Girl, That’s Not Your Dress: Tina Fey in Rachel Roy

Posted on March 05, 2013

Alas, we spoke too soon. There is still work to be done and lessons to be taught to Miss Tina.

Tina Fey makes an appearance on the ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’ show in a Rachel Roy blue dress paired with Christian Louboutin pumps and Jamie Wolf earrings.

Jamie Wolf Diamond Open Marquis Earrings

We’ll say this: At least she’s still putting the effort in. Part of our issue with her earlier attempts on the red carpet and in the public eye is that they left the distinct impression that she didn’t believe she could be seen as pretty. That is to say, she had so little confidence in her own looks (and to be fair, preferred to focus on the her career) that she either self-sabotaged or just didn’t put the effort in. This dress is wrong for her because the silhouette is awkward and the rather wide V in the bustline is unflattering. Even though the dress seems to fit her correctly, it gives the impression that it’s too big on her.

Tina, pack this up and ship it off to a curvy, busty gal to rock. Let’s get you in something a little sleeker, shall we?

Yay Tina! But yeah, this is not her dress.

  • Annabelle Archer

If they were still taping 30 Rock I would assume this was a scene where Liz Lemon gets to go on Jimmy Fallon’s show.

    • aeb1986

I was thinking the same! Total Liz Lemon outfit. It looks “better” when shes sitting down but still…

In the stand up photos I’m getting flashbacks to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when the girl turns into a blueberry. Still love you Tina!

  • Hell Yes, I Would!

Poor dear. It does appear to be 2  sizes too big. But I do love that  color.

  • imperfectlaura

I’m not sure there is a person out there who would look good in that dress on a talk show.   The bust line looks hella awkward sitting down.

    • kschwarting

I think it’s creeping upward when she sits.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1576973112 Patricia Groves Dobrowski

My thoughts exactly – like she didn’t test what this would look like while seated.  Standing up, it’s okay, but not great, but when she sits, that whole awkward V at the neckline just bursts wide open & makes her breast look like they’re not on speaking terms at the moment.

    • 3boysful

And since you’re seeing a lot of bare leg and upper torso/arms, it truly does look like she came out in a bath towel.

  • Jessi03

The bitter kittens might jump on me for this one, but this could possibly be Lena Dunham’s dress.

    • alyce1213

You’re probably right, but aren’t we trying to get Lena away from strapless?

      • Janet B

        I am!

      • http://twitter.com/DarthJaeda Jaeda Laurez

No, I thought we were just trying to get her away from TV.

        • alyce1213

          That too.

        • Kayceed

          Oh snap!

      • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I’m trying to get everyone away from strapless.

    • schadenfreudelicious

i actually thought “oh Lena is gonna try that dress”…and i am afraid it’s not going to be her dress either…

  • Jill

The flat, lifeless hair isn’t doing her any favors either.

    • http://profiles.google.com/anplica Anplica Fiore

A bit of makeup would help too

  • xmixiex

I feel that all Rachel Roy is constructed for voluptuous, amazon women.  When my petite self looks at her garments I usually think, “that’s super cool, but it would swallow me whole.”

  • Le_Sigh

I’ve been marathoning 30 Rock episodes for the past week and a half – and dang if that Liz Lemon has one rockin’ bod.

That being said – this dress just does not work – and when she’s sitting on the couch, she almost blends into it.  The color looks great on her, but its a bad sitting down and chattin’ on the teevee dress.  Its almost shapeless.

  • Sobaika

A teensy speedbump. She still looks loads better than she used to.

  • VanessaDK

I think it is refreshing to see a bustline that is not filled in with great galumphing globes.

  • jetpackdino

She seems really naked in this dress.

  • jilly_d

I don’t think that’s anyone’s dress; the neckline is fug.  And would you REALLY want to see it on a Katy Perry or Christina Hendricks??  That wide neckline on a busty gal would go vulgar in a heartbeat.  I say burn that dress and start over.  Keep the earrings though Tina, they’re fab.

    • BrooklynBomber

      agree.

    • xmixiex

      earrings are gorgeous.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I actually like this on her, but only in the photo where she’s standing. This isn’t a sit-down-for-an-interview-dress. And the color is great. And I think she could have been more creative with the shoes.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZBFH32YG44LIIZYLSQPMBXMYCU Sarah

I think maybe it was selected specifically FOR a sit-down interview. The weird neither-here-nor-there fullness in the skirt was probably viewed as a way to keep upper thigh bits from showing when she sat down. That said, I think if it had a different bustline and a more tailored skirt, it would be a hit.

