IN or OUT: Anna Kendrick in Marissa Webb

Posted on March 11, 2013

Tweed short-shorts or no, we’re going to declare this outfit a win.

Anna Kendrick poses attends the premiere of ‘Drinking Buddies’ during the 2013 SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas in Marissa Webb.

Marissa Webb ‘Juliana’ Tweed Jacket

Sure, the very idea of tweed short-shorts seems ridiculous and counter-intuitive, but that jacket is simply killer. And we have to admit, the shorts make an unexpected lower half. Instead of a scrolldown fug, it’s a scrolldown pleasant surprise.

Now, be assured, if she was on a premiere red carpet or some sort of more formal industry event, we might not be so kind toward Anna’s tweed shorts, but this is SXSW and a certain level of casualness and frivolity is to be expected. She could’ve showed up in something a lot less interesting than this, but she chose something guaranteed to turn heads in that setting. Points off for the bag clashing, but half a pointed added back in because it’s a kickass bag.

No, we’re definitely going for IN on this one. It’s fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously, while still being a little fierce.

Vote Now!

IN! Love it! Sassy and unexpected!

OUT! Hate it! Goofy and cheap-looking!

The Bitter Kittens saluted Solange’s similarly unexpected outfit, but in that case, they wound up voting her OUT.

  • IN! Usually not a fan of shorts & heels, but this is sassy & cute!

  • miagain

  • ugh, out

  • Susan Sontag

Yuck, i prefer Emma Stone’s tip to toe Lanvin.

  • aeb1986

love anna kendrick but im not a fan of this outfit. maybe in a different color but she seems washed out to me and im not crazy about the shorts…gonna have to go with an out on this one. something about it is throwing me off.

  • Its too early in the year for so much leg. OUT!

    • Sobaika

I was going to say something about weather in Texas but apparently it’s only in the 40s there? Hmmm.

      • aly_d

Nah it was definitely in the 70’s all weekend, she was not the only one in shorts!

        • Sobaika

Good! I checked this morning and was surprised that TX could have the same weather as NYC.

          • aeb1986

I live in Austin but am from NYC so I spent the weekend making my dad feel bad about our weather in the 70s!

    • Eclectic Mayhem

      Even in Austin, TX?

      • ballerinawithagun

Austin weather, as in most of the U.S. can be unpredictable at this time of year. The only time I attended SxSW, it was in the 90s, so even tweed would have been miserable.

  • In. My girl crush is showing.

  • Kirsten Kirsten

(Despite the awkward pose in the 1st photo) I’m giving this a definite IN. It’s cute and snazzy, venue appropriate and imaculately fitted.

  • IN!

  • It needs the shorts to rescue it from political-wife-at-fundraising-lunch – which they do successfully. She looks cute. IN.

    • StellaZafella

Spot on. I like the idea…but, to make it work for me, I’d just as soon see the tweed be a big ol’ bold houndstooth or even an over-scaled herringbone…something more graphic and intentional. There’s something about this particular tweed that’s too understated for making such a bold fashion statement.

      •  She’s too tiny for a bold check. IN from me!

  • MilaXX

IN – she looks cute. Hate the bag, btw, but otherwise she looks good.

  • I love her, and I would have killed over that outfit back when I was a wee thing young enough to wear formal short-shorts and not feel like an ass. So big in from me.

(However, it might’ve gotten a bigger in with slightly different hair and some kind of crazy tights, but that’s mostly because I would like to think crazy tights are something Anna and I will bond over when we’re imaginary best friends)

  • What’s wrong with the bag? (not rhetorical)

    • MilaXX

It looks like a regular pocketbook that someone removed the straps from and she’s carrying like a clutch. That’s why it’s too thick. It doesn’t go and I think she would have looked better not carrying a bag at all.

    • Anathema_Device

I like the bag. Might not be perfect for the outfit, but I don’t think it is a total misfire or anything.

  • Super_Red

I… actually really like this. The only thing that bugs me is the gap with the button in the jacket, but this is super cute. In!

  • Meg0GayGuys6

A very IN! But what’s going on towards the top closure of the jacket?

  • lobsterlen

IN. I love the green leather accent.

One minor observation. Maybe the shorts could have been a tad longer?

  • Introspective

the suit fits her really well and is too cute. the piping is just the right pop of color for her especially as a redhead. makes me excited for spring… IN.

  • IN, although I would’ve worn a shirt under that jacket…it looks like it would be itchy!

