Katy Perry in Hervé Léger by Max Azria

Posted on March 25, 2013

It really says something about Katy Perry that we can look at her in a wild print and glorified bra and say, “What’s wrong with Katy? She looks so subdued. Is she depressed?”

Katy Perry attends the 2013 Kids’ Choice Awards in a Hervé Léger by Max Azria dress accessorized with an Anita Ko bracelet, a Melinda Maria nailhead ‘Heart+Arrow’ bangle, Nikki Baker yellow gold and diamond hoop earrings, EF Collection stud earrings, and Christian Louboutin pumps.

Hervé Léger by Max Azria Pre-Fall 2013 Collection

This is a look that says “I decided at the last ten minutes to get up off the couch, brush off the Cheetoh’s dust, and head out to hear what the Choices of The Kids might be this year. I just threw this on. Kids love tits, right?”

To be fair, she looks pretty good. It’s just that it has none of that Katy oomph and sense of fun. It’s just “Here’s some wild, swirling colors. And my tits.” The pumps are nice, but again; somewhat disapointingly standard.

If you think we’re being hard on her (and we admit, we are, because she looks just fine), you should know we have a secret rating scale for Katy Perry outfits. We rate it based on a measurement known only to us as the Smurfette. Basically, nothing ever topped the Smurfette dress for pure Perry perfection. For us, she never really approached that combination of funny, campy, fabulous and sexy all in one outfit. So we can say that the original Smurfette dress equals 5 Smurfettes, because it’s perfect. This getup? 1.5 Smurfettes on the fun scale. She could’ve at least dyed her hair chartreuse or something.

If you compare her version to the one on the model, she should get at least an extra .5 on the Smurfette scale. A stained glass Rorschach test down your front is way better than a two-tone.

I feel like she’s the only one who could make me like a bra and pencil skirt as an outfit.

I remember the Smurfette post, it’s legendary.

      • jtabz

Legendary, indeed! Seeing that outfit marked the moment when Ms. Perry moved from my irrational celebrity hate list to my equally irrational celebrity appreciation list.

      • sweetestsith

There is something a bit magical about her that makes me look at these and say “man, I wish I could rock that look!”

Smurfette dress is legendary. I still love every (tiny) inch of it!

    • eowyn_of_rohan

The second-to-last pic is like a cartoon panel with her hair flying around and the attempt at an evil/seductive smolder.

      • mhleta

Yes. Not sure if she can act, but she’d make a wonderful super-villainess! For her evil super-power she could sing and make people curl into a ball, screaming “PLEASE, GOD, NO! THE MAKE THE SCREAMING SEALS STOP!”

      • H3ff

I actually love her HAIRFLIP OF DOOM.

    • thecitysleeps

Not very fun on the Smurfette scale, but she looks downright divine really!

    • Susan Collier

Insect sports bra and matching tube skirt. Girl is always so matchy. Remember Grananimals? It’s like that except for slightly-slutty starlets.

    • newleaf1

It is cute on her, and I like that the skirt is high waisted, which offsets the bathing suit top, but for her, yes, this is subdued.

    • mhleta

Boy, a little color on the lips would have done wonders for this. Take that nude lip to the curb along with the matching silly putty pumps from the past year. The skirt is doing fantastic things for her caboose, though squashing her poor boobs a bit. I like the version on the model much better.

    • ecksor

Dress, that’s not your girl! The girl looks fine, but the dress could do much better. The top needs to be more of a bralette than a bra.

    • formerlyAnon

I say nothing wrong with the clothes. It’s her hair that lacks oomph. It needs better styling if it’s in a color that’s plausible as being her own home-grown.

      • Meg0GayGuys6

I completely agree… I think the dress is fine, but the hair? eh.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1208138556 Sara Munoz Munoz

The googly eyes on her nails are cute.

