IN or OUT: Tina Fey in J. Mendel

Posted on March 06, 2013

We suspect there’s going to be some difficulties for the voting kittens this time around.

Tina Fey attends the premiere of Admission’ in New York City in a J. Mendel black leather fitted top and peplum forest multi metallic tweed pencil skirt paired with Christian Louboutin shoes, a VBH clutch, and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

J. Mendel Pre-Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Bette Franke

You’re pretty much not allowed on the internet if you don’t love Tina Fey and that well-deserved adulation is going to be tested. She’s wearing a leather top with a peplum and experience tells us that these are elements that many, many kittens respond to quite negatively.

Oh, who are we kidding? She could wear a flaming potato sack and she’d have a good shot at getting voted IN. As for us, we have no issue with peplums. We sometimes have issues with leather tops and their tendency to cause uniboob, which is pretty much happening here. But this isn’t an easy outfit to wear, nor is it safe, or something that Tina would have been likely to choose as recently as a year or two ago. It’s fashion-y, and we can’t help but give her points for that. On the other hand, a below-the-knee tweed pencil skirt is not what one thinks of when one thinks of a movie star at their own premiere. We think the outfit has some edge to it, but it’s also a little heavy and serious-looking.

We don’t know, you guys. We have some issues with it, but we think she should be encouraged to try more interesting outfits, so we’re loath to yell at her.

You do it. But we know you won’t.

Vote Now!

IN! My love for Tina overcomes all, even uniboob and peplums!

OUT! Uniboob. Peplum.

Many Precious Unborn Fawns admitted that, dammit, Nicole Richie’s Stella McCartney dress was NOT horrible. It was still voted OUT.

Only Tina can get away with a leather top and tweed pencil skirt!  She looks great, despite the odds.

    • EveEve

Yes. In.  A for putting in the effort, also for hair, fit, shoes, proportion, biceps and attitude.  B for length of hem and weight of tweed.  C for accessories. Needs a dramatic wrist cuff or something – it’s a premier!

    • Verascity

       I agree. IN for me.

  • Missy Covington

OUT: Peplum. Office job bottom and dominatrix top.

    • VanessaDK

Absolutely–failed Project Runway “night to day” outfit.

    • Completely agree on all points. OUT

    • That’s exactly what I was thinking!

  • PeggyOC

In.  The peplum actually isn’t bad here and she looks fab in the head region.

    • I loled.

    • Agreed.  And since I see some definition within her uniboob, she gets an in

  • Christy Cricow

Right again–I actually really like this! Think she looks great.

  • Don’t mind the peplum, hate the skirt. And, she’s in need of booties with this outfit. Love her all the same.

    • WhoAreYouWearing

Just the opposite for me; hate the peplum, love the skirt.  Not crazy about what the top is doing to her chest, either.  Love her, too.

  • captrenault

She’s clearly happy in it, and that makes me happy, and that’s that.

  • kat89

I think the top is too tight and I don’t know if it’s because of the peplum or the skirt fabric, but her hips look very wide in this outfit. Not loving the whole look. Out.

  • BookishBren

IN! I think she pulls it off and the top keeps the skirt from feeling too matronly.

  • I wish that was a better-fitting, less… yellow skirt.  That’s just doing nothing for her colouring.  Also, dafuk with her hair?

  • crash1212

IN. She looks great…just wish the skirt was a skosh shorter. I love the leather top with tweed skirt, and I’m SO glad she didn’t wear those dumbass socks a la model.

    • random_poster

You nailed it.  IN from me as well.

      • aykhan

Agreed – IN. I think the peplum works nicely here, probably because it’s restrained and not leather. Loving the tweed…

    • 3boysful

Me, too.  And she needs a strappy-ish/perhpas gladiator-ish black heel instead of those boring pumps.

  • IN.  I wish the pencil skirt was a couple inches shorter, but IN.

  • The hair is a mismatch with the style of the ensemble; the skirt could be shorter; I wish she had picked an edgier shoe and/or handbag (McQueen knuckleduster?  Valentino studded pumps)…  Overall, I like the direction of this, so a guarded “IN.”

    •  I think the hair is really killing the edge, too; but if she had more sleek hair, it might go costumey, so I don’t have a better idea.

  • Athenrein

IN for not being horrible and for being TINA FEY.

  • Alyssa

I love the unabashedly love the skirt, and want one STAT. The top looks a smidge tight and is definitely giving her uniboob. I tend to think peplums are way overdeployed, but this one is relatively inoffensive. Grand total: IN. It’s Tina Fey, and this is lightyears better than what she used to wear! A little underdressed for the event perhaps, but I like the look!

