Oscars WERQ: Naomi Watts in Armani Privé

Posted on February 25, 2013

We loved Miss Charlize and Miss Jessica, but we think we’re going to have to crown this Best Look of the Night:

Naomi Watts attends the 2013 Academy Awards in an Armani Privé gown paired with Neil Lane jewelry.

We also think we might be lonely in that opinion. So be it. This was the most risky, most high-fashion look on any of the nominees. That’s a move and a choice we can only salute, darlings. And it’s a difficult dress to wear, to boot. That neckline could have gone wrong in so many ways. The dress could have looked heavy and armor-like on her. Instead, it looks like it was poured onto her in liquid form. Her makeup is flawless and we’re going to break from T Lo tradition and say that we like the messy hair. It’s more editorial in style – and that’s just what the dress needed. A little fashion-mag sloppiness to keep her from looking like a robot. You WERQ that sci-fi gown, Miss Lady!

    • Jessica Rowe

I totally agree. I LOVE THIS.

    • jack_clementine

beautiful! don’t know if I’d say the best look of the night, but absolutely striking!

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KAFYDPCVNCKHWI57YPQRXEJADE Maria

Agreed.  I will hold mine until I see Stacy Kiebler up close.

        • Celandine1

My three favorites were Stacy, Halle, and Naomi. Might have been a reaction to all the boring noncolors and such that have been out for awhile. These ladies brought the glam and the fierce.

    • blogless

      By far the most interesting.

    • slightlybitterkitten

      AGREED!  110%

    • OrigamiRose

She looked amazing, top to bottom.  Very deserved WERQ.

    • shelley514

Been waiting for this one and totally agree that it’s a WERQ.  Snaps to Naomie!

    • gabbilevy

She looks spectacular, but not everyone at my Oscar party agreed… that neckline is controversial for sure. I think she’s werqing it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1396777506 Christin Pardy-Nosenchuk

totally agree.  I gasped when I saw this dress.

      • Annabelle Archer

A gasp and an Oh My Yes!

      • http://twitter.com/SuzBald Susan Baldwin

        Me too.

    • Annabelle Archer

My favorite of the night, by far!

Unique, perfectly executed details, memorable for all the right reasons.  The list goes on, but it can all be summed up with a WERQ!

    • warnerave

NOOOOH!!  that cut is so distracting! best look IMO is between Stacy Keibler and Chalize Theron

      • 3boysful

Nominee Naomi looks lovely, but I really don’t like the neckline.  Looks like she got into a catfight on the way to the red carpet.

    • petalfrog

Agreed! Perfection. I love her hair.

    • Mismarker

She looked A-MAZING.  You rock that robot shit, Naomi!

    • Imasewsure

      I don’t like it but I do think it’s a WERQ

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

LOVE. IT. One of my favorites of the night, and might actually win my top spot. I thought everything about this look was gorgeous.

    • MaryanneGirl

I think I said “THANK GOD” when she walked out to the carpet. Something completely unique from the sea of bland. (my opinion) Agree. She looks phenomenal.

      • Sobaika

For real. Last night was a very boring night, fashion-wise. IT was good of Naomi to liven things up a bit.

        • Jecca2244

Agreed. The looks on the carpet at the Vanity Fair were more interesting.

    • tessasouthworth

As stunning as she is here, I thought for sure that you guys were going to call Stacy Keibler’s look the Best in Show!

      • margaret meyers

        Stacy Keibler was a WOW!

      • http://completeflake.com/ LaVonne Ellis

If Stacy Keibler’s hair hadn’t been hideous I would agree with you, but Naomi was perfect, tip to toe.

    • Diana Delgado

No, you’re not alone, she was my favorite too!! She knocked it out!

    • http://twitter.com/mayagurantz mayagurantz

      Totally. Owned it.

    • DinaSews

Did I hear someone say that she had a lot of input into the design of this gown?

      • ccinnc

That’s what I heard as well.

      • Alyssa

Yes, I heard she’s been working with them since early January on it…you can tell, it fits wonderfully.

        • http://twitter.com/lois_abigail Lois Cameron

And that, Anne Hathaway, is why you don’t pick your dress 3 hours before the show starts. Seriously, I just canNOT get over how bad Hathaway’s dress was.

          • mshesterp

I know, it kinda makes me mad all over again.  This is the Oscars.  Don’t half ass it, Hathaway!!

    • f_yeah_marie

      I’m in complete agreement.

    • Mb

My favorite dress of the night.  Thanks for showing the back, I did not see that before and I love the dress even more now!

