Helen Mirren in Dolce&Gabbana

Posted on March 07, 2013

We salute Queen Helen’s sassiness and ongoing attempts to remain true to her age while still dressing with a little edge. But we can’t sign off on this one.

Helen Mirren attends ‘The Audience’ Press Night Curtain Call at The Gielgud Theatre in London in Dolce&Gabbana.

Dolce&Gabbana Lace Scoop Neck Three Quarter Sleeve Dress

Lady, no.

You can wear the lace dress OR the opaque tights with the cute booties. You really can’t put them together, dear. No one can.

She clearly prefers to keep her legs covered – and we totally support that if that’s what she wants – but why does she insist on wearing these dresses, then? Go for the chic ladypant, Hel. You’ve got the bod to rock them and you apparently feel the need to cover down there, so why not go for it? Those booties would look awesome with a pair of black skinnies.

I can’t get past the “playing dress-up with my mommy’s pearls” necklace

    •  Aww. i was just going to say how much i love the pearls. The extreme length pushed boring back into edgy territory.

      • 3boysful

I love pearls but the knot right in front of the good china is off-putting to me.

      • Violina23

Hahaha, I figured if TLo didn’t even bring it up, I was probably going to be in a minority on that, but I have NEVER liked oversized/messy-looking Jewlery.  But it IS Queen Helen, so I suppose I should be groveling in a corner begging forgiveness or something 🙂

    • Mexxoo

I can’t get past the knot on the pearls falling right at her hoo-hah…

    • makeityourself

I am a pearl girl myself, but this is awful. Nobody, but nobody knots a rope of pearls below the crotch.

(For some reason I just remembered that episode of SATC when the girls were in Atlantic City and Samantha was running up the back stairs of the hotel wearing a thong made out of pearls. I guess that’s the last time my brain thought “pearls” and “crotch” Simultaneously. Funny how that happens,)

  • Annabelle Archer

When Helen has an off day, we all have an off day.

    • AthenaJ

This is true, I thought I felt a disturbance in the force…

  • Sobaika

The only change I would have made is the boots, she needs different ones altogether. Maybe a higher hem on the dress.

She’s still Queen Helen though and I’m still bowing.

  • The dress is beautiful, but those accessories kill it! A simple necklace, nude tights with a killer pair of heels would have totally transformed this look.

    • Lilak

Indeed.  The dress is the best part of this get-up, no question — in spite of the effort it takes to fight through the incongruous accessories and actually see the dress.

Normally, you’d think mother-of-the-bride (which it would be on almost anyone else, and if you have a knee-jerk reaction to this style, like our friendsTLo), but Helen’s managed to sex it up some — quite fetching.

    • MoHub

“Nude tights” is the key phrase here. I can understand her possibly wanting to cover up varicose or spider veins, but the black just makes her look like a Sicilian widow.

I have some beautiful opaque nude tights, and most people don’t know they’re not regular pantyhose. And I’m sure she can afford better ones than I have.

  • filmcricket

Those tights are terrible. Even Zooey Deschanel is going “Girl, no” at those. The dress is quite lovely – if you must do grey, that’s the shade to do – and those booties belong in my closet, which is not something I ever thought I’d say about booties. But they do not go together. She also looks as though her best foundation garments may have been in the wash on this day.

Love the earrings. Wish she’d kept the pink hair a bit longer.

  • You guys are spot on.  Its two different looks that clash mightily.  And I really am not on board with the dress at all. Mostly I love those shoes.  The rest can go away.

    • Does she have a professional relationship with D&G?  Because she’s been wearing their widow’s weeds—sorry, I mean black lace—creations a lot for quite some time.  None of them have looked particularly flattering to my eyes, and this is no exception.

I’d love to see those shoes hooked over the rungs of a stool in a little apres-ski setting in Aspen or Gstaad…..skinny pants, oversize sweater, fantastic scarf, with her cheeks sporting the ruddy glow achieved by mixing cold weather and hot toddies.

      • Well, clearly she loves that last collection or two from D&G.  But I agree it isn’t always the best of choices for her.  I’m thinking that tailored chic is a better direction for her than this kind of thing.

And I love your imaginings about her apres’-ski.

      • Qitkat

Liked for the delightful image of the apres-ski. I’m near Aspen, and although I don’t ski, perhaps I need to rethink my leisure time.

    • WhoAreYouWearing

I agree with you, as usual.  Love the shoes!  WANT!  Not a fan of the dress, for some reason.

  • anneland

Like it. I think it comes together in a cool and unexpected way.

    •  I agree.  I think the booties and pearls are playful, while the dress says, “Step off, bitches.”

    • Dot

Yes. If anyone can pull this look off, it’s her.

  • pattyw

Bummer about the tights and booties, because I think that’s the best I’ve ever seen her hair and the dress fits like a dream.

  • Oh, so sad. From the knees up she’s a goddess. From the knees down, the Wicked Witch of the West.

  • MarissaLG

Totally agree on the outfit, but her hair looks AMAZ

    • littlemac8

Really?  I thought her grey/white hair combined with whatever leftover colors are going on there was aging.

