Oscars WERQ: Halle Berry in Versace

Posted on February 25, 2013

Miss Halle is serving up the very best of ’80s nighttime soap opera vixen realness:

Halle Berry attends the 2013 Academy Awards in a Versace gown.

You WERQ the SHIT out of that Dominique Devereux drag, Miss Thing! Two snaps up and a Champagne flute in a fireplace, girl!

      Perfection in every detail.

      • Stubenville

To nit-pick I would have liked sleeker hair and a tiny touch of color – serious ruby drop earrings perhaps?

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I see what you mean, but I think she needs the volume in her hair to balance the width of the shoulder line.
Some big ass earrings with red stones would have been pretty awesome!

          • Vlasta Bubinka

Still, would’ve loved to see the fight in a fountain…

            • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

You KNOW she would kick someone’s ass.

            • VanessaDK

She’s like a cross between Grace Jones and Grace Kelly….

            • leilah

              FanTAStic description!!

        • Little_Olive

Yes to the hair, no to the earrings.

      • BayTampaBay

Halle Berry always looks so great, even if she has a couple of not-so-great choices to her resume, because her clothes fit!

Whomever or whoever does her fittings is the worlds most awesome tailor.

        • poklapy

(FYI: It’s whoever, because it’s the subject; think of it as: would you say “he (i.e.: who) does her…” or “him (i.e.: whom) does her…”?  Whichever is correct is the one you use.)

          • brokephilosopher

that’s how I explain who/whom to my high school students before they take the ACT!!! always works.  for their writing, I tell them just never to use “whom” if they’re not sure because it never sounds bad to use “who” and it is so cringe-inducing when “whom” is used incorrectly.

            • Mistie Holler

I’ve never known anyone whom uses that word incorrectly. It must sound very silly indeed.

            • zbird17

Thanks for the giggle, Mistie.  I needed that!

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PVIY3NBCZJAJNFWDBCWG2DMKL4 Jen R

Re: the world’s most awesome tailor – I don’t know about that. I can see the shoulder pads through the sheer fabric and they aren’t black – they look like uncovered foam shoulder pads you can get at your local JoAnn Fabrics. I don’t think it’d be noticeable on a pale woman, but with Halle’s café au lait coloring, it shows up. If they’d at least been covered with black fabric, it would have been less obvious. I can even see what looks like a thread from a raw fabric edge in the close-up. That’s not up to Oscar standards, imho.

    • BrooklynBomber

I thought she looked amazing. It’s very her, yet without the lapses in taste she sometimes falls prey to. A top pick, as far as I’m concerned.  Seems all the women who dressed up as Oscar did well last night.

      • Jennifer Coleman

Plus, when she walked out onstage, the dress moved in a liquid gold sort of way. Bravo, Halle!

    • Kate Lorenz

YES Werq!  This was my favorite of the night.  I loved Kayne from Project Runway so I know my tastes tend towards exuberant, possibly tacky cliches..and this is the very best kind of exuberant, possibly tacky cliche.  ;D

    • HobbitGirl

The shoulders bother me. I guess they’re necessary for the structural look, but they’re visible and that awful “flesh” tone that literally nobody is. Yick.

      • fallinseattle

Yes, this is what got me as well. As soon as someone pointed out that the shoulder pads were visible, it was ruined for me.

      • http://twitter.com/lisledanielle Danielle Lisle

Now those pads are all I see.

    • StellaZafella

You’ve got to have the body to work that much linear definition… boy, she’s got the body!
And, for once it doesn’t look like midlife desperation…it looks like what it is: “EAT this, bitches!”

    • Sobaika

One of my favorites from the night! Tron realness.

      • Call me Bee

        Tron realness.  Indeed!

    • Glammie

Damn straight TLo.  Props to anyone who managed to do anything interesting on the red carpet last night.  Girl wore stripes–Bond girl stripes.  What’s not to love?

    • teensmom99

’80s nighttime soap opera vixen realness, indeed.

    • gabbilevy

Best thing she’s done in a while. Love that it is fairly covered up, yet still insanely sexy. It feels much more appropriate. Also, this eye makeup is working for her like crazy.

      … still hate the hair.

    • OrigamiRose

Ha, I love the Dominique Devereaux shout out!  I do wish the shoulder pads were a bit softer, though.

    • Alyssa

Absolutely amazing! She needs to lean toward this instead of the desparate sexy looks she’s been going for lately. This made up for all those recent mistakes in my book! WERQ!!!

      • lexilexi

         Absolutely.  Heidi – take notes.