    • Sara__B

Definitely a WERQ, and definitely one of the best of the night. The fit is impeccable, and I’ve never seen her look better.

    • Maluca

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Okay, this is unprecedented. I’m disagreeing twice in one day with you charming gents. This look didn’t work for me at all.  Mostly due to the way the sequins were worked, which to my eye made it look like store bought fabric that had been made up in that style, rather than custom hand work, which is what it is.  And as interesting as that neckline is, something about it just bugs me no end.  Maybe its just a bit to Star trek for me.
And from the bulk of the other posts on this, I will be pretty much on my own.

      • Violina23

I’m not crazy about it either. I found the cutout too weirdly shaped & I hate messy hair. her makeup is stunning though, she’s a gorgeous woman

      • charlotte

You’re not entirely on your own.

      • Rand Ortega

As much as I do love the dress, though I think Halle served up the best Sci Fi hotness going full blown Romulan hotness; the 1st thing I said when I saw it, “Mudd’s Women” on the RC!

        • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

OMG I LOVE YOU BECAUSE YOU REMEMBER “MUDD’S WOMEN!”  OK I will stop yelling now.  <3

      • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

You’re not entirely alone. It’s interesting, from a structural, kind of architectural point of view, but I don’t find it attractive and you’re right about the fabric. I don’t know if it’s too many sequins or if they’re sewn over each other, but it’s giving me a Halloween-store-chain-mail-costume vibe.

      • IMNAngryLiberal

I don’t like the gunmetal grey with her coloring … keeps it from being a werq for me.  I also agree with your comment about the way the sequins are worked – there was a lot of sequined fabric on the RC and this has to be my least favorite (on a purely fabric basis).

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=559324312 Pablo Ulloa

agree, the top is too “ice skating” costume (?)

      • sojourneryouth

I agree.  Maybe if the cutout was placed differently, or if it were smaller, but it doesn’t work for me to have the cup looking like it might flop down any second, and then to have that weird strap over it.   I do appreciate the color very much, but the overall effect is that the dress looks like it’s raising its eyebrow at me in judgement.

    • Kathy_Marlow

I loved this dress SO much.  So interesting and unexpected, LOVE

    • twocee

WERQ indeed.  This was really the only gown I saw last night that made me take notice.

    • Becca Cleary

This is far and away my favorite look of the night. The neckline is gorgeous and the gunmetal sequins are incredible. But where’s the arm candy? I need my daily Liev!

      • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

I second the motion! Liev for All!

(and she looks amazing, full stop.)

      • RebeccaKW

Oh, when they showed them in the audience, after they played her clip for best actress nom.  The adoring gaze he had for her…oh.  He’s so delicious on his own, and then you see that.

    • Imthestein

      Yeah, definitely in agreement

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

Such a WERQ! Favorite look of the night. The color is amazing, the cutouts creative and not trashy, and the jewelry and hair are perfect. Everyone at my party was lusting after Liev, but he did alright for himself!

    • frannyprof

Love it, but not my fave.

    • Yulie29

Love the dress, it’s my favorite look that I’ve seen from this year’s Oscars. But even she can’t rock that messy hair. Still, very justified WERQ.

    • http://twitter.com/rmccarthyjames RMJ

She is just aging beautifully. Not that she didn’t begin with a leg up, cheekbone-wise, but still. Her face is incredible.

      • Annabelle Archer

Beautifully, but more importantly, gracefully.  As in, I see actual movement and (gasp) wrinkles on her face – like a real human woman.  I wish she could talk her bestie into having this perspective of realness adding to their craft.

        • http://twitter.com/rmccarthyjames RMJ

Exactly, thanks for articulating it a little more precisely.

    • Diego!

I agree. She looked stunning! :D

    • http://twitter.com/lisledanielle Danielle Lisle

Absolutely stunning. Liev couldn’t wipe that devoted look off his face for more than three seconds.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

Totally agree. My dress of the night by a long mile.

    • nannypoo

I don’t like the Lonely Left Boob.

    • Zippypie

Can’t jump on this train, boys.  I like the idea of this dress but not how it looks, especially how the waist cuts her in two very unflatteringly.  And I just have an irrational hate for cap sleeves in any form.  And a Wilma cap sleeve…..makes my hackles stand up.  I don’t hate it, but I just can’t give it a WERQ or a best-dressed.