    • http://twitter.com/Efuntayo01 Efuntayo Awoyade

I think she kept it sort of minimal (for her) because she expected to be “slimed.” When she made it to the podium, she seemed to be almost waiting for it and looked a little disappointed that she was able to walk away clean. :-)

    • Tamara Hogan

I for one appreciate it when she drops her ‘caricature of femininity’ schtick and looks like a real woman. I think she looks awesome.

    • blueberrypanckae

I actually think it is spot on appropriate for the event. It is still “her” but toned down for the childrens. The hair does kinda look like an afterthought .

    • bookish

I love the colors, though, and the skirt is genuinely pretty.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sharon-ORourke-Frenz/1051519096 Sharon O’Rourke Frenz

      Love, love her nails…

    • MoHub

The whole thing reads a printed version of 1950s underwear, but with the girdle elongated to knee length. My mother’s underpinnings looked a lot like that.

    • nannypoo

Her makeup is boring, too. Is our little girl growing up? I hope not.

    • siriuslover

But the cookie monster nails are kinda awesome, boys.

    • BaddestMotherEver

For the love of boobs…go up a size in that top!

    • MilaXX

lol I know what you mean. Considering this is the Kid’s Choice Awards, and this Katy Perry we’re talking about, it looks a bit under done and oddly normal. She’d even wearing her own hair and regular earrings! What’s the world coming to?

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

she needs to rupaulogize for not being fabulous.

    • DominoEstella

I think she looks cute and I can say from experience that these Herve’ Leger get ups are so damned comfortable and flattering she must feel like a million bucks.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I like it better with the zip at the back, instead of the way it is on the model. I think she looks fine but her face says her mind is elsewhere.

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Agree. The exposed-zipper-trend needs to die, so I appreciate that she (her stylist) had the sense to at least turn the skirt around.

        • l_c_ann

          Or…wearing the skirt backwards.

Only works when the skirt is mostly spandex and does whatever it’s told to.

      • AnaRoW

I think I heard that she and John Mayer broke up again and she’s not very good at hiding her emotions.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I like this. It’s downright demure for her, but I like the silhouette, and the print is interesting. And only Katy Perry can make a midriff-baring dress (somewhat) OK.

    • crash1212

I think she deserves at least another half Smurfette just because everything fits perfectly. She looks good, but nothing tops Smurfette.

    • hillmad

I still think she’s never seemed the same since she and Russell split up!

    • Janet B

I think she needs a stronger lip color, in general, and definitely here.

Off-topic Disqus just notified me of a reply from 8 months ago. Weird.

      • MoHub

Eight months? I think that’s a record. I have noticed that for the last month or so, the notifications have been coming long after the responses have been posted.

        • Janet B

I couldn’t believe it so I triple checked(!) just to be sure it wasn’t a recent response to an old comment. Apparently I don’t have anything better to do today.

    • Lolo Andre

BTW she changed her stylist recently that’s why the change in her looks to more “mature” ones. She got Kristen Stewart’s stylist

    • OrigamiRose

I love the print as it looks on the model, and I don’t mean that as a slam against Perry. Something about it doesn’t seem to fit as well on her, and I don’t think it could be her and her 0% body fat. Just maybe it was a bit too nipped and tucked on the model in a way that would never work if you really had to walk and sit in it?

    • libraangel

Another who can do wrong in my book, although wish she had used a stronger lip color.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

She should really just be wearing The Blonds’ clothing, all the time. Pity nothing in that most recent collection was really appropriate for the Kids Choice Awards, what with all the blood and gore. Maybe the knife dress.

    • Indigo54

Cute outfit. Wish she’d chosen a funkier shoe tho.

    • Little_Olive

I agree, if someone can make this work, it’s Katy. Even if her vajayjay has eyes.

Half-assed styling though (hello, those bracelets?), so not IN-worthy.

      • http://twitter.com/kerryev kerryev

        Her nails have eyes too.

