Emily VanCamp at “An Evening with Revenge”

Posted on March 05, 2013

Y’know, we’d like an evening with Revenge. Then we’d like a night with Relaxing and perhaps a morning with Recriminations, to be followed by an afternoon with Retail.

Emily VanCamp attends Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ An Evening with “Revenge” in North Hollywood, California.

Oh, Miss Emily. We bear the standard for the cause of red carpet ladypants, but you are not helping our argument, dear.

In real life it’s less of an issue, but when you’re being photographed, you should never wear competing blacks. Inevitably, one of them is going to look cheaper than the other in pictures. While we like the idea of a short, kicky jacket, this one just looks proportionally wrong. It comes up so high on her waist that it makes her arms look too long. Plus, a pair of skinny pants like that needs something a little more substantial than a pharmacist’s jacket. Also, the shoes and blouse are boring as hell. A metallic or boldly colored blouse (possibly even a print or polka dot), a more substantial jacket, and some booties would have sent this off to the land of Perfect.

As it is, it’s more like something one wears to the office on the last day before laundry day.

Yes, that is exactly what it is. I would wear jeans on a Thursday (gasp!) if this was the last option I had hanging in my closet for work. If you’re barely passable for your meeting with HR, you probably shouldn’t be on the red carpet.

      • gabbilevy

         …you hang up your jeans?

        • formerlyAnon

           Heheheheh!

Some people have these annoyingly organized good habits.

    • Vlasta Bubinka

      Haiku
      Bank teller realness
      Stretch jeans for casual day
      Salute to Payless!

    • MilaXX

NO to all of it. No wait, I like the earrings.

      • lovelyivy

Good catch! They are hands down the cutest thing she’s wearing here.

Maybe it’s my screen, but her pants look really dark blue versus black.  Regardless, what a boring outfit.

    • jw_ny

those skinny pants are really great on her, but yes, the rest has got to go.

    • Sobaika

Imagine the same outfit with a hot pink blazer. She would have looked really cute.

      • Alyssa

I’m now feeling the need to go buy a hot pink blazer…

        • Sobaika

Do it, you will not regret it.

      • formerlyAnon

Heck, a hot pink shirt would have improved things exponentially.

      This.

An evening with Revenge!!  I didn’t know I needed it, but I do.. I do.

I’m on board with T&Lo re: black-on-black violence. Even in daytime, even in non-photo events, 2 different tints of black look cheap together. And there’s something odd in the way the jacket fits. It’s like it’s too tight and too loose simultaneously and causes her arms to stick out awkwardly, like there’s a magnetic force repelling them from Emily’s torso. It’s a good idea, but sloppy execution.

      • lovelyivy

That jacket is way too small. It’s like someone who is a size 6 buying a size 6P- cut entirely wrong for her.

Girl, that jacket was made for a shorter woman. One tall girl to another: the button is not supposed to be at your boobs.

Love the pants, though. This is basically what I wear to conferences, only I usually go with a brightly colored t-shirt – and, of course, a longer jacket.

    • Sara__B

Oops. The new junior file clerk shrunk her one and only suit. We’ll just pretend not to notice.

    • Alyssa

I quite like the skinny jeans, but I’m wearing a similar (much less expensive, I’m sure) pair in blue today. However, this is just plain boring for the red carpet. Where is the color?!

    • Deb_Lynn

This outfit: first day at her first office job

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I was going to say that this seems like the type of pseudo “suit” a high school student would wear because they don’t actually own a real suit.

    • Funkykatt

The waist is too high? I do understand her plight. I too am tall and the waists are ALWAYS too high. For that, I forgive her.

      • l_c_ann

        Funky,
Find someone who does alterations, lowering a waist is easy and very do-able.

        • Funkykatt

Really? It looks impossible, of course I can’t sew. But great, thank you. There was a red Kenneth Cole coat on sale at Macy’s clearance and it was perfect except for that dreaded waist (and belt to boot).

    • Trisha26

I am the queen of skinny pants/leggings – love the silhouette – but my one pair w/ankle zippers was worn once! They scratch, the tabs bang against your ankle bone, and they look cheap. And the competing blacks – just NO!

    • http://twitter.com/kerryev kerryev

Looks like what the girls in the high school Future Business Leaders Association would wear on presentation day.

    • tereliz

Laundry day. Yup. I would have at least reached for some more fun shoes, though.

    • Zippypie

      This is a pull-some-random-shit-that-kind-of-goes-because-it’s-the-same-color-out-of-the-closet-in-five-minutes-because-I-forgot-I-have-to-go-to-an-event look.

    • formerlyAnon

Correct on all points. AND that jacket fits like something that’s reasonably well fitting if you’re buying off the rack. Maybe I’m being picky but if I were a major role in a successful t.v. show, on the red carpet, I might want something that didn’t pull when buttoned.

    • kimmeister

Those pants look too much like leggings to be paired with a blazer.

      • 3boysful

YES!  I only realized they weren’t when I saw the zipper.

        • ballerinawithagun

I make sure that my leggings have some sort of trim (zippers, snaps, etc. to show that they are not just tights, my leggings with zippers look just like this, I say leggings) horrible outfit!!!

    • Imasewsure

Definitely first day as a law firm Summer Associate… I like the smile and the ankle zipper… the rest, dull and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    • http://www.facebook.com/AdriannaGrezak Adrianna Grężak

The top half looks like what I wore to my job interview yesterday. The bottom half looks like what I wore lounging around my apartment afterward

    • http://twitter.com/sillytwigg twigg

When I saw the shoes I thought “THOSE LOOK JUST LIKE FLATS I HAVE!….that I got at Target for $20.”

    • Anniebet

File this one in TLo’s “what were you thinking?” closet.

    • libraangel

ah, yawn. yawn. yawn. Sorry I can’t seem to stay awake when I look at this outfit. Maybe. I. am. boorrreeed

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

I think the problem with this jacket is that it was clearly meant to be worn with trousers, not skinny pants (which throws off the proportions). The problem with this look is that it looks far too much like a tight version of my work clothes. I wish IIII could wear leggings in my office.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Yeah, the too tight fit and the competing blacks make the whole ensemble look very cheap.

    • Airkisses

This seems a little dated, no? Like, I would have worn a blazer like that in the early 00s.

    • decormaven

Did her stylist forget to bring her RC outfit, and so dressed her in the assistant’s clothes out of desparation? That’s the only reason I can figure she’s wearing such a dowdy outfit. And those shoes are plebian.

    • H2olovngrl

Aww, I remember zippers on jean legs…I miss my Guess jeans.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JSGAZPEESHQT47ATH55GNOHHBY Erin

Okay, but I *love* her makeup.

The copy outshines the clothes. Bravo.

    • thecitysleeps

The only good thing about this outfit are the pants.  Those shoes are so hideous.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/47S737MGWCAZEZ73QOAFKDFEKQ Jill

She’s so pretty but she dresses like crap…come on Emily!  She always looks great on the show.

    • Vi Nguyen

i gotta say, i’m a pharmacist and my very first thought was “this is something i would wear to work”.

    • http://profiles.google.com/scaponigro Sarah Caponigro

This is what I wear to the office when it is Friday and I have run out of clothes! Haha

    • kathrineb

‘pharmacist’s jacket’ I LOLed. The jacket really bad! Why is she dressing so old?

    • pop_top

      Emily Thorne would never.
