Jayma Mays in Paper London

Posted on March 01, 2013

We haven’t featured Jayma in a while; since we broke up with Glee, probably. She’s always been one of those ladies whose red carpet work has frustrated us. She’s built for a certain kind of look: that prissy, preppy, twee look her character sports on the show. But like January Jones and Christina Hendricks, two other ladies whose red carpet careers have been spotty, at best, Jayma seems to want to run as far away from her character’s signature look as possible.

Jayma Mays attends the PaleyFest Icon Award presentation in Beverly Hills, California in a Paper London dress paired with
Casadei pumps.

Paper London Spring 2012 Collection

Although sometimes, like this time, we feel like she’s trying to recapture a little of that Emma Pillsbury magic for herself, but falling a bit short of the mark. This could’ve been a really cute dress, but those bands of flesh-colored fabric look awful to us. At first glance, it looks like her dress is coming undone right in front of our eyes. It’s a shame, because if the design had stuck with just the black, orange and yellow, we would have loved this look.

Well. That’s not quite true. There’s still plenty to complain about when it comes to her hair (!!!!!!!!) and shoes.

To add to your complaints, I am not a fan of those earrings.  I remember loving Jayma at a lot of award show red carpets but other than that finding her choices spotty as well.

  • Sobaika

The collar loses it for me.

    • aeb1986

me too. wayyy too many elements here. the first thing to go (IMO) would be the collar. then those ugly nude stripes.

    • kimmeister

Well, at least she doesn’t wooden blocks on her collar like the model does (or whatever the heck those are).

  • halleygee

    Flight attendant dress.

    • Tr16ia

      Air Fugly?

    • Elizabetta1022

Air Cyprus, circa 1975. She was just in the elevator with the co-pilot before these photos were taken.

      • halleygee

        That would explain the hair…

    • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

It really is! It reminds me of View from the Top (which I suddenly want to see quite badly).

  • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

I like it, very unique, and good colors for her.

  • blogless

I hate the flesh-tone fabric as well. And the zipper down the middle doesn’t help; it makes it pucker.

    • barbarienne

Is it a zipper? Or a series of buttons or hooks that aren’t sufficient to hold it closed?

Hell, if you told me it was velcro, I would not be surprised. I can’t even comment on the dress, because that messed-up fastening system is making me cringe.

  • VioletFem

This dress would look a lot better on her if it was consisted of a more flattering combination of colours.

  • SewingSiren

The zipper looks all crooky . On just some ordinary girl I would think she looks great, but come on  starlets at photo calls with stylists need to step it up.

    • l_c_ann

Whatever the front closure is, it’s wrong.  The lower below the waist line closure looks really odd as if the zipper is helped by snaps.

      • SewingSiren

Or gold puff paint. Why is it all off to the side like that? I’m going to get a nightmare.
At least she’s not posing like she’s ready for her close up (as is the model).

        • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

great.  now I see gold puff paint.  here comes nightmares for both of us!

    • Kimbolina

I don’t think it’s a zipper.  It looks like buttons and a covered placket.  I think the dress is a hair too tight so it’s causing the buttons to pull and make the front stripe look all wonky.

    • formerlyAnon

It’s so odd looking that at first I thought it was a microphone cord. (Then I remembered what decade we’re in and felt old.)

    • MK03

It looks like it’s safety-pinned shut.

  • sablehunter

    Supermarket hair

And the dress looks like a stripper tear-away with that front seam

  • formerlyAnon

It’s a “just missed it” dress. Almost really cute and fresh. I dislike the flesh-colored bands, they’re what ruins it for me.

And if one were going to match the shoes to a color in the dress, she picked the worst possible one.

  • christinewithanx

Does that even count as doing your hair? Mine looks like that after the gym.

  • Alyssa

Seriously, since when did it become acceptable to be on the red carpet with gym hair?

    • alyce1213

Gym hair is nicer — that’s washin’ the floor hair.

      • sweetestsith

Also known as “I REALLY need a shower, but I have SO MUCH TO DO today hair”.

…sometimes I am guilty of this. But for the red carpet? tsk tsk!

  • another_laura

Yuck.  Ugly dress, bad hair, and need anybody say anymore about the pumps (notwithstanding that they match the ‘nude’ stripe in the dress)?

  • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

Dammit, this dress could have been great without those stupid nude stripes! Love the collar.

  • 3boysful

What you said.  And I liked how the model’s strappy shoes echoed the colorblocking in the dress.  The nude pumps–really, Jayma?  You couldn’t find a color in the dress?–aren’t cutting it.

  • Indigo54

That hair, that hair, that hair… shameful!

  • MilaXX

Out of all the colors in the dress she picks the silly putty color as her shoe color? Don’t even get me started on the hair. That is worse than gym hair. That’s just woke up hair. How can she not see that hair is so very bad.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HIZ7S2FRLC52NXARXQ4ERHNOGE Liz

My grandmother would be beside herself with that hair

  • jw_ny

Those flesh colored bands ruin an otherwise cute dress that really, for the most part, looks good on her.  Those shoe and that hair tho…ack.