  • http://www.facebook.com/CameronETurner Cameron Turner

I like it but she must do something with that hair!

  • LearnedFoot

    Color: yes!
    Length: yes!
    Smile: yes!
    Everything else: oh dear.

  • lobsterlen

Strapless dress for a late night talk show filmed in NYC in March? It does not fit right and she looks so uncomfortable. Females stars do this all the time, and I never get it, but they never seem to consider they will  be sitting in a slumpy chair on national TV. T Lo and the minions may disagree but she would have been better off wearing nice jeans and sweater.

    • Kayceed

I am absolutely hankering for someone to show up in a ferociously tailored suit. So bored with cocktail dresses…

  • alyce1213

Bad choice. The color is good for her hair and complexion, but it’s abysmal against the conflicting blues on Jimmy Fallon’s set.
    Her people weren’t paying attention.

  • http://twitter.com/lisledanielle Danielle Lisle

Giving her some grace for rocking some Loubies.

  • Janet B

Not her dress, plus she isn’t styled for wearing it.

    • megohd

word word word. wish she was wearing a hot jacket and some sharp pants with cool shoes. Why would Tina Fey go strapless (overly formal, IMO) on Jimmy Fallon’s show?

No doubt she is gorgeous and can rock formal-wear, but it doesn’t seem necessary in this venue.

      • aykhan

I think you’re right – a tailored pants look would have been much better.

  • BrooklynBomber

Looks like the dress needs its own chair.

  • Beardslee

Cold weather is a great time to wear a fabulous jacket but, alas, they are left hanging forlorn and and unloved.  I wish the strapless dress would make a noise like a hoop and roll away.  So boring, so expected, so unseasonal.

  • charlotte

She seemed so uncomfortable in this dress. It was a constant tugging and pulling when she was on the show.

  • OrigamiRose

Good god, she’s drowning in that thing.

  • sweetlilvoice

Ugh….where is her jewelry? This dress demands a necklace.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Right? I thought it was the V neck, but it’s really because there is no necklace. I don’t think it would have saved it, but it surely would have helped.

  • Tamara Hogan

I miss Tina Fey’s Tina Fey glasses.

    • charlotte

I always saw them as Tina Fey’s Liz Lemon glasses, and I miss Miss Lemon.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Defintely needs some ‘zhuzzhing’ in the hair and make up department.  She doesn’t look very confident in it, either. Can’t say I blame her.

    • amf0001

I have no doubt that she did her own hair and makeup,  or used green room gal,  but she didn’t use a professional.  I can do that hair and make up!

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Yes, it’s good to see Ms. Fey still making an effort, but this dress is not working for her figure. That neckline doesn’t flatter.

  • Alyssa

So, not really a fan of that dress, but I would kill for those earrings!

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

    She looks cold!

  • tallgirl1204

Props where we can, though:  it is a good color on her, and the length is good, both on her and for a “sit-down.”

  • http://twitter.com/DarthJaeda Jaeda Laurez

“Tina, pack this up and ship it off to a curvy, busty gal to rock. ”
The horrible thing is, she IS curvy and busty for being so tiny, but this dress makes her look the exact opposite.

    • ankali

I have a hard time believing that if an actually busty girl wore this, people wouldn’t be calling it “vulgar” almost immediately.

ETA: And having scrolled down a bit more, I rest my case.

  • sarahmichelef

You have infiltrated my brain to the point that I spent the entire interview trying to figure out why this dress didn’t work for her.

That said… you can’t go wrong with a Tina/Jimmy Weekend Update flashback. They still have the same bantery chemistry they did then.

  • lrhoff

    Completely agree!!

  • NC_Meg

It doesn’t fit her. At all. You’re Tina Fey. SOMEONE will tailor that dress for you!

  • PeggyOC

    Color is nice, though…

  • Wendi126

Those are the most boring Christian Louboutin pumps. They make me sad.

    • Flame Princess

I feel like the nude color is super-unflattering to her feet. It’s…making them look spider-veiny when she sits down.

