IN or OUT: Solange Knowles in Vika Gazinskaya

Posted on March 08, 2013

Gotta give it up for Miss Sol. We love a lady who consistently takes risks and puts the effort in on her fashion.

Solange Knowles attends The Armory Party at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in a Vika Gazinskaya top and skirt paired with SportsMax shoes.

Lorenzo loves this look a little more than Tom does (his complaints: shoes too literal, skirt and top don’t quite go together shapewise, turtleneck), but we’re both in agreement that she really is quite the fashionista. Not only is she looking head-turning in some unusual pieces, she’s wearing a way off-the-beaten-path designer. Attagirl.

But since we’re not fully in agreement and because these are slightly odd choices, we’re curious as to what the Bitter Kittens think.

IN! Work that weird shit, girl!

OUT! I can’t.

Everyone’s love for Tina Fey won out and she was voted IN, even though many of you saw the problems with her outfit.

  • I’m leaning toward’s Tom’s opinion…it’s not the best combo of top and bottom, but I adore the shoes and she looks fabulous as always. IN for me.

  • Sobaika

IN! My love for Solange wins out even though I do see the quibbles in her outfit 🙂

  • aeb1986

Overall, In! It’s a bold outfit and she looks great (as usual). Although I think she either should have gone with a different skirt or different shoes. The three items together are a bit much.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Luuuuuvvvvv it! In. Embrace the weird, lovely Solange!

  • schadenfreudelicious

she should have kept the original skirt, the shape and length seem to offset the turtlneck in a more flattering way, this one looks a bit awkward, that said i will still give her an IN…

    • For all the same reasons, I give this an out.  Esp with those shoes!!

      • schadenfreudelicious

the shoes are a definite OUT for me…but for some reason i am not offended by the overall look….

    • conniemd

       IN for the same reasons.

    • Alyssa

I too say IN for the exact same reasons.

    • sojourneryouth

I agree.  With the raindrop skirt, the cloud on the shirt makes sense and is a nice touch of whimsy.   But, with this skirt, it the cloud just reads as “weird, amorphous white blotch.”  I still liked the outfit for the most part, but that blotch kind of bothers me without the raindrops, because it is too definite to be random, and too random to be definite.

  • Annabelle Archer

It’s giving me a case of the things that make you go HUH?

    • Vlasta Bubinka

      Let’s ‘ku!

      Walmart Cloud logo
Junior ice dance folk style skirt
      Thus fierce face is lost.

      • Mistie Holler

        Cloud top needs rain skirt;
        Feet ought not wear tuxedoes.
        But – Solange, so IN!

  •  I’m sorry she mixed-and-matched the top and skirt, because they don’t work as well as the intended pairings on the models. And I agree that the shoes are too literal but IN because I think the individual pieces are awesome and I think she is magnificent.

    • LearnedFoot

I agree. The cloud top is “wittier” when paired with the raindrop skirt. But each piece is awesome and I’d wear them all if I had the money or the body.

  • In! This makes me smile.

  • TSkot

Ridiculous.  And can’t get past that hair!  OUT OUT OUT

    • StellaZafella

The outfit pieces are, separately, fine with me, but it’s the clashing whites that make me say – out.

However, her ‘fro is now and will always be an IN…I guess it’s just where I’m from. (Plus I keep thinking back to Bebe Benet from Drag Race 1 and whispering ‘Cahmahroooon!” to my screen)

      • kimmeister

Yes, the clashing whites are what make it out for me.  Plus, the fact that the top looks like she had an accident with Wite-Out.

      • filmcricket

Yeah, it’s the clashing whites that are making my eye twitch, too. Also, those shoes are ugly as sin and give the gut impression that she’s wearing cows on her feet.

Agreed on her hair, though, it’s store-bought fabulousness.

        Overall: OUT.

  • Out on this one kids…. sorry, I just can’t get there today……

  • ankali

I wish there were a full-on shot of her so that I could get a better sense of the proportions of the top & skirt to each other. That said, she’s an IN from where I’m sitting. It’s not to my taste, but it’s striking and thoughtful, and very much of a piece with her own personal style.

ETA: I really do love the top with the longer skirt on the model. Beautiful look.

  • I love Solange, I love b/w, I love the idea of these looks as separate looks.  Put together, none of this works for me.  OUT (but with a hug and apologetic smile).

