IN or OUT: Freida Pinto in Proenza Schouler

Posted on March 27, 2013

It’s funny. We picked this look early this morning in order to trash it, and looking at it now, we have no idea why.

Freida Pinto attends Proenza Schouler Capsule Collection Launch Party in London. Freida is wearing a dress by Proenza Schouler paired with Rupert Sanderson sandals.

Sure, that’s a whole hell of a lot of look to pull off, and we’re not entirely sold on the neckline for her. But we don’t know.. she looks pretty cute to us. It helps that the shoes are really funny and that her hair and makeup look fantastic. This isn’t a dress or color for a lot of ladies, but we think she’s doing a pretty decent job of making it work. We think we like it better in the blue, though.

  • I like the neckline and I think it complements her skin tone. I’m gonna say IN!

  • butterflysunita

Easy IN. A beautiful, unusual dress that she is completely carrying off.

  • Sobaika

I’m appreciating this. She usually doesn’t go too edgy and it’s in a color very few could pull off. In!

Off to get myself a parrot shoe.

    • Qitkat

I would put that shoe on my mantel, it is so delightful.

  • Catiline

Where it cuts across the hips/thighs isn’t doing it for me, but that color is amazeballs on her, and the hair/makeup is flawless. IN.

  • Christine Marie

It looks like brûléed orange oil paint

  • Oh, IN. She looks like fire (a sexy fire, not one that causes destruction and mayhem), and I prefer the orange to the blue. I question the “entire real life skeptical woman” handbag attachment, though.

  • Rachael

IN! She looks fabulous and I want those shoes!

  • lovelyivy

IN. I am not a huge fan of the seaming on that skirt, but the color and the shoes seal the deal for me.

  • In. Super cute.

  • In. That color is gorgeous on her and I love the whimsical shoes.

  • Gloriana Reginata

In – I love the warmth of the colour with her skin-tone, and although the neckline is a little harsh, it’s much better than that pool of black almost drowning the model.

  • Kathy_Marlow

IN, she looks fantastic ( the hair on top needed smoothing or volumizing so it all matches but still)

  • IN. I like it, though I don’t think I’m supposed to…

  • hmariec19

I’ll say IN. Not wild about that weird seam across her thighs though.

  • Jessi03

I dislike it from the front, but love it from the side. IN for being fun!

  • sablehunter

Big fat IN for me. Kinda tacky but i love kinda tacky.

  • SassieCassy

something about the fabric is coming across as DIY to me but she is making it work

  • mellbell

In, mostly because the fiery colors of the dress look wonderful against her skin, but also because the shoes are cracking me up.

  • Janet B

The only reason I can think of for my lack of enthusiasm is that she’s dressed for summer (aka pre-fall).

  • In. I love that she removed the black dickie looking piece at the neck. Much improved from the model.

  • IN. I love the print of the dress, and the shoes are adorable!

  • ashtangajunkie

Those shoes make me happy! They’re very funny.

  • stagmania

IN. Very few ladies could make that color work, but she’s managing.

  • PastryGoddess

OUT I prefer the blue. The orange looks like scorched cheddar cheese

    • j_anson

You say that as if it’s a BAD thing! 😀

      • PastryGoddess

On Pizza, I like scorched cheese. On Frieda…not so much

    • DeborahJozayt

She just wanted to match the furniture….

  • Introspective

In because she’s gorgeous. the dress is a great color but a boring shape. but again, that face does the heavy lifting.

  • out: too many panels and the textile design looks like sooty firelight

  • RebeccaKW

In. The blue is pretty, but I’m glad she didn’t wear the turtleneck dickey thing. The orange is pretty great with her coloring though.

  • crash1212

IN. I think it works on her although I’m not sold on the shoes. Her version is infinitely better than the model version, which makes her look like she’s been in an accident and they tried to give her the “pretty” neck brace.

  • MilaXX

IN! I prefer this color over the blue. It feels more like summer.

  • newtonGOTbeaned

I seriously love this dress. The color looks amazing on her, and he neckline is doing nice things for her boobs. IN.

  • IN. It’s a cute dress, and she wears it well….but it was really the shoes that sold me. Love the parrot!

  • She looks gorgeous. IN.

  • VioletFem

IN. I love the color on her she would have just as good in the blue, but I’m glad she picked the orange-y dress because I think few actresses could pull off this fiery color. This dress works well with her skin tone. The shoes are super cute and go well with dress without being overly match-y.