Hair and makeup are also a little too daytime pale.  I’m really not liking this trend toward bland neutral on the face.  I’m not a fan of huge amounts of makeup, but nothing pops – not her eyes, her lips or cheekbones.  The hair is okay.

I am, however, groovin’ on that diamond-encrusted bangle/watch, whatever that is.  That’s pretty fantastic!

    • crash1212

Total WERQ and I agree – best look of the evening. The fit is perfection and everything she did with her face, hair, accessorizing is spot on. Naomi FTW.

    • MissMariRose

Shoulda won best dressed. Shoulda won best actress. Where’s all the love for Naomi?

    • jackie cohen

Wow, I really did not like this neckline. The jewelry, however, is gaw-geous!

    • http://www.what-the-frock.com Dana WhatTheFrock

Agreed. Best look of the night.

    • homofascist

She had the best accessory of the night – her fine ass husband…

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=619406399 Lisa Wagoner

This was my favorite of the evening.  Slim pickings there were, since I thought most of the dresses were not attractive.

    • Rebecca Damsen

Ewwwww was my first thought last night!  The floating booby is distracting, and it looks distressingly uncomfortable.

    • http://twitter.com/1stcomeshealth Jill Ciciarelli

You aren’t alone!  This was by far the best of the night.  GORGEOUS!

    • golden_valley

I can’t agree with that.  I put Jessica first and then Charlize.  Those dresses do not outshine their wearers.  This Naomi dress attracts attention to the dress only.  I remember the dress, but not the person in it.

    • cowper

Ambitious AND stunning. This says, “I’m an actor, not a starlet!”

    • Little_Olive

Oh so agreed. Striking and balanced, if a skosh too tight in her midsection.

Nicole Kidman, take note: this is how you do a full glitter dress and how you age in Hollywood.

    • warnerave

put her side by side with stacey keibler..see who wins!

      • afabulous50

Agree!  I thought Stacey Keibler was fierce!!!

    • charlotte

She looks gorgeous and all, but I can’t make myself like that cutout. You can all hate on me now, but I think it looks like a child tried out kindergarten scissors on the dress.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QP4RBTAZX6QTHZZSJ2YT7DGO7Q Brittany

I never saw the open back on-screen but it’s quite lovely. I liked the dress on her but wasn’t sure about the cutout. I still think it’s a little jarring in photos but ultimately she looks so elegant & gorgeous, it’s definitely a Win.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=559324312 Pablo Ulloa

meh, the top is too “ice skating” costume (?)

      • Yulie29

I’m a skating fan, and I can tell you that the top looks nothing like a skating costume. Yuna Kim at her fiercest could not pull this off, and while Carolina Kostner might try, it would not work on her at all.

    • PrunellaV

Pure Oscar perfection. That dress would look ridiculous on a mere mortal, but on her it works.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=49702581 Susan Bullard Mayer

Sorry, gotta disagree.  All I see is “trying to be edgy pageant dress.”

    • ConnieBV

Not best for me, but she did look amazing and it was interesting. Still, she was a little too stiff in it.

    • moja31

she looked amazing, but this just begged for sleeker hair.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Inês-Martins/100000345906318 Inês Martins

      Love it!

    • Synnamin

Hum. Something about the waist seaming feels “off” to me. Maybe it needs a slender belt of some sort?

    • christinewithanx

I agree; she looks AMAZING. I wish she’d have won.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1208138556 Sara Munoz Munoz

Alone in this? Hell no. Naomi Watts is FLAWLESS and so is this look!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1084733830 Kate Andrews

I love this dress. I love Stacy Keibler’s dress slightly more, but this is in my top 5.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/37TPKASIMXVUPYK5BNQFOL43KU Carina

I totally agree, this was stunning. She always brings it to big events.

    • http://frederickvegetarian.wordpress.com sixgables

Mmm…it looks like punctuation to me.  On the plus side, it’s not flesh colored.

    • elirt

I agree – it’s an incredible and so refreshing from the sea of typical prom and wedding dresses. THIS is fashion at its finest.

    • alaskahyoung

She was definitely my favorite. Couldn’t stop looking at her.

    • StyleWeekRosie

I completely agree! Was on ABC6 this morning discussing our Oscar picks with Jonathan Joseph Peters and this was my Best Dressed. :) xoxo

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

My favorite of night was Stacy Kiebler, but this was close. She is killing it here. Old school Hollywood meets Futurama.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=149100065 Virginia McMurdo

Amazing. It is that greyish blue that looks so stunning on cool blondes. I feel like this is a dress only she or January Jones could have pulled off. Robot realness in the best way. X-men of Oscar dresses.

