Vanessa Hudgens in Naeem Khan

Posted on February 20, 2013

Oh, honey. This has to stop.

Vanessa Hudgens attends the premiere of ‘Spring Breakers’ in Germany in a Naeem Khan bordeaux floral print sequin embroidered one-sleeve gown paired with Christian Louboutin sandals and Amrapali earrings.

Naeem Khan Spring 2011 Collection/Model: So Young

Christian Louboutin ‘Lady Max’ Sandal

Vanessa? Remember when we met you? At the Naeem Khan show during NYFW? And by “met you,” we mean “took a picture of you with an iPhone?” No? Well, we do. And we remember what we said when we saw you: “Wow. She is really tiny.” And you are. The fact is, dear, that you really might want to stay away from big, dramatic dresses. They overwhelm you completely. And if you insist on being stubborn about it and you do go out in a big, dramatic dress, then you should keep the accessories simple, which means no spiked sandals and no giant stone earrings. Sweetie, this is all too much. Lop off a sleeve, put away those earrings, and switch the shoes out for something a little less showy, and this might all work for you. But right now? It’s all way too much, hon.

Also, your hair looks really weird.

That’s what my hair looks like right now, and I’ve been working all day and hastily put it up an hour ago.

I really like this dress (if you made the sleeve a regular t-shirt sleeve, or longer and thinner, anything but how it is) but this look is wayyyy too much for her. Imagine it on an actress like Kate Winslet or Cameron Diaz even! THAT I’d pay to see.

  • Rand Ortega

    Ugh. None of it.

    • Louise Bryan

I’m with you.  I had to squeeze my eyes shut.  Not her shoes, not her dress, not her makeup, not her hair.

  • Squarah

I weirdly really like it. It made me smile and she’s clearly loving it. The hair is NAGL though.

    • teensmom99

not in total agreement but your comment made me smile.

    • Delaney Davis

Same reaction! After seeing Michelle Williams’ carefully-constructed self with pursed lips and all, seeing somebody having fun is really working for me.

  • DeborahJozayt

Miss Chiquita, First Lady of Fruit.

  • kmk05

I get an Emma Watson vibe hair… I think it is the parting that is reminding me of her, but Vanessa Hudgens is failing very badly at it. Porobably because it’s too long?

I don’t know how she manages to make this entire outfit look frumpy. I can’t decide if it’s the makeup/hair/shoes combo or if the dress is just a bad dress for her.

    • MilaXX

She always goes for these big dresses and by the time they get to her they are wrinkled and frumpy looking. Everything overwhelms her tiny frame. She  needs to find someone willing to tailor to her size, and go smaller.

      • kmk05

You’re definitely right: I actually had to comment again below, because I didn’t realise that if you look at her feet, there are dress puddles there! It’s waaaaaaay too long. Probably means it’s too big for her everywhere and they tried to pin it ‘strategically’.

  • Janet B

She looks happier in this dress than in the pink and black Rafael Cennamo.

  • pakapaka

“a Naeem Khan bordeaux floral print sequin embroidered one-sleeve gown”
if it takes that many words to describe a dress, it’s too complicated.

    • NC_Meg

And I don’t think that anything should ever be floral print AND sequined AND embroidered.

  • Funkykatt

Eh, how is she keeping her eyes open with all that liner weighing them down?

  • deathandthestrawberry

Wow. They are really doing the full court press for this Spring Breakers movie. I saw the trailer a month ago and it looked terrible. Like straight-to-DVD terrible. A European press tour with designer full-length gowns for trashy movie that features James Franco in cornrows. I don’t get it.

    Anyway, I love the dress.

    • Cat

I watched the trailer only because part of it was filmed at my college (New College, down in Sarasota) and I was SHOCKED that it is coming out in theaters. It looks unbelievably awful. I also agree with you about the dress. Fun!

      • newtonGOTbeaned

I’ll have to tell my roommate about the Spring Breakers-New College connection. I’d never heard of New College until I met him, but it sounds like a really awesome place. Sadly, Spring Breakers looks like it won’t even be so-bad-it’s-good.

    • filmcricket

It’s cuz the guy who directed it wrote “Kids.” Still carries some cachet, apparently.

  • kmk05

Wait a minute, is the dress *rolling* on the floor? It seems to be curling up at her feet in the first photograph. Did she not have it hemmed?? It looks like she’s playing dress up! And has gotten into her mother’s makeup!

    No. Oh my god, no.

    • kimmeister

Its overlong length appears to be why she needs to hold it open just to be able to walk.

  • I think the dress is fantastic – it’s her tiny weird little self and bad styling (especially those earrings) that is the problem.  Normally anything she puts on I have an immediate prejudice towards due to her history of fashion disasters, but this dress is incredible and really does it for me.  Different, dramatic.  Give it to me NOW! I would work the SHIT out of that!

  • lehen

“bordeaux floral print sequin embroidered one-sleeve gown” – probably gonna be too much every time

    • Call me Bee

Hehe.  Kinda the same as a double vanilla decaf non-fat iced latte.  There should be a three adjective limit on dresses and coffee.

