IN or OUT: Nicole Richie in Stella McCartney

Posted on March 05, 2013

We can’t help it. We know the Bitter Kittens of our comments section collectively hate everything with Stella McCartney’s name on it and fly into a really amusing rage whenever we ask their opinion on her designs. Hence: we constantly ask their opinions on her designs. We’re such stinkers, darlings.

Now, bite down on something to control the spasms and take a look:

Nicole Richie attends the Stella McCartney Fall 2013 show during Paris Fashion Week.

Stella McCartney Pre-Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Julia Frauche

We don’t hate Stella the way our Precious Unborn Fawns do (Swear to God: we saw this dress on someone at Fashion Week one time and we were shocked at how strikingly pretty it looked in person, which made us think her designs might not be very photogenic), but we can admit that there’s definitely a tendency toward awkwardness in a lot of her work; being goofy just for the sake of being goofy.

We liked this look at first glance. Very fashion-y. Very good choice for someone who knows they’re going to be photographed. We like the shape of it and the way her hair mimics it. We like the mod eyes. We’re not going to complain about sloppy hair and shiny forehead because believe us, major fashion shows are like attending a circus in a subway station. It’s March, so we tend to think a pair of booties makes a better, cuter, more interesting choice than the acceptable and inoffensive shoes she chose. The only real complaint we have is with that bib-like thing on the front of it. This is what we mean by goofy for the sake of being goofy. Stella just can’t leave well enough alone. Still, we’re leaning hard toward an IN just for being so striking.

Vote Now!

IN! It’s a head-turner, that’s for sure!

OUT! Mod Nun!

Michelle Williams’ feather dress intrigued the kittens, but in the end they chose to vote it OUT.

  • meh. that’s about all i can muster. i guess i’m abstaining.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

      I’ll second.

    • Cathy S

This is where I see it. It’s not offensive, but I’m not crazy about the shape.

  • I like this. The fit is slightly awkward, but I think that’s because Nicole is smaller than your average human. IN!

    • JosephLamour

Kinda looks like an apron. IN. (those two statements have nothing to do with each other)

    • Lori

Nicole is tiny, but I’m pretty sure the fit is awkward because it’s Stella McCartney. Almost all her clothes have some sort of wonkiness with the fit. On the long list of reasons why she’s pretty crap as a designer the constant problems with fit are right at the top.

  • Kayceed

Out. An amateur’s interpretation of mod. She should go intern at LV.

    • aeb1986

I was thinking the same thing, it feels like a knock off of the Louis Vuitton that everyone is wearing and I’m sick of seeing.

Also- the side panels having the print horizontally is giving me a migraine.

  • Patricia Gillett

I have a strong desire take her to the beach and change into my swimsuit behind her.

    • kimmeister

Unfortunately, you’d have to be the size of a prairie dog for Nicole Richie to give you any coverage.

  • MilaXX

IN! I don’t hate all Stella designs, you say goofy for the sake of being goofy, I just see the occasional over designed piece. I am shocked that the amoeba dress looks pretty in person, but I’ll take your word for it. I do like this look, it suits Nicole well. I suspect she didn’t do booties because she didn’t want to imitate the runway completely.

    • Agreed.  Most of Stella’s work is just too much for me, but this is okay.  in

  • hughman

You just know the Pope would have worn this is a heartbeat.

  • Alyssa

This is not near as offensive to me as most Stella designs are. I don’t really care for the way the horizontal stripes look under the arms where it connects to the horizontal stripes on the front…it kind of throws the eye. That said, this is a very striking look, and I love the bold black & white stripes. So I’ll call this one an IN, but just know that it will not rid me of my Stella-hate!

  • I like it. IN.

    • kimmeister

  • OUT. This just looks like a knockoff version of the gorgeous Spring 2013 LV collection that seems to be everywhere now.

  • napamich

Uh oh, I think someone forgot to take out the coat hanger.

  • teensmom99

Out but I think Nicole looks prettier than ever so a few bonus points.

    • 3boysful

In a strange way, she looks pretty, but she also looks like those old pictures of girls with HUGE eyes that people used to hang in little girls’ bedrooms in the 1960s.  (Won’t say how I know that . . . . )

  • elemspbee

This is IN. the dress is cute, interesting, but not flawless. It looks thick, and whoever is wearing it (who is that?–is it really nicole richie?) is unable successfully wear the dress. The dress is clearly wearing her.