  • withbreaththatisbaited

I was hoping this one would slip past you guys because yeah, it’s not good. The shape of that skirt is weird and it definitely looks too big. I think it would have been significantly better if the neckline peaks (?? boob cups??) weren’t so big. Happily, she’s looked much, much better for her other appearances lately.

  • fungstyle

I think Miss Tina may not be entirely used to her new body (even though she’s had it for years now).

  • MilaXX

Yeah not liking this  and even though I know it was secured, as she was talking I was a little worried about a wardrobe malfunction.

  • Indigo54

That’s ok Tina.  I still wuv you!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/47S737MGWCAZEZ73QOAFKDFEKQ Jill

Her face and hair look great, shame about the dress….

  • decormaven

The bodice design is like an Expand-O-Matic, moving each breast to its own side to make a wider visual field. This is not an attractive look. Paired with the hiddy putty pumps and unstyled hair, it just makes me say, “Another time, Tina.” Can’t get excited about sparkly earrings when they are hidden under unstyled hair.

  • JaneDC

That v neckline looks like it needs to be zipped up or something.

  • Imasewsure

Would have been fine without the giant scoop neckline…

  • kikisayshi

Ugh, those shoes! She appears to have duck feet in the 2nd photo.

  • kimmeister

I think the shape of the skirt bothers me more than the wonky bustline.  In that shot where she’s walking, the slight tulip shape is making her look knock kneed.

  • Zippypie

She’s bound to have a misstep here and there.  This is unflattering but at least it’s not flashing hooha with a slit up to the navel.  Just a strangely shaped dress and horrible beige pumps.  Hair and makeup look fab though.

  • margaret meyers

It looks like just an innocent dress, but put it on and it is a figure KILLER.

  • Kyle Crawford

    That is not anyone’s dress….

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

Also, the tulip skirt needs to die a swift, ignominious death.

    Looks good on NO ONE.

  • Adriana_Paula

I want to like it…maybe a belt would have helped?  A belt would at least make the dress seem less prone to slip right off to the floor.

  • http://twitter.com/bkiersten BridgetK

I consider this only a minor foul.  I love her so much that I am more forgiving.  Also, I think the color is lovely on her.

  • marilyn

Also:  Her hair is messy, she needs a (faux) tan, and those shoes are horrific.

  • j_anson

I actually like the dress a lot when she’s standing up. It just goes odd when she sits down. The wrong dress for this event.

  • E. D.

I don’t mind the skirt or shoes, but that V is not doing her (or anyone) any favors.

  • libraangel

It ain’t that bad, but I hate the color of the shoes

  • warnerave

    it isn’t that bad…

  • lrober03

Glad she’s sticking to jewel tones though.  They always suit her

  • http://twitter.com/amndad amanda lynn

oh good it’s not just me – i actually watched this and wasn’t a big fan of the outfit.  or the new hair color.  it’s not sitting right with me.

  • Judy_J

Nothing about this dress is flattering. Bad choice all around.

  • Melanie_Bee

Love this color on her, but the way it fits on her (especially up top) does make it look too big. It looks like something she’s trying on in a dressing room but hasn’t zipped up/adjusted yet. The whole look seems like a good idea that was poorly executed.

  • AnnaleighBelle

That dress is just ugly. It turns the boobal area into angry cat ears.  Tina is beautiful, though.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josefina-Madariaga-Suárez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

That dress is so not her that it looks like she was forced to wear it. Other than that, it’s a cute dress on its own, even if it’s not a “sitting down” dress, and the hair and makeup look very-OHMYGODSHE’SWEARINGNUDESHOESWHENARETHEYGOINGTOLEARNTHATTHEYDON’TGOWITHEVERYTHINGUGHHHHHHHHHI’MSOMADATTINA’SSTYLISTRIGHTNOW.

  • leftcoastpickle

Dang, she’s been doing so well lately! Good thing she’s also a hilarious genius.

  • http://twitter.com/MarfMom Maya

she looks kinda like lena dunham in this…anyone else agree?

  • bertkeeter

For once she’s NOT funny but SAD!

  • yaby

    i like it.
    she looks great.

  • jetpackdino

The photos of this dress are very misleading.

I saw this interview on Hulu last night and the dress looks *very* different on camera.  For one thing, it’s much more green.  Significantly more green than the sofa she’s sitting on.  It looks much better overall.  I was pleasantly surprised.