    • StyleWeekRosie

So great! I was on ABC6 in Providence this morning discussing my picks with Jonathan Joseph Peters and this was my Best Dressed! Love it, she takes the best chances on the red carpet and is never wearing the expected. xoxo

      • mhleta

Oh! You’re Rosana Ortiz Sinel! I agree 100% with everything you said in your report. And JJP is spot on about Amy Adams. It really does look like all the color was sucked out of the world when you see her. (I used to work at 6 when it was in New Bedford 100 years ago.)

    • Gorengirl

J’adore. Best Dressed of the NIght!

    • lrhoff

Sorry, Charlize blew everyone else out of the water.  She made a very good attempt here, though.

    • JasmineAM

I loved Halle Berry’s more than this. This is fierce as shit, though.

    • ComeLetsTalk

I will say I appreciate her taking a chance. So kudos for that. But to call THIS the best look of the night. Sorry boys I have disagree. that chest plate isn’t doing a thing for me.

    • Funkykatt

No way, I LOVED it too

    • alyce1213

It’s stunning from all angles.  The swirly cutout is balanced by the rounded cap sleeve; it maintains design integrity and doesn’t look gimmicky.  (Somebody tell Stella McC this is how you do it.)
I’m not totally in agreement about the hair, it might have been a bit smoother, but this is still a WERQ.

    • kmk05

      …What about Stacy Keibler?

I like this, but I’m not a fan of her posing which makes the dress look very stiff (esp in the last shot). She’s definitely well-dressed, but she’s missing that je-ne-sais-quoi that makes someone ‘best dressed’.

    • mhleta

Top 5 but not top 3. Personal best? Definitely.

    • lalahartma

    • bertkeeter

Fit is super….not loving all thats going on up top…also hair a bit to blah…sorry!

    • jw_ny

Very pretty…best of the night tho?  oh, idk…among the best.  I do like the neckline/bodice very much, but the skirt portion seems stiff and heavy.   I typically like a messy do…this isn’t working for me, and her makeup seems a bit understated.

    • Stubenville

Noooo! That bust line is just way too odd. And I hate the way the blocking of the sequin pattern looks like vertical strips.

    • Virginia Anderson

My favorite of the night – that dress is incredible, and she wears it effortlessly!

    • Mary229

This wasn’t my top look for the night but no doubt it’s stunning and she’s such a pretty woman.   My goodness is she a pretty woman who has aged gracefully and naturally.

    • Trang Nguyen

I read that she worked with Armani for weeks to get fitted correctly. Girl is a pro, and she doesn’t age! Maybe she IS a robot.

    • Monabel

She looks lovely, despite the something horrible about the dress.

    • BuffaloBarbara

I don’t agree on the hair (was it really windy in California last night?), but the dress is to die.

    • up with pod people

Ugh, a rare Full Disagree from my corner. Hated it.

    • http://twitter.com/bbqcancelled bbqcancelled

She looks fantastic, yes – but I HATED the way it looked on her when she was seated.  It was like the bodice was firm and the whole thing looked like it kind of slid up on her.  Standing, FIERCE.  Sitting, notsomuch.

    • tripletmom96

i wasn’t totally crazy about this one…  i do agree with tlo that it was probably the most high fashion & risky with that neckline.  i can’t say i don’t like it, but it’s just not doing all that much for me.  it’s a good dress, but not my favorite by a long shot.

    • MiriamMc75

You’re not alone on this my beloved TLo. Jessica Chastain ran a pretty close second place, but Miss Naomi wins the crown. Stunning.

    • http://www.facebook.com/claudeth.forbin Claudeth Forbin

Sorry have to disagree.  She looks fab.  She is definitely werqing the look.  BUT, there are one or two others that beat her out for best look.  She is definitely one of the top 10.

    • Alyssa

I absolutely agree. Gorgeous dress, fitted to perfection. She looks absolutely stunning. WERQ indeed!

    • Qitkat

She is stunning I agree. But I can’t help but wonder if between the tight fit and the possible weight if she was only too glad to remove it with a gasp of relief at the end of the night.

    • http://twitter.com/hamsteaky Maria Smith

AGREE!! Best of the night for sure and all at my party agreed. Knew it the minute we saw it.

    • Janet B

She’s lacking the attitude for a WERQ.

    • http://twitter.com/BookcaseHat Emily

I LOVE this look. For me, it’s between this and Stacy Keibler.

