Kate Winslet for Harper’s Bazaar UK

Posted on March 06, 2013

We miss Kate.

We admit, she got on our nerves and lost some points with us back in her Oscar poledancing days (much the same way Miss Hathaway is now getting the brunt of the public’s cranky post-awards season exhaustion today). She did what so many lady stars do when they stake a claim to the statuette: she turned herself into one. We always enjoyed the Kate who’s funny and bawdy and didn’t seem up her own ass so much. The Serious Actress version of Kate left us bored. We thought maybe her surprise marriage to a guy named Rocknroll would ignite some of that old fire, and for all we know, maybe it has, but Mrs. Rocknroll is still working an uber-glam look for British Harper’s:

Kate Winslet covers the April 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK magazine photographed by Alex Lubomirski and styled by Cathy Kasterine.

On learning about herself: “I’ve really learned a great deal about myself, in the last four years in particular. I think I can see more clearly now – about how the pattern of past experiences has shaped who I am, and the characters I have played – and I’m grateful for that.”

On her past experiences shaping her: “I have so much more material to draw on for work – rubble, bricks – and I know I can carry it now.”

Y’know, if this was a couple of years ago, we’d probably bemoan all the perfection on display, but like we said: we miss her. We’ll take it. She does look fabulous, after all.

Gorgeous, head to toe.  Love the hair and the eye~~~

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

She does a good Hitchcock blonde.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Now there is an idea worth expanding on.

      • uprightcitizen

Exactly! I immediately thought “Kim Novak” when I saw the second pic.

        • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I couldn’t decide between Kim Novak and Tippi Hedren!

      • StellaZafella

         Alicia, you win.

Funny and wonderful how the mere 2 words “Hitchcock Blonde” evoke something so right that we know, immediately, what is meant: Beauty, vulnerability and intelligence encompassed in a brittle shell of intrigue… A masterful little moniker that Tippy, Kim, etal (AND Kate here) should wear proudly.

I think I would have loved it if I could have been thought of as “That Hitchcock Blonde” In my younger days.

        • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Oh me too. The slight hint of danger along with the impeccable wardrobe!

      • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

It’s those 50s cat-lashes on the cover that really give that realness!

      • ChaquitaPhilly

But where is Hitchcock when we need him?

    • Sobaika

She looks lovely, even if a bit too primed and poreless.

I do have to point out that her soundbites aren’t as insufferable as some other actors.

      • filmcricket

Not as insufferable, maybe, but they sound just as trite and meaningless, to me. She does look good, though, if still very much unlike herself.

        • halleygee

I agree, she does look lovely and they should leave it at that. I don’t really need to hear her deepest thoughts.

          • berkeleygirl

Honestly, I’ll bet she’d also like to keep her thoughts to herself.  To her great credit, when she’s not working, we rarely see her.  Unlike some other gals around her age, she’s not trying to create a Winslet brand.  I’m willing to believe that, when not making a movie, she actually is looking after her own kids.

What I’ll never forget – and always respect – is that her first wedding reception was held in the local pub.  Just regular pub grub and beer.. That’s my kind of party!

    • Annabelle Archer

Le sigh. I miss her terribly.  Clearly it’s the year of the bleach blonde.  I saw a thumbnail somewhere else and before I could read the caption I thought to myself, Miley looks classy here.

      • kimmeister

Ruh roh!  Meanwhile, I was taken back to Madonna’s Papa don’t Preach video.

    • GorgeousThings

She doesn’t look like herself. It’s like they airbrushed all her personality off the page.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

Yes the last photo in particular. It seems that she broke both her neck and her arm but doesn’t need a cast/brace for either?

    • http://www.facebook.com/CameronETurner Cameron Turner

This is gorgeous! But what is with the hand on the forehead the whole time?

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/BJTY6KY7LOR7MDOD6QCZUC3VVI Donna Tabor

She’s hiding a big zit. Or the mark of the Devil. You choose.

        • Vlasta Bubinka

          Covering her permanently arched brow.

          • Introspective

that eyebrow does serve major Dr. Evil realness. i think she knows it too.

but she does look fierce here.

      • xmixiex

        showin off the jewels

    • Indigo54

Poor thing.  Must have a headache…

    • SewingSiren

Who is this supposed to be? Adele? Marilyn Monroe? I give up.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/BJTY6KY7LOR7MDOD6QCZUC3VVI Donna Tabor

She usually has more badunkadunk. Wonder if it was Photoshopped smaller in that last photo, or if she’s done some serious slimming.

What a glamorous treatment, though. She is lovely.

      • kschwarting

She lost a noticeable amount of weight when she was poledancing for that Oscar.  She also went blonde and–gasp–tan!  It really made me miss the old Kate, who was not only a fabulous actress but kind of a badass about body acceptance and speaking your mind.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1208138556 Sara Munoz Munoz

      Looks fabulous, IS fabulous.

    • MilaXX

Nah, I miss old Kate. This version looks boring.

    • hughman

I immediately thought of the Bert Stern photos of Marilyn Monroe (supposedly her last sitting). The b/w, the hair, the dark dress. It’s a nice tribute and not too copy-cat.

    • lrober03

She looks gorgeous, but each picture is the left side of her face with her hand to her forehead.  BORING

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

      *SIGH.* Love her.

