WERQ: Rihanna in Azzedine Alaia

Posted on February 11, 2013

Girl pretty much owned the night with this look:

Rihanna attends the Grammy 2013 awards in an Azzedine Alaia dress paired with Neil Lane jewelry and Manolo Blahnik shoes.

It’s sexy without being slutty. It’s striking and glamorous. The color looks downright amazing on her. And her hair and makeup are giving us all life. Simply stunning. You WERQ that drama shit, girl. SNAPS of FIRE.

In other Grammys news, People magazine’s “Style Watch” asked us for our four faves and one least-fave look from the night. We said “no,” of course, because we’re shy about giving our opinions.

    WERQ indeed!!

  • Sobaika

I did a mini-gasp when I saw her on the red carpet! She looks beautiful and this was an unexpected turn for her.

    • Meg0GayGuys6

At first glance, I didn’t recognize her! Unexpected, indeed! Esp at the Grammy’s where people tend to bring out the unconventional outfits.  I wonder if that memo changed anyone’s plans for what they were going to wear.

  • M_E_S

Her hair looks AMAZING.  Everything about this look is basically flawless- makeup, jewlery, nail color, everything.  Girl TURNED IT OUT. Other stars take notice: sheer doesn’t have to be slutty.

    • I could have went without seeing her nipples.

      • barbarienne

I don’t mean to get cranky at you, Katrin, because you are very not alone in that opinion, but you just triggered one of my recent ranty feelings.

I’m so sick of people getting down on nipples. For the love of Crom, women have nipples, and most fashionable women’s clothing does not include many layers over the chest (as men’s does–undershirt+shirt+jacket).

This is one thing I wish people would just get over. So what if you can see her nipples? There are whole cultures, past and present, where women go/went topless. This is fashion in an artistic venue, not a church social.

        • Kristin McNamara

To barbarienne: Not the OP here, but I totally get what you’re saying. HOWEVER, I think in this case, the reason we’re seeing her right nipple so prominently is that it appears to be pierced. (Check out pic #2… you can basically make out the outline of the two balls that are always on the ends of the rod or U that nipples get pierced with.) Otherwise, I don’t think this dress would be that big of a niptroversy.

          • Agreed, plus fwiw they make little adhesive pasty-type things that are designed for just this purpose. Take off the giant nipple jewelry and put in something smaller and slap one of those bad boys on there. Any stylist/assistant worth her salt would have them in an emergency bag, along with needle and thread and fashion tape. I don’t care what kind of an artist you are, while this isn’t a church social, it IS a public event. If I were her, I’d want publicity about how awesome I looked, not “OMG, did you see Rihanna’s dress?!?! It was so sheer you could see her nipple!”

Plus, most tasteful women’s fashion includes a bra, so the argument about men’s fashion having more layers is a bit misleading. Most dresses traditionally had built-in foundations – that alone would give you more layers.

          • Carly Warnock

I truly doubt Rihanna gives two fucks is you see her nipple. She probably wanted them to be visible, this is Rihanna we’re talking about. I kind of like that she was classy and striking and still a bit herself with her nipple ring showing, aka a total badass.

          • barbarienne

You have succinctly summed up what annoys me so about nipple-shaming.

Nipple shaming is a few orders of magnitude from insisting women wear burquas, but they’re coming out of the same headspace.

          • Completely disagree….. I think seeing the outline of her nipples added to the relaxed yet polished feel of the dress, and obviously made the whole look way sexier. And it’s nice not to see boobs pushed up and/or bolted in like they usually are on the red carpet.

        • TropiCarla

THIS. I have headlights pretty much 24/7. There’s nothing I can do to help it. It is so stupid the way people react to seeing evidence of nipples. I did start wearing lightly-lined bras when I was teaching high-school boys to avoid any problems but I hate that it’s even an issue just going about my regular daily business.

Okay, rant over. I’ll now get back to curbing my impulse to shriek about Rihanna’s awful fake hairline and the OP’s butchering of the past participle.

      • laddie103

When I first saw her, the hair reminded me of “Mars Attacks” Seriously – the hairline is high? The dress beautiful.

  • Imasewsure

Gorgeous WERQ but I hate hate hate that hair… Hopefully her Tyra moment will pass quickly

    • AthenaJ

same here, she’s got too much forehead for a straight down the middle part

    • Hair looks a little weavetastic.

      • TerryMH

Is it a weave?  How did she go from a pixie cut a month ago to long locks now?  Weave or wig?  This looks pretty natural to my untrained eye but she had really short hair not too long ago and if this was a weave, wouldn’t we be able to see a line where the hair was “glued” together?  Could the short hair have been a wig?

