James McAvoy for Esquire UK

Posted on March 22, 2013

We may have been immune to James’ charms in the past, but we’re loving this editorial.

James McAvoy is featured in the April 2013 issue of Esquire UK magazine photographed by Simon Lipman and styled by Tanja Martin.

There’s a real sense of personality shining through in all the pictures. Instead of the typical Brooding Guy, we get someone who comes across prickly, charming, sexy, and intelligent. All through good posing and styling. We wish more actors brought their acting skills to fashion editorials like this. After all, what’s the point? The best fashion photography always tells a story, so why not put the actors through their paces more often and instead of simply dressing them, tell them to create a character? Put Meryl in couture gowns and tell her to play Catherine the Great. Put Hugh Jackman in Italian suiting and tell him he’s playing a spy. Put Anne Hathaway in day dresses and tell her she’s playing a shy secretary in the big city. That sort of thing. If you’re gonna use the actors to model, then make them act, we say.

He looks as delicious here as he sounded as Richard Mayhew in “Neverwhere.” Wonderful choices for him.

    • http://dorothydamage.wordpress.com/ Dorothy Damage

Neverwhere should be illegal, between him and Benny, I came close to swooning.

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

You were immune before? You have impressive immunity! He was half goat when I fell for him, not nearly as cute as this. And I loved him in X-Men despite the relative shitness of that movie.

    • Sue_Asponte

Completely agree. Need to remind myself that I want to see everything he’s ever done.

      • Aurumgirl

Then you’ve got to see him in the BBC series “State of Play”, a nice little political thriller story where he plays a journalist. He’s wonderful in it, even though he’s 10 years younger.

        • http://twitter.com/lois_abigail Lois Cameron

“State of Play” has hands down one of the best casts EVER. The fact that McAvoy is probably my 4th or 5th favourite actor in it when I absolutely ADORE him says all you need to know. Hello, Bill Nighy!

          • Aurumgirl

Bill Nighy! I would watch him interpret the yellow pages. State of Play does have a terrific cast and McAvoy is one gem among many. Be careful, though! It was “remade” into a Hollywood film–make the wrong choice there and you’ll be wishing to have that hour and a half of your life back, in wretched sorrow.

          • filmcricket

You know, it’s funny, I saw the film first & when I then saw the miniseries I was a bit disappointed. Not because it was bad, at all, but the film tried to cram quite a lot of themes beyond just the main plot into 2 hours, and I was expecting that the miniseries would allow those extra themes to breathe a bit more. Instead, it was mostly the main plot, just slower.

          • angryparsnip

I loved that BBC series so much I bought the set, even though you had to have the right CD player to watch it at the time.

McAvoy was so good in it plus I could just watch it for Bill Nighty alone !

            cheers, parsnip

        • Sue_Asponte

Yes, that’s what I first saw him in! That and he was wonderful in that (otherwise awful) Christina Ricci movie with the snout. Penelope? He was fantastic. I still haven’t seen Atonement. What else should I see?

          • mshesterp

All of it–see everything on his IMDB. It’s worth it. I even watched the original BBC version of Shameless, simply because he was in it! I’ve really missed him–welcome back, James!

          • Aurumgirl

The Last King of Scotland–that’s a good movie too, but I warn you it’s about Idi Amin’s Uganda. So it gets bloody. And I second anyone who says see everything on his IMDB. I’d forgotten all about Starter for 10, but I’m going to watch it tonight on a bitter kitten’s suggestion (thank you for that!)

          • Eclectic Mayhem

There is bonus Cumberbatch in Starter for 10 too!

          • http://surelysonsy.blogspot.com/ Jessica | Surely Sonsy

he’s also Tumnus in The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe! Doesn’t have the same effect, but yeah…

          • http://twitter.com/IntoWhiteness Cris

You must watch Atonement. Brilliant film, gorgeous James plus his acting is superb.

          • not_Bridget

Bonus Cumberbatch in Atonement! Steven Moffat saw him play that horrid character & thought he had the authority to play Sherlock….

          • http://profiles.google.com/sauchih Sau-Chih Feng

Did you know that James McAvoy was in tears when they shot the scene where he and Keira have tea before he ships out.