    • Nonmercisansfacon

Such a beautiful woman. I will take any Kate (even generic sounding Kate) over no Kate at all!

    • mjude

i love the photos but it sure doesnt really look like her.

    • Imasewsure

Hopefully she still has her beautiful, slightly fleshy figure somewhere beyond the airbrush here. She looks great (Lana Turner realness?) but there are lots of slender ice queens in Hollywood (ok, most can’t act though)

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1594250515 Kim Brightman

I still remember her perfume commercial for Lancome.  She REALLY looked like she was in love.  What a difference when you get a fantastic actress instead of a generic beauty.

    • ChaCha_70

      Girlfriend has some great eyebrows.

    • deathandthestrawberry

I actually see Kiera Knightly more than Kate here. Nice photos, but I agree with the others, I wouldn’t have recognized her if it weren’t for the captions.

    • Rand Ortega

She could be her own girl group, The Kates. There’s Posh Kate, Bawdy Kate, Poledancing Kate, Glam Kate, Serious Kate…

    • MightyMarshal

I’m sure I’m going to be punched in the face for saying this, but I think she could pull of Marilyn in a bio pic.

    • http://www.lindamerrill.com Linda Merrill

Boring and neutral. She looks like Madonna, Gwen Stefani and any number of other bleach blond women all rolled into one photoshopped display of “perfection”. She was so much more interesting once upon a time with a great smile and beautiful eyes. A black and white photospread with no smiling is not playing to her assets.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=661256074 Mars Tokyo

Weird photoshopping around her jaw and neck.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ginny-Ellsworth/534496198 Ginny Ellsworth

I agree. And what about that weird hand sticking out of her back? Maybe you turn it like a key and she sings.

        • Fordzo

It looks like an 80 year old hand, too!

    • http://twitter.com/kendallbrunson SassyMcFrench

      That cover is FIERCE!

    • ankali

Could someone please explain to me how to get such a perfect cat-eye, even over the crease? Mine always jog a bit at the crease, and when I try to fill in the the jogged part, I end up looking like someone punched me in the corner of my eye. Not the whole eye, just the corner.

      • Fordzo

        Download photoshop…take a photo of yourself…

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Why isn’t she playing Princess Grace instead of Nicole Kidman?

    • Pants_are_a_must

She’s gorgeous, but oh, I miss the old Kate in the quotes. This is Katebot still.

    • jmorino08

The way her face is lit in those first two shots, it almost looks like a bad photoshop job. Still, she looks gorgeous!

    • decormaven

So smoothed out, no character is left.

    • handsomegrad

She looks more like Scarlett Johanson than Kate Winslet.

    • Anniebet

So the bottom “dress” comes embellished with a hand? There is so much strangeness going on in these photos. Who is this woman and what did they do with Kate?

    • LittleKarnak

      I miss Curvy Kate…..

    • nannypoo

Rubble? Bricks? I never know what these people are talking about.

    • http://www.facebook.com/AdriannaGrezak Adrianna Grężak

      It’s a little too “I’m a serious actor” but she’s quite beautiful

    • maggiemaybe

She’s the yummiest. I’m going to go out and buy me some black eyeliner right now.

    • http://www.facebook.com/NadiyaOsmani Pudgy Possum

She looks like an–albeit gorgeous–shadow of her former self. I’m going to say it: “bigger” Kate is more appealing.

    • LaSylphide

I saw this spread elsewhere on the net, and the problem is, until I read the captions, I had no idea it was Winslet. Gorgeous, but not her.

    • bertkeeter

Very sharp….but as said below, it does not look like KW!

    • guest2visits

I think these have beauty and substance; it is her; looking as fantastic as always.
Someone mentioned Hitchcock, and she would be so perfect for any Hitchcock thriller!

    • quiltrx

Man, she gives some fabulous, classic face, doesn’t she?  The kind they gave back in the day…you don’t see that much anymore.  Love it.

    • CatherineRhodes

She’s photoshopped within an inch of her life, and elongated. Just dunno why they hire themselves a big star then repixilate her beyond recognition.

    • JauntyJohn

      If I went straight
      I’d go straight to her.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1594250515 Kim Brightman

      Looking again and thinking WOW.

    • lrhoff

      You go, girl.

    • cleep1000

Give me a break. Where is Kate?

    • kathrineb

She is so beautiful, thats all I can say.

    • kathrineb

She is so beautiful. That is all there is to say.

    • kathryn_dc

      I must try that eyeliner!

    • EEKstl

I miss messy, bawdy Kate too but she does look fabulous.  That jawline is insane!

    • http://twitter.com/lisledanielle Danielle Lisle

What did Sobaika call it? Lady wood. That’s what I’m experiencing.

    • peachy

wow. she looks fabulous. love the eyes.

    • libraangel

      She can carry bricks. WOW

    • KittieLynnNYC

      Stunning lady indeed.

    • bluefish

The usual silly Great Actress in Black and White Photos comments.  She continues to give off this vibe that smacks of butter not melting in her mouth.   It’s all just really too too.   Nice photos even though she oozes something out of Blade Runner to me.  Hitchcock Blondes were icy and composed on the surface and full of vulnerability, insecurities on the inside–Much like Alfred himself perhaps. These photos are beautiful but weirdly cold.  She’s a wonderful actress — always brave and not afraid to look unattractive.

    • glennethph

I will never not love this woman.