Is there a hairdresser out there to enlighten me?  Her dress is fab, but I’m admittedly obsessed with celebrity hair.

        • Jae

all weave is not glued in…it could be sewn in which basically attaches it to her braided hair underneath. Although I think it is a wig…

        • littlemac8

Her real hair is shaved up one side, isn’t it??

      • KC

I don’t think her hair looks weavetastic at all. I’ve seen plenty of girls whose hair looks weavetastic, hers looks relatively natural.

  • I’d prefer it if I couldn’t see her nipples. I am SUCH a prude in my old age.

    • SassieCassy

i cant see any nip. maybe its my computer screen. i can see her underboob tattoo….

      • Oh honey, if you watch her interview with Ryan, I thought they were trying to reach out and touch him. It was so distracting.

        • Lola67

It was much more noticeable on tv, wondered if there’s photoshopping done here? Did you happen to catch the deadly look she gave one of her security peeps when they accidentally stepped on her dress when she was getting out of the car?

          • bxbourgie

I saw it!  She looked like she was gonna rip his heart out.  Then turned around, and smiled and waved to the people like that never happened.

          • IAmJ

Yes! Rewound it twice because I thought I had misinterpreted.

      • kimmeister

The underboob tattoo was super noticeable when she was performing during the Bob Marley tribute.

    • Sometimes I play a game where I imagine myself in 30 years trying to deal with new fashions and technology.
Calling my daughter: “The holograph is glitching again! Help me send a movie to your father on Mars!”

Reading TLo: “Oh, I could never wear one of those new areola shirts!”

  • She looks so demure and quite fresh but has she lost a lot of weight?

  • funfashionfan

She is almost unrecognizable here… all glamour and no edge (maybe a *little* edge in the jewelry). I don’t love the construction of the dress, but her hair, makeup, and the color are so beautiful she deserves the WERQ!

  • EEKstl

Wow!  Perfection.  As for People, they should request opinions from NO ONE ELSE.

  • I’m sorry but her nipples were waving to us and, for me, it completely ruined the classy look she finally wore.  Its 2013, there is plenty to be done about that situation.

  • FrayedMachine

She does look flawless except for the talons attached to the ends of her fingers. I really wish that hooker nail length fad would go away. It’s just so cah-ree-py. Otherwise OOMPH. I love that lip color on her.

  • A. W.

I loved the look until I saw the pictures of her snuggling up to Chris Brown in it. Killed the vibe for me.

    •  Chris Brown is the worst accessory EVER.

    • AthenaJ

    • SassieCassy

At this point I think we should all leave be. There is nothing that can be said about Chris brown that has not been said before. This is a sad pattern of women returning and forgiving abusers and for some reason the talk always is about how wrong she is rather than about why Chris Brown was even nominated for a grammy to begin with. she seems to have a ‘fuck you ima do what i want to’ attitude about the whole thing so this response from fans only goads her.

      my two cents.

      • A. W.

If anything, her return to her abuser shows that the abuse cycle is hard to break regardless of fame, wealth, etc. It’s an important lesson for everyone to learn. I really hope she gets the help she needs to get out of this ugly situation. Her public persona is pretty insufferable aside from the Chris Brown stuff, but I’m still on her side. It just means that whenever I see her looking flawless and fierce and then see Chris Brown there, it makes me frown out of sadness and frustration. 🙁

        • Elizabetta1022

A therapist I interviewed once said that “on average, it takes abused women 3 tries to leave their abuser.” I have seen this to be true with friends, family and acquaintances I’ve known who were in abusive relationships. I just hope Rhianna is able to get out before she is seriously hurt by this man, who seems to be mentally unstable, volatile and violent.

  • So beautiful! And BRAVO girl for working this braless. it’s such a natural thing, it looks totally awesome and people still get upset about it. LOVE this.

  • Vaniljekjeks

This is the best she’s ever looked.

  • Absolutely stunning. I gasped when I saw this.

I’m referring to your People feature, of course. But Rhianna looks amazing too.

  • MilaXX

She looked great and I liked her song as well. Her life choices leave a lot to be desired, but her fashion did not disappoint.

    • snarkykitten

can we not do this about her personal life?

      • MilaXX

In her case I think it’s pretty much the elephant in the room.

        • Northern_Light_27

An elephant in the room is the obvious thing everyone dances around but doesn’t mention. Yet never does a post on Rihanna go by (or even a video posted on YouTube) without her personal life getting a lot of or even most of the discussion. I think a better animal analogy is the poor, sad, departed equine that everyone is standing around with mallets.