    Dress itself is IN.

    • Vlasta Bubinka

The dress is in, but Richie (31) looks like she’s auditioning to play Diane von Furstenberg (age 66) TODAY in a made for TV bio-pic. Current pic:ürstenberg

      • janierainie

You took the words right outta my mouth.

      • JP

Yes, this. I can’t even look at the dress, I’m too busy looking at her and wondering if the zombie apocalypse is upon us.

  • DeborahJozayt

If the outfit only looks good when your hands are in your pockets, that’s a design flaw, no?

  • Carla_Charlton

What bib-like thing?  What I see are folds caused by the ill-fitting bust-and-armhole area.

  • tereliz

Out. I want to like it for it’s unique shape and because I’m a sucker for a stripe AND for graphic, mod B&W looks. But something about this dress feels like it’s trying to hard. Can’t sign off.

    • jkatkins

Thanks for saying what I was thinking!  OUT!

  • I can’t get past her Faye Dunaway/Mommie Dearest eyes & eyebrows.

  • Beardslee

IN.  The exception proves the rule.

  • Oh, TLo, you really love to taunt us…. Out with a vengeance!

  • WHAT is up with the fit of the shoulders and upper chest?  I can’t stand Stella McCartney because most of her stuff is so ill-fitting (did she ever learn tailoring AT ALL?) and her fabric choices are routinely bad.  This dress is better than most of her stuff, but that’s not saying a whole lot.

  • dschubba

It’s a hard dress to wear, and she’s not exactly succeeding here. The biggest problem here is the fit; it looks too big on her. I also kind of think this would benefit from a thick belt, even though it would clearly warp the intended paper-doll silhouette.

  • Tatiana Luján

I have a great dislike of Nicole Richie because she always looks too orange, but the dress is fun.
    It’s an IN from me.

  • annieanne

I like it. More flattering than most of her stuff. And Nicole has just the right attitude to pull it off.

  • Wellworn

Out, it looks like she is drowning in dress.   That is my biggest peeve of SMc.  Her clothes don’t flatter or fit.  Here it’s especially bad because not only is there too much dress there, it also looks a few sizes too big (look at the sleeves).  SMc’s clothes might be striking but they don’t look good on people.  Isn’t that kind of important?

  • gabbilevy

    In! Mod nun!

(You guys said that like it’s a bad thing, but I beg to differ!)

  • VioletFem

IN. A little awkward, but still works.

  • lalahartma

    In, for once!

  • In. I really love this. Shocking!

  • leave_Blake_alone

Have to go with IN on this one. It isn’t amazing but it’s good enough.

  • suzq

I’m going to risk my “unborn precious fawn” license on this one and say, “Unabashedly IN!”  Yay, Stella!  Macca would be so proud!

  • OUT. I try to control my Stella dislike, but sometimes she makes it too easy.  Had she done either a vertical or horizontal stripe, I think it would have worked.

  • Snailstsichr

IN. Actually I like it because it looks like a mod nun! Nicole looks great and the dress looks fun. Wonder if I need to take my temperature? I said IN to a Stella dress. Well, it is Lent and I’m trying to be a better person.

  • snarkykitten

seems reminiscent of the LV checker collection. But I’m not gnashing my teeth in disgust so…a tiny mewling “in”

  • In. I have to go cry in a corner now.

  • SewingSiren

Are her eyes the size of dinner plates?

  • altalinda

In.  It looks occasion-appropriate and she’s wearing it well.

  • I vote OUT! on principle alone.

  • libraangel

Well, I hope I’m not the only BK to continue the trend of hating on Stella. I think this is hideous and a definite OUT. Plus on Nicole it looks too big or something

  • Janet B

In, Nicole looks pretty good for a woman wearing Stella McCartney.I always think Stella needs to edit her stuff a bit.

  • Hetha Innis

It’s almost a bit Alice in Wonderland with her big doe eyes, but I think she looks great in this dress. Not sure I’d like it as well on anyone else.

  • schadenfreudelicious

it makes me an even more bitter kitter to have to say it, but IN

  • BayTampaBay

    Not Bad.

  • MarTeaNi

I have no idea why, but I am a getting a serious dose of Uncanny Valley from her in these photos.

