Diane Lane at the Fellini Tribute in NYC

Posted on March 20, 2013

We’re really torn on this one.

Diane Lane attends the Caro Federico Theatrical Tribute to Federico Fellini in New York City.

On paper, Diane Lane in a creamy ladytux sounds like a great idea. And in truth, there’s nothing we can point to here (except the sad top and geriatric shoes) that we really hate. But this is just isn’t working for us as well as it should. We find we have a wishlist. We wish that jacket button had a little more oomph to it. We wish she’d worn a much more interesting top, even a men’s style button-down would have had more style to it. We wish the hem on the pants didn’t look so rough. We wish she’s picked shoes to pull out the color of that purse rather than relying on her toenails to do it. We wish she’d punctuated this look with just one piece of jewelry.

Basically, it’s a good idea brought down to real-world standards (she looks like a slightly chic attendee at your average wedding) by half-assed styling.

Awww, I don’t think her shoes are geriatric. I really like the look and the accessories seem pretty fab.

    • Missy Covington

Kinda hating the cream-on-white detail. It makes it look like that’s the part that just won’t come clean, no matter how many times you wash it.

      • MoHub

My reaction as well. The lapels look dirty.

    • Sobaika

I am HERE for this look in theory… but I can’t with that Hanes undershirt.

      • Vlasta Bubinka

But it is a tagless T she borrowed from Michael Jordan!

    • hughman

      Amarbored.

      • rh33

        Well played!

    • Sue_Asponte

“slightly chic attendee at your average wedding” is pretty much the height of my ambition. This is pretty great. Not red-carpet worthy, but the background looks like an average wedding anyway. (She’s definitely outdressed the young lady behind her in the Laboutins.)

She should have gone Miss-New-York-at-Miss-America-2013 and worn a scoopneck cami and NOT THOSE SHOES with that cute suit.

    • Bethany Mito

“Geriatric” is the key word — the whole look makes her appear old and boxy. And that cream color isn’t doing the right thing for her complexion.

It reads a little too “just trying to age gracefully here”. It would have been better if it was more “newly single, aging like a goddess, suck it Brolin” which I believe she is fully capable of.

It reminds me of what the more stylish lady denizens of a Boynton Beach retirement community would wear. Especially those heinous shoes. Just not working. And I love me some Duane Lane.

      • fiestyfashionfem

Hey dudette! Don’t knock Boynton Beach. I’m right across the bridge! (Do you remember that time Michael Kors said something about one of the PR designers’ looks being a BB look? – Loved!)

        • http://twitter.com/urban_gypsy Tess Danesi

My mom lives in Boynton, which is why I know it well. :-) And yes, I remember, I do miss Kors…

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Wha??? Not seeing the problem. I think she looks chic as hell. Love it.

    • http://twitter.com/Moondragonic Charlotte

Nice enough suit, but it’s missing that infamous ‘pop’ of colour to make it into a great outfit.

    • Janet B

A better fit to the jacket and a different cami/blouse/tank/shirt would do wonders for her.

    • Alyssa

      Ugly undershirt, gorgeous clutch.

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

Needed a crisp shirt and a brooch. Might have gone even older, but could have gone all Janelle Monaie!

Awards Dinner for top-selling Realtors in the tri-county area!

Where she and Carrie Underwood are going to get into a hellacious cat fight over The Eptstien’s mansion and who gets to list it.

      • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

        HA! Yes!

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000905542323 Rhonda Shore

Sadly because i like Diane Lane very much…

      • drdarke

Yeah – you got it, zenobar . She looks like she’s here to sell me a house, not attending a Fellini tribute.

Pity, because a white ladytux should work on her like gangbusters – and yes, she’s every year her age and absolutely radiant with it. She is an advertisement for Chic&Hot Over Forty – that outfit looks like something my Best Friend’s Pushing-Ninety Mom would wear….

I think she looks fantastic. Jewelry isn’t necessary; she’s working a minimalist look. Love.

    • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

Totally agree. The idea is great, but the devil is in the (lack of) details!

    • RebeccaKW

She’s beautiful and she doesn’t look terrible. But it is basically a t-shirt. The shoes seem pretty ugly. Some jewelry might have helped this along.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

She looks great and this is a perfectly lovely daytime suit. Which is precisely the problem.