    • lobsterlen

Maybe that’s it … the shirt completes the look. When you look at the suite on the Barney’s page you see the shorts have green leather piping too. Very cute.

    • My thoughts too. The skin showing at the waistline takes it a little over the naughty secretary edge for my liking.

  • Little_Olive

Meh. I’ll admit the outfit is cute but the shorts are too short and long sleeve + short shorts does not make sense to me anyway.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

IN.  And check out Pitch Perfect if you haven’t already.

  • Sobaika

I give this an In, it’s very cute and unexpected. Probably itchy in all the wrong places though.

  • a cautious small case in.  Mostly because that snap on the jacket front at her bustline looks like its about to lose the battle.

    • Sobaika

I noticed that too, and considering it’s not exactly tight on either side of her bust, it speaks more to construction.

      • The jacket is badly fitted on her, actually. And you’re right that that closure should not be able to do what its doing.

    • kimmeister

I wonder if she did that on purpose just to let everyone know she was braless?

  • SugarSnap108

In. LOVE that jacket.  I think I’d like it more with a shirt underneath, but overall this pretty sharp.

  • l_c_ann

Austin deserves better and not that many folks in Austin who are blind attend film festivals.

  • Eva_baby

    In.  I think it’s cute.

  • ashtangajunkie

    Cute! IN.

  • Mmm, no. It’s an OUT for me, I had the opposite scroll down effect than you did. If anything, I was thinking “this is nice but a little too formal…” and then the shorts made it go into schizo territory.

  • Nope, sorry. It’s an OUT from me.

  • AuntJentie

out.  Just can’t warm up to anyone wearing short shorts.  Plus her hair is so limp, and I want to push it out of her face.

    •  Can’t believe I went this far down the page, reading comments, and I’m pretty sure yours was the first one that mentioned her limp hair.  Thank you!

  • IN! I think it’s super cute.

  • Lizzyisi

In, but she needs a shirt or a tank.

  • margaret meyers

Out.  Hate the grey.  Why is this playful, cute little look in GREY?

  • IN..but barely. My only quibble is that the shorts are a touch too short.

  • 3boysful

You’re right–the jacket is pretty fierce.  But, it’s Chanel-ishly conservative, and the clutch is kinda serious, and put those next to short-shorts, and it’s a WTF.  So, OUT.  Also, because finishing an outfit that hilights your nice legs with ankle strap shoes is wrong.

  • IN. J’adore on this sassy little nymph.

  • MarissaLG

    Love it! So sassy!

  • barbarienne

I could do with out the sloppy keyhole. I think the tweed fabric creates a roughness that doesn’t support a delicate detail like that.

The shorts are genius, and the styling on the jacket (other than the keyhole) is awesome. It certainly doesn’t hurt that it all fits her perfectly.

But aside from that, today I am wearing a top of that exact same green, with gray jeans. Therefore my regular “Yes, this is great, IN” becomes a “FUCKING GENIUS INNNNNN!!!!!!”

  • jw_ny

If the top is something that Barbara Bush would wear, it should not be worn by someone her age, nor with shorts on the RC,

  • Janet B

Am I seeing her chest through the jacket gap?

  • BayTampaBay

    IN!!! due to venue appropriate!

  • Susan Sontag

Like a burlap short-shorts suit with unfinished edges?  It’s scroll every which way fug.  I’m off to pop a prozac, just from looking at it.

  • schadenfreudelicious

the jacket is a firm IN, but the shorts look like they would chafe…and paired with the ankle strap shoes she looks a bit like an usher or cigarette girl…so i split my vote, IN for top, OUT for bottom 🙂

  • In, work those legs, lady!

  • Tatiana Luján

    I hate “formal” shorts. Out.

  • EEKstl

    IN, totally.  She looks adorable.

  • Love her. She looks great!

  • jmorino08

I’m going to go with in, but she needed to wear something under it. I’m certainly not a prude, but where the hooks pull across her midsection is giving me OCD twitches!

  • CPK1

adorable, although I wish the shorts were just tiny weeny bit longer. Just a smidge.

  • Anna Tree

Hate the hair, hate the clutch, hate the shorts. OUT.

  • beebee10

    IN looks sassy

  • Louise Bryan

Weird.  I don’t like the hose or shoes she’s got on; they make the whole thing seem a bit too provocative to my mind.  I would have liked the shorts to be a tad longer., and if the clutch looked a little more like an i-Pad case or netbook case, it would have been more fitting.  I love the jacket, no complaints there.  The hair…not so much.  Weighing, weighing….coming down on OUT.