  • mjude

love tina but i just dont care for the look, sorry girl…OUT

  • Hell Yes, I Would!

In. I love it and would wear it to work tomorrow.

  • Jen

In: it’s the perfect nerd meets dominatrix thing going on.

    • LocMama

       What you said. IN.

  • IN. The tweed pencil skirrt is playing on her role in the movie as an admission counselor, and the leather top balances it out with some badassery (Full disclosure: I have one just like it from Zara).

  • aeb1986

I wish the hem on the skirt was about 3 inches higher but overall IN. I love that she doesn’t look frumpy anymore! She looks great here.

  • gabbilevy

In. I don’t looooove the skirt, but the stripe up the middle of the top breaks up the uniboob and the peplum softens the leather.

  • phrenk

I don’t like anything about this.  OUT.

  • IN because I love the metallic tweed pencil skirt but I think that top is overwrought and I don’t like the peplum. And yeah, I love Tina and I think she is looking so much better than she used to.

  • halleygee

OUT – a leather top with a peplum, oy.

  • Annabelle Archer

    Sexy Librarian = IN

    •  This! Hot for teacher!

      • Victoria Sharoyan

And isn’t she supposed to be playing an admissions officer who has a fling with an applicant? Or something? Perfect for the occasion.

  • Jessi03

I love it, but it looks too tight, and she looks uncomfortable.  Can it be an IT? A OUN?

  • reddhouston

IN…I actually think it looks good…and of course I do love Tina

  • uprightcitizen

Kinda like it, but if they’d whacked three inches off the hem of the skirt and the shoes had a little more edge to them, plus maybe a bracelet or two, I think she would have been damned near perfect. Seems like the uniboob concern is more of a problem for the ladies with more in that department. On her, the leather top is pretty flattering.

  • jkatkins

Honey, you’re the STAR of this movie.  You can do better.  OUT.  And I’m so over peplums.

  • IN: I would die of pride to go anywhere looking like this. Uniboob is fine; it’s winter, and they are keeping each other company.

  • In! (Am I the only one who actually enjoys a peplum now and again?)

    • j_anson

There was a commenter above who noted that they’re fine when they don’t hit too high on the waist, and I agree. If they’re set properly, they give a bit of a bustle-like effect, in other words, accentuating the natural flare of the hip, which can certainly be a good thing.

  • PastryGoddess

That top is tragic, but it’s a step in the right direction

  • christinewithanx

IN! And her hair looks fab.

  • Sobaika

Meh, I guess this is an Out – mostly because I don’t think this is right for a movie premiere.

  • I like peplums just fine when they hit at the right place; too often they’re high-waisted and unflattering. I’m sorry her top is squishing her boobs, but it’s not distracting for me and I think she looks really pretty. IN.

  • lucyloo222

Booties would have edged up the tweed skirt aspect.  I actually think she looks pretty great here.  Her style choices have improved immeasurably over the past year or so.  Yay, Tina!

  • Trisha26

OUT. It also all looks a little tight.

  • teensmom99

In despite the uniboob (which is always going to happen with a leather top) because a. It’s a great leather top (which means I am coming out as pro-peplum under the right circumstances) and b. it’s Tina. And I love love love the tweed.   Did I mention that I love Tina.  I also read the book Admissions and can’t wait to see her in this unless it’s a real dog.

  • Claire Scott

    IN! She looks great

  • greymain

out….hate the skirt…and who told miss tina to do the hand on the hip thing ???

  • allj

I don’t love peplums, but I think this is a good look for her. I wish the skirt were about three inches shorter and she switched out the bag, but her hair looks great and this is nothing compared to some of the disasters she’s shown up in!

    Also, I just love her.

  • MaryAtRealityTea

Well, I agree it has issues. Leather tops are no one with any sort of boobs friend. I’ll give her an IN for bravery and walking those Loubs right outside her comfort zone.

  • MaryanneGirl

I think she’s working this up and down! I LOVE that she tries different things. I think she looks HOT. IN!

  • sablehunter

IN, but only if the skirt has the leather panels like on the model.  If she had posed a little differently to let us see them, I’d like with no reservations.

  • It’s getting an out. Despite my love of the Tina. It just doesn’t work for her.

  • OUT! It is a movie premiere, not a day at the office.

    •  However, I want to work at THAT office!

      • 😛 LOL yes, it would certainly be a very fashion forward & stylish office.

  • Aly Light

Seriously, guys, I love you, but between the complaints about “uniboob” and complaints about “titscrepancies” and complaints about breasts “looking like they’re mad at each other”… I just don’t know what a poor woman’s to do. I think Tina Fey looks stunning here. This is definitely a cut above her outfits where she seemed to feel like she couldn’t be pretty. And not only that, but it’s a little bit different from her new-found “pretty” wardrobe– the leather gives it a bit of an edge, and she’s wearing a pattern! In general, I think she looks hot. IN.