      • I think its warranted, given that many young men and women look up to celebrities as idols.

        • snarkykitten

that is such bs thinking. I know it’s the way things are, but celebrities are people, too. and let’s not forget: she’s a victim here. But most people don’t want to acknowledge that famous people can be victims of domestic abuse. and that cycle is hard to break.

          • Honestly, people always bring up the ‘cycle of abuse’ regarding Rihanna, but do we even have any indication that he continues to abuse her? Let’s not forget that they were separated for three years after he beat her up. It’s not like she didn’t have time to get her head straight (and so did he for that matter).

          • Sobaika

DV aside, he’s almost a bigger douchebag in his public behavior than before. But I think people bring up the cycle comment more for perspective: returning to one’s abuser (whether or not the relationship itself is still abusive) is not at all uncommon.

I don’t like participating in this type of commentary too much, it gets way too close to victim blaming for me. it is what it is and she had a great night. Hoping she’s safe and healthy.

          • I get where that kind of talk comes from, but I also think it sort of negates her agency. As far as I can tell, she seems to be a woman who made an informed decision to give her douchebag ex another chance, after having had three years to think on it. The cycle of abuse just paints her as a helpless victim who couldn’t stand up to her abusers emotional manipulations and needs us to open her eyes for her.

          • MilaXX

I feel as much concern for him as I do her, and as much as one can for a celeb that I do not know personally. He appears self destructive and in dire need of therapy. The 2 of them together just feels like an accident waiting to happen.

          • MilaXX

This is a woman who regularly post herself and Chris Brown in bed together, as well as herself smoking weed. Frankly I thought she looked like she had smoked a doobie in the limo ride on the way.

Honestly I think they both need help.

          • snarkykitten

             oh no, not weed!

          • MilaXX

yes I realize that’s not a big deal theses days. My point is girlfriend lives her life messy and doesn’t seem to give 2 damns who knows it. I have always thought she worked a red carpet, but I also find her a bit of a ratchet train wreck.

  • LuisaNL

damn. girlfriend looks good and she knows it! WERQ it, RiRi!

  • Jeanettesca

She looks beautiful. But…very plastic. Like a Barbie.

  • StellaZafella

1001 Arabian Nighties…but…it’s the Grammies so: Just lose the nipples and it looks good.

Oh and, like everybody else says: Tyra called, she says you can keep her hair.

  • alyce1213

Exquisite dress, unbelievable fit — the best she’s ever worn, the best I’ve ever seen her look.
One quibble: I wish she’d gone with her natural, short edgy cut instead of the cheesy looking big hair wig, which cheapens the gown.  And maybe less nipplage, but then again for Rihanna, this was discreet.

    • In_Stitches

Her short, black Caesar cut would have looked fantastic here.  The wig makes her so generic.

      • Agreed. I think that is still her best look, hands down. Her face is unbelievably gorgeous and when she does the insane hair it distracts from it.

  • Janet B

    So beautiful.

  • aeb1986

she looked absolutely stunning. amazing color on her and hair/makeup is flawless. although isn’t that a wig..? just a few weeks ago i saw her with half of her head shaved.

    • MilaXX

most gals and some of the men are wearing some variation of weaves, extensions and hair pieces these days.

  • thecitysleeps

She looked so pretty in this dress.  Red is definitely her colour.  I also loved her simple and sexy black dress she had on for her Stay performance,  and even her crop top and long skirt for the Bob Marley tribute.  I thought it was appropriate.  I think she did own last night in all aspects.

I’m just sad she’s back in her abuser’s arms.  But that’s out of point.

  • Catiline

    It’s not just a werq, it’s a DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANG.

  • Gorgeous. The hair elongates her forehead and I hate the nails, but those are minor quibbles.

  • Stubenville

That color is so orange-y that it could be difficult with other skin tones, but she looks lovely. A little sheer goes a long way, and I’m glad she didn’t feel the need for the now tired Angelina Jolie leg slit. Two thumbs up.

  • mozzer0906

Agree, she owned the night, she looks fantastic!

  • mjude

i have to say this is one of her best looks.  wow boys!

  • stubbornthoughts

Made from the nectar of Zeus, this dress.

  • B_C_J

Beautiful dress worn by a beautiful woman. She looks lovely. If I could change anything, I would get rid of the long nails and maybe cover  her forehead a little. However, these are details and there is no denying that she looks exquisite.

  • julnyes

She looked amazing – definitely a WERQ. The outfit she changed into for the Bob Marley tribute was HIDDY!

  • I think she looks gorgeous too! Sexy and classy at the same time.

  • Personal best here, but I can’t look at her and feel anything but pity.