  • RuthGo

I love the feel of these pieces, but I wish she had worn the raindrop skirt instead. The orange cloud looks like a stain to me. So, in for effort, I guess?

  • I agree that this is the wrong skirt for the look, but I’m not mad at the shoes.  While problematic, I applaud the overall commitment to fierceness, and say IN!

  • ChaCha_70

IN! P.S. a little note to Solange – never change your hair style. Fierce!

  • mjude

  • librarygrrl64

OUT. I’m with Tom on all counts.

  • Indigo54

    Totally IN.   She looks great!

  • crash1212

IN. Even though I wish she’d worn the rain drop skirt. I usually HATE peep-toe booties, but I kind of like these…Solange has turned me! – and I do not think they’re too literal for the outfit.

  • bailey debruynkops

  • MarissaLG

    Out. I can’t.

  • Tatiana Luján

Love the hair and makeup, but that skirt is too unflattering.
OUT.I like the raindrops skirt the model is sporting.

  • Le sigh. I have to say OUT. Only because we know that Miss Solange can do WAAAAAY better than this.

  • OUT.  Poor combo of cool pieces.

  • First, I must have that top.  J’adore.  That said, I wish she would have gone with the original pairing or altered the original skirt if she wanted to go short.  The tangerine scribble on the bottom right originally caught me as a spaghetti malfunction.

  • Martha Deutsch

Works for me. Especially considering the TLo edict to “know thy venue.” She IS at the Moma, after all.

  • DominoEstella

She can do no wrong in my eyes.. I love her.  I can do without her boring, more popular sister.

  • Kathy_Marlow

IN, but I think if the skirt had more of a pattern than it does, I’d love it more.  Girl knows how to wear clothes..

  • Rachelle Neame

I GUESS if we’re being quibbly, the top and skirt aren’t the best together, mostly for me because the black and white colour story of the top and shoes don’t go with the lovely cream of the skirt.

But she’s IN IN IN! We don’t have time to be quibbly when she looks this fabulous and of COURSE she’s going to a party at MOMA. Not a WERQ, but she’s really doing something cool here. This wouldn’t work at a different venue.

  • NDC_IPCentral

I’d like to have seen the runway paring, because the cloud on the turtleneck produces the raindrops on the flared skirt.  Yes, yes, literal, but that’s the humor of the outfit.  I also think Ms. Knowles’ booties serve to shorten her legs.  I’d rather have seen a non-stumpifying pair.  And I think peep-toe boots are idiotic.  My opinion, and everyone is free to disagree, but I’m not budging.

  • OUT- These are all good individual elements but they just don’t work together.

  • lrober03

Skirt is the worst part of the outfit for me, but overall pretty good

  • Kate4queen

In -perfect for an art gallery but only she could pull it off.

  • In_Stitches

The top and skirt just don’t go together.  The skirt says lady and the top says fun sportswear.  Put her in some jeans and the look would sing.  OUT.

  • Sara__B

IN. I was leaning towards an out until I read, “…work that weird shit, girl!”  She’s at the top of my irrational like list, and her face, hair, and attitude seem to make everything she wears work, no matter how odd. So IN. Again. As usual. Keep on wearing crazy stuff from off-the-beaten-path designers, Solange. No one is more fun to watch than you!

    • Sara__B

I just learned she performed in that outfit, which makes it not quite as odd as I thought.

  • MilaXX

IN. but really did she put paint splatters on her arms?

  • I love those shoes. I’d call it Solange realness! In!

  • She’s owning it! IN

  • carolie_king

Skirt/top don’t go.  Makes me think of the preschool book It Looked Like Spilt Milk.  OUT, but she is really stunning.  She could wear Milton Berle’s old pajamas and still look great.

  • hughman

I’m guessing the matching top piece to the skirt she’s wearing was long to cover up how funky the waist is.

  • Imasewsure

I don’t really get the pattern on the sweater at all… still kinda funky fun  IN

  • OUT. Wished she’d have worn the skirt in the first shot, it seems more like her.

  • shaziz

  • Out.  I wish that she kept the raindrop dress to go with the cloud top.  That would have made me smile.  And really, isn’t that the point?

  • teensmom99

In–with different shoes the top & bottom would look cute together. Some ins are this close to a WERQ. This one isn’t.

  • VioletFem

IN. It’s a striking look, although I don’t care for the shoes.

  • Aly Light

So cute! Although I like the model’s cloud/rain combo better. But IN.

