Cameron Diaz for Interview Russia

Posted on March 11, 2013

At our early-morning, cat-infested editorial meeting, as we were going over the post topics for the day, Tom innocently asked who the blonde woman was in the Interview mag spread. “It kinda looks like an Eastern European Cameron Diaz.”

“Have some more coffee. That IS Cameron Diaz.”

Cameron Diaz covers the March 2013 issude of Interview Russia magazine photographed by Daniele Duella + Iango Henzi and styled by Patti Wilson.

Well, once you figure out who it is, the pictures become a little more arresting, mainly because you’ll keep staring at them trying to figure out what they did to her to make her look like that. All things considered, it’s not a bad editorial. It’s never a bad idea for an actress to demonstrate that she can look different from how the public expects her to look. But even so; it’s not really her thing, is it? This hard-edged, Euro-with-a-bondage-twist kind of thing. We’re not offended or prudish about it; we just don’t think it’s the best way to feature her looks and persona. Then again, maybe she’s trying to craft a new one now that she’s hit her dreaded forties as an actress.

    What is that bad smell?

  • Little_Olive

Not feeling it. Hate the second picture -which I feel was intended to be the high point.

    • BKagainwiththesweatpants

Absolutely. She looks like Desperate Bo Derek in the 2nd pic. Yech.

    • JosephLamour

This just reminds me of that other time she wore nothing and it looked desperate and it made me sad. I forget for what magazine… Esquire… it was Esquire. She’s a lot less salacious in this one.

  • Karen Belgrad

Didn’t she already go through her bondage phase last October?  In Esquire?  In a sad, sad Terry Richardson shoot?

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Right – I recall a post about how sad it was that she had to go the trashy/sexy route to prove she’s still got it.

    • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I was just about to say this. Rinse, Wash, Repeat.  I can smell the desperation from here.

  • Sobaika

She’s pulling it off a lot better than I would have expected, although the hair in the second shot is very Something About Mary.

    • RebeccaKW

I think her face, the makeup, is reminding me of her “The Mask” days.

    • StellaZafella

       “There’s Something… Naughty… About Mary. ;0

  • Pablo Ulloa

i smell madonna, courtney love, and drugs

  • Annabelle Archer this is…it’s quite…I feel sort of…she looks…

    Yeah. I can’t. I can’t handle Croatia Cammy.

  • Shannon Campe

She looks like she should be dancing in a window in Amsterdam. Not a fan.

    • H3ff

Or, more accurately, sitting down chain-smoking.

  • Kiltdntiltd

  • Introspective

something strange is going on here. i dont know if its the photoshop or the makeup (or a surgical “refresh” gone wrong), but her nose in pics 1 and 2 looks wonky. like mr potatohead detachable wonky.

the rest of it seems cliche. we know youre hot and can be the girl next door too. How about a grownup honest to god fashion shoot for a grownup woman? embrace the 40s. dont fight them girl.

    • ballerinawithagun

She has always had a wonky nose. She is not and never has been a classic beauty, more quirky and with age those quirks are showing even more. (As they do with all of us!)

    • MaryAtRealityTea

I’m going with serious contrast make up and equally serious photoshop. The cover looks Debbie Harry in her prime and Cameron looks absolutely nothing like Debbie Harry in her real face.

  • ashtangajunkie

I thought she was Courtney Love before I read the title. Not my favourite look for Cameron Diaz, but I don’t hate it.

    • NC_Meg

I also thought it was Courtney Love on the cover.

  • charlotte

What the what? Is that her Avatar or something?

  • Terrence Terry McKee

It looks like she’s had a fair amount of filler in her cheekbone area, pulling up the corners of her mouth . . . I’m commenting totally by memory of what she’l looked like in the past . . . Something was definitely tweaked . . .

    • AnaRoW

She’s always had those cheekbones and the corners of her mouth pulled up. It’s probably the makeup, Photoshop, or lack of her usual smile that you’re seeing.