  • Top half is great.  Bottom half could be great (those are killer booties).  Such a wasted opportunity!

  • Tatiana Luján

Dress that hits below the knee + booties that cover the ankles = stumpy.

  • MelVT

Yeah, well, we all make mistakes.  But she is so effing gorgeous.

  • BrooklynBomber

I can’t keep it inside anymore. I know everyone adores her, but I can’t bear the way she dresses most of the time. She doesn’t have a clue. She should just dress like a character in a Barbara Pym novel and be done with it.

    • SugarSnap108

I think she’s usually divine, but I applaud those who are unafraid to utter an unpopular opinion.  Someday someone will feel free to say they hate Tina Fey (not me, I love her!).

    • formerlyAnon

“She should just dress like a character in a Barbara Pym novel and be done with it.”

Ah, but that gives her a bit too much scope, don’t you think? I’m dying to know what you’re envisioning! Lady anthropologist, semi-clueless wife, single female of uncertain age and prospects (rural or urban?), and I’m sure I’ve left out a few.

      • BrooklynBomber

All will do–after all, she could play any of them–but how about competitive matron who does the flowers at the church and disapproves of the vicar?

        Love you, formerlyAnon!

  • teensmom99

I used to like lace but I am so done with it.  I was at a bar mitzvah this past weekend with lots of day time lace with illusion netting that just looked . . . unattractive.  Do love the booties with some different outfit.  And Queen Helen looks better in this outfit than any one else could!

    • cowper

Bar mitzvah + daytime lace! I can just imagine constantly trying not to wince.

  • mhleta

I see why she was seduced by this dress. Her body looks great in it. From the knees up, it’s a home run, (though the hair really could be better.) She could have done far far better with a sheerer but still black stocking and kitten heels.

  • God I just love her to death. That dress was made for her. If only she’d worn it with simple black (closed toe) pumps.

  • Bill Curtis

But she also looks to me like she knows she missed on this outfit, said to herself, “Oops!  Not a great one,” and then turned to Taylor and said, “Oh well, come on, honey, let’s go.  We’ll be late.”

  • Nude bra!  Nude bra!

    • kimmeister

Yes!  Her totally visible bra is irksome.

  • aeb1986

Why does she always wear D&G? The collection she always wears from is too lacey and not flattering.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

Well I think she looks great and hope she keeps playing “dress-up” for a long time!

  • MilaXX

I don’t even mind the tights, but the too long necklaces and the booties ruin the look. I also agree those booties would look great with a skinny pant.

  • conniemd

The dress does look amazing on her body, fits it like a glove. I can see why she was seduced and it’s grey enough not to be widow’s weeds. As to the tights, perhaps she has a vericose vein problem? If so, then yeah, go full length or sexy pants but the opaque heavy tights do buzzkill the effect of the dress.

  • Cathy S

I liked the pearls when she held them to the side, but hanging straight down? The knot is right over her ladybits, plus it drags the whole thing down. When there off to the side though, I really like the whole outfit.

  • BeeBeauNYC

GOD I WORSHIP HER!!! The dress is amazeballs all the way – just drop the black tights and a different pair of shoes and she’d have a total werq.  Honestly I hope I look half as good when I’m her age.

  • I think she could go with a slightly more sheer stocking, but I still think she’s rockin’ it. Those booties are the bomb!!

    • AViewer44

I agree. I think she looks fantastic. Her body is pretty amazing for any age and this shows it off clearly but subtly. I think she’s aiming for a funky look that isn’t getting picked up by the eyeballs on this site. The only thing I’d rethink is the hair which looks a bit mangy.

  • bertkeeter

Ms Kitty on GUNSMOKE called, she wants her dance hall shoes back! YIKES!

Such a disappointment so early in the day……

  • SoThenISaid

I just love her face so much. The outfit is kind of a miss, but who cares? A real face trumps any fashion mistake in my book.

  • Girl_With_a_Pearl

You know, on anyone else I would think this was a disaster, but Miss Helen looks kinda fierce.

    • AViewer44

      Me too

  • YolandaHawkins

This was not Dame Helen’s finest fashion hour.  But she usually hits more than she misses.  Sadly this was a miss.

  • I just don’t think having the knot in the pearls right THERE is a good idea.

  • Love the dress, love the hair, love the makeup, love the pearls.  Would have been a great look with nude or sheer black hose and better shoes, but as is, it’s giving her cankles.

  • trisker

Her face, though — she is SO beautiful, and it doesn’t look like she’s done overmuch surgery-wise.

  • StellaZafella

This smacks of: “The Queen Mum steps out for a late night at the discos…Carnaby Street will never be the same!”

  • Kristy Evans

As the Fug Girls call it, this is a “scroll-down fug.” Nice hair, great rack, beautiful dress, WHAT.

  • she looks fine to me, save for that  piece of white/beige bra showing up from underneath… Dark grey/black or strapless would have been a better choice. That and the stockings being too opaque.

  • Sheer dark gray stockings, as opposed to tights, might have worked better with the ensemble, because I really love the booties with the dress.