        • Rand Ortega

Did you see what TLo tweeted about her & her dress last night?
          “Guten Tag, Titsen!”
I couldn’t stop laughing for an hour!

          • Call me Bee

Yes–I was embarrassed for her, fer cripes sake!

    • DTLAFamilies

This dress makes her look like a rectangle. Not one of my favorites.

    • http://twitter.com/yankeefoxtrot Alex McGeagh

She clearly must bathe in the blood of a thousand virgins. Girlfriend DOES. NOT. AGE.

    • shawnhunter

when i saw this i screamed YESSSSSS

    • jw_ny

Gorgeous!   Love the lines in it, and the shoulders in this dress…very architectural.  Her tits look great…well supported and not too in your face.

    • Susan Sontag

This was almost the same dress as the one Jane Fonda wore.  I liked them both.  Very sharp.  Very fierce.

edited to add: duh, they’re both Versace

      • carolclark12

Agree, especially about Jane Fonda’s dress.  I think I dreamed about it last night.  She was one of the best for me, in spite of the yellow.

    • Mistie Holler

Usually, it’s not acceptable to slap someone. But while wearing that dress, it’s not acceptable NOT to slap someone.

      • lovelyivy

extra points for pushing them in a pool!

    • Judy_J

I loved this!  She looks amazing, and gives Charlize a run for her money in the fierceness department.

    • greymain

just A-may-zing. Girl has got it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=559324312 Pablo Ulloa

      i fkn hate that hair!!!!!

    • tallgirl1204

You know, I was studying this dress last night.  Because it wasn’t Halle’s usual “I am going to show you what a great body I have” dress.  I mean, it does show her great body, right?  but not in an obvious way.  AND, it could be worn well by someone much older than her (was kind trying to picture la Mirren in it)– but it is not ageing or “old” in any way– it is simply fierce and classic– you say ’80s, but I say 1940s/50s dark-haired screen goddess– Jane Russell maybe?

      • Stubenville

It would have been perfect on Jane Fonda.

      • Adriana_Paula

        Ava Gardner.

    • PrunellaV

She looks like Nefertiti. Even her ears are pretty!

    • http://profiles.google.com/epsteincj Claudia Epstein

I have to agree.  I thought it was a top look as soon as I saw it.

    • appliquer

FANTASTIC! So much better than some of the stuff she’s worn earlier in the awards season. Take a look, Jennifer Aniston. This is how you dress your age and look terrific.

      • Qitkat

IMHO, too much dress for JA to handle. And her current hair would.not.do. But perfect for Halle.

    • TropiCarla

I loved it last night and I had not even seen DAT. ASS. Whew! She is all kinds of fine.

    • Araina23

It looked good on the RC, but it looked amazing when she walked out to present.

    • tallgirl1204

Augh, now I will quibble with myself.  For as much as that dress cost, they coulda put shoulder pads in that were HER skin color.

    • Qitkat

      Art Deco. LOVE.

    • Wendi126

Her cleavage should win an Oscar

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

      Goooooooooldfiiiiiingaaaaaaaaaa.
Let that count as my snaps up for this.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OLSER5H3A6FPBAZOEIQIOBHAYM Elizabeth Rust

      OK, *that’s* a “WOW!!”

      GoryDetails

    • annrr

This was my favorite dress of the night.

    • Joanna Schuth

I thought it was all fabulous with the exception of the visible shoulder pads. Shouldn’t be able to see underpinnings.

    • margaret meyers

I like the black illusion modesty panel on the slit at the back of the dress.  It’s really in keeping with this columnar, undisturbed silhouette.  You really don’t even want to see her legs.

But she really needs new hair and new makeup. This look is tired, and it makes her look a bit tired, too.

    • NDC_IPCentral

As I look at all these “they’re poured into it” gowns, lovely though these Spanx’d shapes be, I’m repeatedly thinking “how in the world do any of these dames answer a call of nature, if nature just… calls???”  I didn’t watch any of the Awards (call me a cranky contrarian), but I know they go on for hours and hours… and at some point don’t a few bladders just scream “Empty me!”

Does some poor assistant have to follow trussed-up-star into the loo to get her out and back in her getup?  I refuse to think of the diaper solution, which a lot of these dresses wouldn’t accommodate anyway… would they?

      • l_c_ann

The only time I saw H Weinstein last night was towards the end of the show, it was a long shot towards the stage, a segue to a commercial, and there was old H, hustling to a bathroom break.
So we know at least one bladder wasn’t abused last night.

    • Kristi Mitchell

My ONLY complaint – the shoulder pads are too big and you can see them sticking out the sides, which was really distracting to me last night when she was on t.v. – aside from that – fabulous!

