so fucking fierce… i can’t with her! love that coat!

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I feel like she should be wearing boots and singing Stand and Deliver. This isn’t working for me, even if she is Queen of Fuckingfantastica.

    • http://www.facebook.com/mahoho Mary Alexander

I did not expect the terms “Helen Mirren” and “Gothic Lolita” to ever associate with each other, but today is a new day.

      • tmchale

Also a bit of funeral mourner in there.

      • http://twitter.com/carelessriver Caterina Maria

Saw it the moment I clicked. Cannot now unsee. ARGH.

    • http://twitter.com/watchinginkdry Krysta

SO CLOSE. Earrings and scarf are too much on top, but that’s a pretty great coat (although I wish the capey thing were an inch shorter). Looks like it might be a great dress underneath too, I wish we got to see it. . .

    • savicevic

I think Lucy Liu did it better, but Dame Helen certainly rocks it too!

    • Rachael

very meh….she really needs to find an option that is not opaque black tights, and for the love of G-d she should never wear them with open-toed shoes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

        It’s her thing. But why?!?!!?!

        • capybara_cafe

She may have varicose veins that are visible through a more sheer hose. My gran developed them in her 60’s and wore pants after that because she was so embarrassed.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Which I understand, my grandmother wears hose as well, it’s the combination of the hose+open toed shoes I don’t get.

            • capybara_cafe

Agreed. Actually, I don’t think opaque tights ever look good with heels, but it seems to be a thing in my area.

    • Alyssa

I want to see the dress underneath…what little I can see intrigues me!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I love that coat. I want to see the dress. I will never sign off on her hose with peep toes.

    • librarygrrl64

That coat is all kinds of fabulous, but a brightly colored glove would have made it sing. The below-the-knee action is pretty much expected at this point, but if one is in cold and rainy England, one cannot be blamed for wanting tights instead of hose or bare legs. Would love to see her in pants, though.

      • sweetestsith

I think I would love it with colored gloves & fancy boots. I like it as is, but the shoes really bug.

        • Louise Bryan

Ooo, that would have been delicious. There are so many gorgeous boots around these days. And a relief to all the black would have been an excellent idea. Of course, she looks pretty fantastic anyway.

      • capybara_cafe

I love that there’s a teeny bit of color showing at the bottom, with the dress, but you’re right, a colored glove would be excellent. I love this coat, it’s amazing.

    • Nicholas

She looks like a Hogwarts professor.

Not that it’s necessarily a bad thing.

      • Libby Larson

        I was thinking “Mary Poppins.”

        • Nicholas

Someone needs to make that movie happen.

    • Christine Marie

On her way for a trot around the forest on her horse Wellington, obviously. Just forgot her riding boots at home.

    • tmchale

What’s with the dress sticking out from the bottom?

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Um. It’s a bit much. There’s a lot of frippery going on here.

    • Imasewsure

      Too dark but still fabulous.

    • EEKstl

I actually love this but wish she’d gone with a simple black turtleneck instead of the scarf. The scarf and the earrings are too much together.

    • schadenfreudelicious

i love her, but the head to toe Italian widow’s collection is a bit much….

      • VicD

I thought this was the “Return of Mary Poppins” collection.

      • drdarke

        “What’s ‘wet work’?”
        “I kill people, dear…?”

If Dame Helen ever headed my way dressed like that, I’d run like Hell before she got close enough to crush my windpipe with the edge of her purse….

    • SugarSnap108

Oooo, not quite. I love this on the model, but with the long leather gloves and opaque tights, it’s all too heavy on Ms. Helen. She looks like a cute and sassy Darth Vader.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

The scarf kills the beauty of that coat.

    • Sara__B

She looks warm and comfy and sort of frumpy.

    • Catiline

I love the silhouette, but the earrings brought it to a screeching halt for me. So close.

      • Adriana_Paula

Yep; this outfit did not call for chandelier earrings at all.

    • jw_ny

Those earrings are surely still gonna be too much/awful even after she takes off the coat and scarf….hopefully the gloves come off too, but they’re ok when worn outdoors with the coat.

    • Indigo54

Whew! Just looking at her carrying all that heavy stuff around wears me out. Sophisticated widow’s weeds is what I call it.

    • Zippypie

The coat is fabulous. Would have loved to see some color on the gloves or the bag and sheer black stockings instead of the heavy opaque. The earrings must go with the dress that peeking out and they certainly do her no favors with the coat and scarf look.

    • MilaXX

Love the coat, but wish she had kept the belt.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I wish she’d ditched/changed the scarf, and a different (maybe shorter) glove would have been better, but Queen Helen is rocking that coat.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=14301272 Kate Gorton

Is that a D&G dress underneath? I loved those big print ones from a few seasons back. WERQ, either way.

