Girl, That’s Not Your Dress: Emma Stone in Lanvin

Posted on March 11, 2013

Emma honey, come on now. We know it’s just an animated movie, but you still need to put the effort in for the red carpet, dear.

Emma Stone attends the premiere of ‘The Croods’ in New York City in head-to-toe Lanvin.

But then, looking over these pictures, it’s clear that you did actually put some misguided form of effort in. After all, that’s a strapless Lanvin that you shoved a t-shirt under. That had to take some real thinking. And then there’s the incongrously large Lanvin necklace, to go with the Lanvin silly putty pumps. No, it’s clear that you put effort in, and that effort likely consisted of  nothing more than turning to someone and saying, “Lanvin. Just get me stuff from Lanvin – and a t-shirt.” And then apparently you followed that up with, “Make sure it’s something that TOTALLY ruins my shape!”

Sweetie, go home and take a power nap. When you’re refreshed, we’ll start over.

Kind of sad. But it looks better on Emma than the poor thing standing in front of the white screen.

    • Sad. All of it.

    • barbarienne

I wonder if the model photo is an artsy deconstruction of a photoshoot, or if it is in fact a snapshot someone took while waiting around for the real photoshoot to begin.

      • urbanamish

or  waiting to be admitted to a clinic for eating disorders

  • miagain

the time change must have gotten to her….

    • Introspective

hilarious. that time change damn sure got to me cause im dragging thru monday morning… so i would not be surprised if that lost hour fucked her up.

      • MilaXX

except this was before the time change.

  • Proportionally awful in every respect except perhaps for hem length.  And the combo of the embellished white top with the crazy huge statement necklace takes it into WTFlandia.  And finally, the way the bodice is draped around her looks ill-fitted, but that’s probably because it wasn’t intended to have a knit top under it.  Harumph.

    • decormaven

Harumph indeed! Major Hoople would approve.

    • StellaZafella

A girl in my elementary school class had to wear a tee shirt under her bathing suit at the pool…I don’t know why, it was a one piece not a bikini and she was 8 years old. For some reason I flashed back to that looking at this.

      • That is incomprehensibly odd.  I can’t really muster up any sort of reason for it.

      • Anathema_Device

        Guessing sun protection or modesty?

        • Spicytomato1

Probably. Although most kids would put the shirt on over the swimsuit, not under. Funny.

      • lovelyivy

That sounds like an outtake from a “things immigrant parents make you do” listicle. [Note: I say that as someone with immigrant parents- although mine are not of the variety that would have made me do this, I had plenty of friends who could have totally been that kid.]

  • i think whis should be a “girl, that’s not your BOW” ’cause i like the dress on her actually. And the black part of that top need to be fitted.

  • RzYoung

Oh dear, I usually refrain from commenting on how thin people look but that dress makes her look very thin indeed- then I scrolled down and nearly gasped at the model wearing it, she looks like you could feed her into a slot machine! Sorry TLo I know you don’t approve to this sort of comment, feel free to delete me, I won’t be offended xx

  • Patricia Gillett

Oh honey, no. Burn it all and have some ice cream.

  • Annabelle Archer

That is bad.  Like, a lot.  It doesn’t help that it was a fugly dress to start, but styled in such a way just takes it to new levels of hiddy.  The blush is off the rose for me where Ms. Stone is concerned.

  • The skirt is cute and gives her some shape but everything from the waist up and the knees down needs work.

  • Does she have gays? She certainly needs them! It might have been an OK dress on her but that t-shirt, necklace and shoes were all misguided. I like the heavier eye makeup on her though.

  • Mismarker

Is “T-shirt under strapless dress” a thing now?

    • MilaXX

The Style network has been trying to make it happen for a while now. It always looks a hot mess to me.

      •  Are we on our way back to 1995, when we wore tiny tees under our strappy sundresses with denim vests?

        • Anathema_Device

           With Doc Martens.