    • Monday1900

She was number one for me too (despite the hair, which I really disliked).  Gorgeous dress perfectly fitted.  When I’m watching the Oscars this is what I want to see–not a dress that could be seen at any random event.

    • http://twitter.com/wonderdivaEtsy wonderdivaEtsy

Loved this so much.  A good night for Armani Prive — both Naomi and Jessica were wearing it.

    • bookish

It’s my favorite dress, too, mostly because it’s the most memorable.

    • AnnPopovic

    • teensmom99

LOVE.  I think it sort of says: “I know you nominated me because you needed to get to 5 and nobody saw my movie but I am going to look hot in a risky dress.”  And does it have to be said that great tailoring for a perfect fit makes almost anything possible?

    • margaret meyers

We see these one shouldered dresses all the time, and they look off kilter, over-thought, gimicky, unflattering, uncomfortable and have bad angles.  this dress has none of those problems.  She looks sharp and modern.

    • leave_Blake_alone

The odd neckline/boob-thing felt like it was there “just because” – it obviously makes the look attention-getting, but doesn’t do anything for the gown or for her otherwise. I think she adequately handles the dress where many may have faltered, but I don’t see this as a werq. That lip color is PERFECT on her, though.

    • http://www.facebook.com/fiddlecub Kevin VanOrd

I don’t know–when I see here from the front, the cutout looks so much like a Toucan’s beak that I can’t un-see it.

    • ccm800

Is these still photos it indeed looks like armor, but not on screen and it is pretty fab.

    • http://twitter.com/MarfMom Maya

loved it! i believe she designed it too, right?

    • KayEmWhy

Calling Captain Kirk! I hated this look.

    • Leah Vildaver

    • barbarienne

My brain keeps tripping over the negative space at the shoulder, but there’s no question this is a striking look that (a) has many, many potential ways it could go wrong, and (b) very few women could pull off even under the best of circumstances.

This is the sort of dress that either falls hard or goes to werq territory; there can be no in between. She’s rocking it.

    • mightbewrong

Completely agree, I thought this was stunning…I don’t usually like asymmetry that much but it works for me here.

    • filmcricket

Dunno that I’d say it’s my fave – that would probably go to Stacy Kiebler with an honourable mention to Charlize – but it’s definitely in my top 10, maybe even top 5. I give it props for being different, even if I’m not sure I like everything about it.

    • tereliz

You are not alone. This was my absolute favorite of the whole night. The dress is gorgeous, the makeup and styling simple and low-key, the hair up and away from the face… perfect.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I couldn’t agree more. Best actress nominees get first dibs on looking like Hollywood Goddesses, and that’s a goddess dress, no doubt about it.

    • ojosazules

Really striking. I’m you guys on this one.

    • EEKstl

You are not alone, TLo.  I already crowned Jessica and Charlize but I LOVED this and gave her big props for pulling off a Cate Dress. Gorge.

    • mjude

i just saw her sitting in the audience last night & thought wow she looks beautiful.  agree tlo!

    • kschwarting

I like but don’t love the dress.

But you know what I do love?  The fact that she’s an actress in her 40s who can still move her face (photo 5).  When they showed her last night, all I could think was “she’s gorgeous.”

    • http://twitter.com/UberChicADee Diana Giese

    • http://www.facebook.com/suzie.vazquez Suzie Vazquez

i don’t find it that incredible, but she looks lovely and not awkward in it. she’s able to pull it off.

    • GretaChristina

I hated this at first. I thought she looked like a Star Trek (TOS) bimbo, like someone Captain Kirk would seduce and then battle in an arena. But after thinking over the parade of safe, largely tedious dresses in nude or blush pink or off-white, I changed my mind. It wasn’t my favorite look of the night — that’s gotta be Halle Berry — but she took a fashion risk, and while it did look rather sci-fi, ultimately it worked, and I applaud her for it.

    • suzq

It was my favorite dress of the evening…until Michelle Obama came onscreen.  Still, it was edgy.  When interviewed, Naomi said she chose it because it had a “sci-fi” look to it.  It’s a feat of modern engineering.  Snaps to the designers at Armani Privé!

    • Cathy S

It’s okay. Charlize is still tops for me.

    • Lulu Lafurge

I disagree. That asymmetrical bodice looks stamped out by a computer and too rigid.

    • TRSTL

You are not alone, this was my FAVORITE of the night.  Of course, I have a total gay man crush on her so…. but that dress is absolute perfection on her body.   Like it was sprayed or stitched on but not vulgar at all.