    • “Seriously, guys, I love you, but between the complaints about “uniboob” and complaints about “titscrepancies” and complaints about breasts “looking like they’re mad at each other”… I just don’t know what a poor woman’s to do.”

We love you too, but you make it sound like we constantly harp on this in every post. When was the last time we used any of those terms?

Besides, that’s kind of what we do here, you know? We critique celebrity clothing based on, among other things, fit issues. All three of those phrases you quoted refer to different types of fit issues. We’re not seeing what the problem is.

  • lizajane1776

In. Not a huge fan of her (I don’t watch network TV, so didn’t see much 30 Rock), but she looks pretty good here. I would have suggested going up a size, but that doesn’t seem to have improved it on the model. I like peplums, very feminine. I wish we could see the side of the skirt-is that black still there?
But my favorite part here? The photobomb by her costar from the poster!

  • Dani Ausen

In. I think the top and peplum look great. Not crazy about the skirt but the rest of it is good, plus it’s a leap for her, which I like.

  • Elizabeth Silverstein

Marginal IN, with my love for her being the deciding factor. I like the leather uniboob top with the peplum for her, it’s a fashiony choice and I think it flatters her. I actually think this would have been a decisive IN for me if the hem were about three inches shorter.

  • j_anson

IN. It’s essentially a variant on the sexy librarian look – like, dominatrix librarian. The sexy librarian in all its variants pretty much IS Tina Fey’s ideal look, so. To me this is exactly the sort of thing an edgier version of her look would/should be, even though this particular incarnation is certainly not perfect.

  • In. Age appropriate but fierce

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Out.  Too long and too tight.  Nice try though.

  • I like the combination of leather and tweed.  I’ll giver her a lower case “in”.  If she wants capital letters then lose the peplum and shorten the skirt a skoosh.

  • capybara_cafe

I actually like it, although I feel wrong saying so, lol.

  • OUT! Uniboob. Peplum.

  • Janet B

It’s a great outfit; although the skirt is too long and the top is too tight. So close, but it’s an OUT.

  • OUT. sorry, when my first reaction is ‘oh, ick…..’. The top is too tight, and when one of the first thinks I notice on a person is their armpits…not good. this is a PREMIERE! you are the STAR! wear something…pretty.

Love Tina, but c’mon…you can and have done better. find a gay!

  • In, but the skirt is way too long.

  • Out!  (but kudos for trying something fashion-y)

  • Sarah Thomas

She’s built for peplums, unlike many who attempt them. So I’ll vote in.

  • Jangle57

Well I certainly think she looks better in it than the model – mostly because of the model’s styling (bobby socks with heels?).  Miss Tina is testing me with this as my initial reaction is yuk, but she’s pulling it off in spite of it so IN (plus its a big ole raspberry to Tay Tay and her lack of a sense of humor)

  • RebeccaKW

In.  I really like this.  I wish the skirt was shorter, as that length is awkward.  And I wish for a sassier pair of shoes.  But this is cute.  I also think that line down the bodice helps visually break up the uni-boob.

  • IN IN IN

  • Scott Isaacs

Gotta say in here. She looks whip-smart, businesslike (if a leather top can be businesslike), and no one to be trifled with. But she also looks kinda cute, and while this wouldn’t be an outright WERQ, it’s still a great look. And she’s totally owning it and working it.

    Yup. In.

  • Kenisha Hill Phillips

  • NC_Meg

OUT. Scroll down fug. I like the top (even the peplum!) but the skirt is so frumpy and unflattering.

    •  Tina’s idea of chic is always going to be just a little like an escapee from the Mad Men set, but with modern hair.

  • ashtangajunkie

IN. I love this outfit. I love her. Yay Tina.

  • Nariya

The skirt’s too long, but I like it otherwise. Leather keeps it from looking officey. In.

  • l_c_ann

Silly skirt with a different front than back.  Peplum is made out of something that isn’t leather.  Skirt’s too tight and top is going to be hot and sweaty. Her face looks great, but the outfit just doesn’t make it.

  • ojosazules

In. She’s pulling this off. It does seem a weird get up for a premier.

  • IAmJ

It’s a mild IN for me. Not exciting (and probably not very appropriate for a movie premiere), but not too offensive either. Although I do think the top is a little tight.

  • Fabulous, no reservations at all.

  • DaveUWSNYC

Is that a car’s headlights reflected in her uniboob?

  • In, but with one question: could someone please find what she’s done with Rooney Mara, and set her free now that Tina has her clothes?

