look, hate the shoes… hopefully she’ll wear the earrings another time since they are cute but don’t work here

    • E. D.

      Love all of it.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

      Love the clutch!

    • http://www.domesticdisturbia.com/ Christi Wampler

Man, she looks OLD. Puffy face, much?

      • Susan Carley Oliver

Ah, the audacity of the aging process!

Since face puffiness is a natural response for some to this process, what would you suggest she and/or her stylist do differently?

    • alyce1213

It’s too bad the details can’t be seen in the black version.  It is much nicer than the runway mix.
I sort of love the shoes to look at, but they can’t be easy to wear (and of course these are too large for her).

    • judybrowni

Looks like she also got rid of the asymmetrical waist flap, too.

But who in their right mind would wear an asymmetrical waist flap, besides a runway model?

My mom would scold both, however, “Get your hair out of your face!”

    • http://twitter.com/kendallbrunson SassyMcFrench

The shoes don’t quite work. They yellow toe and the white in the purse just don’t work well together. The rest is gorgeous.

    • Jessi03

She looks beautiful!  Way to go, Miss K!

    • http://twitter.com/ThisMersLife ThisMeredithianLife

Kirsten’s my girl, she can kind of do no wrong in my mind, at least fashion-wise. She’s just too adorable.

    • http://twitter.com/lisledanielle Danielle Lisle

I’d say this is a Personal Best for Kiki, save for those LV pajamas she wore a while back.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I love every single thing about this look. I know you didn’t care for them, but those shoes aren’t merely fierce, they’re bad ass!

    • SHAHRAM REJVANI

you are soooooo wrong..she looks perfection…head to toe

    • kikisayshi

Love this. Even the earrings. ;)

    • melanie0866

I love the shoes.  I think they make it, in fact.

    • shelley514

Nicely down Kirsten.  Good luck walking in those killer heels though.

    • guest2visits

So pretty. I actually like both dresses (except not so much the strange color of the skirt for the model).