  • LipstickForPigs

I am really not a fan of her style choices, but this is fierce.

  • AnnaleighBelle

I’m not a fan, but she is stunning here

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

GASP!!!  Um, excuse me, Beautiful Lady, but who are you and what have you done with the real Rihanna?

  • conniemd

Without commenting on the “why” I though Rhianna jumped the shark stylistically and musically a couple of years ago. She has a beautiful voice and she went into all this over the top sexpot in terms of her clothes, her performances, etc. Loved seeing her look beautiful and her duet song last night was just hauntingly beautiful. Sultry rather than hooker suits her and is sexy too.

  • Carla_Charlton

My one criticism is that the dress should have been a touch more streamlined in the skirt; the train created by all the fabric looks too formal for the Grammys.  But she looks fantastic and the dress really flatters her in every way.

  • BuckeyeLou

The color looks great on her, I like the soft & flowy look of the dress, but hate the wig & the orange nails…other than that she’s IN

  • kimmeister

    Her makeup is flawless.

  • laurenoodle

GORGEOUS! I love her in red

  • ojosazules

Best I’ve ever seen her look. That dress is beautiful.

  • Zippypie

She looks stunning. A definite WERQ.

  • afabulous50

I wish I even remotely liked her as a person…nice look though..

  • Rachel Schain

So nice of Chris Brown to allow her to attend this year.

  • Dagney

Gorgeous.  And hats off to the TAILOR.  This is what good tailoring looks like.  No weird side boob, no wrinkly bodice, no stretchy, over-wrought, yanked fabric.  Well done.

  • Sara__B

Snaps of fire, indeed. Simply gorgeous! (And this old fuddy-duddy quite enjoyed the way she stuck it to the network’s last minute attempt to save us from too much exposed flesh at the Grammy’s by wearing a demurely covered-up TRANSPARENT dress. You go, girl!)

  • guest2visits

Missed the show; there was a time I would never have missed Grammys!
I think she looks gorgeous; but initially thought her tat was a sweat stain. Not good.   I wondered if she and her style team were
deliberately pushing back at the clothing-code with the obvious nipples; but really this is Rihanna’s standard measure of disclosure.

  • f_yeah_marie

If only her life decisions are as good as (some of) her fashion choices…

  • She does look beautiful, but mostly I am commenting to say Congratulations, T and LO on the People gig!

  • This is why I’ll never understand the fixation so many starlets have on huge boob jobs. You can totally see her braless breasts and yet, she doesn’t look even slightly slutty. Gorgeous.

  • Clueless_Jock

  • shelley514

WERQ is right!!!!!  She was the girl on fire last at the Grammys. This gown is simply stunning, and Rihanna has the beauty and body to rock it right.

  • minnye

Dress is gorg but that looks like Cocker Spaniel hair to me.

  • She looks good here and reminiscent of her “S.O.S.” days, in terms of the styling.  It’s a “werq” but…

Styled like this and with that hair, she looks like just any (very) pretty girl trying to be Beyonce.  I like her better a bit edged out and weirder.  Still nice job Team Riri.

  • Beardslee

She is such a pretty young woman and it’s nice to see her let good old fashioned youth and beauty do the work here.  Lovely dress.

  • You guys like this? The only thing I like about this look is the train, the bodice looks like something Tina Knowles would have put Kelly Rowland in back in the 90s. I find the colour (dress and lip) really harsh on her. Also, I had hoped she had given up on these unflattering forehead baring weaves from her “pon d replay” days.

  • It’s a stunning dress.  Hard to be sexy and classy and see-through all at the same time but she managed it.  And she looks clean and gorgeous.  Too bad she had to ruin it with her Beatdown Brown accessory.  Yuk.

  • Judy_J

She does look gorgeous.  Red is definitely her color (but not haircolor).

  • She looked flawless and she knew it.

  • Love it. She’s all “Beyonce? Who’s Beyonce?”

  • BrooklynBomber

Check you out!! Congrats. Nice to be asked to dance, even if you don’t want to.

    Oh, and: beautiful dress.

  • Yes killer on all levels. Her under boob and hand tattoos make me feel ill though.

    • alyce1213

It’s unfortunate that you can slightly see the underboob tattoo through the dress.
The hand tattoos, just ugh.  I always think people will regret their tattoos.

  • Imasewsure

Another thing I love about this dress is the fact that there are no cut outs and no exposed belly to make it hoochi-ish… I don’t mind the sheer… just beautiful!!

  • butterflysunita

Wow.  She looks beautiful.  Love how the skirt flows at the bottom.  At a venue where it’s accepted to be tacky, slutty or odd she chooses to go glamorous instead. Well played.