  • BrooklynBomber

There’s nothing wrong with it; I just don’t like it. OUT

  • PrunellaV

No. I just can’t complain. IN.

  • This pains me to no end: OUT!

  • hughman

    LOVE the skirt.

The top, however, looks like part of a S & M ice skating costume.

  • Melanie_Bee

In, but only barely. I think the overall outfit/look is nice: it’s flattering and age-appropriate, and also current (though only just; Tina’s gonna need to step away from those peplums soon, even if they do look nice on her). However, it’s a very dull choice for the premiere of a movie that she’s the star of! Such a missed opportunity for her to shine, fashion-wise.

  • lrober03

if the tweed skirt was above the knee, emphatically IN.
Having the length below the knee is a bit dowdy.

  • TheLaurenJean

In. I honestly don’t have anything bad to say about this.

  • IN, i think she looks hot.

  • anotherkate

Out, for skirt length alone. Below-the-knee pencil skirts are a privilege for the Amazonian among us. Normal-height women look stumpy and/or knock-kneed.

  • TAGinMO

The top is a bit off-center and the shiny black leather doesn’t photograph particularly well, but overall I think the look is pretty great–particularly given her red-carpet history. Solid IN.

  • Lilithcat

I’d like it way better if the skirt were above the knee.  But, overall, IN.

  • filmcricket

In. Love the skirt, and in the first photo you can see it’s mostly hitting her where it should; in the 2nd photo it’s largely the angle that’s making her look so stumpy (although I do agree a couple inches off would be more flattering regardless). There are some fit issues with the top and I dislike peplums intensely, but this one isn’t that offensive and I love the leather ‘n’ tweed combo.

  • E. D.

Still IN.  My issue isn’t even with the top, it’s the the skirt is too long.

  • AnnaleighBelle

No fan of leather, but she looks curvy and lovely.

    In. Better than the model.

  • I think she looks fierce! The skirt may be a smidge long, but otherwise, pure fabulous. IN.

  • Love her, but this is an OUT for me.

  • I may love peplums more than I do Tina Fey, and while I’m particularly sensitive to uniboob, I don’t think it looks too bad.  And I love the skirt!  IN.

  • altalinda

    Out, too tight.

  • lobsterlen

In. A bit of uniboob not made. I think the strip of leather down the front breaks up the uniboob. She looks comfortable unlike that blue strapless dress.

  • tereliz

Uniboob. Tweed. Yet, still, I’m feeling like it’s an IN.

  • Jen

I LOVE Tina Fey. LOVEHERSOMUCHITHURTS. But the leather, the uniboob, the peplum, the fit. OUT.

I’m going to cry like I just watched Old Yeller get shot.

  • ankali

OUT. She’s in from the peplum up for me, surprisingly pulling off the leather; but that skirt is making her hips look wider than they are, and it’s not the most flattering length for her, either.

  • Monday1900

This is difficult.  I like the idea a lot but the execution is quite faulty–skirt is too long, top is too tight.  But I’ll give her an In because she’s not wearing socks like the poor model was forced to do.

    • Fordzo

I didn’t even notice those were socks until I read your comment.  I guess they just registered as boots, but I was more focused on how the top looked on the model.

  • Kristy Evans

IN. I think she looks pretty good here. I don’t hate peplums, and I think her boobs are defined enough.

  • Judy_J

Sorry, Tina.  OUT.  Skirt length is awkward.  The top is just too tight across the bust.  Love her hair and makeup, though!

  • MilaXX

IN. Not great, but it works for me…… and I love Tina

  • pookiesmom

I love this, and not just because I love Tina. IN.

  • jw_ny

It’s not awful…there are problems, but overall I think she looks good and dang if she isn’t showing off some curves and a thin waist.  Hair and makeup really helps, as well as my <3 for Tina.  😉

The leather top with the peplum adds some edge to the look, and I think it compliments the skirt.  The skirt does look heavy tho, and the leather does giver her uni-boob as well as laser nipples (leather reflecting the camera flashes should really be taken into account!)

  • Fordzo

I think she looks good.  The top might be a smidge too tight.  It looks better looser, as on the model.  Tight leather = dominatrix and I don’t want to think of Tina that way.

  • MsBusy

Strange, but IN. She gets a pass on the leather/peplum/tweed combo, even though on anyone else it out be a clear OUT.

  • stagmania

  • leave_Blake_alone

I’m going with IN, not *just* because she’s Tina Fey, but because I think this is actually cute and it feels cleverly appropriate for a movie where she’s playing a dean of admissions.

  • withbreaththatisbaited

I think it’s a bit too long, but it’s an IN from me. It’s not perfect, but it could (and has!) be worse.

