Solange Knowles on David Letterman

Posted on February 27, 2013

“Adorable” is not a word that springs first to our minds when we think of Solange. But damn, if this isn’t all kinds of ridiculous adorableness:

Solange Knowles makes an appearance on the ‘Late Show with David Letterman’ in New York City in a polka dot ensemble paired with Elizabeth and James pumps.

Elizabeth and James Saucy Ankle Cuff Pump

She is serving up “Good Ship Lollipop” realness and loving it.

We love everything here but the tiny strip of belly skin. If not for that, we might’ve given this a WERQ, although sometimes we think we overWERQ Sol a bit. We’re not prudes about belly skin; it’s just that we don’t think it’s quite right for the feel she’s going for (not to mention it’s February in NYC) and because we think it indicates that the top/jacket is just a bit too small on her. She doesn’t look like she can raise her arms an inch without that thing riding up.

  • Wow those are great shoes.

  • And Lordamercy, that fabulous HAIR of hers.

    • Vlasta Bubinka

Is it me or does she totally look like she’s fusing Hair and Heidi into a delicious campy flick???

    • I know it must be a lot of work but I WANT THAT HAIR.

      • Chloe Mims

And you can have it. She’s wearing weave in this picture.

        • MissAnnieRN

I was going to pose a question about her hair.  It wasn’t looking 100% real to me.  I love her with an afro, but I feel like it’s gotten kind of out of hand lately.  Too long and too much volume.

    •  i generally love her hair, but it has never looked *this* good!

      • Of course its possible its a wig, if so, its the most slammin’ wig ever.

        • have learnt to never ever question a black womans hair, and just put on the “whatever, its fabulous!”-glasses.

  • RebeccaKW

I do really like it, but I really don’t like those shoes.

  • Nariya

You know, I kind of like the belly skin. It stops it from going too precious, with the tap-dance shoes and tee-hee expression.

  • Sobaika

The aforementioned belly skin and collar/shoulder situation aren’t working. It makes her look hunched over or like she has no neck.

    • teensmom99

No neck but the best hair ever.

      • teensmom99

actually this is making me think of the old Steve Martin routine:  “I like a girl with a head on her shoulders. That’s right–no neck. And when we go places, people turn and stare.  But not her, because she has no neck.”  It’s unfair to think of this because Solange looks so beautiful even with the strange fit but I had to share.

    • I would like it so much better if it were one piece, or if the top were slightly longer/larger.

  • Pics 1 and 3 look like she has no neck. But she looks cute overall.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Not feeling this one at all.  Good ship lollipop does not go with her overall style.  It’s odd.  And I don’t think it’s going to work better for the sitdown later…

    •  I love the look, but I am also concerned about the sitting down!

  • werika

GURRRL, you got more looks in your book than the number of days in a year! You’re gorg. Your hair contains the elixir of life.

  • Stubenville

A little short to be sitting down in a lounge chair on TV, no? Hope she wore nice panties.

    • MilaXX

She was the musical guest so no chair time for her.

  • Raggedy Anne realness. I’m here for it. WERQ!

  • decormaven

I think it all works, even the cut of the jacket. Snaps!

  • charlotte

Michelle Williams and Zooey D disapprove. She’s not even wearing black tights for heaven’s sake.
The lesson we learn here is that “twee” really depends on the person. Solange doesn’t do cutesy-dootsie.

    • So right. On one of the other two this outfit would make me grumble something that includes the phrase “grown woman.”

  • Solange, just gimme your whole wardrobe already.

  • Rand Ortega

Maybe just a smidge cutesy-bootsy? But it is really smart & fun, teaspoon of tummy & all.

  • Sam

Awww I thought her belly skin was a belt 🙁

  • fringebenefit

Yes, I thought the belly strip was a belt, too. What a disappointment. Very wrong for the outfit and the weather. Otherwise, pretty close to perfect.

  • Zippypie

I’m not on board with the outfit – the skirt is too cheerleader short, the belly showing, the jacket definitely seems too small in the shoulders – but my god, this woman has the fiercest mane on the planet!

  • Sorry, but she looks like a big polka dotted rectangle with legs. And fab hair. But still, a rectangle.

  • Nonmercisansfacon

Really cute little outfit. Wish this was a dress instead of a 2 pieces though;  or better, a (trench)coat! I would buy that. Sol is definitly my fave Knowles.

  • Janet B

I am feeling a bit prudish, it’s too small.

    • Laylalola

It is too small. All the dots and and busy-ness of the whole look kind of camouflage her breasts, but once you find them it’s very clear: This is too small for her breasts (maybe it’s even a junior size?), which is why it rides up and the sliver of belly is showing, it’s why she can’t move her arms, it’s why the whole thing is off.

