Jennifer Lopez in Maria Lucia Hohan

Posted on March 25, 2013

This elicited a surprised “Oh!” from us. We expect J Lo to wear something diva-crazy, but it’s a bit of a shock to see her step out in a “Carrie Bradshaw, circa 1998″ getup.

Jennifer Lopez attends Muhammad Ali’s Celebrity Fight Night XIX in Phoenix, Arizona in a Maria Lucia Hohan strapless dress accessorized with Louboutin shoes and clutch.

But we have to admit, it’s cute and unexpected (coming from a woman who’s been known to step out as PYTHONA, QUEEN OF SNAKES or FELINA, PRINCESS OF CLAWS. The color’s a bit too skin-toned and we don’t love the lace, because it looks like she stupidly wore a two-strapper with a strapless dress, but we enjoy the sudden and unexpected princess fantasy coming from her and we LOVE the shoes, even as we think plastic see-through pumps are inevitably going to look gross before the night is over.

So yes; quibbles. But we can’t hate. It’s cute and sweet, which is a pleasant surprise coming from a lady who likes to dress like a supervillain when she’s in a bad mood.

It makes her look so short though. Not digging this particular Barbie nudity prom dress look. Then again, I’m not a fan of most of her fashion choices.

  • gabbilevy

First impression: This is an “imagine me in my lacy black underwear” dress if I ever saw one (fabric matching skintone exactly), but stylistically, this is a nice surprise.

  • Introspective

i do wish the color were different. this would have been really striking on her in a jewel toned green or blue maybe.

but i love the unexpected turn, and yes, agree that the shoes, while plastic, are still kinda fierce. great hair and makeup to boot. so not a werq but snaps nonetheless.

  • Jessi03

What a pretty bra she’s wearing under that dress!

Ok, I have a question. I’m not on pinterest, so that could explain my ignorance, but I don’t understand this new trend of wearing different nail polish on your ring finger only. If I want crazy sparkle polish, why not wear it on every finger? Can anyone explain this to me?

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I’m not a fan, but my sister and her friends were doing it way before Pinterest. Still no idea WHY, though.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sharon-ORourke-Frenz/1051519096 Sharon O’Rourke Frenz

I’m a nail tech and I’ve been doing accent nails for a long time. Most women who won’t go sparkly crazy will do one nail. I do sparkly crazy for most of my clients because as hard as the celebs try to stay understated, sparkly crazy is the trend. I just did a set of $150 nails with inlaid bridal lace in the acrylic, hand painting, 3 dimensional flowers on the ring fingers and rhinestones on each nail.

        • barbarienne

Reading this description I admit my instant reaction was “What the hell is wrong with people?”

But I bet it’s kind of fun being the person who gets to create all that.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sharon-ORourke-Frenz/1051519096 Sharon O’Rourke Frenz

Oh, yes. It’s more fun than anyone should be allowed to have! I love, love, love doing nails – the wilder the better! I’m so happy spring is coming! Spring glitter colors make me smile!

    • zelavie

It’s called an “accent nail”. I guess it’s like the mullet of nail polish – mostly reserved, but with a hint of par-tay.

    • DinaSews

They call it an accent nail. I can’t explain it, I just know what it is!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=745465637 Nellie Wilson

I don’t know, but I’ve been doing this for years, I guess just to be different. Now I’ll have to find something else to do. Damn.

      • MissAmynae

Do what I do, and just put it on a different nail….like one that’s fun to show off to people you don’t like *cheeky* ;-)

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I think because sometimes 10 crazy sparkle nails is too crazy for everyday. So we just do one fancy nail. Pinterest nails more refer to all 10 nails with some kind of funky design.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1208138556 Sara Munoz Munoz

It’s not really new, but it certainly is trendy lately. Like I’ve said before, once it hits the pages of an Avon catalog (which it has), it stops looking edgy.

    • RebeccaKW

I agree with some other Kittens, partly b/c all crazy nails can be too much for the every day. But I think a lot of people (myself included) regard nail polish as an accessory. So today, I might wear this ring on my pointer finger and this one on my ring finger, and paint one nail red.

  • gsk241

Kudos to JLo for trying something different. Too bad it had to be the color of old pantyhose.

    • Kappyapp

      my exactly thought

    • Vlasta Bubinka

I was thinking the color of old, about to be trashed ace bandages. These were repurposed for a Red Cross benefit performance of Swan Lake.

  • http://www.facebook.com/CameronETurner Cameron Turner

It looks like she is wearing a bikini top under a beautiful dress….