    • Stubenville

That is one severe dress, but she’s pulling it off. The casual hair fights the overall look, though.

    • Girl_With_a_Pearl

She looked fantastic.  It’s kind of an odd dress, isn’t it?  And the end of it is a little weird from the front.  But she WERQed it.

    • Kayceed

      Ferocious!

    • MzzPants

      I LOVE this.

    • mhleta

Spectacularly inspired dress for her. I want to make a hood ornament out of her and mount her on the front of a beautiful classic car. I want to make a sky scraper out of her. I want to drag Margaret Bourke-White out of her grave to photograph this. This look somehow needs to be immortalized. It’s architectural and freaking gorgeous.

      • Adriana_Paula

This post needs to be immortalized.

    • Tamara Hogan

      PERFECTION.

    • ojosazules

I do not like it. Something is wrong with my eyesight, apparently.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1540233153 Malve Lyborg

Exactly – my sister and I exclaimed “Denver Clan” (which was what Dynasty was called in Germany) the minute we saw her…

    • http://www.facebook.com/CameronETurner Cameron Turner

She was stunning last night….. all others should just bow……

    • Elizabeth Silverstein

She said she told Donatella she wanted a bond girl dress. Nailed it.

    • Mazenderan

Spot on – that dress belongs to Alexis Carrington.

    • MissMariRose

I’m such a sucker for Art Deco anything that I literally squee’d when I saw her last night.

    • cleep1000

      I do not like it.

    • Zippypie

I hated this.  Really hated it.  Not sure if it’s because it looks like a costume or it’s so friggin’ boxy or it’s the hair and the dress together or the colors or the stripes but man, I just hate it.  Grrrrr….

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

This looked amazing on camera last night. Perfect gown for her.

    • Beardslee

aah, sleeves.  And what an interesting dress.

    • MilaXX

She looks good & let’s face it, this is as demure as Halle gets. She wanted a Bond girl dress and this fits the bill.

    • fringebenefit

      Splenderific.

    • kat89

She looks like that dress was poured onto her body. Gorgeous.

    • Daktari100

It seems a little funny to say this when there’s that open back and all that cleavage showing in the front, but it’s nice to see a little less skin than usual.  This time there’s just enough to be sexy, yet still classy.

    • MaryanneGirl

“Two snaps up and a Champagne flute in a fireplace, girl!” I just laughed out loud in the middle of my class. Thank you, gentlemen! (And Miss Berry looks hot as HELL in this!)

    • http://twitter.com/aStudiobytheSea a Studio by the Sea

Nice. I like the Chrysler Building vibe we’ve got going on here.

    • formerlyAnon

I thought she was in the running for best look of the night.

    • pylgrym

I liked the dress but I think the shadowing effect that showed up for some reason around the midsection looked like a baby bump

    • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

OK, I can’t stand Halle Berry, but damn if she doesn’t look amazing here.

    • paintedfish

Just wish it didn’t have visible shoulder pads.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/WVTYDX4T7FOCBV4H4REANLN7BQ s k

Dominique Devereux – LOVE IT.  The only way it could have been MORE Devereux or Carrington is if it were a jumpsuit.  This seems like such a departure for her even though it is Versace. Love her hair. She, Charlize and Anne really outshone the long-haired ladies in terms of styling.

    • http://twitter.com/NJPaganelli NJPaganelli

This was my best dressed of the night. Excepting of course Little Miss Q.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=720650914 Ronica Skarphol Brownson

She looks amazing, but what’s the deal with her nails? Looks like a half a sticker. Bottom part (toward nail bed) isn’t shiny, and there’s a visible line. What’s that about?

    • Corsetmaker

Very Deco. I’m not normally keen on her choices but this is pretty stunning. I’ve been impressed with the fit on a lot of the gowns this year. Not seen anything *yet* that looks obviously borrowed.

    • http://www.facebook.com/claudeth.forbin Claudeth Forbin

Ms. Halle was best in dress, or at least the second runner up.  Ms. Naomi, looked great, but next to Halle, she missed the boat.

    • marilyn

I think HB is in transition.  She is trying bedhead-hair, and bolder styled dresses.  I really prefer her in the old sequined towel look that she has left behind.  She is beautiful, but I just don’t like the way this dress looks on her.  The color does nothing for her and it makes her shoulders look very big.  It looks more like a costume for Grace Jones in a Bond or Star Trek movie.  Just a difference of taste, I suppose.