      • RebeccaKW

I agree.  We are so used to the happy, surfer-girl Cameron that when we see sultry Cameron, we get confused.  But look up some older pictures of her, when she was modeling, when she was in The Mask.  I think this looks like her, from back then.

  • Ginny Ellsworth

I saw a headline on one of the news websites “Cameron Diaz:Still Hot at 40!” and was really annoyed. Like they needed to apologize for her getting older.

It should have read “Cameron Diaz: Hot at 40!”

    • Little_Olive

Not even. “Hot at 40” IMO carries the subtext “what are the odds” or something to that effect.

      • Ginny Ellsworth

I don’t really see it like that but it did read better than “We have some half naked pictures of Cameron Diaz, so ya’ll come over and take a peek!”

      • makeityourself

Yes, if they were really serious about it, the head would have been: Cameron Diaz — Hot!

  • MaryanneGirl

Look, even if dominatrix-chic is her thing or not, round of applause for the fact that she’s 40 years old. Work that body, miss thing! (Seriously, though, brush your hair and put a shirt on.)

    • kimmeister

Some underwear would be nice too.

      • MaryanneGirl

        Eh…I guess. If that’s your thing.  :)

  • alyce1213

    Just ghastly.
    And sad.
    With dog hair.

  • MilaXX

The first two look like more 80’s retreads and the last  one looks like she wandered into Rhianna’s closet & played dress up. Yet it’s all very boring.

  • Lori

She’s a dollop of gel away from going full Flock of Seagulls. What is up with that?

  • Heather

    Um, Deborah Harry?

    • Ginny Ellsworth

I was thinking Olga Korbut. But that is old school.

    • paginatrix

       It’s Ellen Barkin’s big sister.

      • CallMeJane

I was thinking Ellen Barkin with a dose of Olivia Newton-John from the Let’s Get Physical days. In the second photo I thought I saw a headband and was really frightened.

  • Claire Scott

the cover pic looks so much like helena christianson

  • bertkeeter

    A little perestroika for Carmen?

  • marilyn

This looks makes her seem older.

  • CeeQ

    Trying too hard.

  • Anathema_Device

My only issue is that it seems actresses in their 40s always do the bondage/fetish/undressed/blah blah blah editorials. It is just so tired and overdone.

  • homofascist

Ah, her LOOK AT ME!!!  I AM STILL SUPER SEXY!!!  GUYS TOTALLY WANT TO FUCK ME!!! press tour continues…

  • schadenfreudelicious

Cameronia Diazovitch just isn’t working for me….

  • nancylee61

Didn’t she do the Crotch Shot already??? She reeks of desperation. And really – she is completely unrecognizable. WTF????

  • Pants_are_a_must

Eau de Courtney Love all over this editorial, and that is not a good thing.

  • piecesofconfetti

The pictures are whatever, but… that’s not her face.

    • Spicytomato1

Agreed. She’s almost unrecognizable on the cover. And that skirt? Abominable.

  • KatyMightHave

And now begins the “I’ve Still Got It” portion of her career. For other examples, see Berry, Halle and Aniston, Jennifer.

    • EEKstl

      …and Kidman, Nicole.

      • demidaemon

In Kidman, Nicole’s defense, she was always more of a fashion girl, and she isn’t so much of a one-note on the red carpet.

        • EEKstl

Agreed, but I was referring specifically to this editorial TLo posted some time back:

    • buildmeatower

Also Klum, Heidi. Though one could argue that she never really had any other phase.

  • Jackie4g

Does the actress get anything to say about the shoot, or is it the decision of the photographer and stylist? I’ve seen that Rachel Zoe program and it doesn’t seem as though the person who is posing has a lot of choice in the matter. However, if she is contracted to do the photo shoot and that’s what they have when she shows up, then Cameron Diaz is just being a professional and doing what is called for. It’s for an Eastern European market, maybe that’s what they wanted?

    • l_c_ann

Eastern Europe encompasses a lot of countries with substantial Muslim populations.  So….at least some of Eastern Europe would not be amused by this.