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

It covers her more than some of her other outfits, which makes me happy, but HOW she has chosen to cover herself doesn’t quite cut it.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

It’s pretty enough, but I can’t get behind the skin-toned dress. From the thumbnail, I initially thought she was only wearing a bra.

    LOVE the shoes, though.

    • charlotte

I also mistook the dress for her skin for a second.

  • thecitysleeps

I kind of love this, especially the length of it and the shoes. Do not love the skin tone colour, it’s too similar, and quite a jarring contrast with the black of the lace. It would have been better if it blended more. I need to ask, why are the shoes always looking too big on celeb’s feet? Is this an industry secret to have high heels hurt less or something? I need to know, if it is.

  • Little_Olive

Sorry, no. The only thing that seems like a departure here is the skirt, which is meh; the bodice is very JLo and I HATE it, almost as much as I hate how the makeup matches the dress.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

This annoys me about JLo… she is clearly wearing a metric ton of makeup, but it’s almost always nude. I understand the point of makeup enhancing one’s natural beauty, but the nude (skin- AND dress-matching) lipstick has GOT to stop.

    • drdarke

      I have no idea what’s happening here….

  • DinaSews

    So, so much better.

  • crash1212

Thumbs up – agree on the TLo quibbles – but altogether refreshing from Ms. Diva.

  • Sobaika

Not my favorite look (it is very Carrie Bradshaw) but snaps for trying something different.

  • hillmad

$795.00 PLASTIC shoes that look like toe sweat lodges!? I despair sometimes, I really do!

  • carolynmo

And she’s smiling, not delivering her usual facial expression. I agree that it’s not great overall, but I’ll take it.

  • Lori

I’m pretty sure this is a sign of the apocalypse. That seems the most likely explanation for JLo leaving the house looking like a Jeff Foxworthy joke (If you wear a dress that is strapless with a bra that is not…you might be a redneck).

    • MoHub

      Perfect!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

The dress is hideous. But can we have a round of applause that she is not doing her trademark “JLo Blow” duck lips. She looks so pretty when she just smiles.

  • AnaRoW

    I hate everything about this.

  • Susan Sontag

When I was in college in 1977, I used to just paint my pinkie fingernails with glitter nailpolish. I was ahead of my time…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000393765005 Garcia Loca

She usually goes crazy with body oil/glitter, but this time, it’s too much even for her.

  • SewingSiren

I like almost everything except the angle of the photograph, which is unflattering.

  • SugarSnap108

I hate it for the flaws you pointed out: It looks like she wore a lacy bra under a strapless dress, and since this is JLo I assumed that at first. And I never understand it when a gal wears a dress that matches her skin (and essentially her hair, in this case).

  • nannypoo

Unexpected, yes. Cute, not at all.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=603005248 Jeff Warhurst

This reminds me of Joan Crawford chopping down the roses for some reason. Maybe because we all know she’s not of the personality to wear such a dress.

  • mhleta

I am so jazzed to see her behaving like a pleasant human being and not some weirdo under the delusion that she is a super hero villainess (second time I’ve referenced the SHV today) that I can forgive the icky drab color and the retrofitted nursing bra. Huge improvement. I’d cross a crowded room to chat with this girl. The other, I’d flee.

  • Janet B

Nice change of style for JLo.
I wish there was a bit more contrast between her lips, hair, skin and dress.

  • MoHub

JLo—your bra is showing, and the dress looks like a costume for the last act of Giselle that got badly discolored.

  • Lolo Andre

For a minute I was like Is she not feeling ? Breakup on the way?

  • Jecca2244

are the straps part of the original dress?

  • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

I thought she was wearing two dresses, one on top of the other, but now I see that it is just her bra that is showing.

  • ellabob

    no no no…

  • Anathema_Device

I cannot stand that it is the same color as her skin. It looks really weird on her for that reason. I do like that she isn’t wearing something skin-tight for a change, though.

  • ballerinagirl80

As soon as this photo came up, my three-year-old looked up at the screen and said, “Mommy, she forgot her shirt.”

That pretty much sums up my thoughts on the top half of this look.

  • Pennymac

I can tell that I’m REALLY sick. Not just cause I’m home from work in bed, but because I don’t hate this. Must be the fever…

  • MilaXX

I agree about the color, but I like this on JLo. BTW those tulle skirts are making a come back. I’ve been lemming one myself.

  • MintaHallWriter

this is a HATE for me. I hate that it’s virtually skin-tone. I hate the length. I hate-hate-hate-TRIPLE-hate the shoes. Not a good look for anyone.

  • jetpackdino

I’m undecided about the Lingerie Ballet here. She’s a beautiful woman, but the color of the dress seems like a miss. Love that clutch though.