  • butterflysunita

IN.  I like how on the model the cloud top is paired with the rain drops skirt–it’s fun and has a sense of humor.  On Solange, you can’t really tell the white patch is supposed to be a cloud–it looks like a strangely placed white blotch.  Still, the hair, attitude and smile make this a clear IN.

  • BrooklynBomber

Hate the shoes. I like the designer’s ideas, but don’t think the mixing & matching is working here. OUT

  • Beardslee

IN.  She is always a pleasure.  I wish the skirt were longer and the toes were closed but she looks fresh and happy and very pulled together.

  • In

  • IMNAngryLiberal

OUT … 3 nice individual pieces that are less as a whole.

  • It saddens me, but the skirt is wrong. Out.

  • harlowish

I love that she takes risks and I appreciate the effort  behind this look, but it doesn’t quite come together for me.  OUT, by a hair.

  • I don’t like the slight offset between the white on the shirt and the beige of the skirt, but I like them both individually. And because I love that this is the direction she went while visiting MoMA, IN.

  • marilyn

Out.  Don’t like the skirt paired with that top.

  • IN!  I love that she’s being “editorial” and wearing something unusual.  I don’t think her combo is as witty as the original raindrop skirt.

  • Out. I can’t.

  • Noelle Haland

IN. It’s an unusual look – and unlike many here, I do not like these shoes with it – but overall, it’s got a great interest and flair that she’s really working. I LOVE her hair and I think it works well proportion-wise with this outfit.

  • Janet B

    Out, barely.
One piece needs to change; the shoes, the skirt or the top.

  • OUT, I’m with Tom on this one.  It’s just not working and not too flattering either…the darts on the skirt are puckering out in a weird way.

  • mrssage

In. I think this is a fun mix as we work our way out of the misery of late winter. Bring on the April showers Solange!

  • alyce1213

    Risky, but not successful. OUT.

  • OrigamiRose

Out – the pieces just didn’t quite mix well together and the shoes are a bit too much.  Had she gone head to toe in the complete look (first model picture)?  WERQ.

  • IN! Wow, groovy look, chicky poo.

  • Caaro3

    Weird but IN.

  • I think  she looks really cool! Sure, there are minor problems, but damn! Girl can rock a look. In.

  • Jangle57

I don’t like the shoes – they make her legs look heavy and who needs that?  Plus I think the outfit is just stupid looking.  She’s in but the outfit is OUT

  • prettybigkitty

Like the top, think the skirt is cute, and the boos are sassy.  But not loving them all together.  Not terribly flattering, and slightly off-putting.  Out for me.

  • Trisha26

OUT. I want to like it, but that slightly off-white skirt just doesn’t go. I would have loved to see those shoes with the flared white/black skirt and turtleneck. It would be matchy-matchy but I’d still prefer it to this.

  • The original skirt was so much better.  But I’ll give a her a conditional in.

  • belfebe

    IN.  I actually like it.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I personally think that Solange should not be classified as IN or OUT, but FIERCE or FUCKED.  Because as is often the case with The Sol, this is both IN and OUT for me at the same time, but FIERCE.  On a non-Sol or non-Sev any and all this would be OUT but we can’t allow Marchesa to win so I will cast my vote for IN.

  • Nope. Big OUT for me. I dislike every piece, and it should look worse than it does so I give her a bit of credit.

But opentoed boots and clothes that look like they have stains will never be in, to me.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Out.  She’s trying too hard – nothing really goes together.  She just can’t rest on the fact that it’s all black and white, so it matches.

  • Vanja

The three individual pieces are great, but they don’t really go with each other. It’s fifty-fifty for me, but it’s Solange so that tips the balance to IN.

  • jkatkins

Marginal IN.  I see the awkward parts, but overall she rocks it.

  • PrunellaV

This is perfect dressing for the venue. IN.

  • j_anson

Meh. OUT. She should have gone with the original skirt pairing for that top. (The skirt she actually chose seems to awkward to work with anything, including the top it’s actually modeled with.)

  • CatherineRhodes

  • Diego!

IN, but I don’t know why I can’t stand her!

  • MissMariRose

    so IN

  • RebeccaKW

Out.  I like the pieces, but in their original forms.  They do not work well together.

  • luluransom

In, but she should have stuck with the longer skirt. It visually balanced the white shape on the top. Looks out of scale with the shorter skirt.

