Oscars Baby WERQ: Quvenzhane Wallis in Armani

Posted on February 25, 2013

Oh please. As if there was EVEN a question.

Quvenzhane Wallis attends the 2013 Academy Awards wearing a Giorgio Armani dress and her signature puppy purse.

A perfect little lady.

We don’t know why, but the fact that her puppy purse is sporting a tiara just tickles us.

She looks like a little Disney princess.

    • Monabel

Disney is no compliment in my lexicon.

      •  When you’re 9, it’s ok to look like a Disney princess. In fact, you’re SUPPOSED to.

        • Monabel

Nah. Just because one is 9, one need not settle for saccharine banality. And she didn’t.

    • MissAmynae

I yelled “TIANA!!” at my tv. Such a lovely girl. Looking forward to watching her grow up. She’s certainly got the acting chops to stay in the business, and the steady family to keep her out of trouble. Loved how she looked at her Mom when Seacrest asked her if she was going to the afterparties.

    • roadtrip1000

She’s looks way better than a Disney princess! She’s serving up some adorable realness. Love how she radiates confidence. Just looking at her makes me smile.

  • werika

Adorbs, but I think she could’ve done without the shawl.

    • Jessica Goldstein

I’ve been mentally replacing it with a dressy cardigan (crystal buttons) or adorable shrug myself. But that’s just a quibble, not an actual complaint.

      • barbarienne

I’ve been doing the same mental replacements, but I think that would bring it more to “precious” in the bad way. The girl is nine years old, sure, but she’s here as nominee. The shawl holds the outfit to the serious side, while the puppy purse and princess hair give the charming nod to her age.

        • RebeccaKW

I don’t know about ‘kids today,’ but when I was her age and I played dress up, I always used my blanket to make a shawl.  It made my ball gown (nightgown) seem so much more sophisticated.

      •  I think a fluffy shrug would have been good. She should get tips from the Obama girls on how to do a dressy cardigan.

        • janiemary

Maybe Bradley Cooper’s mom could have lent her the one she was wearing!

          • suzq

Oh, gosh no!  It would have aged her to the point where George Clooney would have hit on her.

    • Janet B

She wears it better than I would have done.

    • foggywood

It must have been scary out there!  I would have had a puppy purse, a shawl, and a LED nightlite and I’m a 40 year old man!

      • OffToSeeHim

foggywood, I think I love you! That was so funny! I think she looks just sweet – that Onion twitter was kind of weird though.

    • roadtrip1000

       Aww. I love the shawl.

  • Anabag

Amy Adams should have worn that purse.

    • Amy Adams couldn’t find a grey puppy purse.

      • 3boysful

That’s cause she had a grey puppy skirt.

  • I love that the puppy purse got dressed up too!

    • gabbilevy

I read all about how the designers who were vyying to dress Quvenzhane were also making matching outfits for the puppy purses. Her mom contacted the puppy purse company to make her a bunch of different bags, and this particular puppy purse is actually modeled after her real Yorkie 🙂

      •  How adorable!

      • sojourneryouth

I am just so happy that Q’s mother is contracting for age-appropriate puppy purses and not letting her dress like a little prosti-tot.  I used to teach kindergarten a few years back, and some of the mothers would send their 5-year-olds to school–TO SCHOOL–in booty shorts and half tops.  I wish I was kidding.

        • Those are clearly parents that don’t pay attention to what their child is walking out of the house in.  One of my girls tried to dress like that all the time.  At that age, she really didn’t understand why I made her change.  Now, at 16, she dresses a LOT more conservatively all on her own while still being an individual.

          • sweetestsith

Often it isn’t just not paying attention though, I know a fair number of girls whose mothers bought them “sexy” clothes from a very young age. Apparently its “cute” when they are tiny (bikinis on toddlers? I will never understand), and the moms think they should dress sexy “while they have the body” once they hit teens.

          • sojourneryouth

Exactly!  Far too many parents don’t understand that their daughters are NOT opportunities for them to dress up a doll, relive their glory years, or create little mimi-mes that wear the same inappropriate things their mom’s try to wear.  No thanks.  Just be a good parent, please!