But maybe my fangirl is showing…

  • decormaven

Out, and I don’t care if she were the Queen Mum. Peplum + leather = automatic out. It’s a rule. Look it up.

  • Donna Schmidt

  • Susan Collier

    Skirt: IN.
Peplum-ed Hefty bag containing two grapefruit: OUT.

  • I don’t think it’s the most flattering, but I generally like the outfit.  IN.

  • Rebecca Damsen

DUDES!  She is IN!!!  (by the way, I say this representing the over 40 crowd, who all are saying “I could totally still pull that off, look at Tina Fey!” and are rabidly seeking that top for our next high school reunion, provided we still have the figure to carry it off).  As usual, you are right – no one but Tina would get the thumbs up on this one!

  • I like it!  She’s playing an Ivy League admissions officer in the film, and I think it chicly references her role, but the rich materials make it star quality.

  • lalahartma

    I’m going to say out.

  • I vote IN, but I’m mentally erasing the peplum as I do.

  • TINA! Uniboob is not a good look and I love you enough to yell at you about it!

  • mshesterp

IN–I think she’s making the whole thing work.  I think she’s looking chic and adorable…hard to make both happen!

  • Tatiana Luján

I like it, in spite of the uniboob, but I wish the skirt hit above the knees.

  • Imasewsure

I don’t think it looks good at all but it’s not awful enough to be a true OUT for me. Qualified in in lower case letters

  • MK03

    IN. It’s smashing on her.

  • Sally Brownson

In. I don’t see what the problem is with leather tops.

  • Adriana_Paula

I like it.  The pleating on that top is lovely, and the stripy thing down the center mitigates uniboob quite a bit.

  • BeeBeauNYC

OUT – to paraphrase Joan Rivers from last week on Project Runway, if you’re gonna wear tight leather,  you need to be covered in tattoos and have spiked hair, not the Liz Lemon hair and makeup that Tina’s got going on right now. Also, for such a tight top, shouldn’t the hem be at a sluttier level on both Tina and the model?

  • I say ‘IN’. Leather nearly always makes things better…

  • IN.  i think she looks great, but it’s mainly because she tends to just miss the mark so often.  i feel like she needs the continued encouragement.  plus, i adore her so much, my roller derby/skate name is Latina Fey.  so there’s that.

    • charlotte

That name is awesomesauce! Right up there with Babe Ruthless.

  • Caitlin_G

IN- I think it quirky and considering the movie takes place partly on the Princeton campus its kind of appropriate lol

  • kimmeister

IN.  Hair and makeup look great, and I don’t have the irrational hatred of peplums that some do.  The skirt’s not the best but it’s not offensive either.

  • in. this movie is about an uptight admission counselor, so the outfit seems appropriate for the premiere. kind of in the way you discussed the appropriateness of some of the gowns for the Oz premiere.

  • In. I think she looks fab.

  • Anniebet

    Top half IN.
    Bottom half OUT.

I see two somewhat distinct boobs. When I clicked on the thumbnail the larger pic showed her from peplum up and that made me smile. I thought “Oooh, a nicely shaped LBD with leather top!” Then I scrolled down.

She totally should’ve worn the socks, though. Giggle.

  • I think the skirt needs to be shorter, but I don’t hate this. It could be better, but I don’t hate it.

  • Don’t know what it is about peplum, but it’s one of the few designs that I really loathe (and I almost never use the word loathe). In leather, it’s even worse. This outfit has about 523 things it wants to say about Tina, none of them very nice. And to me, she doesn’t look happy/confident in it, so that’s the nail in the OUT coffin for me. TEHO (to each her own) though.

  • BobStPaul

In.  That’s one of the least offensive peplums I’ve ever seen and I rather like the juxtaposition of the leather and wool.  Overall she looks cool.

  • mhleta

OUT. The skirt bothers me, the top doesn’t. It’s the length, the fabric, the horizontal pattern. Hate the skirt on her. But, brava for taking a risk. I seriously love this top on her and I want her to try it with a different skirt.

  • Caaro3

    In. Nice curves.

  • Buffy

I don’t love it but she looks so much better than usual I have to give her an IN so she stays encouraged

  • unbornfawn

I’m not entirely crazy about the fit on the top. I don’t mind the peplum, yet thinks it should be a touch longer. It is a bit casual for a movie premiere.  Her hair and make-up suit her well. There isn’t really a glaring problem with this outfit. IN.

  • DinahR

OUT.  It’s an okay outfit, but doesn’t fit the venue at all.   The skirt hits too long on her and she looks more like she belongs in an office after hours than at a movie premiere.   Having said that I think the treatment running straight down the front of the top prevents severe uniboobness and I do like the peplum.  She looks good, but just not for this event.