        • Annabelle Archer

It would make my business casual work dressing fantastically easy. So, I say bring it on back. I love a good maxi dress, but I can’t sport such bare shoulders at work.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I don’t see any point to wearing a T under a strapless dress. If you’re not comfortable wearing a strapless dress, don’t wear them, or find a kick-ass jacket to complement the dress.  Is that too difficult a concept for the Style Network?

    • 3boysful

       Let us hope not.

      • Mismarker

Right? I’m saying a silent prayer.

  • I actually don’t hate this. It’s a creative way to wear the dress, perhaps to a party or something. Not so good for the red carpet and pictures though.

    • 3boysful

Me either.  It’s kind of a cartoon-y dress to go with the animated movie.  But NO to the white tee because of the shoulder flower, the color blending into her skin, and what it’s doing to the fit of the bodice.  Hate the necklace and abhor the shoes.

Hmmmm… so I guess I liked the germ of the idea, and that’s all.

      • Ah, true. but aren’t germs something we try to avoid?

        • 3boysful

🙂  You’re on the west coast and still clearly have had more coffee than I!

    • Spicytomato1

I’m with you. Even for the red carpet. I’ve seen worse.

  • Little_Olive

    What large earrings?

Oh and yes, this is head to toe hideous.

  • I am horrified. Words escape me.

  • DTLAFamilies

Is it me or does she look not well?

  • “And then there’s the uncongrously large Lanvin earrings, to go with the Lanvin silly putty pumps.”A. you guys must be seeing something that I don’t… the earrings are minuscule, maybe referring to the necklace?orB. it’s some sort of irony that I am not grasping…

    • lobsterlen

It’s early and T-Lo was probably so traumatized by the look and they confused the words earrings and necklace.

  • decormaven

Wowza, that necklace reminds me of shamrocks gone rogue. It probably costs a fortune, and a crafter on Etsy probably could execute it better. There was no thought put into this look, other than a total Lanvin haulage.

  • Wendi126

What’s that shit on her right shoulder? Looks like a wad of tissues she can just lean into to wipe her nose hands free.

  • Sobaika

Is she trying some high-low ‘Sharon Stone wears Gap t shirt to the Oscars’ vibe? Because she is failing.

    • cowper

I bet that was the idea, only the result is more like “thrift store mannequin in the process of being changed.”

  • I love it!

  • VioletFem

Earrings? Did TLo mean necklace? Which is indeed totally out of proportion with this whole look.

She looks like a little girl playing dress up.

  • Um…….I sort of like the necklaces?  That’s about the most charitable comment I can come up with.

    • MikeW_Vegas

I”m with you.. I like the necklace.. and I do like the shoes in the black as pictured..  The rest of the look?  HIDDY-US!!!

  • teensmom99

I expect her to rip off the dress and roll down the pair of jeans that were under it.  Even in that case, the shoes were a bad choice.   Not because they are beige but because they are ugly.

  • Whatever possessed her to put a t-shirt under that dress!!!  And those shoes, ugh…

  • MilaXX

This look is from that same school of thought you see on the how to makeover shows on the Style network where they try and tell the average consumer that they can wear a sundress year round by adding a turtleneck underneath it. As evidenced here by Ms. Stone, you cannot. It looks silly. In Ms. Stone’s case it looks especially bad because the bow in the back gives the dress a sort of obi feel and smashes her boobs at the same time. Slapping on that craft project of a necklace is only making an already bad look worse. The too big silly putty pumps and the awful makeup are just the nails in the coffin.

    • BuffaloBarbara

I’ve seen those little Style moments during their commercials, and they always leave me scratching my head.  They were trying to do “day to evening,” and by the time you’d done all the accessories, you might as well have just brought another dress to work!

  • lobsterlen

The necklace is horrible I almost hate it more than the t-shirt. Then those damn nude shoes..

When will this nude shoe trend die? Is Emma Stone that short that she needs to wear those hideous colored shoes? I beginning to think this myth was started by the nude shoe dye company to sell more dye for fugly colored shoes.