  • Vlasta Bubinka

    HAIKU
    Spin class pony tail
    Odd strips resemble fore skin
    Silly putty feet

  • NC_Meg

I’m 99% sure Pippa Middleton wore this dress in NYC last year. I didn’t like it on her and I don’t like it on Jayma. I love colorblocking but this is such a weird deployment of it that I can’t sign off.

  • appliquer

    Horrible color combination.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Head to toe AWFUL!!!  She needs a new stylist, ASAP.

  • mhleta

I like the prim collar and the shape of the dress, but otherwise agree about the various disappointments. Shame, because she’s got mad potential. Really cute girl.

  • hughman

That janky closure down the front would have made Emma go postal, that’s for sure.

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I see nothing admirable here. They’ve even tortured her eyebrows.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

WTF is going on with her hair? The shoes don’t bother me so much, because they work with the dress, BUT I wish she would have worn the belt that the model had on.

  • BrooklynBomber

Whatever that dress is selling, I’m not buying.

  • Janet B

Even her earrings are flesh colored.

  • http://twitter.com/starrika starrika

I actually…like…this? I think it’s the colors and the overall shape and the idea of colorblocking for her, since the more I look at it, the less I like it. But it’s a step in the right direction, I think. And hopefully, that step is toward a hairstylist.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/47S737MGWCAZEZ73QOAFKDFEKQ Jill

I like the back of the dress better than the front.  The front zipper is an assault on the eyes.

  • tallgirl1204

I love the idea of this dress.  But (can I just say) I really really don’t like dresses that have fancy fronts and plain backs.  They remind me of cheap Christmas sweaters, all bedazzled on the front and plain “where no one will look.”  That said, I love the front of this dress, think it looks great on her– I wouldn’t have noticed the tan fabric if you hadn’t called it out, but now that you did it makes me sad, too.

  • Trisha26

So odd that her makeup looks best in that close-up profile. That dress is just awful.

  • Imasewsure

I feel like Viola could maybe rock this but not Jemma… the hair is awful!

  • Jackie4g

I am sory to say but this looks like a waitress uniform from the Swingin’ 60s.

  • AnnaleighBelle

The hem looks like I sewed it.  It was more interesting in the runway version.

  • decormaven

Is that waffle weave on the collar? Egads. Toss this dress back in the bargain bin where it belongs. And while you’re at it, put the putty pumps in there as well. Go home, do your hair properly, and pick a better dress befitting an important event. (And if said event isn’t important to you, stay home. You can schlep around there with ratty hair all day, but we won’t have to look at you.)

  • http://twitter.com/katoshicksu Kate

Love the dress on the model.

  • pookiesmom

    Huh. I love this.

  • peachy

    ew. ew. and ew.

  • Melanie_Bee

That dress could be okay . . . on someone else. The shoes really don’t work, and the whole look leaves her looking washed out. She’s very pretty and definitely needs to learn to figure out what suits her.

  • Zyxomma

I must be getting old. Had you not mentioned Glee, I’d have had no idea who she is. Hate the dress, it looks like a bad uniform.

  • JauntyJohn

I want to applaud her choice — I don’t agree with her choice (not entirely) — but I want to applaud it.  The vibe on this dress is fresh and current and suits a trim girl nicely.
And while I am no expert, the construction looks like a Project Runway also-ran.  That zipper! wtf? Let’s leave it with “Worked better on Paper” as we usher it, and the contestant, off the stage.

    Now. The hair.
While I don’t usually condone violence, someone needs a smart crack across the cheek for that mess.  It looks like someone’s little sister got a hold of their Barbie and the poor doll wasn’t rescued in time.

But I like Jayma, and she did a great job with the Sondheim number in the “Glee” wedding episode — no easy feat, that.

  • Call me Bee

Her face looks so pretty[[perfect make-up.  But the hair is awful–worse than running-to-the-gym hair.  And I totally agree about the flesh bands–compounded by the zipper going up the middle…and the shoes.  Ugh.

  • libraangel

There is nothing else to say but that this a damn ugly look from head to toe

  • SophieCollier

There is NO excuse for that hair.

  • Hetha Innis

I’m sick and have been in a bathrobe and a general state of disarray for days, and my hair still (unimaginably) looks better than that. But I really like that dress!

  • bertkeeter

So OVER all this color blocking to camouflage boring cut and fit. HATE the collar!

  • PaulaBerman

Is it me or is that zipper wavy as hell? It ruins the whole front of the dress, which would have been a skosh less hideous if the zipper had lain flat.

  • DaveUWSNYC

    Shoes are from PayLessFest

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1266410766 Phyllis Craine

    Prissy

  • DeTrop

Maybe it’s the winter blues but I like this.  I’d wear this to our Annual Tea Fundraiser at the museum or to an upscale restaurant ‘for lunch’ with the girls.  I like it.

  • lobsterlen

I really hate this dress. The wavy zipper is making my eye twitch.

  • Mazenderan

She’s so tiny that the blocks of colour and all the details seem to overwhelm her a bit.

  • maggiemaybe

Huh. That dress is ugly (I agree about those flesh colored bands–yuck) and yet she looks cute. That’s a neat trick…

  • http://twitter.com/lisledanielle Danielle Lisle

That strip of nude fabric running straight down the middle made me wince. Looks like she’s splitting in half.