  • nannypoo

She looks like she can hardly wait to get home and have someone cut her out of that top.

  • Louise Bryan

    A grown-up woman
Tweed skirt, heels, and leather top
    You bring it, Tina!

  • maggiemaybe

Out. I just can’t get behind the whole leather top thing. Peplums kind of make my eye twitch too…

  • Adore her, but that line down the uniboob + peplum = OUT.

  • trisker

OUT for me, but not because of the leather top and peplum, but because the skirt is too tweedy and textured with the top, and the length is frumpy.  I love her completely.

  • Synnamin

IN. I like peplums myself, and while this is a bit heavy, I don’t hate it so much to call it an out.

  • luluransom

Hem the skirt to just below the knee. Shoes need to be tougher, swap for a pointy-toed, non-platform version. Still an IN for me though.

  • momogus

  • In. Uniboobs are slenderizing.

  • Sadie-Ann

OUT. It’s so tight that in certain pictures it looks like she saran wrapped her chest.

  • Airkisses

I’m going to say IN, don’t want to OUT all the intersting outfits into extinction.

  • Zaftiguana

IN. On it’s own merits even, since I love Tina but would be the first to admit that she’s worn some fugly stuff through the years. The center dealie gives the uniboob enough definition to be passable and I like the chevron pleats at the waist. And then her hair and make-up look amazing (unlike this apparent stinker of a movie she’s premiering. See? I can be objective).

  • I like it. It looks like an armored breastplate, so the peplum makes sense. And they had the good wits to make the peplum out of something floaty. IN.

  • zelavie

Gotta vote OUT on this one.  I really like the top, but it just doesn’t work with the bottom half.  That skirt is too stuffy, and the shoes too boring (although I think they’d work with a better skirt).

  • formerlyAnon

Out. Leather top doesn’t meld into a unified ensemble with tweed skirt. On the model it looks like there’s a leather panel/back to the skirt (not sure if that’s an improvement?) but see no such thing on Ms. Fey.

Also uniboob. But that I forgive because her hair is awesome.

  • bd73

in. edgy. sexy schoolmarm-ish. “yes, i am tina ‘motherfucking’ fey.”

  • erinbinek

I love it- I think she looks fantastic!

  • marilyn

Out.  She does not seemto understand how to dress herself.  The blue dress she just wore was for someone much younger, and boobier than her.  It also made her skin look sickly and pasty.  This is odd as well.  The rockin uniboob leather top with peplum actually looks okay.  But the skirt makes her hips look wide, and the momshoes do nothing.  She needed to get some meaningful boots to go with this, and find a skirt that does not make her look wide. It would have helped if ths skirt had been significantly shorter.  I think TF still does not understand herself in terms of fashion.  She is wearing a top for a minx of a teenager, a skirt for a librarian, and shoes for a mom.  At least her skin is a good color in this picture.

  • Lisa_Cop

Hate that leather peplum top, especially because it doesn’t fit. Big OUT!

  • n a

Out. And I love you Tina!

  • That’s an odd choice.

I can’t say she looks especially bad, but the skirt needed to keep the black contrast panel to keep it from looking too business-y, and the leather is more of a problem in the top than the peplum.  Edgier shoes would have helped.  Hair & makeup are awesome, but I really hope she doesn’t go much blonder – can’t we have any famous brunettes?  Please?

  • subwaycars

I am not a fan of Tina at all, but I am actually loving this quite a lot. There are a few problems- the top is awkward, and I wish the skirt was a wee bit shorted- but overall I think she looks rather nice. IN.

  • IN. It’s a *NY* premiere so boho chic.

  • boweryboy

The peplum pushes it into OUT territory.  If she nixed the peplum it would be a pretty fierce look.  Even the heavy tweed pencil skirt works for me and is season appropriate.  But I just can’t with peplums.  I just can’t.

  • Maluca

In. I think she looks quite feminine and the fit is great!

  • butter nut

IN. i dont hate it.  my only issue is the leather uni-boob.  but i can live with it.

  • IN

  • Kate4queen

Out, sorry, its just too heavy.

  • another_laura

Out.  For the very reasons T Lo stated.

  • Dagney

    HEM LINE. hemlinehemlinehemline.

  • moreteawesley

I actually think she looks pretty awesome in this.

  • margaret meyers

I love the peplum top.  The tweed skirt is an abomination.  Weak, weak, weak “in.”

  • Belle239

OUT.  I think she looks wonderful from waist up.  But, that skirt is awful.  Wrong length, wrong shape. It doesn’t look any better on the model, so it’s just a bad skirt any way you look at it.

  • IN. She looks hot! And I love her shoes!