  • Trisha26

It is adorable and she looks great! Fro, vivid lipstick & makeup working perfectly. However – hate the shoes and I hate crop tops/bare midriff in general.

  • Mauricio González del Castillo

But please, get those eyebrows done girl!

  • alyce1213

No, it’s cartoonish Polka Dotty (and I love polka dots).
She must have a nice supply of wigs.  This is a wig, right?  Otherwise, she’s be in the hairdresser’s chair for DAYS.

  • Belle239

I’m not sure why folks are raggin’ on her about her eyebrows.  They look natural and not everyone (epecially us with dark or olive complexions) have the tiny thin eyebrows.  I like them and think she looks beautiful.  I’d love to touch her hair – it just looks so soft.

    • carpediva

“I’d love to touch her hair – it just looks so soft.”

But you won’t right? 🙂 Most sistahs have at least one gross story of strangers (usually white) coming up to touch our hair without permission, like we’re dogs to be petted! “Oh, I love your braids!”  Um bitch, get off me! 😀

      • MilaXX

So true, have you seen the infamous youtube “Can I touch your hair?

        • carpediva

I hadn’t! And am still not sure I have because there are a TON of videos with that title! But I really want to now… 😀

          • MilaXX

It’s funny but true. It’s a compilation by Chescaleigh and a few other loc/beauty bloggers.

          • MilaXX

It’s tittled Loc’d up video collab on youtube.
Sad but true. I’ve been “petted myself”

      • charlotte

I’m a white girl, but I know exactly what you’re going through since I recently went on a trip with a friend who was sporting really long and colorful (pink, blue, white) braids. People seriously treated her as if she was some kind of doll…touching her hair, taking pictures without permission. No respect at all. We must be in about 100 travel scrapbooks now.

        • I used to have waist length hair. It was pretty glorious, too. Thick, wavy, and shiny. Like shampoo commercial hair, except I dyed it purple. I had a lot of people just come up and grab a fistful of hair so they could see if it was real. I’m very much a “no touchy!” kind of person so it seriously sucked. I even once had a little kid climb into my lap in a waiting room, grab a fistful of hair in each hand, and stretch her arms as wide as they would go. I could excuse her behavior cause she was only little, but the adults who touched without permission just plain sucked.

        • MilaXX

When we went to China, my hair was dyed red and I had two strand twist. (Sort of like fake locs). People were literally putting their children up to me and taking pictures, At one point I literally got swarmed by people wanting to touch and “pet” my hair.

      • Belle239

Oh, I would love to but absolutely would not. It would be sorta like going up to a little boy that I don’t know and rubbing the top of his buzz haircut.  I think they are so cute and adorable, too, but hands off is always my policy!  🙂

      • lrhg

Oh yup, white here but with curly red hair. People seem to think that I’m their toy poodle. I’ve kind of gotten over the petting but I hate it when they pull (which happens way more than you would think). That stuffs attached to something!

  • SugarSnap108

Eh, it’s a little to precious, and the skirt’s too short.  But good lord, I worship her hair!

  • Mrs. Beasley!

  • MilaXX

agree on the strip of skin, but I love Solange for marching to the beat of her own drum.

  • marilyn

I may have completely missed the point here, but why is she on Dave’s show?  Usually, he has performers, singers, you know, people who do things that put them in the public eye.  What does she do?  She is Beyonce’s sister, but I do not consider that ‘doing’ anything of public interest. She puts me to mind of a ‘lady who lunches’ in training. No matter, at least she did not get the dumpster shot that other guests get for photo opportunities.

    • Rand Ortega

She’s an accomplished actress (“The Proud Family”, “Johnson Family Vacation”), DJ & singer since age 14 who just released a new CD entitled, “True”. She’s currently on tour promoting it.

    • urbanamish

She ROCKED letterman last night. afterward, he kissed her hand and asked if they could go on tour together with him as her opening act.  this is exactly what she wore on stage, and she looked great, moved great, and KILLED.  respect.

      • MilaXX

Just watched my recording of her this morning. I love this cd more and more. She was really great.

    • MilaXX

She is a singer in her own right, Her new CD is pretty good. She was the musical guest.

  • A little springy for the weather no? but aside from that she is undeniably cuter than most.

  • formerlyAnon

Girl is cute as a bug!

(and only the desire not to annoy my fellow BKs kept that “cute as a bug” lowercase. I really wanted it in all caps.)

  • Imasewsure

LOVE IT… so cute but not too cute (well, almost)

  • libraangel

Can’t agree this time. polka dot dotty and dopey!