  • CatherineRhodes

TLO: What did you tell People Magazine (4 faves, 1 unfave)?

  • RocknRollmom

Count me in as one of the old people—could do without the nipples.  And her hair and makeup are way way too plastic and fake.  Saying all that she looks beautiful and I don’t like her particularly.  I am not even going to start on the whole Chris Brown thing because it makes me both sad and angry.  And boy have my daughters heard my lectures on that one.

  • barbarienne

Even if the whole thing looked fug on her, I would have to give her (or her stylists) appreciation for matching red. You can get away with slightly-off colors in the cooler end of the spectrum, but reds are utterly unforgiving. Her nails look dyed-to-match that dress. Even the lips, which are a slightly different shade (a tad cooler), have a fiery red undertone that matches the dress exactly.

Impressive. This is stunning WERQ indeed.

  • decormaven

Stunner of a dress, and she is WERQing it for sure.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

    Lovely, just lovely.

  • bertkeeter

The absolute BEST red carpet dress in YEARS!

  • Spectacular!

  • ooooohhhhhhhhhhh. how wonderful.

  • She looks AMAZING. Everything is good, but I think it’s the hair and makeup that make it truly incredible. She’s always gorgeous, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen her look so completely beautiful and glamorous.

  • Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. She knocked it out of the park.

  • ellenber

The thing I love most about this post is TLo’s perfect use of the word “Psych.”

  • pookiesmom

She looks amazing, but does she have a tattoo or something in between her boobs? Or is that a bra-let? Or am I seeing things? (I swear it looks like JESUS!) It’s driving me a little nuts, though. What is it???

Also, I could’ve done with less nipple, but the overall effect is stunning.

    • carolclark12

I’m not sure of the design but, yes, she has an under-boob tattoo.  Apparently, she got in in honor/memory of her grandmother.  Grandmother, right?   It’s what all grandmothers wants.

      • pookiesmom

Seriously??? Nothing says “honor your dead grandmother” like underboob wings, I guess. ANGELBOOBS!

    • pop_top

It’s something with wings that expand under her breasts.

  • I wish her taste in men was this good.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Can we “like” a post about a million times?

  • lehen

i mean, i can see her nipple piercing.  that’s pretty slutty if you ask me.  that said, she looks smokin’.

  • Trisha26

I spent the entire night hating her fake hair.

    • YayaGurl

agreed. the way it lays on her forehead makes her look like an alien.

  • Jennifer Coleman

    Almost painfully perfect.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

I almost always hate what she wears, but this is gorgeous.  For the first time ever – brava!

  • kathrineb

I am not usually a fan of hers but I am bowing down over this look. Stunning!

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Gorgeous color, the dress is elegant and glamorous, well done Grrl.

  • Linderella

If only her taste in men was this exquisite.

  • quiltrx

I love it all, especially the gown…except the hair giving her horrible Pam Oliver forehead.

  • kikisayshi

    Great article, guys!

  • Carly Warnock

She owned the night. So glad Tlo agreed with this and gave her props 🙂 She is strikingly beautiful.

  • So much WERQ. This is quite possibly the best I’ve ever seen her look. She looks amazing!

  • Louise Bryan

In the second picture, she looks eerily like a Barbie doll, just painted.  I didn’t see the show, and I’m sure she looked gorgeous on TV, but somehow that picture creeps me out.

  • ZnSD

too bad she has such shitty taste in men

  • Frank Lithium

So… toned down, who the hell is this woman?

  • RzYoung

Really? I think the dress is wonderful but that hair ain’t doing her fivehead any favours if you ask me!

  • I just saw Battleship on Saturday. Nothing she can do or wear right now can make me forgive her for that.

  • Kristy Evans

She really does look like a Barbie doll. I would kill Chris Brown for her skin. Flawless.

  • She looks stunning. Too bad she was hanging all over a slimeball all night.

  • Sara LaBatt

Nice work in People Style Watch!  I love how they said they look forward to reading your blog.  Must be nice to be famous boys, drink it up and soon we’ll see you two on other peoples’ style blogs!

  • flawless!

  • Even with matchy nails AND lipstick?  And that hair looks like an ill-fitted wig.  The dress looks great on her but what about the details you always like to judge?

  • She has lost weight and it suits her. Gorgeous  Make up. I wish she had her original hair color though. This is the best she’s ever looked.

  • ccm800

  • Alyssa

What a gorgeous look on her! Total WERQ, for sure. Also, how sad is it that I’m just now seeing any of the dresses from the Grammys?! Stinking work!