  • Judy_J

I am so over the one-shoulder gown, and that goes double for one-shouldered gowns with a long sleeve.

  • formerlyAnon

    She’s got great quads, too.

  • teensmom99

I actually love the earrings–she could wear them with something simple.  And I think the dress only gets truly horrible from the waist down.  Maybe it could have worked as a sleeveless mini. She is beautiful but having a rough transition to being a grown-up star.

  • schadenfreudelicious

i had to do a double take at the model’s name, at first i thought it was a general observation….

    • charlotte

Amazing! I didn’t even see that. Laughing so hard now.

  • Trisha26

The rose is creeping me out…is she on The Bachelor?

  • Zippypie

Axe the sleeve and make it cocktail length and I think she could make it work.  In this rendition, honey, no.  She looks like she’s wrapped in a reject impressionist painting.

  • Call me Bee

This look reminds me of the “best” days of the 80s, when we wore earrings the size of dinner plates and they matched the color of our dresses and blouses perfectly, be they mauve, teal, dusty purple or a print incorporating all three, as this dress does.  Ugh.
    And the slit is troublesome.

  • Anne At Large

Pssh. Wrap it up and ship it to La Saldana. Then fire your stylist. Or get one.

  • Natalie Bryan

Crap. I love it. OH NO WHAT IS HAPPENING TO ME.

Okay, I hate the shoes. And the jewelry. *phew* feel a bit better now.

  • Introspective

She may be having fun with the dress but the effect is still a shitty untailored overwhelming mess. Thats enough playing around with designer clothes without professional help.

Trot along now and spend some of that Disney cash on a stylist. Like yesterday hon.

  • Tatiana Luján

I think she looks great and I like everything but the hair, that looks sloppy.

  • alyce1213

Boy, is that an ugly dress.  And there’s so much of it.

  • MilaXX

On a positive note, I like her face. Are we’re only going to see  her and Selena during this pole dance?

    • BrooklynBomber

      Agree; that lipstick is great.

  • Susan Crawford

Another teeny little person in desperate need of a little make-over. She goes for the boho look, which is fine and fun and age-appropriate for casual times, but I’d like to see her in the hands of a style team who could help her transition to a well-proportioned, more adult look. This is way too much print and way too much dress for her tiny frame. The earrings are pretty awesome, but too big for her. The shoes, however, belong in my closet. And if this fantasy style team could include a makeup person who can let Miss Hudgens’ own pretty little face show through the spackle, that would be lovely. (I would love to see her in a simple, sophisticated Calvin Klein number, or a classic look by Celine.) (And the boho will still work for those Coachella moments.)

  • Mazenderan

The colours suit her complexion and hair, but agree that the shape is overwhelming.  Those colours in a really simply cut knee-length dress would be lovely on her.  No accessories, though.

    Her hair is a disaster.

    • Lizzyisi

That’s what I thought. Those colors look so beautiful on her, I barely noticed the rest of it.

  • imperfectlaura

    Nicole Richie wannabe.

  • filmcricket

This is so many miles ahead of the previous look that I have to applaud it. I agree with all of TLo’s criticisms, but given what a disaster she so often is I’m putting this in the ‘win’ column.

  • Annabelle Archer

She’s young, she’s hot. How does she always get it so so wrong?

  • TerryMH

I may be in the minority here but I got a 70s Bianca Jagger vibe from her. I like the makeup and with a few tweaks on everything else (dress, accessories, hair) this has potential for me.

  • butterflysunita

Beautiful dress, but not easy to wear, and she so can’t carry it off.  Also, her shoes look violent.

  • nannypoo

And don’t forget her makeup. That’s bad too.

  • kimmeister

I’ll bet she destroyed the inside of that hem with her ankle spikes!

I like the eye makeup, I like the lip color, but combining the two is too much.

    • l_c_ann

That spike damage might explain why she is holding the dress away from her thighs.  That way of holding a slit skirt would be a really terrible habit to get into.

  • H2olovngrl

I like the earrings, but I really have a ‘mom’ reaction to all that heavy make up. I want to tell her to march upstairs and scrub that off right now, young lady!

  • greymain

    whaaaaaaaat  ?????no no no

  • Airkisses

She looks like Serena ChaCha :/

  • I give up with this one.

  • The earrings are overkill but i love the shoes.

  • barbarienne

Yeah, my first reaction was, “That dress is wearing her.” And my second reaction was, “Really? Those earrings with that dress? What was your stylist thinking!” It creates the illusion that the dress is trying to climb up her head and take her over like some alien parasite.

And while those shoes aren’t right for this dress, I LOVE THOSE SHOES. Even without the spikes I would love them, but the spikes are bonus. Like gravy. Mmmm, spike gravy.

  • Timothy Scott

Flintsones fashion show. Pebbles struts her stuff. I feel like I’m watching a costume cast off from the live action remakes.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Okay, enough with this chick!  TLo, go give her a talking to – she needs you!