  • I get what you’re saying but it’s OUT for me. The jacket doesn’t fit her well and the shorts are just a tiny bit too short. Good effort though.

  • PeggyOC

Hate.  Out.  It’s not her, it’s that I can’t get behind the “business on top, Hooters on the bottom” look.

  • Pants_are_a_must

I love Anna Kendrick, but I don’t love this outfit. The bag, though, is what makes it a complete OUT for me. Who the hell thought a travel toiletries bag is an acceptable accessory anywhere that’s not a suitcase?

  • iheartbuffy

IN. So Cute. I also dig without a blouse underneath. Brings unique sex appeal.

  • Jennifer Coleman

IN, but is it a little big on her?
And I love me some Marissa Webb.

  • CurbGirl

IN. Perfectly matched to the SXSW venue or actually, in Austin.

  • Annabelle Archer

It reminds of a TV anchor. Business up top, party on bottom.  Because, hey, you’re sitting behind a desk, who cares?

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Out.  Sorry, I hate formal shorts.

  • In. Weird, but In.

  • Peeve

Nope. Not a fan at all. And that spaniel hair is making me stabby. There’s something about this tweed I really don’t like, and I normally like tweeds. I agree with a previous post that a houndstooth would be better.

  • Jangle57

Shorts are just a tad too short for me – it looks like if she bent over even a little, her butt cheeks would be totally exposed.  OUT

  • kategs

    good lord no.

  • stubbornthoughts

I like this and love her, but I would’ve LOVED to have seen a fun blouse under the jacket. A little too bland without something there. The democracy of the voices in my head declare this an IN.

  • tired_mommy

In–she has the perfect age/body to pull it off.

  • GorgeousThings

It’s barely an IN, because of the shoes. They are too delicate for that look. It just misses being an OUT because of the shoes and the hose.

  • Jessica O’Connell

All in all I like it, though I wish she was wearing a shirt under the jacket. Still, it is surprisingly cute so I say IN.

  • alyce1213

OUT OUT OUT. Nancy Reagan in hot pants.
    With bad accessories.

  • Anathema_Device

I see your point, but I still have to vote Out. I just don’t like “dressy” shorts. Jacket & bag are fab, though.

  • marilyn

Out.  Tacky and odd looking.  The green on the jacket looks horrid.  It is too tight for her and is slighly gaping open.  Not suitable fabric for this design.  However, color is generally good for her.  Shoes don’t work.  Is she trying out for Mr. Blackstone’s Worst Dressed List?

  • CeeQ

I have to vote OUT because the shorts were not a pleasant scroll down, it was a thud for me. Everything else was so great (jacket, hair, make-up. not the bag, it’s too clumsy) and then she tripped on the finish line with those shorts. Elegance on top, skank on the bottom. A Fashion Fug Mullet, if you will.

  • So IN!!!  She’s always in since “She’s fucked.  I’m ready.  And the goddamned show must go on.  So shall we?”.

  • Kayceed

Eek! This is a big ole out for me. It is strangely drab and unsexy, despite the attempted sassiness of pairing short-shorts and heels.

  • librarygrrl64

IN. It’s cute and it fits her beautifully.

    • margaret meyers

It does fit her well, and is making the most of her young figure… but that grey fabric with the unfinished hems coupled with the cheap-looking green trim is unbearable.

  • kimmeister

The clothes are in, but the hair looks terrible.

    • decormaven

Another vote for IN outfit, but OUT hair. If you have a cute outfit, why bring it down with that wah-wah hair?

      • Rebecca Zmarzly

Probably not her fault. The humidity in Austin went from 0 to 99% in the space of about two days. My hair has been doing cracktastic stuff for a week now, ranging from magic house electricity ball to 1930’s finger waves all on its own. And that’s not even compensating for the wind factor. Therefore, from personal experience, I’m willing to give her a pass on the hair.

  • prettybigkitty

Tweet shorts!   And the top doesn’t fit her properly.   I just can’t.  Out.

  • Annie Chen

IN love the bright green trim.

  • Meh. It’s all right.

  • Missy Covington

IN: Yes. This is super cute. If I had the body for it, I would covet it so much.

  • IN, cause it’s SXSW…but I don’t really like the profile of the hot pants…the proportions seem off.

  • Sara__B

    OUT. Enough said.

  • Imasewsure

Like the idea but not the result OUT

    • mmc2315

This.  Needs something under jacket.  The pulling closure makes it look cheap.