  • There’s always something off in Stella McCartney’s designs.  This dress is actually pretty cute, but that thick lumpy seam down the back cheapens it.  Maybe it’s supposed to be a design element, but it comes off as either poor construction or the wrong fabric.

Nothing that expensive should look home-ec, but somehow her stuff always does.

  • Bwin51

  •  MEH. I think the dress has potential, and I get that she’s at a show, and so she might be a bit rumpled, but still, I can’t get past the hair and makeup. I think I like the dress, so it’s a tepid ‘in’ from me.

  • peachy

OUT. the waist sits too low on NR. the model’s fits much better. see how, on the model, the white horizontal band sits just at and above her natural waist? and then on NR, it sits much lower — pulling the eye downward, to the widest part of the dress. just not flattering.

  • melanie0866

I think it’s cute.  But when did Nicole Richie turn 65?

  • Her eyes didn’t always take up 75% of her face, did they?

    • Indigo54

Yeah, she didn’t look like that  years ago when she had a little meat on her bones.

  • warnerave

without even seeing the dress on Nicole, and only by just seeing it’s by Stella..I am already convinced it is an OUT..and it is an OUT indeed!

  • calimon

i am scared and nauseous. OOOOUT.

  • decormaven

No. The dress is wearing her.

  • ashtangajunkie

It’s not my favourite, but she looks pretty great in it. In.

  • I don’t hate it, so I guess that’s an in, albeit a small one.

  • jkatkins

I already said OUT below, so don’t count me twice, but it just occurs to me that she looks like a Bratz doll.

    • Indigo54

ROFLMAO.  Thanks.  Couldn’t think of the dolls name.

  • OUT.  Not a bad dress but far too big in the shoulders on Nicole.  Perhaps if it fit properly it would be an IN.

  • Armhole area is an atrocity.

  • LittleKarnak

  • Indigo54

OUT!!!!  Looks like a rearranged skunk.  OMG get it outta here, quick!  This is just too much dress for little Nikki.  That hair – what the hell happened?

  • OUT. That’s too much dress for her, even if it did fit well. Also, that eyeliner is ridic. And I LOVE eyeliner.

  • PastryGoddess

This almost works.  Maybe if the back and sides were in a chevron pattern rather than the horizontal stripe

  • In_Stitches

Bahahaha, I once criticized an outfit worn by Evan Rachel Wood, calling it a ‘mod nun’ look and Tom and Lorenzo argued that that was exactly why it was fabulous.  While I still think ERW looked a sloppy mess, I’ve gotta give props to Nicole here.Definitely IN.

  • Jangle57

Is this from Stella’s jockey collection? Cause only a small petite woman would wear something with stripes like this.  No, can’t sign off on this – OUT

    • margaret meyers

Jockey silks are so fun.  You should be able to get a fabulous and wearable collection out of that theme — bright, supple, fast, playful.  So why did she design this?

  • When did she age 40 years? I thought the caption was wrong..that’s who?? IN for the outfit (kinda fun, bad fit) OUT for horrific face/make-up/fried hair and enema with a vacumn cleaner expression.   When did she get….ugly?

  • margaret meyers

An ugly dress and old lady makeup.  What could go wrong?

  • i love it!  IN

  • Christy Cricow

Like it a lot, even on Nicole Richie!

  • jw_ny

The goofy bib thing in the front is really awkward in the way it transitions to the rest of the dress and the sleeves.

  • Judy_J

It’s kind of a cute dress, actually, but it just doesn’t look good on Nicole.  OUT.

  • mini_d

In for the dress. Despite the fact that her face looks like it’s made of plastic.

  • Amy

I don’t know, I think I like the actual dress but Nicole’s HUGE, DEAD eyes are freaking me out.

I still guess it’s an IN. God I don’t even know. Nicole, eat a sandwich.

  • mjude

IN even tho it likes a tad big on her.

  • Sara__B

OUT. It’s just too much. Too much eyeliner. Too much eyebrow. Too much dress.

  • AngelaGreen

IN, but only if Nicole promises to eat something.  She looks too skinny.

  • Imasewsure

In I like it and it goes with all of that block plaid we’ve been coveting all year. Still like the hair color on Ms. R too – so glad to see one less bleached blond in Hollywood

  • guest2visits

I don’t know why it reminds me of the deck of cards in Alice in Wonderland. This is nicer than Nicole has looked for the last few posts
but I think this dress is kind of cheap and flappy. Out.