    • marilyn

That is what she wears to an awards show for childrens’ television? I hope there were no kids there. It would be very nice if she dropped the pseudo-Lady Gaga wardrobe and focused on her singing. She has a good voice. Maybe she ought to get serious about that.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sauchih Sau-Chih Feng

That second to last picture is comic book super heroine fierce.

    • warnerave

      outfit works for her!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1266410766 Phyllis Craine

I like this outfit and Katy loooks good with both dark and light hair. I do think her Smurfette hairstyle is prettier and would look great with this look and her current dark hair

    • Qitkat

Putting aside my incomprehension of the decision that it’s a good thing to wear a butterfly print bra and bare midriff to the KIDS Choice Awards, I think she looks great. The print is gorgeous.
      .5 Smurfette rating.

    • http://twitter.com/DarthJaeda Jaeda Laurez

I prefer Beyonce in this dress (she did it for Shape magazine), but Katy looks really good in it too. It’s just not…outlandish enough. She really looks happiest when she’s wearing pink and purple and really costume-y stuff.

    • jetpackdino

She looks good– that skirt is serving it up and dishing it out– but she seems sad. Big hugs to you and your beautiful and talented self, Miss Katy.

    • http://www.facebook.com/ann.verwiebe Ann VerWiebe

She’s taking the break-up with John Mayer harder than I expected. Her make-up looks so normal!

    • Trisha26

The bra top/cleavage thing for this awards show just makes me laugh.

    • Kimbolina

The outfit works for her but the hair just seems kind of sad.

    • j_anson

Aw. I like this on her. Sometimes a girl wants to dress in something that’s a little more sleek and subdued. This is the Katy Perry version of sleek and subdued.

    • MaryAtRealityTea

I just don’t think this is appropriate given the venue. A bra-top and skintight skirt with eff-me pumps and mega cleavage? Really, Katy?

    • ScarlettHarlot

That print & color combo reminds me of the illustrations in Watchmen. That is to say, I like it!

    • http://www.facebook.com/jackie.atkins.31 Jackie Atkins

Don’t get me wrong; I think it’s adorable, if not 5-Smurfette worthy. But…um, are kids today just so used to this skin-baring, boob-emphasizing look that no one else but this old lady thinks this is kinda inappropriate for an event with kids for an audience?

      • formerlyAnon

Rightly or wrongly – if they watch t.v., they’re accustomed. Even if it’s mostly kids’ stuff.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Why are the pumps disappointingly standard on her but OK on Kristin Stewart? I like those shoes on her with the outfit, given how crazy wild the print is. But I too feel disappointed. It falls low on the Smurfette scale indeed.

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

“Why are the pumps disappointingly standard on her but OK on Kristin Stewart?”

Because we’re talking about two different women with entirely different personalities wearing entirely different outfits.

        • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I know I sound thick – and AM thick – but I am confused – what kind of shoes do you think would have worked better on her, given that print? Thanks for edification. I read your page to keep myself sane.

    • Carly Warnock

I think her style is evolving a bit away from the tacky. Sad about it though, because I love her wacky looks, so much so that I dressed up as Katy for Halloween a few years back in blue glittered hot shorts and a tank with giant lollipops glued on the breasts. Oh and blue wig as well.

    • bd73

just the thing to wear to a kids’ event.

    • http://twitter.com/TVcastingcall Reality TV Casting

love it= i think its katy cajjjuh

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

…Am I alone in totally missing her blue hair?

    • guest2visits

She looks fantastic in it; in a bathing suit-lingerie kind of way. It’s almost a little too sexy for the kids, though.

    • http://twitter.com/amndad amanda lynn

awwwww…. now i miss the smurfette dress.

    • Tuneful54

Fitness bra and yoga skirt. Not appropriate. If it were a one-piece dress I would have liked it better.

I wish her the best in hopefully moving on from JM. She deserves better.

    • ccm800

she looks tired, sick or hung-over. All of the above maybe.