Since we had a dress code, I was calling parents to pick up their little girls left and right.  These parents would actually argue with me that it’s okay for their five-year-olds to have “Juicy” bedazzled across their asses (yes, this was in the early 2000’s).  And I’m no prude, so I wasn’t happy to have to tell them to get off my lawn!

          • adnama79

A friend just had to tell her daughter she can’t be in her dance recital (4 yrs old) b/c she couldn’t, in good conscience, allow her to wear the prostitot outfit the other parents selected (she couldn’t attend the meeting and was shocked at the outcome).  So effed up.  She’s super bummed – she lives in town of less than 1,000 and the next town is 45 miles away, so no other options for dance classes.  🙁

            People suck sometimes.

          • 3boysful

I was going to reply that if they’re in kindergarten, SOMEONE bought them the prosti-tot (love that!) outfit.

          •  I had this straight from a mother of two: bikinis on toddlers make potty time easier. That was her only reason. [shrug]

          • sojourneryouth

See, that makes sense! I do have friends with toddlers and young’uns hard to toilet who do the same, but then there are those toddler-friendly bikinis with big rufffles and such that don’t look the same as those made for adult women.

          • I have a five year old who goes to day camp in the summer, I buy her two piece suits but not bikinis, I opt for tankinis/tshirt two pieces which in my opinion provide more coverage to protect her skin and can function as a reasonable outfit for the beach if she throws some shorts on over the bottom. You can find kid friendly two pieces, my kid will never be found in a triangle string bikini until she is on spring break paid for by herself, and by then I hope she has the good sense to figure out that you don’t need to put it all in the window!

          • sweetestsith

That seems sensible to me. I know two piece suits are easier for me, I’m sure its even more helpful for kids! Pulling off wet suits is a pain. But yeah, age appropriate options are good…

          • adnama79

          • chelwi

I was in a line once when I overheard a man make a comment to another man in line about his daughter’s outfit (she was standing off to the side in a tight shirt and booty shorts). “I can’t believe she dresses like that, but she’s sixteen, what am I going to do?” And he shrugged and laughed.

I had to fight myself to not to turn around and say, “I don’t know, maybe parent her?”

          • JANE LANE

In their defense, my mom, who regularly had to shop for clothes for my 12 year old half sister, says that it’s impossible for her to find clothes in the little girl’s department that don’t look like downsized clothes for grown women. She’d have to go over to the workout wear to find t-shirts that covered her up and buy old lady shorts for her.She suffered from looking like an adult while still a child, like I did, and she got a lot of unwanted attention from people who shouldn’t have been looking at her even when she dressed like the child she was.

          • sojourneryouth

It may be hard, but it is possible.  I have taught all grades, and you can find appropriate, cute stuff for all ages if you look in the right places.

          • Donna Schmidt

Target has plenty of appropriate clothing at inexpensive prices

          • CT14

Target has had nothing but ugly clothes for over a year.

          • adnama79

Ugly is better than slutty if there are no other options.

          • adnama79

Old Navy, JCP, the internet, thrift shops…

          • JANE LANE

Don’t get me wrong, she found it, she wasn’t going to send that child out looking older than she was. Unfortunately, her bio-mom didn’t have the same reservations.

        • lovelyivy

Ahhh the joys of working in a school with pre-teens and young teens- I have vivid memories! The only thing worse than the grade school fashion show contestants (often featuring booty shorts) was talent show day. THEN you got the booty short devotees getting up on stage and twerking (google it) and a solid two hours of being mortified and concerned.

          • sojourneryouth

Yep.  What they consider “dancing” would earn them hearty tips!  Where is Chris Rock when you need him?

      • Elizabeth Silverstein

I die. That is the cutest thing I have ever heard.

      • adnama79

I’m so glad you posted that!  Adorable!!!

  • She’s super cute, but that dress design is meant for someone about seven decades older, especially with the ‘wrap.’ She could have worn something much more youthful and modern. The puppy purse is immune to criticism.

  • Beardslee

Lovely dress and love that purse!  I was wondering what she and her parents put in it to keep her occupied.  A snack, something to read?

    • Jena Marie DiPinto

Nothing! She was attentive and poised the whole night! The girl is a professional…

    • 3boysful

I know–when I saw shots of her, she seemed remarkably attentive and into it.

  • Stubenville

Cute as a button. And well spoken on the runway despite all the hubbub that was surely going on around her.