  • in

  • Like most other BKs, I usually really dislike Stella McCartney designs. This one isn’t so bad though, except for the black armpits, which are ugly and break the flow of the dress. It’s like Stella’s caught in her head, caught up in the idea of a design and what sounds good on paper. It blinds her to the real-world outworking of the idea, where things don’t always look good in life.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

I personally love Stella McCartney.  Especially when she designed for Chloe.

  • Call me Bee

Froom this dress, you ought to see why us BKs as a collective do not like Stalla McCartney designs.  THis is ill-fitting and wrong in all the wrong places.  It’s just not esthetically pleasing–in fact–it gives me an headache.  The stingy hair and overdone cat’s eye makeup does not help.

  • BeeBeauNYC

As Frau Klum would say, “I don’t hate this dress.”

  • joancarol

    An upside-down Flying Nun.

  • Trisha26

    OUT! Clara Barton apron.

  • trisker

In.  I don’t love the look, but that’s mostly because of Nicole’s makeup and hair.  Cute dress.

  • Zippypie

    OUT.  Cheerleading NFL referee.

  • OUT. The fashion version of bipolar: horizontal panels in back, vertical in front. No thank you.

  • susan6

In.  I like the dress.  But I wish she’d scrape some of the slap off her face, eat a meal once in a while, and get some rest, ’cause girlfriend looks haggard.

  • spititout

I am just happy that Nicole has a friend to hang on to and carry her; to help move her limp, wan, sickly, brittle self around without her walker.

  • j_anson

Out. But not in a rage-filled way. I just think it does look too awkward to be really chic. Don’t think it particularly flatters Nicole Richie specifically, either.

  • LocMama

Out. It obliterates her shape & Lanvin did it better.

  • conniemd

out. Do not want an apron over shorts and top. Is that why the left leg in the 1st picture looks like there are two hems from two garments, one directly under the other?

  • Lisa Salmon

Out, I don’t like Stella Mccartney, Nicole Ritchie, OR the dress.

  • IN for me, she looks comfortably chic, which I think is the goal during Fashion Week.

  • In, it suits Nicole and doesn’t make my eyes twitch like McCartney usually does.

  • JuliaInBlack

More to like than to hate here – the thing that’s bugging me most is that the black on the side panel looks like it extends onto the sleeve/armpit area.  I am not a sewist so I’m not sure of the right terminology or possible reasoning behind it, but it just looks weird and unnecessary to me.  Doesn’t make me puke overall, though, so IN.

  • formerlyAnon

In for the last photo in which I appreciate the fabric. It was a close call, there’s something wonky looking about the junction of the sleeves and the underarm portion of the dress.

  • ThaliaMenninger

The back looks fine to me. But the front is more mental patient and less fashion, especially with the awful hair. I’m a definite NO.

  • leftcoastpickle

out, the optical illusion is making her wide beyond possibility.

  • prettybigkitty

Out.  Unless she was trying to blend into a striped wallpaper.

  • alyce1213

    OUT. Absolutely everything – out.

  • CatherineRhodes

NIce try, guys, but my vote is OUT!

  • ankali

OUT. I don’t like the way the horizontal panel wraps around all the way to the front.

Also, this is evocative enough of the Louis Vuitton checkered collection that it suffers mightily by comparison.

  • CeeQ

You guys must be in a generous mood cuz she looks shit-tastic here. I’m PMSing right now so there’s probably more edge to that comment than needed but still – horrible.
The front bit is all I can see and it’s like the dress is eating her. I do love the print but the way it’s cut is putting me off. The hair and make-up is disastrous. She has people – surely they can prevent her hair from looking so fug.
    Oh right: OUT.

  • AmeliaEve

OUT. Everything you say is true, but a dress this formal and geometric must fit perfectly or it flops. This is too big for her in the shoulders and it ruins the drape from which everything else must proceed. Sad. I actually like her makeup for a change.

  • l_c_ann

Der Wienerschnitzel uniforms photographed like this in black and white film.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

sorry and I know it’s probably because I’m sending this through my I HATE STELLA filter, but it feels sortof derivative?

  • nicole richie looks like ass because shes nicole richie, but this is a really sharp dress. plus, i generally like stella, so IN!