    • Amenaneri

Totally amazing dress and she looks fierce!  The hair is also shockingly vertical–looks like flames shooting up from an inferno.  She’s rivaling Lyle Lovett for hair height here.   Although the contrast between the Medusa-hair looseness (how much hair spray did it take to make it stick up?) and the totally strict linear dress was kind of balancing.  I thought she was perfection.  And even her hands look gorgeous–there were several times last night with the silly Mani-Cam that I was shocked at how old, unmoisturized, ungroomed, etc. some ladies’ hands looked, but Halle’s hands don’t even age.  How does she do it?  I agree with others–bathing in virgin’s blood?  Sacrificing unicorns?

      • Lilithcat

I was shocked at how old, unmoisturized, ungroomed, etc. some ladies’ hands looked, but Halle’s hands don’t even age.  How does she do it?

        Because black don’t crack.

    • http://www.facebook.com/melanie.martin47 misfit47

Yes I’ve been waiting for this one! The first time I saw it I thought “well that is…..a little weird”…but the more pictures I saw, the more I was drawn back to it, utterly hypnotized. I have since decided I lOVE this dress. I love the whole look. It may be my favorite of the evening. And I don’t know that anyone else could wear it either. She just owns it.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

This, this is how you look sexy without looking skanky, Ms. Halle.  You pin up a picture of you in this dress and remember it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Erin-Hines/620149309 Erin Hines

Really? Giant exposed shoulder pads (shudder) earns a Werq?? Think you’ve just been staring at dresses too long guys.

    • EEKstl

Flawless.  Nothing else to say.  Just…flawless.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_RDEDI3ONWSVDQS5GXKKBIML3H4 Chase

She’s a beautiful woman and it’s a lovely dress, but after all that scandalous news about how she handled her custody arrangements, I just can’t like her.  I don’t want to see anything she’s in.

      • SRQkitten

        Chase,

Yes, you’re not alone on that one, really don’t want to give any respect to a woman who’s trying to split a young girl & her daddy. On the other hand, given some of her more desperate “I’m still fiercely HAWT” looks of late, this is amazingly classy.

        srq

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_RDEDI3ONWSVDQS5GXKKBIML3H4 Chase

She’s amazingly beautiful and aging like she’s got a portrait hidden somewhere. But no matter what she’s wearing, all I see are crazy eyes. I have the same reaction to Winona Ryder.

      • Anniebet

I dunno, judging a person on the info we get from today’s sensationalist media seems a tad harsh. Besides, this is about her clothes not her personal life.

        • jabes

Ever since her hit and run accident, I’ve loathed her.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_RDEDI3ONWSVDQS5GXKKBIML3H4 Chase

Fair enough. I probably shouldn’t have commented at all, but I just have such a negative knee-jerk to seeing Halle these days, whether she’s fabulously dressed or not. Perhaps that will wear off in time, if she can stay out of the tabloids.

    • Eva_baby

My absolute favorite of the night.  She stepped right out of Metropolis.

    • unbornfawn

      Perfection.

    • Carla_Charlton

      Fits her like a glove.

    • http://profiles.google.com/melantha.chimera Eileen Duffy

I’m not terribly fond of the (visible) shoulder pads, but otherwise just gorgeous!

    • tripletmom96

i LOVED this dress — i think it was probably my fav of the night….on some it might be a little too busy, but she is WERQing it like crazy.  it fits her perfectly sexy without being vulgar….awesome!

    • LaSylphide

First time in 20 years I haven’t burst out laughing at the sight of shoulder pads that big. Definite WERQ.

    • Pennymac

She looks amaze-balls. Some one call Mr. Redmayne and tell him that his hair is a poor imitation of Halle’s awesome doo.

    • oldbobbydraper

i hate halle as a person but she totally hit a walk-off homerun with this look. it was incredible on her.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=603005248 Jeff Warhurst

      She looks ridiculous; good ridiculous.

    • Warrior89

      Zoot Suit Drag Queen.

    • e jerry powell

I missed the back detail on TV.  I have new respect for this gown.

    • kalisa

That dress looked better on stage than it did close up. She’s no fool.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

She looks like Queen Nefertiti. In a really awesome way.

    • colleenjanel

I just noticed … She and Eddie Redmayne have the same hairstyle.

    • Cousin_Rose

      Perfect WERQ

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Another one of my favorites. She looked stunning. THIS is how you do sexy AND classy.

    • capybara_cafe

I really don’t care for the dress, but she looks undeniably amazing in it. She’s gorgeous, and #2 on my list of women I want to be when I grow up.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=10910518 Erica Woods Tucker

DAYUM!  She was Linda Evans, Joan Collins, Diahann Caroll, and everyone else who ever wore a shoulder pad in the 80s!  She was putting it down!  I loved it, and I don’t like it when her hair is slicked. This hair style gave her just the right amount of softness.