      • TRSTL

And i desperately want to see a pic of her and BFF Nicole together from last night.  I thought Nicole looked amazing as well.

This was my absolute favorite of the night as well.  She looked amazing in this nice unusualness.

    • ZnSD

GORGE. I was the only one at the Oscar party I went to who liked it though.

    • Zirza

Loved this. Probably my favourite of the night, though I did like Jennifer Lawrence’s dress as well.

    • MilaXX

I completely agree. I know many called this too Star Trek-y, but the thing that makes it work for me is that it is fitted perfectly. Add to that the right hair/makeup/jewels and this is indeed a WERQ for me.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emily-Smith/12431153 Emily Smith

I would love to know what this thing weighed.

    • emccullough

I think Seven of Nine wore it better.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=603005248 Jeff Warhurst

I fully agree, 100%.   Far and away the best of the night.

    • samo_samo

She looks nice and all, but I’m not really feeling the dress. The asymmetry of is throwing me off. It just doesn’t grab me.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

I must say that this is all working for me. She looks radiant and her accessories are spot on.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_U5LTVYHX32MGMMXR33G7TOXVR4 Magdalena Monzerrat Ontiveros

this is a NO NO, for you!

    • http://www.facebook.com/D.D.D.Dino Dino Bonačić

god no. both charlize and jessica rocked it better. :D

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I was weirdly offended when Seacrest kept asking Liev S. about HIS opinions of what she wore and HIS thoughts and so forth.  Liev just looked like he wanted to punch Seacrest in the mouth and get out of there. Naomi just looked like she wanted to go sit down.

    • http://twitter.com/Merneith Merneith

Striking, but I think it would have worked better with a shorter skirt. The length of the skirt is a little unrelieved. Not a mini-skirt, mind you, just above the knee.

    • maggiemaybe

Couldn’t Jennifer Aniston do that with her hair?

    • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

I pegged her as one of the Best Dressed, too. But, yeah, Charlize was Numero Uno for me.

    • Cynica

You are not alone. Stunning, and by far the best dress of the night.

    • decormaven

I’m not sure if it is my favorite look of the night, but I do applaud her sense of style and ability to carry off a technical garment. Perhaps a stronger earring to balance the geometry going on with the shoulder treatment of the gown would have bolstered my vote.

    • mozzer0906

Agreed, this was jaw dropping and unexpected and she looks fab.  For taking such a risk, she wins the prize.

    • MsBusy

      Fabulous and fascinating!

    • Judy_J

The beading on that dress is breathtaking.  She does look spectacular.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I would tend to agree with the Uncles here.  I think she didn’t play it safe with a confectionery masterpiece, or go the satin route like some others.  This stands out, and is just visually interesting enough without stepping into “what the hell is that?” territory.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=748945231 Joanna Brand

You are not alone.  I completely agree.  She KILLED it.

    • DTLAFamilies

This looked even better in motion. I’m not a Naomi Watts fan but I gasped when I saw her.

    • Lilithcat

It’s not a WERQ. Not with that bedhead.

    • ChaquitaPhilly

When you’re wrong you’re wrong. Both of you.
I, too gasped when I saw her. How could she look that bad! She is so beautiful but when she’s
wrapped in tinfoil with messy hair she is NOT a Winner.

    • tylka5

I agree!  My favorite look of the night!

    • http://twitter.com/SillyGrrlJen Silly Grrl

Not alone. I gasped at this. STUNNING.

    • calimon

That woman is talented and gorgeous – wrinkles and all. She is the woman to wear the dress, and wear it well she does!

    • bringbackbeatles

Definitely my favorite too! It fits like a glove and I agree with the hair being the right choice. She really is stunning!

    • rkdgal

I’m 100% on board with Naomi as best-dressed.

    • hypeman414

I clearly must be missing something.  i thought, for sur,e this was one of the worst looks last night (by someone who actually tried).

    • mary_berry

My reaction when I saw this was “Oh, Fancy Borg.”  I don’t care that anyone takes a risk at the Oscars so I can’t get on the TLo wagon with look of the night.  I was waiting for the eyepiece to pop out of the neckline and for her to become Nocutus and turn Hollywood into mindless drones…only to realize there was nothing there to assimilate because there is no organic material at the Oscars.  So yeah, entertaining to myself but not my eyeballs’ cup of tea, pretty wise.

    • kimmeister

She has the exact shoulders needed to pull off this neckline.

    • Vickiefantastico

You know, you guys actually changed my mind completely. I really didn’t like it, but you made sense. I might not call it the best of the night, but it’s different and relatively pretty.