    • capybara_cafe

It is a great color on her. I personally like the blue best, but I think the orange is better on her. I’m just in love with the fabric. I keep looking at it and thinking of what I could make with it, lol.

    • drdarke

IN – I can see why you thought you should hate it, but the color works well with her skin tone, and despite the boxy bodice it looks comfortable and flirty.

Shoes are a subtle wink at the whole ensemble, and work nicely with it….

  • IN. I love the color on her and just love those shoes! She looks good.

  • j_anson

The shape is odd on her but the color is amazing and I actually like the neckline. So, IN.

  • I’m actually LOVING that orange–very Katniss Everdeen chic.

Please don’t hurt me for using that phrase.

  • gabbilevy

IN! Wish there were more angles/better light, but it looks gorgeous on her.

  • Monabel

    No argument, In.

  • Kenisha Hill Phillips

In. The color is compelling and the shoes are whimsical.

  • IN

  • Jacqueline Wessel

IN. She looks great…so glad she didn’t wear the turtle neck dickie.

    • MoreShoes

I agree. IN. And I love the shoes.

  • NDC_IPCentral

I think the black high neck on the original gives the dress a less conventional look; the orange version just has a long vertical rectangle that makes the neckline a lot less interesting. I prefer the blue, too; that color (though the orange works for her) would have been super on Ms. Pinto with her caramel coloring.

  • Sue_Asponte

    Love it. In.

  • Cathy S

IN. I think she looks fabulous. The blue is really nice but I think she’s carrying off that color really well.

    • Donna Tabor

Yes, and not many of us could.

  • tereliz

IN! I don’t normally like dresses with a seam across the hip area, but it turns the skirt into a fun trumpet shape and the color is so great on her. Plus, fun shoes and a beautifully made-up face.

  • IN but with points deducted for the tacky applique parrots.

  • Lilithcat

That is a fabulous color on her. And the shoes are utterly delightful.

  • IN! I love the color, and the shoes are awesome. And I’m so glad she didn’t go with the turtleneck thingy that the model is wearing.

  • At first I thought she had an adorable mini-pillbox hat, and then I realized it was just the sconce in the background. Awww.

Still, I like it – I wish the straps were a little thinner and the neckline a little wider, but it looks fine to me. IN.

  • She’s werqing this! In!

  • Le_Sigh

IN! I like the fun shoes and the fun color.

  • Sarah D

  • Qitkat

As a fabric/fiber junkie, I’m dying to know what the fabrics are and how they are created. The link said something about photo prints of watery caves. I want to know how to do that.
Love these. Siriano did some gorgeous photo print dresses a few seasons ago. But TLo are right, not the most flattering neckline.

    • capybara_cafe

Agreed, I am in love with this fabric.

  • Jangle57

    It’s ok – IN

  • In! I like the color on her a lot.

  • PrunellaV

Very few women could make that dress and that color work, but she does it. IN.

  • anotherkate

In! Love the shoes, love the color on her, love the kicky little skirt. She’s pulling it all off.

  • Imasewsure

I’m not loving the dress at all. Hair, makeup and shoes tip it slightly to In but not by much. We need an In, Out and “No Contest” vote option

  • Sara__B

I love the color on her, but not the silhouette. This is a hard one . . . more IN than out, I guess.

  • IN.

  • Tamara Hogan

    LOVE IT.

  • Joyce VG

IN! Bright, fun and sexy as TLo says.

  • IN.

  • Yeah, I don’t like the cut (it’s different than the model). I also think the blue would have looked better on it. I’m gonna go with out.

    • capybara_cafe

The cut on the model’s is definitely better.

  • fringebenefit

IN. Borderline, but IN. Better in blue, as TLo observes. There’s something painfully harsh about the glaring rusty orange, but her personal softness is mitigating that edge.

  • capybara_cafe

In! The cut of the skirt on the model’s version is much better, but I am IN LOVE with that fabric, in both colors. It is a wee bit of a boob smasher dress, but I still like it.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I think the color is gorgeous on her. I am not sure the blue would be as striking. I am thankful she had the neckline altered, but I don’t like the seams on her dress, I think the blue dress’s seaming looks more classic and would better balance this shock of color, which probably only someone as breathtakingly gorgeous as Frida could wear.