  • lilibetp

This is really cute.  Can’t imagine it being comfortable sitting through movies in shorts that short, though – movie theatre seats tend to be textured.

  • RebeccaKW

    In.  It really is cute.

  • trisker

You hit the nail on the head, TLo — “goofy and cheap looking.”  I love her, but OUT anyway.

  • Rebecca Zmarzly

Even though I’m loathe to give an IN to someone at a SXSW event (there’s a reason no one local is driving south of 183), it’s a pretty kickass outfit. I love the green piping on the jacket.

  • i adore her, in.  her twitter is hilarious.

  • OrigamiRose

OUT.  “Goofy and cheap looking” can’t be topped.

  • unbornfawn

Nope. Not signing on to the tweed shorts. OUT.

  • DiverK

Out.  Sorry, but shorts and high heels are hooker wear.

  • carolie_king

No on bag, no on shoes, no on scraggly hair.  Liked it better with the blouse.  Cute idea, but OUT.

  • Kate4queen

    In, surprisingly!

  • Aly Light

I just don’t like that color combo on her. OUT.

  • i’m going to say IN, even though I need more fun hair. But everything else is cute.

  • snarkykitten

anything sponsored by Miller Lite needs a different approach to style.

    I like it!

  • VioletFem

IN. Fun and cute, although I’m not crazy about the hair.

  • I don’t care what Pantone thinks that Girl Scout emerald green they keeep pushing for 2013 is fugly

  • WhoAreYouWearing

I LOVE the jacket, and the shorts are cute and unexpected.  That being said, however, I wish she would have worn something underneath it, even tucked a scarf around her neck.  Not crazy about her hair and her shoes, either.  So, taken as a whole, I have to vote: out.

  • Cute and flattering. Plus, given her Amy Adams-like aversion to color, the green trim on this is a big step forward for her. I say In!

  • Trisha26

    OUT. OUT. OUT.

  • CatherineRhodes

OUT. It looks passable with the blouse on the model, but as shown, it looks like something Macklemore would have picked up at the thrift store. Maybe another starlet could have made it work, but Anna Kendrick doesn’t have enough sass to pull it off. Did I mention, OUT?

  • AmeliaEve

Another lower-case in. It’s a really odd outfit, and I don’t like the way the jacket gaps, but it’s kind of perfect for this venue and she looks pretty and comfortable in it.

  • kaycem

  • poggi

I wish she had played up her hair and face and accessories more–made it all more fun and sassy–but in.

  • Alyssa

In…spoken as a non-fan of formal shorts. Here, they make the outfit fun & youthful to offset the jacket. Without them this would probably be too business-y.

  • Jack Smart

so bizarre and amazing – IN!

  • tereliz

In! If anyone can rock a tweed shorts suit, it’s Anna. The trim and open collar keep the jacket looking modern with the shorts instead of veering toward cigarette/cabaret girl territory. She’s adorable and tiny enough that the shorts don’t look vulgar (especially for the venue) and the green trim is perfect for her coloring. Definitely a win.

  • Monday1900

It’s weird…but still an in from me.

  • conniemd

I’m surprising myself by saying IN since I’m not  fan of shorts on the runway for the most part unless it’s a resort wear show.

  • TSkot

    way too short:  OUT

  • IN! sound of Music!

  • GTrain

  • IN! This is the classiest way I’ve seen a starlet deal with our southern hellish heat and humidity.

  • MissFern

I hate disagreeing with my uncles but I just CAN’T with this.

  • another_laura

    Nope.  Out.

  • Coco Cornejo

Chanel meets hot pants? No, no, no. OUT!

  • elephantasmagoric

In. I love the purse and green highlights.

  • melanie0866

    OUT, OUT, OUT.

  • In. I love her AND I think she looks really adorable here. Wish I could get a better look at the ring. I think it’s probably fabulous.

  • Dagney

  • lizlemonglasses

“Sure, the very idea of tweed short-shorts seems ridiculous and counter-intuitive…” I’m gonna stop you right there. Resounding out.

  • crash1212

IN. I started following her on twitter, and this seems to suit her personality to a T. Perfect outfit for the event.

  • Judy_J

As much as I love that jacket, I’m giving this an OUT.  I hate heels with shorts.  I’d give her an IN if she’d worn flats or a cute little sandal.

  • Beverly Kozma

    I hate it.

  • EditKitten

    Full-out scrolldown fug. OUT.