  • I actually kind of love this on her, and not just because I love Tina Fey, but because she looks kind of, well…badass.

  • Pterodactyl111

In. I didn’t even notice the peplum. An unnoticed peplum is a good peplum.

  • PeaceBang

I think the flash against the leather is making the uniboob stand out. I bet this top looks super hot in person. The skirt isn’t my favorite but Tina Fey is, so it all balances out to an IN.

  • bertkeeter

IN all the way! Question…is skirt same as runway ….leather panel on back?

  • Zippypie

I’d love to give this an IN but I just can’t and it’s not the peplum or the uniboob – it’s just blech.  If the bodice wasn’t leather but exactly the same, it would be an office outfit.  So I just can’t get behind it for a premier. OUT.

If she had done the leather bodice with some skinny ladypants, a deeper lipcolor and some kick ass shoes, she would have gotten and in for sure.

  • Love it.

  • conniemd

In. She looks good. Agree, not the best choice for the venue.

  • demidaemon

I do see the uniboob problem, but I can’t help feeling that she looks pretty great here. It’s all working for me. IN!

  • LC

Definitely in!  She’s pulling it off and I love this look on her.

  • The skirt is a skosh long, and the whole ensemble seems to fit a bit awkwardly, but she looks great somehow. Going with a lowercase “in”.

  • SewingSiren

The outfit is cute. Like an updated version of the old school theater suit. The movie looks terrible though. If somebody offered  to pay me to see it I would need to know how much before I agreed.

  • siriuslover

I kinda like it. It’s weird enough to like. So I’ll give her an In.

  • I like the peplum and the tweed, but not the uniboob. Two out of three ain’t bad, so I vote IN.

  • in duh in

  • Mexxoo

The pictures made me say, “Oh!”  Then they made me say, “Ummmm…”  So I guess that’s an OUT.

  • lolaleen

I’m gonna say IN – I like it for the most part. The main problem I see is the leather top – when you’re getting your picture taken with flash, shiny leather is not your best friend.

  • CatherineRhodes

Sorry, Tina. You saved the 2008 election with your dead-on Palin spoof. However, I can’t in good conscience give you a pass on this one.

  • JauntyJohn

    It is Tina Fey.
Plus, I think it’s a bold choice for her, and while I am not sure I love it, I don’t dislike it enough to be an out.
Plus, see above:  It’s Tina Fey.

  • Joyce VG

IN! Love this look for her.

  • Firmly in the IN category on this one.  Really just a few minor alterations will take her back to the land of the living.  1) shorten the skirt–above knee seems perfect.  2)  add a bold cuff bracelet, black leather or hard plastic, something angular and quite possibly lethal when the wrong button is pressed. 3) a pair of KILLA black or olive green boots would enable her to tease her suitor to glorious heights of passion in his fervent  attempt to “climb her staircase’.  The uniboob peplum will then, 4,  be sliced off by said male animal amd fashioned by him into an impromptu ground covering for the ravishment about to occur.  The shortened skirt will protect them from the elements as they spend the evening REALLY tousling that pretty hair.  This will leave other partygoers drooling with anticipation of a big story, and petulant because they didn’t think to wear an leather uniboobpeplum tweed combo to this premiere.  Amateurs!

  • hmatz

I’m giving her an IN. Is this the best outfit ever worn? No. However, it is risky for her, I think she’s (mostly) getting away with it, and, hello, it’s Tina Fey… she owns everything.

  • pdquick

That off-black central stripe totally makes it. If it were a simple leather top, it wouldn’t work, but that stripe gives it a subtle geometry and texture that makes it work. Even with a peplum. Arguably, without the peplum, it would be too severe for the tweed. Also, that red-orange woven into the tweed does not go unnoticed. Aw, hell yeah: IN!

  • harleydear

I also vote IN. She does play an college admissions officer and this outfit gives a fun nod to that. Agreed on the need for spicier accessories and a shorter (knee-length) hem.

  • cleep1000

    OUT. OUT. OUT.

  • kathrineb

It’s OK… In I guess. I am not a peplum hater at all.

  • fursa_saida

I’ma say OUT, because the tightness and length of that skirt are making her hips look wide and her legs look…not stumpy, exactly, but…I don’t know. Strange in some way. I have no problem with the top, nor with her well-established fondness for peplums–she wears them A LOT, but she wears them better than pretty much anyone else I can think of–but that skirt is no good, at least not for her. Also, she looks incredibly uncomfortable in these photos? Not selling it.

  • DiverK

  • Indigo54

Split decision here.  IN for the top, OUT for the skirt.  Keep trying Tina, you’re getting closer.