  • barbarienne

She looks better in the 3/4 shot than the head-on photo, so maybe that’s what threw you off?

While I personally like the blue color better, this color is really great on her, so bonus points to her for choosing to rock a color that not everyone can wear. Also, while the neckline isn’t awesome for her (maybe a bit too narrow?) at least she isn’t wearing the turtleneck version, which makes the model look like she’s wearing a Howard Wolowitz dickie.

She looks cute. I say IN.

  • ankali

Dear God, the 70s had hotel bathroom wallpaper like that?

IN, though. She looks cute. The neckline is a little apron-y, but I find this is a really accessible design from Proenza Schouler.

  • marilyn

Barely out. I like the neckine on her dress a lot better than the one with a dickie in it that the runway model wore. But, the dress is too tight, especially on the skirt. So, the print not being matched just screams at you. If she had a looser skirt, like the runway model, the unmatched print might not be so obvious. Also, there is a greater contrast in colors in her dress. The colors in the runway dress are dark and closer in intensity, so the fact that the prints are unmatched is not so noticeable. Not matching prints is amateurish and/or cheap. When people pay a load of money for these designer dresses, matching the print should be done.

  • Trisha26

IN. That gold/black coloring looks great on her. I prefer the dress (not color) on the model, a semi-pleated look, not this cray seaming and flared skirt, but she’s pulling it off. HATE the “too cute” shoes.

  • IN. Great color on her.

  • PeggyOC

In, The color is fab, I love that she ditched the silly cravat/turtleneck thing, and those shoes are just to irreverent not to love. It’s not the best outfit for her body I’ve ever seen, but yeah, it’s pretty good.

  • Damien W

I prefer the hot gold/rust print to the blue, actually. The neckline is wrong for an up do, there should be some hair falling around the shoulders with that cut. Otherwise, wear it in good health.

  • E. D.

IN. But I agree that the blue would have looked even better.

  • Melizmatic

While I could never pull off that shade of orange (or any shade of it, for that matter) she looks MAHvelous, darling!

Good call on the neckline, though; that’s the only aspect I’m not digging.

The way it’s tailored, it really should have been a v-neck or maybe a shallow scoop neck.

  • Kirsten Kirsten

IN. Extra points for working that fierce orange that few could pull off.

  • Fordzo

Not to sound like a Jewish bubbie, but, “Honey. When are you and that nice boyfriend of yours going to get married and make some babies?”

I love Frieda (and Dev) and I think this color is beautiful on her. I like the dress in blue, but I don’t think that color would have looked as striking on her.

  • she looks good. she has the perfect skin tone for it and the makeup is amazing.

  • ampg

I’m getting kind of a “Halle Berry before she started trying too hard” vibe. I mean that as a compliment. IN.

  • flamingoNW

I love it, especially the neckline. The skirt is less flattering, IMO, but it works. IN

  • rumcg66

    IN. It works.

  • jw_ny

Love the color, shape, and overall she looks pretty. The parrot on the shoe is kinda kitschy tacky…fun for a party.

  • Zippypie

OUT. Hate the color and what it’s doing to her skintone, in contrast to many of the other BKs. I think I would love it on her in the blue. This is the color of cat vomit.

  • Airkisses

IN on the color alone! Also: She has a parrot on her ankle, y’all.

  • conniemd

In. Not crazy about the dress, but no reason to blanch at the look either.

  • MzzPants

It IS 70’s wallpaper, but it’s also pretty fab. IN.

  • MandyM

I love the neckline. Before I scrolled down and read your comments, I actually thought how great that neckline looks on her and that it was a hard one to pull off. I vote in!

  • Bailey Debruynkops

love the dress and the hair is ideal. In

  • There’s a problem in the hip area, but other than that, she looks fabulous. IN!

  • MoHub

I like it! In fact, I’d give it a WERQ.

  • In! Those shoes alone!

  • formerlyAnon

    IN. No question.

  • Anniebet

IN. But you’re right, TLo, the blue would have been fantastic on her. Those shoes are whimsical and cute. Not so sure about the hair, something softer would be nice.

  • carolynmo

In! I really like it. And the shoes.

  • CarrieO

The dress looks fantastic without the dickey that the model seems to be wearing. In.

  • Hetha Innis

I LOVE those colors on her!