  • SewingSiren

I think the Dolce and Gabbana suits her very well.  The style and color of the dress are perfect for her figure and hair color. I would have used a different style necklace with this silhouette. And the tights and boots I don’t hate. But she could do better.

  • Qitkat

Queen Helen maybe just missed the mark here; sheer black hose would have been a better choice. Those are awesome booties. I hope she bought them so we see them with other outfits (such as suggested by @NurseEllen:disqus). She looks her usual confident self with an edge. Her attitude towards her age has always seemed to be: This is me, take it or leave it, I’m comfortable in my own skin
Hells bells, might as well rock the attitude, can’t do anything about getting older.

  • The too long pearls really throw off proporton as well

  • Love the dress, the accessories ruined the look.  How about some killer, higher boots and better jewelry?

  • GorgeousThings

I love it (including the pearls) until we reach the tights. Then she lost me.

  • kimmeister

I’m glad her hair’s not pink anymore, but she also seems to need some help in the eyebrow department.

  • margaret meyers

Skirt shortened to above the knee, with sheer stockings? I think she was going for something 1890’s Chorus Girl — maybe she needs those volumonous, formed, panier skirts we’ve been seeing in the shows.

  • Dot

Not loving the boots with the dress (though they are fierce as hell on their own), but hot damn, she is so gorgeous.

  • Monday1900

What TLo said–but I would add that pearl necklace has to go.  And I miss her pink hair!

  • MarTeaNi

I make no judgement on the tights.  I think she looks lovely but I think a few alterations would make her look spectacular.

But Helen.  That is the wrong bra for that dress.  You are a movie star, and a damn good one!  You should have no trouble finding the right style in the right color.  And then maybe you won’t have to push the straps all the way out to the edges of your shoulders so we don’t see the top of the cups or the bright clashing “nude” color.

  • Deb Oswald

Oh her hair!!!  That is the killer for me! Looks a little like the undone hair of older ladies in the nursing home.  NOT to diss anyone, but you know what I mean!  I wonder if this looked better in person…..

  • Indigo54

Stupid tights.   Ruined the whole look! Must be some kinda modesty thing.   Still got love for her tho.

  • Le sigh. I don’t love the dress because the lace actually looks a little cheap to me, but I could have gotten on board if she were wearing sheer hose and pumps, instead of opaque tights and booties.

  • SugarSnap108

This is unfortunate.  She could’ve rocked the hale out of that dress if not for the tights and booties and 9-foot string of pearls.  Also, is that her BRA we are seeing?

I do think those boots are adorable, though.

  • SRQkitten

Black tights? Geez, Dame Helen you are not Zooey D, a fact for which multitudes of bitter kittens give thanks.

  • MopsTheBunny

Dress is fantastic, boots are fantastic, just not together. Having said that, she is Helen Mirren, she is amazing and I AM GOING TO SEE THE AUDIENCE IN APRIL.

  • Scroll. Down. Fug.

  • So close!

  • I’m OK with all but the necklace. I don’t generally see her as kooky, but aren’t British people allowed to bust that out whenever they feel like it?

  • Oh, dear.  I think your fairy blogsisters would call that a scrolldown fug.

  • peachy

*gasp* at the gorg dress. *weep* for the tights and boots. good lord.

  • travelingcat

I agree about Dame Helen rocking some lady pants. I remember seeing an interview with her though where she stated she only wore skirts or dresses in public because she believes she has “an enormous bum”. So not true!!! A good reminder to not get too stuck in a belief or pattern over time.

  • rainwood1

I once saw an interview where Dame Helen says she doesn’t like to wear pants because she doesn’t like the shape of her bottom.  That may be why she sticks with dresses then does the tights.  We all have body image issues, including the fabulous Helen.

  • libraangel

I didn’t know Margaret Thatcher joined a punk band?

  • formerlyAnon

But you gotta love how she poses insouciantly with pearls in hand.

IF I were going to wear something lacy, it’d be those ankle boot/shoes.

  • Louise Bryan

This combination makes her legs look incongruously short.  She looks great, though, from the hem up.

  • warnerave

looks really great from the knee up…

  • Anniebet

Damn, my overwhelming adulation just went down half a notch. She is now merely a supreme high goddess. Hope this is just a quirk, ’cause another look like this will cause a plummet, I’m afraid.

  • kathrineb

Not her best, especially she shoes and dress, but she always looks like shes having so much fun. Love her.

  • tallgirl1204

I dunno, I like it. In a Daphne Guinness kind of way.

  • I think just taking off the crotch/boob pearls would greatly improve this.

  • UptownNippy

Well, I am going to say nay to the hair.  She is not that old to have that grey updo that makes her look ancient.
The gray hair and the gray dress and the droopy pearls, not to mention the tights and boots, just make me sad.

She looked so pretty with her sassy short ‘do.

    • libraangel

Actually, when she was a young actress (AGH! I actually remember), she had quite a bohemian style

  • kikisayshi

Aww man, if the dress was long it would be stunning. It was like scroll-down-honey-no! She is pretty fabulous nonetheless.

  • Super_Red

the shoes! the shoes! They hurt my eyes! BURN THEM IN FIRE!

From the knees up she is amazing as always, though. LOVE her.