Question for the bitter kittens: Do nude shoes really make your legs look longer? Because all I see is ugly creepy flesh colored shoes and doubt her legs would look shorter in a shoe with color.

  • Quenby Eisenacher

I feel like Rooney Mara could pull it off, with or without the shirt, actually.  But not until they burn those shoes. Lawd, I’m getting tired of the nude shoe trend. And platforms. And nude platforms.

  • The t-shirt thing could’ve worked without the flower and the necklace.

  • SugarSnap108

Should I be embarrassed to say I think I’d like this if it were just the dress and necklaces?  But without the bow in the back, and with different shoes.  OK, that’s a lot of changes … I do like the shape and length of the skirt, though.

    •  I agree. Take out the t-shirt and change the shoes, and we might have something here.

  • CPK1

    hot tranny mess

  • schadenfreudelicious

i have never been a fan of the “everything but the kitchen sink” style of jewelry, and to my eyes that necklace is a particularly egregious example….the dress/t-shirt combo just looks like a silly afterthought.

  • Judy_J

Did she get dressed in the dark and without a mirror?

  • Funkykatt

Plus that thing coming from the back looks like the extra materials challenge from PJ where most put their extra materials in purses.

    • l_c_ann

I thought it was a frugal homesewer who had 3/4 yards of four different fabrics (and an attitude).

  • Alyssa

The time change has caused my normal Monday case of the grumpiness to be at a whole new level. I love Emma, but I don’t like this look at all. And I think I may need a check-up because some part of me wants those necklaces. I would wear them both together and walk around like I own my office.

  • Super_Red

I hate the shoes with this, but really love the look otherwise. I could do without the necklace- and the look would be better for it- but it doesn’t bother me that much.

  • Has she lost weight for a role because she looks decidedly unhealthy.

  • The animated movie she is promoting is about a Flintstones-type family so maybe the clunky necklace and strapless dress are a nod at Betty Rubble realness.

  • barbarienne

I don’t think it looks so bad on her. The biggest problem for me is that giant bow in the back, which screws up the silhouette. I don’t think the shirt underneath was done well, but I like the idea of this dress having shoulders rather than being strapless.

  • I wish Emma had left out the t-shirt, and kept the black shoes; then it might have actually worked.

And I know we’re not supposed to call out women’s bodies, but that model is TOO. THIN. And this, coming from a skinny girl.

    • If you know you’re not supposed to call out women’s bodies, then DON’T DO SO. We already banned one person this morning. Please stop.

      • My apologies – I didn’t mean any harm. I let my own history and issues come out in my comment. And I’ve never done it before; I’ll be sure to not do it again.

  • Yeah, but what’s worse – have a look at the frighteningly thin model wearing this garment.

  • jw_ny

It’s not so much a “girl, that’s not your dress” thing as it is a “dress, those are not your accessories” thing.

  • I don’t know why, but I kind of like the tshirt shoved into the strapless dress. I feel like it lightens an otherwise heavy dress. But what I do not like is the bow on the back of the dress, which just looks like leftover fabric to me. So my problem is less the tshirt and more the actual dress she paired it with.

  • Louise Bryan

I kind of hate that dress, but, given that, I prefer it with the t-shirt.  I am so tired of strapless everything.

  • jmorino08

All of her mirrors must be broken…

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Um…maybe the poor dear isn’t feeling well?  She might have gotten dressed whilst under the influence of Thera Flu.

  • alyce1213

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    Was she Amish?

  • claudemtl777

To be fair,Lanvin didn’t put much effort on their model either…What a sad picture…

  • MoHub

The obi effect is not her friend.

  • CurbGirl

Oh dear, further proof that a label does not guarantee a good look.

Wait, maybe my grand daughter was her stylist…nope, still doesn’t change my reaction.

  • stubbornthoughts

I love her so much, but that dress isn’t doing her any favors. Her makeup, however, looks AMAZING.

  • kategs

I like it, actually a lot!  She looks fresh and playful and as a fan of huge jewels this adds a touch that helps keep it amusing.