  • OrigamiRose

In. I feel like she’s one of the few who could pull this off, but that she does, incredibly well.

  • fursa_saida

IN. And I think that color is great on her (though it might look even better on a darker-skinned lady). I agree it would be better if the neckline were more trapezoidal (oh lord I’m so nerdy, I mean if it were the same at the top but wider across the bottom–but with the same sharp angles. I could be biased, though, as I love that neckline on myself.)

  • SorayaS

In for the shoes alone! Plus that colour looks fantastic on her so I’ll forgive the weird cut. Plus, perfect makeup.

  • zelavie

  • Louise Bryan

It would be an IN for the shoes alone, but the color is great on her, even if the seams and neckline are not so much.

  • CatherineRhodes

  • in!

  • What’s not to like? IN!

  • VicD

    This is good – IN

  • librarygrrl64

Middling. The dress works on her, but she needs at least one piece of jewelry, and I HATE the shoes.

  • Jessica Goldstein

IN: Gorgeous color on her. (I’d look like I was on a liver transplant wait list, so I appreciate this most of all.) Pretty and fun shoes. Improved neckline. Plus I just like her.

  • IN! Love the parrot shoes!

  • NoGovernmentName

Oh, total IN. I like her version more than the model’s, and that color is amazing on her. I would almost call this a WERQ, I like it that much.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

  • she’s so gorgeous. i can hardly see her clothes over her beauty.

  • poggi

I like the blue but agree that it was smart to wear the orange because na-na-na-na-na she CAN. I think every once in a while you should wear something just to spite your friends.

  • lizajane1776

In! Those shoes add a touch of whimsy.

  • H2olovngrl

I love it. And her shoes are seriously cutsie wootsie.

  • Sally Brownson

I kind of hate the color (remember that dress Latrice wore that got Santino in a snit? Isn’t this the same color), but honestly, she looks pretty good despite that. In!

  • alyce1213

In. Excellent dress for her, great shoes.

  • demidaemon

I’m torn. Clearly, her edits and color choices are infinitely better than the model’s. And her head is tres awesome. But. I’m just not in love with the shiny fabric or the collar detail. Still, she looks pretty good…so IN, by a hair (literally!).

  • IN. I love the color, the hair, the shoes. Gorgeous.

  • Verascity

    Looks good to me. IN.

  • looks nicer at an angle than straight on

  • bringbackbeatles

IN. Everything looks good to me!

  • carolie_king

Look at her face! She’s pleading with us to not trash her! IN.

  • VeryClaire

    IN. Love the neckline.

  • ballerinawithagun

Love the dress, glad she didn’t wear the dickey. Why does everyone like the shoes??? Just go to JoAnn’s and buy a stick on pre-made applique. Way too DIY.

  • Carol

That’s a tough dress to pull off, but she’s doing it. Love the shoes and makeup! IN.

  • f_yeah_marie

IN…I think she looks really good, and I love the color!

  • Pants_are_a_must

IN. The cut of the dress is admittedly weird, but the color is SO hers. And the shoes are perfect for this.

  • Erica_Vuitton

IN love everything about this look!

  • In.

  • Beautiful. She looks *amazing* in rich colors.

  • Jessica O’Connell

I think she looks fantastic and she wouldn’t be wrong to wear that color everyday forever. It’s gorgeous on her! IN!

  • amaranth16

Gorgeous. Love the color. Little skirt is so flippy and fresh and I love the neckline. The shoes are a witty touch.

  • Samantha Irene

I also think the blue would be better, but I can’t say she looks bad, and the shoes are so cute! IN

  • Carly Warnock

In. She obviously has a good sense of humour (the shoes) and that colour is stunning on her.

  • Kathleen B

    IN. I love her.

  • GorgeousThings

That’s one of those necklines that looks good at 3/4, but not right head-on. I love that color – I wish I could wear it. And I LOVE those shoes!

  • ThaliaMenninger

That dress is on fire. And not in a good way. It looks like what casino staff (at tacky cheapo casinos) wear. The print, I mean. I think the square neckline is the only thing I DO like. Oh well.

  • IN! I think she’s totally carrying it off as a new facet of her own aesthetic tastes. It’s not perfect, but it is pretty damn good!

  • Hello there, Miz Pinto, please share your styling secrets with me because WOW. IN IN IN IN IN.

  • IN. Beautiful