    • fringebenefit

This dress is just too complicated for its own good–working way too hard.

    • HobbitGirl

I want to love it, but I hate that her left(?) boob looks so out on its own over there.

    • Kristy Evans

      Cyborg CHIC!

    • http://twitter.com/aStudiobytheSea a Studio by the Sea

Definitely one of the best looks of the night.  So many of the others are just dull design wise.

    • BazoDee

I have friends that loved this – I liked it a lot, but I’m not sure it topped my list. It just is slightly off to me. I can’t put my finger on it. Maybe a belt? Maybe the neckline while it works just isn’t flattering?

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/B523B7JFSQQ24HC7RCM7OBSHZQ david

      She’s perfect.

    • ChristinaRi

      She looked fabulous.

Totally robbed of the Oscar.  Her performance was so understated and so real.

    • bluefish

I love to quibble in my mind with TLo just because it’s fun and I would still give it to Charlize but I LOVE you guys for giving it to Naomi because she looked sensational, took a risk for sure, and because I’d love to see her take home the Oscar any day now.  She looks gorgeous in that fabulous dress and gave a terrific performance in a wonderful film.  So thanks for giving her the Tom and Lorenzo award.

    • Nonmercisansfacon

Alien inavasion I tell you! She looked fantastique.

    • http://twitter.com/aidanboleyn Aidan B

Totally agree, my favorite of the night. I was so underwhelmed by last night’s carpet, even though I liked Charlize, Jessica, and Jennifer’s choices. In a sea of bland colors, Naomi lit the place up. And that color really brings out the icy blue of her eyes.

    • peachy

i didn’t like it so much. however, my husband nearly… had one… on the spot when he saw it.

    • BrooklynBomber

I kind of loved it. Maybe not my numero uno, but way up there; I loved the wackiness.  As you say: “the most risky, most high-fashion look on any of the nominees.”

    • http://twitter.com/ToddieDowns ToddieDowns

Hands down my favorite gown of the night.

    • formerlyAnon

I think she deserves the WERQ. Not sure who I’d call “best” for the night since there’s so many different things to be considered – only one reason why tens and hundreds of thousands aren’t reading my opinions about fashion!

    • jetpackdino

I almost love this, but there’s something about the waist that makes me uneasy.  I actually like the neckline, although usually I share Nina Garcia’s “asymmetrical gowns are student work” bias.  Her hair and makeup, totally perfect.  Naomi Watts is one of my favorite actresses, amen and amen.

      • understateddiva

yes!  That line across her waist makes her look short-waisted.  This is something I actually AM, so I notice it. Also that cool silver color kind of makes her skin look paler and almost more translucent.  I love the daring, but I don’t think it quite works with her.

    • anotherkate

You are NOT alone! I named this my favorite look of the evening as well. She is KILLING IT. The hair has some flyaway issues, but I felt like everyone’s hair was static-y last night. (Were there Santa Anas? Those are dry, right?). However, I forgive it because she clearly had her hair DONE, by a professional. Plus that dress is just SO COOL.

    • Candigirl1968

Bringing the A-game to the red carpet.  Definitely a WERQ.

    • Louise Bryan

I’m not loving it.  Wish I had seen her and Nicole Kidman together.  Now Nicole’s dress ….

    • DominoEstella

      LOVE this gown.

    • http://twitter.com/ImekaSF Akemi

I loved this dress. LOVED IT.

    • ashtangajunkie

      Total WERQ. I loved this.

    • http://twitter.com/BigBearSpeaks Big Bear

And afterwards she can chop off the bottom and use it for Stars on the Ice outfit.

She looks lovely. The dress is just silly. Project Runway one day challenge disaster silly.

    • http://press-for-attention.tumblr.com/ Miss Jen K

      Indeed. Hands-down favorite.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/WVTYDX4T7FOCBV4H4REANLN7BQ s k

Serving Lady Robocop realness!  I am a sucker for gunmetal glitter – nails, shoes, dresses, I’ll take it all.

    • jackieb133

      That’s a L’il Kim dress!

    • Corsetmaker

Fabulous. Love the unusual neckline and it fits perfectly. The hair works as contrast.

    • pylgrym

Xenia warrior princess’ lady in waiting

    • RuthGo

this is just gorgeous. She’s worn some really interesting lovely dresses during her award season.