  • stubbornthoughts

I WISH this was in a different color. I’d much prefer if she didn’t wear her own skin.

  • librarygrrl64

Is that gold dust on her forearms? I wouldn’t be a bit surprised.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=12801074 Brett Hulst

      she is quite shimmery. quite.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1208138556 Sara Munoz Munoz

Plastic stilettos are misogyny in shoe form.

  • libraangel

I thought you were going to give her “Girl – that’s not your dress” She only looks three feet tall.

  • Indigo54

    It’s ugly! All of it!

  • Sara__B

That is one ugly dress.(I wonder if the back is as bad as the front?)

  • marilyn

That dress does nothing for her. It makes her lower half look ginormous, and the bushy skirt makes her look frumpy and short. NO, NO, NO..

  • warnerave

    awful dress!

  • IMNAngryLiberal

This dress is light-years too young for JLo (of course, one might say the same of her current boy toy).

  • drdarke

This Space 4 Rent By Disqus, Apparently….

  • Qitkat

    I. have. no. words.
Oh yes, I do. This is preposterously fugly.

  • Super_Red

I want to like this, I really do. But I can’t get over the fact that it looks like she wore a pretty (if oddly colored) strapless dress over a black lace halter bra. So…. No.

  • uprightcitizen

She looks like she’s about 3 feet tall.

  • Imasewsure

You guys are being too nice. Don’t like this at all. She looks particularly beautiful but not because of anything she’s wearing!

  • BrooklynBomber

As a woman, as an adult, as a person with eyes to see, I deplore this outfit.

  • Trisha26

Ludicrous. It just looks like a bra or coochie dress under a tutu. One complaint – she’s not wearing enough rings.

  • PastryGoddess

Of Course she’s dusted in gold…

  • another_laura

GAWD no. Count me out. The awful color, the black lace bit, the plastic shoes. The nails glitterized to go with the too-many diamondy rings. Ugh.

  • http://twitter.com/ThisMersLife ThisMeredithianLife

Best she’s ever looked. It’s decent, non-vulgar, pretty and she’s smiling.

  • http://twitter.com/irmaladuce_l8ly IrmaLaDuce

That’s a lot of body shimmer on that arm.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I am unhappy with her fingernails. They confuse me – and so do all of the rings. Pick a ring. Just PICK ONE.

  • Cheryl

And her cocker spaniel hair doesn’t help, since it adds to the confustion of the bra-straps with the strapless top.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I just noticed… she’s wearing a helluva lot of body shimmer there.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

      “Youthful glow, damn it. Youthful!”

  • l_c_ann

    Nope.

Looks like an oft’ recycled prom dress that got washed with a faded orange denim something by accident. The Anniston hair doesn’t help, nor does the milquetoast grimace.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Micaela-Cannon/1465504041 Micaela Cannon

anyone else see the thumb nail at a quick flash and think they were about to see jlo in a very scandelous bikini? i was so confused, since i can’t recall TLo ever putting up bathing suit pics….but now i can’t un-see it.

  • butterflysunita

I seem to be the only one who thinks she looks pretty. Or maybe I’m just happy to see a summery dress while it’s snowing–yes, snowing!–outside in NYC.

  • rococodada

    No,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no and……..NO!

  • fringebenefit

TLo, what was baked into your scones this morning?!? No, no, no. “Girl this is not your dress” at the very least. She looks very peculiar, which is being kind. If the movie Big were remade with JLo in the Tom Hanks role, and she suddenly transformed from a 5-year-old at a wedding to a 35-year-old at a wedding, this is what she would look like–and the audience would burst into hysterical laughter, tears streaming.

  • formerlyAnon

I dislike this more than it deserves because the fabric matches her skin tone too closely.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=783500814 Amelia Pitts

I find the whole look a bit too blah.

  • guest2visits

The dress works for her, the color is odd but still nice. The plastic shoes shouldn’t look this good but they do.

  • jw_ny

hate it all, except for some of the rings…although she’s wearing too many of them. It looka like she’s got a top on under a strapless tutu.

  • Anniebet

I gotta give her props for not wearing yet again another skin tight dress – so I’m liking the attempt at something fresh (for her).

  • DeTrop

First of all that camera angle is no friend to her. She looks dwarfed. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her look this bad. A strapless dress over a lace bra. NO. She would never wear this in New York or LA. She is so beautiful. Why this look?

  • Tuneful54

Nice try but all that nudey-nude from head to ankles is not her friend, and the “bra showing” look is trashy.

  • alyce1213

    That is one fucking mess.

  • ccm800

minor detail – she should have nude polish on those toes or why bother with that shoe? And she looks goofy tome all together.