  • Teri Brinson

OUT. I had to scroll up and down a lot to figure out what was so wrong about this. None of the pieces work together, not even in the quirky, on purpose sort of way. The shapes aren’t good on her shape, and the cream of the skirt with the white on the sweater is bad.  Also the booties that make stumps out of legs- HATE THEM.

  • Rand Ortega

Big IN. She’s a fashion wing walker. Even when she falls, she’s fascinating. I can’t wait to see where her next feat will take her or her fellow lovers of fashion.

  • phrenk

    She looks great, IN.

  • Lilithcat

No, I appreciate the effort but it’s OUT.

The pieces are good individually, but not together.  The white of the shirt clashes with the ivory skirt, and the shoes distract.

  • erinbinek

I love her for trying, but I would rather that she had just worn the whole outfit instead of mixing and matching.

  • I like it, I think these pieces go together better in a mix-and-match than the original pairings. And girl looks as confident as hell.

  • jw_ny

The cloud top was meant to go with the raindrop skirt.  That top with those shoes…she looks like a holstein.

  • Out, although I might like that skirt with a different top and shoes.

  • For unique style in a short and kicky silhouette that flatters her, I’ll allow it. IN!

  • another_laura

I say In.  Notwithstanding that the whites make the skirt look dingy.  I just love her hair and her flair.

  • JasmineAM

IN although I’d wish she’d worn the rain skirt.

  • mike__tv

IN! Even the “too literal” shoes are an in. Overall it’s fun and funky. Actually that’s how I would describe her overall style since funky can mean something awesome and gross.

  • Aurumgirl

I like it.  I think Solange is the one who is following in Tilda’s footsteps–she’s lately choosing all kinds of off-beat, striking clothing and she doesn’t look like any one else.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

  • libraangel

IN, but……she doesn’t have as many clouds or raindrops or whatever those are on the print as there are on the runway skirt, and that one little black blob is in a most unfortunate place on the skirt.

  • Adriana_Paula

By all means, IN.  Though I agree the shoes are a bridge too far.

  • Louise Bryan

    OUT.  I can’t.

  • Synnamin

IN! It’s different and fun and she looks like she’s having a blast

  • Martha Anderson

I far and away prefer the raindrop skirt, which goes with the cloud in the sweater.  If it had been that I would have given big thumbs up

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Out.  Now to numb myself with more painkillers…maybe if I take a second look afterwards I might change my mind.

  • LaSylphide

In. Prefer the raindrop skirt, but I wonder if that style would look as good on her as the one she’s wearing.

And dear god, I loooooove that hair.

  • Pants_are_a_must

It’s not a great outfit, but it’s not an offensive one either. And I love her daring and THAT HAIR. IN for liking reasons.

  • ChelseaNH

Either the shoes are a bridge too far or the skirt is a bridge not far enough.  It doesn’t quite come together.

  • SewingSiren

I’m giving a lower case in for this. I like, but she can, and usually does, do better.

  • IN.  Cute and fun.

  • Alexina04

Like the Fug girls said, it looks like Blue Ivy took to Auntie Solange’s skirt with her crayons. That being said, I think the outfit’s cool enough (and venue-appropriate…she is at the MoMA) to warrant an IN.

  • quiltrx

OUT.  That skirt with that top makes my eye twitch.  Plus, the skirt with that top in the runway look is gorgeous!

And those shoes to me go with something else, but they are terrific shoes.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

    In for that smile alone.

  • Carrieanno

Did she ever get paint bombed up top!  Out.

  • lrhoff

Out, out, out, and (I might not have mentioned) OUT.  Good grief.

  • l_c_ann

Looking too much like the crazy character on The Simpsons.

  • sweet_potato

I like the top with the other skirt.

  • Nonmercisansfacon

IN! Only the shoes are problematic to me. Love the pairing of that top and that skirt, unusual, slightly off-key but cute.

  • Carly Warnock

    In. She is so cool.

  • demidaemon

I like the top. I hate the skirt and the shoes. As always, hair and make-up are fierce. I think, though, that this is OUT, just for the strange pairings and proportions.

  • IN

  • trisker

IN. Wish she’d worn the skirt that went with the top, but she’s always WAY cool.

  • Kirsten Kirsten

Miss Solange is one fashionista who can get away with both not-quite-going-together (skirt vs top) and too matchy (top vs shoes). 100% IN from top to toe..