  • carolie_king

I think I could get on board if: that puffy sleeve went away and the top was different (not Wilma’d, either), the earrings didn’t try to match, the shoes didn’t have big, spiky shields on them (although they’re cool shoes, just not here), and the hair was neater.  Nice gams, though, chica.

  • Carrieanno

    Love the runway model’s name.

  • lizajane1776

So much of this that I can’t like, but the color and make up is SO much better than the other day that I just can’t hate it. Although another centimeter or so on the last picture and it might have crossed that line.

  • jw_ny

Dress is fun and I love how colorful it is, but that doesn’t mean to match your makeup to it and it’s vibrant intensity! Way too severe…as well is the hair.  Those earrings…don’t get me started Helen Roper…

  • quiltrx

    I smell an identity crisis.

  • PeaceBang

She’s so cute and she thinks she looks so great and I love her for that but sweetheart, come here. Let’s put that dress away for a big girl who can handle it, and let’s put those shoes away before you get hurt.

  • ankali

Or alternatively, put on a really simple monochrome shift and keep the earrings. Those are awesome.

  • Jecca2244

I wonder if she has a hard time getting clothing lent to her because she is generally in pretty awful movies. Nothing ever looks like it fits.

  • tallgirl1204

Because I have no perspective regarding her actual size, and because the colors are gorgeous on her, I kind of love this. But I defer to you on all the rest.

  • Maybe I’m just delirious from sleep deprivation, but I really love everything about this look except that the hair is too undone. The colors are amazing, the shoes are badass, and the earrings are gorgeous.

  •  Wow, that is SO not the same look as the model.  Too much girl, wayyyy too much.

  • FridaStaire

    But your makeup looks fab!

  • demidaemon

I’m sorry, but this is pure drag queen who gets kicked off RPDR on the first week. She needs to follow the mantra, “Keep it simple, stupid!”

  • shawnhunter

i love the dress on her (i think the fact that it’s pretty sleek/not too much volume makes it work for me) and i think the shoes are killer, but man those earrings and that hair i cannot get on board with.

  • Just me or is she giving off a Catherine Zeta-Jones vibe here??

  • Anniebet

So, in the last pic is she holding her skirt back so we can get a peek?

Honestly – hooker earrings, makeup & shoes, Aunt Martha hair, and Uma Thurman dress? And a frickin ROSE?

No one under 5’10” should attempt that dress. Hell, even the model should have taken a bathroom break when the dress was assigned to her.

    • mhleta

Those shoes had to be catching on the dress every time she moved, which probably necessitated the skirt holding. But a lady should never have to resort to such things. Who advised this atrocity?

  • Dagney

It’s all a bit….”I got to play in my crazy Aunt’s closet.”

  • I’m actually loving this. I think she looks gorgeous and grown up. Wow, I can’t believe I said that.

  • mhleta

You’re being too nice. This dress is empirically ugly. The accessorizing and makeup are inexcusable.Drive a stake through its gaudy heart and let’s never discuss it again.

  • lobsterlen

I don’t know … I bet that gown is something in person. The sequin and bead work is incredible. However it was weigh more than her.

  • I actually like the dress on her, but better hair and different shoes and earrings.

  • newtonGOTbeaned

I really like this. It’s definitely too much, but I’m a too much kind of girl. Her hair is totally weird, though.

  • I think she looks really cute and sparkly.  AND she has amazing legs!!

  • Well I like it. She has done much, much worse. This is downright tasteful for Miss Vanessa. I mean, the shoes are too much (for this look), and the hair is WTF?? But everything else is working for me.

  • alinana

Once again, a dress with a slit so high we get to see what underware she is wearing…or not. Ick

  • Imasewsure

Head to toe awful… digging the hair on the model though…

  • MoHub

Please! No more thigh-high slits on any skirts on anyone!

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    Technicolor Sequined Vomit.

  • She looks like a snake.

  • Jennifer Coleman

Actually, I don’t hate it – she doesn’t looks as stoned as usual. But she should’ve ditched all her accessories – even the rose – re-configured the hair and let the dress & makeup do all of the lifting.

  • alwaysanswerb

Honestly, a little less length and I’d love this. But I’m really gauche, so.

  • lrhg

I like it (minus the hair).

    Also, holy leg muscles, Batman!

  • Candigirl1968

Give this dress to Solange Knowles.

  • Vanessa Hudgens as Manila Luzon as Imelda Marcos: “DESIGNER CHOOS!”

  • kathrineb

I can’t even find the words to express why I hate it, but it’s downright horrid.

  • Dan_In_NYC

She could be the heir-apparent to the JLo drag queen throne if she keeps this up.

  • guest2visits

I don’t normally say this – but this needs to be a super short dress, especially for Vanessa. It’s so busy.
Even the earrings may be too much cha-cha.  But she can keep the sandals.

  • Orange Girl

I hope the Oscars will put an end to the daily Vanessa Hudgens posts.  She always looks like a kid playing dress-up.

  • libraangel

  • Every piece here is pretty damn fabulous, but put together?

She looks like a (very fancy) canasta playing grandmother on a Florida cruise.