    • alyce1213

It’s a bit HBC, a tad youthful, but Helen’s a fun gal, so ok — just ok.

    • http://twitter.com/skitzfiggitous skitzfiggitous

This picture showed up in my Facebook feed right after one of Justice Roberts in full SCOTUS regalia. They looked like they were going to the same event.

    • jetpackdino

I could criticize this look but… This is Helen Mirren we’re talking about. I can’t do it, it feels like blasphemy. She’s amazing.

    • PastryGoddess

cute coat, but I want to see the dress underneath

    • Qitkat

I’m sorry dear, your outfit makes you look like Mary Poppins.

    • FrayedMachine

Very Grandma Lolita. Take that as you will.

    • kirkyo

She could be going to a funeral. Or, maybe she occasioned the funeral in the first place. Either way, I like it.

    • Rrroza

Love this and her, but boots would be so much better. Or a hose with some texture…but no to the open-toed shoes!

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Shorter gloves, lose the lace thingy around the neck, and open the coat so we can see the dress! I adore her earrings. The coat seems like one of the only pieces from that benighted D&G collection that might be wearable off the runway.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I’m beginning to feel we need a D&G intervention with our Queen Helen.

    • Judy_S

Is she sponsored by D&G? Some of her getups from them have been less appropriate than this one, at least. I think I see a green floral dress of theirs peeking out under the coat. She claims in the video interview that she considered dying her hair green to match the dress… That said, I like the coat and the all-black does have the advantage of making us look at her face.

    • Pants_are_a_must

Okay, this is full on widow. Full on FABULOUS widow, but she really isn’t going to her sugar husband’s funeral, so ack.

    • ankali

Dammit, I thought she was done with this collection!

    • formerlyAnon

I dunno. I feel she’s embracing her inner wacky (or vibrant?) Grandma at a designer ensemble level. Not what we expect, but I kind of like it. And I’m pretty sure I’d hate whatever’s underneath that.

    • ccm800

the logo behind her looks like it belongs on a donut box

    • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

she looks fabulous. i like the belt on the model, tho, and a pop of colour might have done wonders.

    • http://twitter.com/thejackanory Charles

That is so severe and aging on a woman who has always been able to enjoy (and should enjoy) how beautiful she is.

    • Tatiana Luján

Love the coat, hate the pairing of the earings with the scarf, they’re too much together. Hate the shoes. This look called for boots.

    • Trisha26

Adorable coat, but maybe a little too junior for Helen. And if she was going to wear those gloves, I think boots might have been a better match.

    • e jerry powell

The tights are making me uncomfortable.

    • crash1212

Coat is fab. Earrings are too long for the neckline. I do wish she’d stop with the open toes/hose look…it ranks right up there with neck beards to my eye.

    • http://twitter.com/JoannaOC JoannaOC

This is the Helen Mirren equivalent of jeans and a t-shirt.

    • http://twitter.com/carnivaltenten Ten Ten

      LOVE LOVE LOVE.

    • PrunellaV

Want. That. Coat. But it needs high, black patent boots.

    • mightbewrong

It hurts my soul that I don’t have that coat, but she’s wearing it better than me anyway.

    • Contralto

once again, QHoF shuts it the hell down. Love her madly.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1266410766 Phyllis Craine

Nothing beats a killer Statement Coat. Nothing.

    • gracedarling

The neckline of the coat is so beautiful, it’s a pity about the earrings and scarf.

(Also, send the whole thing to Elle Fanning. It’s probably her look.)

    • Nonmercisansfacon

That coat is confusing me. Part Mary Poppins, part grieving italian nun, part stylish. The scarf she wore around her neck is not helping either. In any case, anytime Queen Helen Mirren get to receive an award and call Sam Mendes on his apparent lack of female inspirations, the world wins.

    • conniemd

Color somewhere please, to match that tiny bit in the fabulous earrings.

    • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

She looks fantastic from the neck up.

    • Damien W

This is one of those outfits that either she can rock, or Meryl Streep can rock. The mischievousness on top of the gravitas pretty much lets the two of them wear things that other women their age simply can’t. Gloves, tights…these are mere details to a true diva. IN.

    • http://www.facebook.com/NadiyaOsmani Pudgy Possum

She needs to take off some articles of clothing. Way to wrapped up, Helen is.

    • http://twitter.com/Eovaai Eovaai

      Love it. Coat is fabulous.

    • kathrineb

Adorable. Once again I love her.

    • SportifLateBoomer

I love Helen more than anything, but my first reaction to this coat was a flashback to the winter habits that the Sisters of Charity who taught at my grammar school wore (think Meryl Streep in Doubt — very triggering!).

Love the hair and makeup and even the earrings. I would totally do all that.

    • guest2visits

It could be an oppressive look but she carries it very well. It might be better with a less opaque hose.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

OK something has happened to her legs that she doesn’t want us to know about.