  • if that’s not an IN im gonna die. IN

  • Terrible_Person

I wish she had worn the original skirt, the shape works much better with that top. And I just can’t with those shoes. So, OUT for this outfit, but I wan to to give her an IN for pure awesomeness (and that hair!)

  • mmc

OUT. I love her so much (spellbound by her hair & smile!) that I have a hard time being impartial. Yes, she takes risks and often wears clothes that are very different in a sea of sameness. However, If I’m honest with myself, I think many of her recent outfits miss the mark in one way or the other.

  • Beverly Kozma

  • Eva_baby

IN. IN. IN.  Love it.  it is cheeky.

  • lilazander

I say Tom bitches too much; she looks very cool.

  • Flora O

She should’a stuck with the raindrop skirt, but otherwise lovely.

  • No. Just no.

  • Out because of those damn stupid shoes. WHY do they have a tiny hole in them?!

  • melanie0866

out.  Just don’t love it.  The cream of the skirt doesn’t go with the stark white on the shoes and top.

  • chitowndg

In – TLO said it best: “work the weird”.

  • joything

Even on the model, my first response was, “That was one helluva seagull flew over you.”

Skirt and shoes are not enough to un-think that.

Which means, this BK says OUT.

  • guest2visits

She’s very pretty – but everything else is a mess. Hated it on the models too.

  • Ugh. OUT. there’s just too much going on here.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

nope.   those whites don’t go such that the skirt looks dirty.  AND it loos like a kindergartner cutout a big cloud and stuck in on he black top with a glue stick.  NO.

  • I don’t think that skirt goes with anything other than the top is was made with because the pattern is so brief on it it looks like smears rather than a pattern.

  • pdquick

It only works on the model because the splotch on the top matches the base color of the skirt. The mix and match doesn’t work. And yes, the shoes are too literal. She’s still gorge, but OUT.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I like the top much better with the original skirt and I haaaaat the shoes. They’re so cowy.

  • ccm800

IN –  better with the orig skirt though.

  • fursa_saida

I think my problem is that every single item has a Point of Interest. If the skirt were blank or the shoes were simpler, I’d be happy. As it is, I’ll say OUT, but I still think she looks good.

  • calimon

I certainly applaud her attempt, but this one misses the mark and falls short. Out.

  • its a little awkward, but its still IN. love her.

  • PeaceBang

I love the top on her and her general fabulousness but OUT. And those shoes are really vile.

  • barbarienne

Yeah, the skirt and top are not working together for me. I’m losing the plot there in the middle. While the top and shoes are indeed too literal together, at least they’re the same story.

Maybe it’s because the skirt is an off-white/cream color, which, next to the stark white in the top and shoes, makes it look like a mistake. “Oh, this skirt used to be white, but I washed it in hard water with something that ran.” Not even Solange can carry that off, IMO.

    Lowercase out from me.

  • J. Preposterice

  • Pterodactyl111

In, but just barely. I don’t like the shoes.

  • altalinda

    Clearly in.

  • PeggyOC

Out.  I love each of the looks in the “runway” version, but these are actually pieces that need to be worn as intended.  They are not gr-animals. And the booties were not a good choice.

  • Jennifer Coleman

I’m not a big pleat on skirts/pants fan, but kudos for the sartorial edge cutting. IN.

  • WhoAreYouWearing

Out for me.  I love all the pieces and how they are paired on the models.  Mixing up the pieces doesn’t give the awesomeness of each its due justice.  I also dislike the “mismatched” whites, for lack of a better way of describing the difference in color between the top and skirt.  The shoes would have been fine if she had paired the top with the originally-paired skirt, even if too literal.  As is, though, they don’t work.  I love her afro, but I think it’s gotten too big — shorten it an inch or two, it would be perfect.

  • Sunshine16

I have to give her an IN simply for that fab head of hair & the workin it smile!

  • oohsparkley!

Out. Just cuz I don’t like it.

  • peachy

OUT…because the skirt’s not whitewhite like the shirt AND the shoes are FUG.

  • she gets a little in from me for the effort and the killer shoes.  not a fan of turtlenecks, and clean white and cream in the same look are just wrong.  would have loved it with the other skirt, perhaps shortened since that’s her look.

  • fashionzombie

OUT. Her silhouette is weird, though the pieces are cute. An unsuccessful mix-n-match.