  • I love it. It could be a skosh looser in the chest, and a skosh shorter in the skirt, but leather and tweed is gorgeous. In.

  • Out.  The top looks way too tight and the skirt is too long.  The fit, the proportions, and the juxtaposition of the leather with the tweed are all elements that are not working.  The peplum is the least of my worries.  The black makes her torso look super tiny and squeezed in and the long skirt in the houndstooth tweed makes her look bigger on the bottom than she really is.  Poor Tina.  Whoever put her in this should be fired.

  • leftcoastpickle

IN because it’s such an improvement and I lurve her and I cannot be counted on to be objective.

  • OUT. Like the outfit, but not appropriate for the venue. This is more of a “Women In-” luncheon kinda outfit.

  • carolie_king

You’re absolutely right – if it weren’t Tina, I’d be hemming/hawing more, but I have to say IN.

  • MarissaLG

IN. Peplum is a little overplayed, but I don’t mind it. I think this top gives her a little of a rocker edge and pairs nicely with the demure skirt. The skirt is wrinkly but it fits well.  This isn’t my favorite look on her, but it’s a solid IN for me.

  • Cathy S

I like it in theory but it seems too tight and she looks uncomfortable. She’s standing so stiffly. I’m on the fence, but leaning towards OUT because it doesn’t fit well.

  • IN. The hem could have been at a better place (the eternal curse for short women), and I don’t like the two pieces together much (the tweed fights with the leather) but I don’t think it’s horrible. The detail down the center of the top keeps the uniboob from being such a serious problem, and if the skirt had a leather detail (like leather edging at the hem or something) I’d love it.

  • I think overall it still a decent look. Not her best ever, but cute. In.

  • Tina looks amazing. However, I hate the peplum, and I’m not sure she’s really pulling off the top?  This might be a slight “over-reach” for her?

  • kategs

IN.  That top fits her perfectly and I like the contrast between the tweed and leather.  And it’s a softer peplum and small-ish so it works for me.

  • Oh, I just adore her, as contractually required, but this is out for me. The top is too tight, and the skirt is too long. Or too short. Not right. She’s got a pair “you can do something with,” and they’re getting all smushed in that top.

  • almondemy

Girl, that’s not your peplum. OUT.

  • Dot

I like the mix happening here and her vavavoom shape. The leather top gives the serious tweed a bit of edge. She looks pretty fantastic. I say IN.

  • librarygrrl64

I kind of love it. IN!

  • rkdgal

The skirt length isn’t great, but it’s my imaginary BFF Tina, so she gets an IN from me!

  • jjfg

Feh.  I don’t even like it on the model. Out. Sorry, Tina.

  • LuxuryLime

I love the contrast in the fabrics. It fits her great (except the previously mentioned uniboob – which doesn’t bother me), her face and hair looks fabulous! IN!!!

  • I love the top, and I love the skirt, but I don’t think I love them together. But still, I give Tina an “IN.”

  • Leather, peplum, and tweed.  Drag queen band name?  I think she looks good, against all probability, and you’re right, it’s Tina.  And she’s come so far!  IN.

  • peachy

IN — not my fave, but she’s like one of those lady cigarettes — she’s come a long way, baby~

  • GTrain

    IN. She looks ok

  • belfebe

OUT.  Girl, that is not your dress.

  • IN!  Taste the Lemon!

  • libraangel

    OUT. Sado-masochistic Mad Men secretary

  • libraangel

p.s. falling down knee-highs on the runway model? Yeah, right!

  • momjamin

If you’re going to give the leather top a peplum, I’m thinking it needs cap sleeves. I think it’s the sleeveless top and tweed (wintery) skirt combo that’s throwing it off for me. (Not that all the other points aren’t well-taken, but that particular combo scrunches my nose.) Almost in.

  • Noelle Haland

In, but only just. I actually don’t think she looks like she has uniboob here, amazingly. Overall, she looks good, though it’s a bit staid for her premier. And I normally HATE peplums. 😉

  • Jack Smart

Never mind what’s happening above the waist – that skirt is hideous and belongs pretty much only at the public library. Tina, I literally worship the ground you walk on….but you look weird. OUT.

  • UptownNippy

I don’t have any opinion one way or another on Ms Fey herself but I do think this skirt makes her hips look awfully broad.
    Why is she always smirking?

  • Jessica O’Connell

I’m not typically a fan of peplums but I can’t deny that she looks great. Plus she’s Tina Fey, which helps immensely. IN.

  • Lola67

Friday morning, catching up on my TLO…….I know I’m late, but this is an IN for me. I wish the skirt was a tad shorter, but I quite like the pelum and her hair color is fabulous!

  • ccm800

Out. The topis unflattering and clashes

  • IN.