          • http://twitter.com/IntoWhiteness Cris

Yes…playing Robbie was something highly emotional to James. He said he really lived that character, entirely.

          • RebeccaKW

No and that makes him and that movie even better. (sigh)

          • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

He’s wonderful in Penelope! He’s dirty the whole time, and yet somehow SO charming and attractive. (Peter Dinklage is also awesome in that movie.)

          • H2olovngrl

            Bonus Dinklage!

          • RebeccaKW

Is Peter Dinklage ever NOT awesome?

          • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

Aw, I thought Penelope was a really charming movie. :(

          • fursa_saida

The Last King of Scotland for sure. It’s a really difficult movie–much darker than most of what I know him for, at least–and he’s incredible in it.

Also, Wanted is total trash, but it’s kind of fun and he gets to be a bit of an action hero, which is enjoyable.

        • TieDye64

State of Play was superb and it definitely made me take notice of Mr. McAvoy. And Bill Nighy can do no wrong in my book.

        • VanessaDK

I thought John Simm played the journalist. Looking similarly scruffy.

      • SoAustentatious

In “Becoming Jane” as the supposed love of Jane Austen’s life, Tom Lefroy. Very handsome indeed.
I saw him on The Graham Norton show recently and he was funny as well as fine. That Scottish accent is way sexy.

    • lovelyivy

There are a sad number of movies he’s been in where he was just about the only decent thing you could mention. Wanted, X-Men and Children of Dune (SyFy miniseries) are at the top of my list.

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Is Wanted that one with Angelina Jolie? If so YES.

        • http://twitter.com/herong Heron

Get thee hither to the BBC where he is participating in the radio play of Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere. SO GOOD! And bonus Cumberbatch there, too.

          • Derek_anny

Hie thee hence! Cumberbatch sings the Lyke Wake Dirge. Available globally. Also with Christopher Lee, Bernard Cribbins, Anthony Stewart Head, and Nathalie Dormer.

          • lobsterlen

Thank you for the suggestion. I just listened the first episode. It is really good. The whole series will be available for download on March 29.

        • Ogden1990

Indeed. Wanted is with Jolie. Loved it because of him. Same with the stint as a half goat–best part of the movie.

          • lovelyivy

Without a doubt! That was one of the least engaging adaptations of a book I grew up loving that I’ve ever seen. It was pretty, but totally soulless.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

He was half goat when I fell for him too. LOVE.

    • VicD

      I LOVE him!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=724916801 facebook-724916801

    oooh! I like! He’s approaching Ewan-ness!

    • MissAmynae

      my thoughts exactly.

    • Solfish

      ^ I agree!

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Yes! The McGregor is strong in this one.

        • Elizabeth Silverstein

They are both the Scottish, no?

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

Yes. And both yummy! Tho does James here get nekkid on film the way Ewan does?

          • http://twitter.com/IntoWhiteness Cris

He’ll get naked in his next film Trance! 😉

          • barbarienne

He was half-nekkid as Mr. Tumnus…

          • Elizabeth Silverstein

He was very naked in “The Last King of Scotland” – and good naked too. From what I can tell from his body of work, he tends to do love scenes in which he and his lady are vertical. I will not lie – it is very hot.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

Mmm. Thanks, ladies, I will look up these references. You might not see me for a few days! :-)

          • RebeccaKW

The Atonement? Hottest upright, fully dressed, no foreplay sex scene ever.

      • JosephLamour

Oh now that just made me daydream about them together. Thank you.

    • lovelyivy

He is totally my Ewan! Sexy because of all that personality and brain, and cute to boot. I’ve had a crush on McAvoy since he was the only good thing in the otherwise terrible Children of Dune miniseries that was on the SyFy Channel 10 years ago.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

Yeah, there’s also a definite Trainspotting vibe to these photos.

  • lundibleu

I was fairly immune to his charms until recently. Seeing him on Top Gear and then these… yeah, I get it now. Also, I want his boots. Not so keen on the McQueen though.

    • Melanie

Oh my god, his appearance on Top Gear! I was swooning. And I loved the bit about his ginger beard and how it’s so odd because his hair is brown and “I’m not red down there, either!”