    • MilaXX

I like it, even the plain white tee. Even though it would be very matchy, I wish she was wearing a deep emerald earring. I do agree that a better top would have elevated this look.

      • formerlyAnon

Oooh, the emerald idea is good!

    • Sara__B

A great suit brought down by an over-reliance on fabulous hair. The styling is almost non-existent.

    • Little_Olive

I would not contest you if you said this was a picture from 1990.

      • Libby Larson

Exactly. This just screams “Celine Dion” at me..

    • lamamu

I wish the pants were a straight leg.

    • ringthing

Agree with all. But dang, she’s gorgeous and aging realistically. It’s refreshing.

      • http://twitter.com/omg_dora Dora K.

Exactly. I just love looking at her!

    • http://twitter.com/lolacestmoi Lola Channing

Sorry Lads, but a button down? Really?

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

        Absolutely. It’s a classic.

        • libraangel

WOW,T&L! You read all our comments? You have time to read all our comments? WOW! Ta

        • http://twitter.com/lolacestmoi Lola Channing

how about we compromise with a lovely Mens style shirt sans button down.

    • PastryGoddess

      Her face!. Imnotjealousorbitteratall

From the neck up she looks great

      • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

She has been achingly lovely since ‘The Outsiders’. Damn her.

    • PrunellaV

The suit doesn’t look like it fits quite right. It’s draping funny. I hate to see her not looking great.

    • JulieTy

The fabric looks cheap to me, but that could just be the photo. Overall, though, it’s a dowdy look on a spectacular woman. Such a shame. At least she’s not doing the usual “See how hot I am?” look of the newly-single, though.

    • http://twitter.com/Mlle_D Donyelle

      The Bleh Divorcee.

    • libraangel

      Whiter than WASP

    • Anathema_Device

It just isn’t sharp enough. It could have been chic, but the shoes, the top under the suit, and lack of jewelry really doom it to geriatric resort wear.

    • Zippypie

That’s not her color cream. And that horrid color trim of the lapel looks like the color of a 70s refrigerator. Lady pants are a yes, but this is just not a good choice.

    • http://twitter.com/CaitrinofFenris Caitrin

The whole outfit is just “off”. Plus the trim on the V of the jacket looks like masking tape to me. She’s so very, very, pretty and could rock a plastic bag with some pumps and a necklace… but this outfit kinda makes me sad for her.

    • LaSylphide

      Snore…

    • another_laura

How can she be wearing NO jewelry?!? And those shoes. It’s a shanda. It coulda been a contenduh.

    • formerlyAnon

I am NOT torn about the pantsuit (because, mes enfants, that is what it looks like and I do not fear to utter the word), I LOVE it on her. I hate the shoes, here, though. The shoe color and the visibly painted toenails read very “getting on but still game” to me, possibly because of the shoe/toenail polish choices of some of my older relatives. You are no doubt correct about the need for jewelry, and I will go so far as to say that the younger shoes needed an edgier purse to accompany them.

    • boweryboy

Weird coincidence: I just watched “Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains” last night on Netflix.

While going through this post all I could hear in my head is I’m a waste of time…I’m a waste of time.

As a 12 year gayboy I SO wanted to be a Skunk.

    • http://twitter.com/sfjesse Jesse

How old is this woman? I am hoping old, because she looks very self-consciously “mature.” This style of dressing looks like what Faye Dunaway should be striving to achieve.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I just said aloud, to no one “Well I think she looks really appropriate.” Is that the Kiss O Death?

    • Indigo54

      Boring as hell.

    • Diego!

She is 50 Y.O.!!! And she looks amazing IMO! I love you Diane! You’ll always be my favorite :D

    • EEKstl

Yup, yup and yup. The suit is nice, the clutch fab, but that top is just pathetic and would earrings have killed her? She really could have knocked it out of the park with appropriate styling.

    • Nancy Dunn

I would have loved this with a purple, royal blue or deep green sheath underneath. I,love, love, love the suit, but it is too boring this way.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

The worst thing about this is that it’s painfully boring. If she’d done something to liven it up, it could have had potential (though I think the fit on the suit is really bad, too).

    • snich11

      It’ so…beige.