  • Yulie29

She was fabulous in ever way. See ladies, this is the sort of color you should wear on the red carpet, not the many shades of blush and beige.

Although I don’t think anyone else can pull off a puppy purse, certainly not one with a tiara.

    • You know all the ladystars were wishing they could carry a puppy purse on the red carpet. Only one I could see actually doing it: Helena Bonham Carter.

      • And HBC’s would have worn a tiny top hat, not a tiara.

      • Nicholas

Just you wait a few weeks. The big labels are going all in on Woof Couture.

  •  Totally, unquestionably adorable.

  • shirab

If someone had given me this at age 9, even if it was just to wear to an elementary school Bingo night, I would have been just beside myself.

    • Jennifer Coleman

My inner 9 year old, who never had a child actress who looked like me to look up to, is squealing with joy.

  • anotherEloise

Grown-up actresses, take note.  Thank you, Miss Wallis, for saying no to boring beige and choosing a beautiful blue.

  • BuffaloBarbara

Love this.  And her little cheer when they played her nomination was adorable.

  • Girl_With_a_Pearl

So cute.  She wore a gorgeous bright color and was one of the best dressed last night.

  • werq. werq. werq. werq. werq.

  • Sobaika

    • eowyn_of_rohan

She is like my ideal daughter at this point, putting aside the whole awesome little actress thing.  Whatever her parents are doing, it’s helping to shape a terrific kid.

    • NC_Meg

Last night I saw a photo of her showing her purse off to Jessica Chastain (who reached out to have a better look at it) and I also squealed. So adorable.

  • She’s so precious I can’t even stand it. I love her puppy purses!

  • Synnamin

    SO GOOD!

  • Le_Sigh

ADORABLE.  I want her and Kiernan Shirpka to be BFFs!!!!

  • barbarienne

When I saw the pics of her, I started giggling madly with delight. She looks so adorable.

  • shelley514

Baby WERQ indeed!  She’s so adorable.  Makes me wish I had a daughter to play dress up with!

  • I hope someone took her photo and made a “My first day at school” type of picture: “My first Academy Awards”.

When she appeared on screen, it was (for me, at least) like a billion puppies and kitties parading in front of me, she’s just soooooooo cute.

  • Yea; she’s adorable.  I saw the movie; she was brilliant.  And I loved watching her root when her movie was announced during the show.

    • Pterodactyl111

I thought it was a given that she wasn’t going to win, but she 100% deserved that nomination for sure. Fantastic.

  • Introspective

the puppy purse is EVERYTHING. she is too freaking cute!

wishing I had a little girl to dress up. love my son, but its not the same. little girls have the greatest clothing choices.

  • shelley514

Not only is the puppy wearing a tiara, she’s wearing a little frou frou puppy coat/gown as well!  Where does she find such picture perfect accessories.

    • She has a deal with the company that makes them….in which they make them just for her. I read an article about it somewhere not too long ago. Talk about hitting the jackpot for marketing.

      • There was a Wall Street Journal article (in which our beloved TLo were mentioned). She got the first three at a local JCPenney, then her mom contacted the manufacturer when it became apparent that there would be a lot of awards season red carpets and asked if they would be willing to give her additional ones. They sent a bunch more and made this one and another special for the Oscars.

        • julnyes

  • I totally did not see the puppy tiara until just this second. I’m dying at the adorableness.

  • Chickadeep

The puppy purse (complete with tiara!) is killing me; so cute. She’s hitting that early Drew Barrymore/Kiernan Shipka sweet spot; just the right note of age-appropriate style and fun. Snaps to the little lady & kudos for her team (whomever they are) for getting it right.

  • ellabob

She is super cute, but I think the dress is a little overwhelming on her.. great color – great purse – but a little less material would have made the look perfect..

    • Snailstsichr

But she looks like a fairy tale princess, so it works for me.

  • bxbourgie

I agree that she should have on something more youthful, but she’s cute as a button, so who cares.  Love the purse.  Hope to see more of her in the near future.

  • I love her hair! Couldn’t see it so well last night.

  • kmk05

She is ADORBS. I could have done without the shawl, but she discarded it when she was sitting. Her fistbump when she was announced made me squee. She is one badass girl.

  • tereliz

Lil Hushpuppy all grown up! She’s just adorable.