      • Jackie4g

Not trying to be a wiseguy, but wouldn’t that population be forbidden from reading a magazine like Interview anyway? My feeling is that this kind of an editorial is tasteless where ever it is.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Well, it is a little better than the Terry Richardson one she did a few months back…but that’s not saying much.

  • lobsterlen

For some reason the photo essay reminded me of the horrifying Russian designer drug Crocodile. I almost feel bad that is what I was remained of because she certainly looks healthy. But still that’s what I thought of. I suppose the essay has a heroin chic vibe and then I recalled reading about that drug.

  • decormaven

That second shot gives me a Bowie Diamond Dogs era vibe. If the photos weren’t captioned, I would not recognize her. If this is for promotion, it’s not working.

    • Lilak

(Glad I saw your comment before I wrote mine.)  Esp. in pics 1 and 2, it’s like she (or the art director) is coat-tailing on our friend Mr. Bowie’s latest reappearance.  And a doubled-down embarrassing mix with the mutton-dressed as-lamb vibe she’s been emanating lately.

  • unbornfawn

Not crazy about this total look for her. I do like the departure from the sweet image. She should take a a bit of the edge and start incorporating it to her look, it would serve her well.

  • margaret meyers

    This looks desperate.

  • guest2visits

I thought these were very expressive and more emotional than similar type editorials. Maybe because she’s playing the part of
Eastern European Tart so well. Maybe it’s because she’s older. She evokes a kind of blue, sultry, strong character; and she looks good.

  • Trisha26

Didn’t she do something equally desperate last year? This is horrible.

    • l_c_ann

Last years almost made this look tasteful….nah….equally rough and unpolished female.

  • Alyssa

Nope. She’s going to have to fight off the forties with something else. As others said, this brings up the memories of that terrible Esquire editorial…which I was hoping to have permanently forgotten.

  • another_laura

I think I understand this, because it looks and smells very much for the Russian market.  This does not mean it is good, mind you.

  • Hell Yes, I Would!

I thought it was one of the Olsen twins from the thumbnail…

  •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Here I am overthinking an “Interview” editorial, but my god am I weary of the I STILL GOT IT thing that actresses seem obligated to perform in order to maintain relevance.  Sigh.

    • BrooklynBomber

  • PeaceBang

This made me laugh and clap with glee. There’s so much contouring on her nose she looks like a Rankin-Bass claymation figure. Like if they re-did “Santa Claus is Coming To Town” with a sexy domme Burgermeistermeisterburger. The mullet is *inspired.*

  • 4JJ

She always looks like she’s trying too hard (unfortunately she has never tried anywhere close to hard enough in acting class), but this is puzzling indeed.

  • ThaliaMenninger

    What happened to her face?

  • aahlife

Those are not her original cheekbones.

  • MaryAtRealityTea

I think she looks very pretty on the cover. Those cheekbones are so Debbie Harry, but yeah it’s a bit too performing and trying to regenerate.

  • libraangel

    It is called p-h-o-t-s-h-o-p-p-e-d

  • Sau-Chih Feng

Was…was she styled by Heidi Klum?

Wait, of course not. Heidi would have just told Cameron to get off and see how a real Eurotrash does it.

  • Irish Rodriguez Reyes

Cameron Diaz does Chloë Sevigny does fashion alter (definitely Russian, definitely early 1980’s, definitely questionable genitalia).

  • kathrineb

The pictures are kind of cool and I try but I can’t accept grungy hair like this ugh. Woa I am becoming my mum.

  • Dawn Sinclair

or she’s channeling bondage Dusty Springlield the Mullet Years

  • sleah_in_norcal

CRAZY hair.  those “pants” look like a bondage device.  ouch.

  • JDreesen

Lulz @ the dreaded forties reference. Like Jenna agreeing to play the role of someone’s mother on 30 Rock:

“Don’t cry for me, Tartine. I’ve had a full life…But I’m 41 now. Time to die.”

  • Carly Warnock

    Not in her wheelhouse.