      • H2olovngrl

That is pretty common. My mom and I both have auburn hair, yet my darkly handsome brother with the brown hair on his head and everywhere else on his bod has a ginger beard. With my auburn hair I have brown eyebrows and dark lashes. Children of redheads( which he may be) are weird.

    • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

No shit, he’s been on Top Gear? Can’t wait til I see that ep.

  • Scimommy

    Totes adorbs.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

OOOH I have never been immune to him. Ever. Even when he was a faun-y thing… Oh wait, Foodycat already said that and I’m in completely agreement. He is yummy.

  • http://opinionandamovie.blogspot.com/ Deitra S.

I’m a sucker for a Scotsman. Great shoot!

  • http://twitter.com/smithben Ben Smith

I desperately want to see that Meryl Streep as Catherine the Great editorial. Someone make that happen. Also, James McAvoy is lovely to look at.

  • Alyssa

I am not immune to his charms…he’s made me swoon since Chronicles of Narnia. He looks so mischievous, I just can’t help myself!

    • MK03

      Oh, Mr. Tumnus…

  • schadenfreudelicious

Atonement removed any immunity to his charms for me…..

    • http://twitter.com/ashleynalvarez Ashley Alvarez

      • schadenfreudelicious

        This! 😉

      • mshesterp

God, that movie just did me in.

    • http://twitter.com/IntoWhiteness Cris

One of the best films of the last ten years. And James is gorgeous and devastating in it.

      • H2olovngrl

    • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

Agree. No one could be immune after seeing Atonement.

  • crackineggs

    Och aye!

  • http://twitter.com/SillyGrrlJen Silly Grrl

    He’s so purdy!

  • Solfish

THANK YOU, Thank you, Thank you. I needed that to make it through the last of this Friday afternoon!

  • Unvacuous

I too was was immune to Mr. McAvoy’s charms until I saw him being interviewed . He’s quite charming, witty and intelligent, and a versatile actor to boot.

On a side note I always wished they had cast him instead of Elijah Wood in the Lord of the Rings movies, it would have added more dimension. But he’s clearly doing fine.

    • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

Oh my GOD. I absolutely love those movies, and this idea nearly killed me, because how much better would they have been with him?? I love ya, Elijah, but anything beyond “brooding” was clearly not in your wheelhouse. McAvoy would have been amazing.

      • Unvacuous

Right? I think they needed Elijah to have a known name in the films. Not that he was bad: he’s very cute/boyish but James is clearly boyish good looks + charisma = sex appeal

        • 3hares

Would have loved to have seen MacAvoy in it too, but EW definitely wasn’t cast for his name. Jackson was looking for unknowns and had never heard of him when he cast him.

    • jetpackdino

“On a side note I always wished they had cast him instead of Elijah Wood in the Lord of the Rings movies, it would have added more dimension.”

Quoted for truth. I liked Elijah too, but McAvoy would have been a stronger choice.

  • MilaXX

I love the quirky sense of humor in this shoot, more importantly I love the clothes. Gimme that black/brown/white striped jacket!

  • http://dorothydamage.wordpress.com/ Dorothy Damage

I’ve loved him ever since Starter for 10. And he looks divine in these photos. He’s in a radio production of Gaiman’s Neverwhere on the BBC at the moment (along with Benedict Cumberbatch). It’s heaven for your ears.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

he has brightened my entirely dreary day

  • DominoEstella

    huge crush on him..

  • unbornfawn

Looking good and showing range. I like.

  • jilly_d

ATONEMENT. Ahem. Well, er, now that’s out of the way, I love this editorial and the “adjusting cufflinks and squinting” or whatever he’s doing is particularly swoon-worthy.

    • Kristin McNamara

HAHA that’s the one picture in the bunch to which my body responded by having my head jump back from my monitor like, “WHOA. Who farted?” Cuz that has to have been what happened here….. someone ripped one and he’s having to keep posing for pictures while smelling it. hahaha

  • Isadora Paiva

I already liked him when I’d only seen him in movies, but once I saw an interview (specially with Craig Ferguson, he’s always at his best with other Scots) I fell in love. My relationship with Ewan has progressed much the same way. I love a scottish accent, but I love a funny man even more!