    • 4JJ

The waistline is not smooth on her, and that seems to be happening with a lot of fitted dresses lately. I don’t know if they’re too tight, or if the women  wearing them have more differential between waist and hips than you normally would for a sleek line like this. But it’s dramatic and special and she looks lovely overall.

    • Trisha26

Not my fave look of the night, but 2nd. She looks beautiful.

    • LinXGUA

Fell in love with the look when i saw it last night. Gorgeous.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100004380368415 Kelli Anderson Taylor

It was the only dress of the night that made me *GASP!*

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100004380368415 Kelli Anderson Taylor

      In a good way.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

She blows EVERYONE else out of the water!  Definitely my pick for best dressed of the night!  Gorgeous!

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

This was one of the only dresses that made me gasp when I saw it.
      Flawlessly executed.

(but, damn, those sequins must have given her a helluva rash by the end of the night…)

    • Anniebet

Meh, for me. The dress is unusual and fits okay. Not nuts about the sci fi lady armor look of the top. I kept wondering where her laser pistol was.

The hair ain’t editorial, just messy, don’tcha think? Pale wrinkled skin and a bony back didn’t help either. Sure she’s reached a certain age, but here she looks like she just got off a horse on a farm somewhere and jumped into the dress then the limo and applied her makeup on the way to the Dolby.

    • MissAmynae

My Best-Dressed. Hands Down. Closely followed by Stacey Keibler, Jen Lawrence, Jen Garner, and Robin Roberts.

Can someone tell me what WERQ stands for? I’m new to this site and not quite up to all the lingo yet…. (I think I’ve got the contextual meaning :-)

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/SIW6UBBGHMNFAAOH2KEMRMVMCU beawin

Too many sequins makes for cheesiness.

    • http://twitter.com/jalae Janey

I feel like it’s probably the most unique and stunning dresses of the night but I might be alone in this but I thought the dress wore her rather than she wearing the dress.

With Ms Theron and Ms Chastain, they were seemlessly integrated with their stunning dresses but with Ms Watts, I feel like her look is too soft, too sweet and not strong enough to pull of his kind of dress. I imagine this gown on some other leading ladies and I feel like it would have punctuated the look a lot more.

    • adnama79

The left boob is too plain bra cup shaped for me to like the dress.

    • pookiesmom

Without question the best look of the night. Striking, unusual, flattering, GORGEOUS.

    • kathrineb

Amazing look for her. Fav look I have seen!

    • http://twitter.com/amndad amanda lynn

completely agree.  she’s my best dressed as well.

    • Barbara Potter

Hate, hate, hate the hair. Ruined the look for me as I couldn’t get past it and focus on the dress. :(

    • http://onionjam.tumblr.com SkipperJane

I actually like her messy hair. Maybe because it looks so shiny, and looks artfully arranged. Amy Adams’ hair depressed me because it just looks like she got back from the gym. (A gym, apparently, that likely charges several hundred dollars to mess up your hair.)

    • Therese Bohn

Totally LOVED this — sexy Star Trek!

    • DesertDweller79

Beautiful dress and it looks fabulous on her.  I don’t like the makeup and hair as much as Charlize’s though.  So, she isn’t winning the evening for me.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tim-Wong/507815939 Tim Wong

i tried to like it…but this look like she went into cate blanchetts wardrobe and put it on..copied her look ~heavy eyeliner, soft up do,minimal jewellery with zero personal interpretation what so ever

    • RzYoung

I love that it looks armor like! Was it just me never noticing before or was there LOADS of beading and sequins at the oscars this year? The man-hours represented in these outfits is unreal!

    • KrateBay

“Best Look of the Night.” My thoughts exactly when I saw this. Glad TLo agree and bow down to this shiny fabulousness. It fits her, it suits her (a little King Kong vibe going there) and strangely enough, it looks comfortable to wear – except when she sits.

    • libraangel

Kinda a WERQ for me: I don’t like those vertical stripes running down the gown

    • Toto Maya

It fit perfectly. No titscreprancies. I loved it, but I was the only one in my family who did.

    • pulpytomato

This dress is amazing. Perfect for her – edgy but classy. I’m so glad the sleeve is not long.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VA5XLSF3QRELSC3MUFSXLP4EIE rebecca

My  only complaint, but I actually go back and forth on it, is that the hair may be a TAD messy. But just a tad. However, the rest – fantastic.

    • carolie_king

The skirt looks a little stiff in photos, but I didn’t see it move.  Hate the hair.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/47S737MGWCAZEZ73QOAFKDFEKQ Jill

It’s interesting but I don’t think the color or shape are pretty at all.