  • Meri Aust

    IN! Cute and different.

  • maggiemaybe

    EEEK! Scroll down fug!

  • altalinda

Are there taps on those shoes?  In.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Don’t don’t don’t DO NOT Like short shorts! But this outfit is killer cute and she’s rocking it. In.

  • butter nut

IN she’s killing it & she knows it.  on anyone else, this would be stupid, but it’s adorable on this girl.

  • MzzPants

  • MissAmynae

This was even more adorable in person. She is the sweetest, and let us take many, many pictures.

  • sleepycat

  • f_yeah_marie

IN!  Her makeup looks really good, as well.

  • It is interesting to look at.  That, however, is not a compliment.  OUT.

  • Cousin_Rose

In. I even like the bag. SXSW requires a bag big enough to carry her iPad Mini.

  • PeaceBang

Ridiculous bell hop uniform, and she’s making off with some guy’s dop kit. OUT to the O-U-T.

  • I don’t like that shade of green w/ the tweed.  IF I was going to accept tweed shorts, I would prefer the jacket be trimmed in black or some other colour.  She does look different, I’ll give her that.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I’m not having it. OUT from stringy top to pointy, inappropriate toes.

  • Ediths_Head

Love! Very much IN, good for her for knowing she’s young and can kill tweed short shorts. I myself must have missed that window?

  • In. I love it, and I love her and that green on the trim is my very favorite shade of green.

  • Love it!

    Totally perfect for SXSW.

  • anonylind

Could she have brushed her hair maybe?

  • oohsparkley!

    In. Cute!

  • bringbackbeatles

IN! Very cute and unexpected, and definitely has an attitude I like. Jacket is fierce!

  • demidaemon

Hmmm..not loving the ankle strap on the heels. That really throws me off, as well as the angle of the photograph, which makes it hard to judge the outfit. Still, I love me some Kendrick, this is a pretty cool and put-together look, it’s the SW, and my quibbles are minor. IN!

  • girliecue

Sorry, but any fun tweed short shorts might inherently possess is negated by the cut and piping of the jacket, which screams old lady Chanel suit. I could see it as a fun outfit if it were in a different color than This Here’s A Serious Outfit Gray. Either this outfit can’t decide which persona it wants to be or some major missteps were made by the designer. Unless she actually IS marketing a short-short suit to the elderly socialite set. Ooh, I can’t even think about that! Out, Anna Kendrick.

  • Cute! And you need to add another point for braving tweed in Austin in March!

  • guest2visits

The shorts are blah to me. It would have looked better with a pencil skirt.
The shoes look great on her but the jacket feels like it’s missing that blouse.

  • libraangel

I so want to give an IN, but I can’t. Jacket is indeed lovely, but sorry, it’s not the shorts themselves: it is the tightness and too short and almost showing the pee-pee. Still, I wish it was a mini-skirt instead of shorts, so OUT

  • MaryAtRealityTea

  • Terrible_Person

    IN, this is great fun.

  • pdquick

Chanel meets Dukes of Hazzard. Carrying a Filofax. OUT

  • IN!

  • I did jump backwards a little when I saw HOW short the shorts were, but overall, it’s a cool look.

  • calimon

In! I love this outfit. Totally fresh! I want!

  • Frank Lithium

I don’t see anything wrong with it, IN.

  • kathrineb

I saw the jacket and I thought CUTE…then I saw the matching shorts and it became HORRIBLE.

  • fursa_saida

I think I’m wishing for a different shoe, but I don’t know what kind of shoe I’m wishing for.

Grading on her curve, definitely IN, though.

  • Haley Buchanan

IN – This is exactly what a cool girl at SXSW should wear!

  • Kathleen Ayres

    A very sassy IN!

  • pop_top

In. I would totally wear this if I had the body for it.

  • berkeleygirl

Total in… It could have gone so wrong, but it’s impeccably tailored, and her doll-size physique can pull it off without looking trashy.  This would have been totally different on, say, Heidi Klum.  Kendrick has a notable track record in wearing modern, tailored pieces that neither overwhelm her nor infantilize her.  When your 5′, tops, and probably 95 lbs. soaking wet, it’s not easy to pull off.

  • IN.  love the green trim.  i wouldn’t say the bag clashes, but it does look like an appointment book.  needs a little color on her lips.

  • mhlmh

  • Carly Warnock

I’m a little late to the game here but I say out.

  • lrober03

Wrong shoes. I would prefer a nice loafer or oxford or flat I think
