Taylor Swift in Elie Saab at BRIT Awards

Posted on February 21, 2013

Our early morning cat-heavy editorial meeting has left us with the distinct impression that we’re cranky bitches because we picked a bunch of looks we don’t like and now we’re going to spend the day ragging on poor celebrities, who will no doubt be reduced to tears by our hissing.

But we figured we’d start off on a light, positive note. Tay-Tay is usually chief among the celebrities who make T Lo hiss, but she either bumped her head or she’s been listening to us, because lately, she’s dressing like a grownup.

Taylor Swift attends the BRIT Awards 2013 in an Elie Saab black gown accessorized with Giuseppe Zanotti sandals and Neil Lane jewelry.

We don’t really like the sheer panels in the skirt, but otherwise, we’re digging it all. It’s sexy, sophisticated and adult without revealing too much or looking desperate. LOVE the shoes and belt. Attagirl, Tay.

Now let’s go make some stars feel bad!

She’s never going to go away, is she?

    • Nicholas

Even if she does, she’ll write a top-selling album about it.

    • Kayceed

      Never, ever, ever, like, ever!

    • MilaXX

nope, after the apocalypse it’s gonna be her, Beyonce and the cockroaches. Mere mortals won’t stand a chance.

      • NC_Meg

Now I’m imagining a post-apocalyptic world where Bey and Taylor are forced to work together to survive but Bey is having none of her shit. And cockroaches everywhere.

        • Introspective

id pay good money to see that in theaters.

          • “I am legend!” “No, *I* am legend!” “I AM LEGEND, BITCH!”

          • Prudentia

Then Grace Jones  drops by in her space ship and zaps these wanna-be no counts: “No, puny earthlings, I AM LEGEND.”

      • Wendi126

As long as the Kardashians don’t make it

        • MoHub

            But they ARE the cockroaches!

          • Wendi126

            Cockroaches everywhere are offended

          • calimon

I just liked each one these comments as I scrolled down. Ha! Great thread!

          • Agreed!!!

      • How I heart this comment.

  • She looks fantastic. Best use of sheer panels I’ve seen in ages.

    • Yes, I think this might be the first time I have ever liked a dress because of the sheer parts. They are just sexy enough without being vulgar.

      • littlemac8

But what happens when she walks?  I’m not sure it’s attractive she moves.

    • aeb1986

Agreed! I think she looks fabulous, and I am desperate for those shoes. I love that you can just barely make out the details of the shoe under the panels but still know they are amazing.

    • RebeccaKW

Yes, I actually like something she has on, and it has sheer panels.  Maybe I hit my head.

  • RzYoung

I WISH there were cats in all my meetings at work, I’m so jealous.

Taylor’s looking ok, can’t complain. Her hair colour bewilders me though, what do you call that?

    • Me too! At least, I have a cat helping me with my makeup every morning.

      • hmariec19

Me too! They like to bat at my eye shadow brush if they think I’m putting too much on.

    • Julie Parr

      Hair = champagne.

    • BuffaloBarbara

Cats would definitely make work meetings better, though mine insists on typing for me sometimes at home, and she really needs to take lessons.

    • jw_ny

looks like silvery gray highlights to me…and why she’d want that, idk.

    •  There was a girl in college, lo those many years ago, who overdid it on the frosted streaking and promptly earned the name Frosted Flakes. To this day, I have to try hard to remember her real name.

  • She looks gorgeous, but I wish Rooney Mara would have worn this dress first, it has her name written all over.

Still, can’t find anything wrong to this look.

    • greyhoundgirl

Yes–good call!  And I was thinking it would look great on someone curvy, too.

  • Ian E. Johnson

  • teensmom99

sheer panels in the skirt destroy this look.

  • Unlike the use of sheer by Ralph Rucci that we saw yesterday, this is so clearly present as a visual tease, that it doesn’t work. It looks contrived, which it is.