  • SewingSiren

OrphanAnnietastic ! In a good way.

  • Carly Warnock

She looks awesome. I love the belly strip here. She looks so fresh and pretty.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    AWESOME shoes.  Dress?  Meh.

    • See, I’m the opposite. I think AWESOME dress, but shoes? Meh. I’m just not a fan of that thick t-strap paired with a pointy toe.

  • PeaceBang

I loved it as a dress but hate it as a two piece suit. Hmmm. But she is adorable. The hair is outrageously fabulous.

  • quiltrx

This is really cute…and those shoes are killer, PERFECT for a sit-down!

  • OMFG, HER HEAD! So beautiful!

  • J. Preposterice

Solange is one of my irrational loves (along with K.Stew & Willow Smith).  I will never NOT adore her, no matter how craycray the look.

    • Sobaika

Willow Smith love is not irrational.

    • MilaXX

I feel the same way about Solange & Willow Smith. KStew, not so much.

  • Amy

    I need those shoes!

  • Her eyebrows are out of control. Godawful. I can’t concentrate on the outfit for looking at them.

  • lrhoff

Wow, you’re idea of adorable is different….this is just wrong.

  • boweryboy

Sadly I think the belly skin is intentional.  Even more sadly she looks like a RuPaul’s Drag race reject.

  • GTrain

    Very cute. Love her!

  • Tatiana Luján

I don’t like the shape of her hair in theese pictures.

  • Allyson Wells

Ha! I thought it was a belt 🙂

  • I just want her friggin hair. Damn that shit is gorgeous.

    • are we sure that’s not a wig?  i know she has fabulous natural hair, but something about those ringlets…

  • Judy_J

Love me some polka dots!  That is an adorable outfit, but I’m with you about the length of the jacket.  I want those shoes!

  • iCouture

I have one question…..why is she everywhere???     What exactly does she do??

    • ashtangajunkie

I think she has a new album coming out…? I’m pretty sure that I read that somewhere. She sings and I think she might be a DJ as well.

    • she’s a fashionista.  isn’t that a profession these days?

  • carolclark12

I thought the strip of belly skin was a belt, and I thought it was a good idea to belt her coat.  Love the pique-looking fabric.

  • BaddestMotherEver

She’s really good at proportion, that architectural balance in dressing.

  • ojosazules

She has the best hair ever.

    • l_c_ann

I look at her hair and I just can’t imagin the hours that go into making it look right.

      • ojosazules

I know! It must take forever.

    • kathrineb

      This is fact.

  • mmc2315

TLo writes:  “although sometimes we think we overWERQ Sol a bit.”

Yes, you’ve got it bad for our girl Solange!

She can work the hell out of elegant higher end fashion pieces, but lately?  Too many trying too hard to be funky and different outfits.  Pink diapers.  That dreadful Esteban Cortazar cut out.   Gah!

  • ThaliaMenninger

When I thought it was a coat, I loved it. When i realized it was separates with that belly strip, not so much. Also, I hate the shoes. Carry on.

  • jackie cohen

The hair negates anything else that could possibly be bad. It is fierce!!

  • With the exception of the little strip of belly showing (at least it’s not intentional), I think this is totally adorable! I might have worn something under the jacket to offset the likelihood of showing belly.

  • peachy

if she were to perform the ‘hallelujah test’, she would fail. miserably. when our girls were quite young, Daddio made them stretch their hands to the heavens (as if saying hallelujah). if belly showed, the shirt went in the goodwill bag and a longer one was required before leaving for school. it was all a big joke to make the girls laugh (as we were pitching out their favorite shirts). sol could have used the hallelujah test with this jacket.

  • fiestyfashionfem

Who is her stylist?  Does anyone know?  Or is she just really that creative and talented?  I just love her looks – even the cracktastic ones.

  • warnerave

i don’t get the hype on this girl..what does she do anyways? lol

  • “the sun’ll come out tomorrow, betcher bottom dollar there’ll be sun……”

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Oh, that is just a total clown look!  If you’re going to rock that kind of a ‘fro (and she DOES rock it, make no mistake), then you need to stick to something sleek.  But that gigantic head of curls with polka dots is just… honey, no.

  • something went wrong with blending here because she looks like she’s got a moustache. Ord does she have one?

  • elemspbee

Oh no. This is NOT adorable at all. So NOT her outfit. Proportions are off. Looks like her body is shrinking into a boxy outfit.yaix.

  • guest2visits

This really is very fun, very pretty; but I only like it when I see it as dress, not 2 pieces.

  • Judih1

Inappropriate for feb in nyc. Too much hair Or shall I say too much weave

  • shelley514

    Too cute for words.