  • MintaHallWriter

OUT.  Hate the makeup–especially the mod eyes. Don’t think the dress flatters her at all. And the dress–particularly from the bust up–looks about four sizes too big for her. Just Not a good look.  Not Evil but certainly not an in.

  • Anniebet

Marginally  IN. I do think Ms. Richie has an oddly exotic look to her that is fascinating. The dress loses me at the place where the sleeve joins the bodice near the underarm. That’s where Stella’s gimmicky design falls flat for me.

  • IN. I love it, I want it.

  • Nicole is looking very Gloria Vanderbilt-ish.   (Or is it just me?) The dress is marginally good, as you say, for being striking.

  • IN. I think she looks really cute. I’d wear it.

  • Airkisses

TLo, you’re the blogging equivalents of reality show producers when you do this to us! Just trying to stir us up!

Love Nicole, hate the bad-LV-ripoff dress. OUT.

  • H2olovngrl

I think the problem (as in what most of us find irritating) can be summed up thusly: she isn’t the first nor will she be the last person to have her career bought and paid for her by Daddy. See what I did there? You don’t know if I am referring to Stella OR Nicole. It works both ways! Bahahaha!!!

  • traceyishere

    Looks like Vuitton.

  • out

  • ugh bitter is right if michelle was out nicole is definitely out

  • I’ll give this a pass as I saw some Stella ugly fringed, yellow monstrosity floating around the web this week, at least there isn’t any fringe on this.

  • WTH is going on with her eyes? Can’t get past those…

  • Jecca2244

Nicole richie and Jessica Alba are in the same category of “i-don’t know-why-they-are-in-the-front row” for me.

  • IN for the dress, OUT to whatever is going on neck and up.

  • akprincess72

    Do not like!

  • lrhoff

I like it…..wish I could afford to buy it, in fact.

  • Aly Light

I usually hate Nicole Ritchie, and I find her positively inoffensive in these pictures, nay, even pleasant looking. It must be the dress, which thus merits an IN.

  • sleepycat

Looks like a LV knock off from the Spring collection OUT

  • demidaemon

I’m just not feeling it. There is something off with the whole outfit. i feel like it is swallowing her. OUT.

  • mila_8

It looks like a Stella eating a LV! Out- based on fit, looks way too heavy on her.

  • Aurumgirl

It doesn’t fit like a garment, it fits like a box.

  • Louise Bryan

OUT.  I feel like this is a “what was she thinking” moment.

  • IN. I like it. Interesting shape and flattering enough. Did immediately make LV comparisons in my head though.
Also a blog recently called me the Irish Stella McCartney which was awkward so I’m going to give everything by her an IN now and ignore my actual opinion.

  • SugarSnap108

This may be the least offensive Stella McCartney design I’ve ever seen.  And I still don’t like it.  Out (also due to her eye makeup – her lashes are freaking me out slightly.)

  • RuthGo

I can’t put my finger on it but there’s something about this whole look that makes Nicole look like a 50-something who takes good care of herself. It’s not…bad exactly it’s just weird. Like Christina, I’m abstaining.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

  • Nimble27

Have to mention that Nicole smiling over her shoulder is totally channeling Angie Dickinson in her prime. Purr.

  • marilyn

Out.  One of her less offensive creations.  But, it is still awkward looking.

  • barbarienne

My best friend has zero sense of direction. But when she lived in Washington DC, a city which is designed to confound one’s sense of direction, she was able to navigate well. It’s as if the two problems canceled each other out and created something that works.

I leave the idea of how this relates to “Nichole Richie in Stella McCartney” to the reader. A very surprised IN from me.

  • oohsparkley!

I laughed out loud when I saw it, so that’s an out.

  • chitowndg

In, it suits her, and her image.

  • Sweetvegan

In! I’m late, but that’s not stopping me from commenting. The dress would fit better if Ritchie were taller (Separates, Ladies! Separates are great for those of us who are not Amazonian supermodels!)  But overall, it’s an in!

  • Sadie-Ann

I wish the photo was from straight on, I feel like it looks less weird from that angle.

  • kathrineb

Out. I am supposed to love this (mod looks are my THING!) but the hair kills it for me also the eyebrows are troublesome.
Defined brows are great but it looks like these were drawn on with a marker.

  • ccm800

its like a dress unworn stapled to the dress she’s wearing OUT