  • NamaSaya8

I have a question for you both. It seems like in the case of miss Taylor here you all are equating sexiness with adulthood. There is, of course, nothing wrong with flaunting what you’ve got and dressing sexy, but I also don’t like the idea that female stars have to become sex symbols to be viewed as adults. Other than predictability, what was wrong with the way she dressed before?

    •  Please see every other post about Taylor Swift for our thoughts on how she dressed before.

      • NamaSaya8

Oh I read them. I love your blog and have been following you all for a couple of years. I agree that her change in wardrobe is long overdue, but I still don’t think that dressing sexy automatically makes someone more adult. Dressing sophisticated, yes, but sexy, not always.

        •  Well, we never said dressing sexy automatically makes someone more adult.

        • lehen

“sexy, sophisticated, and adult” – three distinct adjectives.  I think the sexiness is in the shape (and, i suppose the sheer even though it would still be sexy without it).  The “adult,” for taylor, is because she ditched the white, twee, ruffles and collars (i think).  I think she looks great.

          • NamaSaya8

That makes sense. I agree, and she does look great.

    • I think it was more along the lines of…if you’re going to date everyone in Hollywood maybe you shouldn’t dress like you’re 16 and innocent. It was more about the facade of the clothing, than the clothing itself.

  • mhleta

It’s so cool seeing her embrace her grown up beauty. She’s really turned it around lately. Gorgeous.

  • Can we have a post about the cats?

    • greyhoundgirl

      With photos, please?

    • MilaXX

Although I fear the post would quickly turn into cat corner,I’d love a cat post.

    • EditKitten

I would cry with happiness if there were a TLo cat post.

  • afabulous50

She’ll never win with you bitter kittens will she?  She’s like Lea Michelle…a target…

  • imperfectlaura

I really like her posing with this dress. It’s hard to look at this and not think “Fierce.”

  • hac51

Thank God she ditched the shark makeup.

  • I can dig it. She’s still annoying, though.

  • Annabelle Archer

    Pretty is as pretty does.

I adore her make-up here. The dress is a little boring, but that’s certainly not a crime.  I agree, she’s clearly been trying to move into a more adult look and that’s really all we’ve been asking for. Well, that and a little color.

  • greyhoundgirl

Question for the people who know about the technical side of fashion.  Why does the dress on the model have that beautiful bell shape on the bottom?  Is it about the cut of the cloth?  Or is it something that only lasts for a runway show but kind of sinks in real life?

    • DinaSews

If I had to guess, I would say that the runway version has horsehair braid in it which forces out the hem somewhat without being stiff.  The version that Taylor has on does not appear to have it.

    • Qitkat

Even though I know nothing about the technical side of fashion, my best guess is that an atelier assistant has arranged the gown in that lovely bell swirl immediately after the dress has been carefully pressed, possibly starched and then donned by the model, who is posing before walking the runway, with perhaps some underskirt support prop placed just for the photograph. It does appear that the skirt portion as worn by Taylor is a very soft drapey fabric which would not hold such a shape on its own. And maybe you already thought of this yourself 😉 Perhaps it’s akin to the way food in photographs always looks so unnaturally perfect, because it is usually inedible due to the use of non-food products to assist the longevity and lusciousness for the photo session.

    • greyhoundgirl

Thanks for the explanations–the smoke and mirrors part is always interesting to me.

  • Carly Warnock

    • 3boysful

I  thought I was the only one thinking this.

  • filmcricket

This looks like an ill-fitting mess to me – the sheer stuff around her arms is all wrinkled (as are the panels in the skirt, but that may just be due to wind) and the bodice appears to be gaping weirdly around her ribcage. Also her hair is looking increasingly wig-like. However, the shoes are fierce as hell and her make-up is great. Props also for the mani/pedi with actual colour in it.

  • Mismarker

Begrudgingly admitting she looks good here.  Still dislike her with the red hot intensity of a thousand suns.  Now I know why one of my New Years resolutions was to be “more positive”.

  • formerlyAnon

I endorse the opinions expressed by the gentlemen from Philadelphia.

    • 3boysful

I want to like this 100 times!