  • http://twitter.com/kendallbrunson SassyMcFrench

He’s adorable & this is a great editorial (except for that last pic. it’s almost Bono but not quite)

  • guest2visits

He’s always been adorable… yes, inappropriate crush on hot Scot – 20 years younger than me!

  • Glenda

I love his facial expression in the 3rd pic, and how the color of the jacket, tie, and pocket square compliment his beard color. My favorite movie of his was “Rory O’Shea Was Here,” and I liked him in “Wanted,” too. Hmmm, I see on imdb that he played the character of Steve in the UK’s production of “Shameless” — I’m gonna have to track that down.

    • mshesterp

It was good! he was delightful, as always.

  • http://twitter.com/jen_canary Jennifer Ford

I have never not gotten his appeal but he is even more appealing in this photos. SO much charm and personality.

  • MK03

Really? I’ve been a fan ever since he and Keira Knightley had a little fun on the bookcase in Atonement…

  • nannypoo

He’s really cute. I like that he looks like a regular guy. These pictures are adorable.

  • Imasewsure

These are great and you can also see the clothes. Don’t know him but I love him

  • Imasewsure

Oh ya… and love the McQueen – goes without having to match!

  • carolynmo

    I adore this man. Sigh.

  • Pterodactyl111

    I strongly approve.

  • pugluv

He makes my ovaries quiver, that is all I can say about James McAvoy!

  • knittermom

I was another convert after Atonement, and my heart gave a little leap when I saw the front page and it was James! Dreamy, so intelligent and those eyes….I like Ewan, but James comes first.

  • Monday1900

Amen TLo, amen! From your blog to the photographer’s ears.

I’ve always liked him a lot–my favorite of this series is the last one. What a charmer!

I love him. Especially when he talks.

McAvoy! You guys could feature him every day and I wouldn’t have a problem with it.

Now, if you would only give us some Benedict Cumberbatch. . .

  • Sara__B

I had to Google this charmer, and now I know he’s Scottish. So I can imagine his charming accent as I admire the photos.

The Scottish vacuum of charm – it endures. =D

    Constipation third photo?

I love that photo. Makes me think he could play a prudish pirate or a musketeer.

  • MzzPants

  • Nonmercisansfacon

Love this editorial. Can’t wait for the new X-men so we could have some McAvoy and Fassbinder pairing. Fassy and James are pure gold together!

  • E. D.

At the risk of stating the obvious…

    Good Lord, he’s hot.

  • poggi

I love the picture where he is adjusting his cuff and looking vexed. More fashion editorials should feature people looking annoyed.

He is very good. I notice him and the clothes in about equal parts.

I love the Berluti look…looks even better than what’s in the S/S 13 Berluti lookbook. He wears it well and brings personality to the proceedings. I usually hate celebrity fashion spreads but this one is awesome.

I love the shot of him shooting his cuffs! And just look and that hair (swoon) and those gorgeous blue eyes. He’s tiny and just right for me!

Something about him in these pictures reminds me of Edward Norton (except his eyes, which are wider set), especially the first shot.

Oh how I’ve missed me some McAvoy. He’s the only reason I watched Penelope twice in the theaters and bought it on DVD.

  • Susaleenah

i am swooning looking at these photos. I recall seeing him at the Toronto Film Festival when he was there with “King of Scotland” and “Starter For 10.” I went to see both and got to stand near him. I was so impressed by him. He was so not a ‘star’ with all the attitude and ‘don’t bother me.’ At ‘Starter For 10′ there was a group of young girls who obviously were fans and he jumped down from the stage and stood and talked to them and posed for the longest time. A real sweetie.
I have liked him even more ever since.

  • AnneNotHathaway

OH, I wish I was still of an age where it was acceptable to print out pictures of my celeb-crushes and tape them on my walls, because these would get the PRIMO wall-next-to-my-pillow spot. Scrumptious. Absolutely scrumptious.

  • http://twitter.com/watchinginkdry Krysta

He’s not making any approximation of Blue Steel in ANY shot. There should be an award for that.