  • bertkeeter

With out t-shirt and necklace would be great on her…WTF was she / stylist thinking?

  • CeeQ

I like this but the floral bit on her shoulder, the large necklace then the giant bow peeking out the side is making it all seem lopsided and confused.

  • I love Lanvin, but Emma has a lot of head-to-toe Lanvin looks that are just a big old mess.

  • Anathema_Device

Wow. This is terrible. Looks like she tried to “quirk it up” and failed miserably. The t-shirt underneath reminds me of the days when my mom would wreck my awesome Halloween costume by forcing me to wear a layer over or under it.

    • poggi

Yes! I remember having to wear a winter coat and hood over my Halloween costume many years and being rather pissed about the whole thing.

  • AnnaleighBelle

    Da fuque?

  • Deb Oswald

Someone get that model something to eat….

  • mmc2315

Oh.  I really, really dislike this entire outfit, but mostly the growth (bow?) on the back + a tshirt.

  • unbornfawn

This look is a hot mess, but I can’t get over how skinny and unhealthy that model looks.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

A T-shirt under this dress? Non, non, non!  Somewhere a stylist is weeping.

  • Why put the t-shirt on under it? it’s like she was in a dressing room and decided to “see how it would look” but she didn’t want to get undressed all the way.

  • guest2visits

Crazy dress, cheap looking necklace, invisible shoes.

  • rkdgal

Please add “Girl, That’s Not Your MOVIE.”  The previews for this don’t look good.  (Although it’s the most hair a Nic Cage character has had in a while…)

  • libraangel

Yikes! I didn’t even notice the T-shirt until I scrolled down to the second photo (honest). Is her skin that white and pale?! Anyway, WHOLE thing a mess, girl!

  • BuffaloBarbara

This is just a whole lot of crazy.

I say, keep the necklaces.  I’m okay with the big, clunky things.  Change every other thing about the look, from shoes to hairstyle.

And can I say, I’d really like to see an end to the “Why yes, I do bleach my hair aggressively every morning” look?

    • libraangel

Shoulda stayed with red hair anyway

  • Coco Cornejo

Is that a back bow? Not good.

  • frannyprof

    She looks like Crood.

  • Melizmatic

Sorry, but the original design is pretty unflattering to begin with, but then she added the superfluous t-shirt… and the ugly necklace…

AND the pumps, which should have been black…

    I just can’t.

  • Someone tried to turn that dress into a daytime look, when we all know it should have gone to feed a bonfire somewhere.  Hey, her makeup looks great though.

  • But then it IS probably a $300 t-shirt…  And the jewelry is FUG!

  • PeaceBang

She is so gamely trying to make it work but you can tell she hates it, can barely stand up straight, and wishes she was in bed with her boyfriend and a bowl of Fruit Loops.

  • Crystal

The outfit is a hot mess… but I think the hair and makeup are pretty!

  • thinkzinc

Eating some food might pep her up a bit.

  • MaryAtRealityTea

It’s such a cute dress… why with the t-shirt and lame pumps? Bright jewelry and bright shoes, please!

  • bd73

she doesn’t have a shape which should make it easy for her to wear darn near anything. that’s what makes this so confusing. i’m guessing the t-shirt is throwing off the fit of the dress.

  • frederieke

I actually like the dress better with a t-shirt shoved under

  • roadtrip1000

Does she have some type of a contract with Lanvin? If so maybe she’s trying to get out of it. That’s the only explanation I can see for this outfit.

  • Nonmercisansfacon

What is … I don’t even know. The shape of this dress is all kinds of WRONG. This suggests that her vertebral column is terribly askew making her weirdly alien-shaped.

  • who cares. at least she looks healthy. the photo of the model has me thinking someone should be calling 911 or at least staging an intervention.

  • kathrineb

Oh look another pair of putty pumps. When does this stop?

  • YUCK and YUCK.  and then i got to the pumps.  i can say no more.

eta: yes i can. she’s wearing so much eyeliner that she can hardly open her eyes. again.