  • gabbilevy

… I still hate her hair.

  • It’s not groundbreaking or anything. It just a basic black dress with some sheer parts. Am I the only one who hope all these excitements over Taylor showing some skins will be over soon? Like, okay, we all get it, she’s all grown-up, yadda yadda yadda… This girl is what, 22?

    • I think the excitement here at TLo Inc. is less that she shows skin and more that she stop wearing variations on first communion dresses.

  • MilaXX

I’m glad to see her dressing like a grownup, but this is not her dress. She needs to send this to Kelly Rowland or Rhianna. Tay lacks the ‘tude needed to work this dress.

    • NC_Meg

YES, Kelly Rowland! She would look smokin in this.

  • I don’t like it. It’s too big on her, the panels are unnecessary and her posing is the worst. But I think her hair, makeup and shoes are very pretty.

  • Judy_J

    Cover Girl ad.

  • PastryGoddess

Tay looks fine.  But I’m more excited about the fact that we get to sharpen our claws on the upcoming celebrities.

Does that make me a bad person?

    • Annabelle Archer

NO. It makes you a Bitter Kitten. And this is our home, be free to be.

  • bittykitty

I think she looks great, but I keep getting twitchy and distracted by the “hair sticking to my lip gloss” look…

  • Still wish she’d rethink the bangs and that coy facial expression she always makes on camera…

  • KC

She looks great! I’m not sure why people hate her so much, but I personally think her music is cute and she seems nice enough. Maybe I haven’t watched enough interviews, but I don’t really understand the hate. She’s not gross like a lot of other starlets. And I don’t know that she’s some kind of maneater just because she dates a lot. I mean…I guess I’m confused about it. Is she supposed to marry a guy who may not be right so people will stop commenting on how she dates SO much? And sure she dresses a bit twee sometimes, but she ALWAYS looks put together and pretty.

    • Its the irrational celebrity hate for most of us, I believe. On paper, she is very likable, but in execution she can be annoying-like her ‘surprised’ face when she was winning awards.

    • 3boysful

While I don’t listen to her, I’d add that a music-savvy friend grudgingly took his teen daughter to one of her concerts, and was surprised at what a great show she gives.

      • formerlyAnon

I’ve found that that is almost a certainty with these musically dubious – or at least over-packaged – young mega stars. They work hard on stage (and their management procures for them the right choreographers, writers, lighting designers, costume designers, set designers and artistic/musical directors, back up musicians, singers and/or dancers – IOW the whole package) and they reach their audience very effectively.

    • DinaSews

My irrational dislike is how fake she is.  She acts all innocent and holier-than-thou then slams an ex-boyfriend on National television while singing at the Grammy’s.  Her ‘who? little ol’ me’ act is old and obviously not very genuine.

    • DeborahJozayt

I think Bill Hicks said it best:

“Because you know if you play New Kids on the Block albums backwards they sound better. “Oh come on, Bill, they’re the New Kids, don’t pick on them, they’re so good and they’re so clean cut and they’re such a good image for the children.” Fuck that! When did mediocrity and banality become a good image for your children? I want my children to listen to people who fucking ROCKED! I don’t care if they died in puddles of their own vomit! I want someone who plays from his fucking HEART!”

  • I like it, but I wish it fit her as well in the bust as it does the model. It looks a skosh too big on her, no?

Otherwise, (I hate to say it), I like it. And GREAT shoes.

  • hmariec19

    Oh those shoes. Covet.

    • kimmeister

They are KILLA.  Too bad you can’t really see them on her, kind of wasted with this particular dress.

  • I SO covet those shoes!!! The dress is ok.

  • snarkalicious

It looks like she brought her own personal wind machine for her hair, but otherwise I have no choice but to golf clap for this ensemble.  Well played, Taylor.

  • Alyssa

Yay, I can’t wait to make the celebs feel bad! It’s going to be a good day here! I don’t care for the sheer panels, but overall I really like this look. So glad she’s not pushing her innocence in our faces anymore!