    • MissAmynae

      Age-appropriate Hot!

    • Anniebet

Dang, I wish I hadn’t seen the white shoulder pads. Cannot un-see.

    • Susan Crawford

Thank God she and Charlize were not in the same shot – that much glamour would have melted my laptop! As it is, Ms. Berry has done it again – awesome. (Does anyone else wonder what the picture in her attic looks like???)

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/SIW6UBBGHMNFAAOH2KEMRMVMCU beawin

      Nope, not striped sequins.

    • pookiesmom

I’m not crazy about the dress, but HOW DOES THIS WOMAN NEVER AGE??? Has she been replaced by a cyborg? Even her hands (at least the outsides) are nearly as smooth as my 27 year old hands. WTF?

      • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

like, no matter how much surgery you’ve had, the hands always reveal your age.  and mine reveal that not only am i getting old, but i ate cheetos.

        • pookiesmom

LOL!! Seriously. No aging OR cheetos for Ms. Berry.

          …or is hand-Botox, like, now a “thing”?

    • adnama79

This gets my vote for BEST.

    • Pterodactyl111

LOVE the shoulders. Can giant shoulders come back now??

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

with my broad shoulders, the only devereux realness i’d be serving up is blanche.

    • Sal Neslusan

dress is great, styling is terrible. Needed sleek hair and fresh makeup with a bold lip.

    • BigShamu

What an incredibly beautiful woman.  Who does not seem to age.  Gorgeous.

    • http://www.facebook.com/jacoryd JaCory Deon

It’s a killer dress but for me she looked oddly uncomfortable in it.  Also the shape (or shoulders) needed something soften the effect (lighter hair) or to take it all the way (maybe heavy makeup, dark lip, I don’t know).  She is a very attractive woman but I would like to see her tone it down a little bit…we get it, you still got it, now put it away girl.

    • kathrineb

I don’t usually like this sort of thing but Hale is WERQing it for sure. Don’t like the volume in the hair and why are her eyebrows grey?

    • bd73

she asked versace for “bond girl” and got “dynasty” instead. amazing but retro which gianni versace had no patience for. berry is suddenly dressing ‘her age.’

    • nannypoo

I thought this was the best look of the night. I’m surprised at all the people complaining about her hair. I seriously love her hair and wish mine would do the same thing.

    • Therese Bohn

      Bow Down the the Queen!

    • DesertDweller79

I love this so much!  She is so freaking beautiful, so it is hard for her to get it wrong.  But, wow!  This is just fabulous.  I LOVE her makeup.

    • Michael Davis

      Okkaaaayyyyyy??!!
She is working the mess out of that pattern. It works well with her body.

    • Citric

      She looks a bit… N64. A lady with a low polygon count.

    • Claudia Fernandes

the dress is stuning, but that hair…

    • decormaven

Dominique Devereux! You are spot on! This was one of my favorite looks for the night. Hope she veers more toward this type of look for the upcoming “The Call” pole dance.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Clydette-Wantland/673315286 Clydette Wantland

I hated this dress.  I especially do not like the way the stiff shoulder pads show through.  Yuk.

    • samo_samo

When I saw it in a red carpet photo I didn’t like it, but when I saw it as she was doing the Bond tribute it looked so much better to me.  It really grew on me.  Pretty fab.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Magnificent. She looks so classy and gorgeous. Loved it.

    • megohd

I love that you said this! I was calling her look (and Jane Fonda’s) “Dynasty Chic.” And then you go invoke Dominique Devereaux — I feel validated!

LOVED IT ON TV and it looks even better in the close-ups.

More color–red lips, red earrings–would have knocked it out of the park for me.
Is this nude fad (makeup, clothing, shoes) ever going away?
I like the short guy in photo 3 who’s going in for a feel.

I shall never tire of her hair.  LOVE.

I don’t know why, but the combination of the sequins and the sheer fabric on her sleeves is making me think of Christmas decorations.

      Exquisite, but hand cream needed

Woo! She’s stopped saying, “here is my naked flesh, still hot in middle age!” Now if only Heidi Klum would do the same.

It didn’t work for me; I thought it looked like a Dynasty, 80s type gown. The shoulders looked dated, the heavy looking pattern
and fabric, abit garish and costume; which I know is alot of what the Oscars are.. but no.

      this is just horrid………

The Oscars have a talent section this year that involves recreating Joan Crawford from Mildred Pierce.