  • BrooklynBomber

It’s not bad for an Elie Saab (and from the waist up very good). The sheer panels look better on the model, but I think altogether this would be better if the panels were merely contrasting, and not so sheer.

  • I wish I could see how those shoes look on her feet, since they are just gorgeous in their publicity photo.  I agree, Tay has stepped it up a notch.  I wonder if this will cost her the adulation of her tween fans?  (Not that it will matter much; just curious.)

  • I feel like, if this dress were in her usual white, she’d be blue skin and a skull belt away from cosplaying old school Mystique.
Seeing her in black nonetheless makes me feel like I’m looking at her evil twin somewhere.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I think she is her own evil twin.

  • It pains me to say this, but she looks great.

Ugh. Now I need a shot in my coffee.

    • decormaven

Hell, pass the jug. She looks great, HTT. That pronouncement for Tay Tay calls for something more bracing than just a shot.

  • shirab

Why didn’t the model’s boobs get a little support?

  • ojosazules

Aside from the skeletor panels, she looks very elegant and sophisticated.

  • I’m a gay guy but I’m mesmerized by Taylor Swift’s beauty.

  • kittenwithaquip

<—Obviously I'm okay with bangs, but for shit's sake CUT THEM. How can people handle bangs in their eyes? Don't they caught in her eyelashes?

    • Qitkat

I KNOW! I wore bangs most of my life and it drives me buggers when people wear them like this. I always want to hold them down and snip them off. She’s not a shih tzu!

    • But your bangs are Bettie Page bangs, which are always cool!

    • formerlyAnon

Does it need saying that the bangs are calculated for the effect they have on others, not on the wearer?  Many beholders find bangs like that sexy. Ergo, she’s wearing bangs like that.

  • stubbornthoughts

If it didn’t have those damned sheer panels, this would nearly be a WERQ. Those are some kick ass shoes!

    • l_c_ann

      The shoes deserve more visibility.

      • Lilak

What a shame the gown has all that leg action and then gets all coy when it’s time to show off those fabulous shoes!

  • Wow Tay…so sexy. Who woulda thunk it?

  • This is like a super-hero costume to me, which means I like it. Unlike when J-Lo does it, and it turns super-villain.

  • Roosevelt 85

Will Ferrell wrote on Twitter: “Friendly reminder that Adele and Taylor Swift are the same age yet one of them has a child and another is mentally stuck in middle school.”

  • warnerave

    i can’t lie..she looks good here

  • xmixiex

I can’t stand this little trick, but she looks legit fierce here.  she has the structure of a super model when you get her at the right angle.

  • Sara__B

Not a fan of the loincloth look, and the gown looks too long through the bodice for her. Even so, she looks great, and not twee or saccharine at all.

  • They play Twister at the BRIT awards???

    • Sara__B

On the wall, no less. Sorry I missed it!

      • In GOWNS no less!! Oh the fashion-humanity!

  • MzzPants

    Why, it’s almost sultry!

  • Unfortunately, we don’t get to see those kicka** shoes! I think she looks great.

  • Belt and shoes are fierce!!

  • Zippypie

Oh, god, there’s nothing to really criticize here except the friggin’ bangs hanging in her eyes like a 14 year old.  Where’s the fun in that??!

She looks great.  I wish I could see more of the shoes because they are fierce as hell, but I’m saying it.  She looks great.

  • butterflysunita

She looks great here.  Now please, make her go away.

  • Trisha26

Let’s put it this way – the shear panels in the skirt aren’t the only things I dislike.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

I hate approving of her.  But yes, she looks amazing… and more grown up, so maybe she’ll stop pursuing 18 year olds!

  • Frank Lithium

Don’t go hatin’ on me now, but the girl has been dressing like a proper woman and looking fierce lately.

  • Such a good dress! I approve.

  • guest2visits

The dress’s panels look silly and the puffy top isn’t great either, but it looks terrific on Taylor.

  • libraangel

I think this might be worth a WERQ, don’t you?

  • lilazander

She is DROWNING in this dress.

  • ccm800