As much as I love Jennifer Lawrence—I still haven’t seen Silver Linings Playbook—I happen to think Quvenzhané was robbed. 😉 She was phenomenal in Beasts of the Southern Wild!

    • julnyes

I enjoy JLaw as well and thought she did an excellent job in Silver Linings Playbook (but I really hated the movie overall). I think Miss QWallis deserved it more just because she WAS the entire movie. She carried the entire film at five year’s old.

The nod was nice and I hope to see her get more in the future!

      • tereliz

That’s exactly how I feel. Her performance really elevated that movie from an obscure indie flick to an internationally acclaimed tour de force. I’m also glad that the movie’s well-deserved noms will help the local production company create many more authentic New Orleans films.

(segway: I’m trying to sell a novel right now and by the time it gets pubbed and optioned—God-willing—she’ll be the perfect age for one of my characters. Wishful thinking, but I can’t wait, lol!)

  • carolynmo

She always grips these purses with both hands as if someone might snatch them. And she should because, Baby Girl? I want one. With a tiara.

    • Which makes her all the more precious because it seems to me she doesn’t know quite what to do with her hands, she’s not been ‘taught’ to pose for the red carpet.

  • meowing

Brava!  And kudos to Mom for keeping this adorable munchkin age-appropriate.  Read that she’s next doing Annie…maybe I’ll be able to stomach it, only ’cause of her sweetness.  Couldn’t abide it before!

    • tereliz

OMG, that will be epic. Off to google, thanks! 😉

  • Melizmatic

  • If I were her age attending the Oscars, this would have been my ideal dress. I’m not sure how much more youthful this could have been, this looks like the majority of the flower girl dresses I’ve seen at friends weddings. She has a deal with the Puppy Purse makers. Smart on both their parts.

  • Janet B

    She looks beautiful.
The cute purse adds the right touch of adorableness to her outfit.

  • Kimbolina

In a way, I wish she had won, just to see if she had brought the puppy purse up on stage with her.  I’d like to think she would have.

  • Mary229

    Sweet, precious, beautiful child.

  • KayEmWhy

Simply adorable! It’s that perfect balance between princess and little girl wants to be a grownup. Does anybody know who makes her purses?

    • MilaXX

Sorry disqus ate my post. Its custom made for her by a company called Poochie & co. Her mother got the first one from JC Penney then contacted them about making more for her. This one is modeled after her real life dog and has a tag that reads “Poochie & Co. For Quvenzhane Wallis”

      • KayEmWhy

Thanks MilaXX! I knew it had to have humble beginnings. They’re just too cute for words.

  • Pterodactyl111

I think the answer to your question is “BECAUSE her puppy purse is sporting a tiara.”

    • MilaXX

      meant to reply to KayEmWhy

  • frannyprof

She is too cute for words.

  • She said to Ryan Seacrest, “Wait, it’s somebody’s name…it’s ‘Armani!'”

  • Saw a picture of her dancing at the Governor’s Ball without the shawl.  Super cute!!  I have a 9 year old daughter, too.  She’s always cold, even if it’s warm, so she’d have been wearing the shawl, too!

  • She was a delightfully refreshing spot in an evening mostly full of dull and disappointing.

  • Carrieanno

Best dressed of the night, hands down!  Makes me miss having a 9 year old girl!  At this moment, anyway.

  • I actually liked it better without the shawl, but it gets chilly sitting in an auditorium for hours, so I thought it was a very appropriate choice. And her little ballet flats peeking out from underneath her dress are so adorable. I find her completely charming.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

Definitely the best dressed of the night. The puppy tiara confirms it!

  • MilaXX

Seriously adore this kid!….. and her little dog too!

  • GorgeousThings

    A tiara and a tutu!

  • nannypoo

She’s always dressed perfectly for the event. Here she’s channeling her inner princess for her most special evening.  The bodice is gorgeous and the color is one of my favorites. Her hair looks beautiful.

  • littlemac8

So refreshingly her age!  The blue is so pretty on her but I agree with those who think the shawl is a little overwhelming.  On my small frame I would not try to manage a to-the-floor shawl but she gets an award for most appealing and the puppy purse obviously gets its’ own reward!!!

  • SistaT

She makes my heart swell.  I just love her.  She described her dress as “sparkly and fluffy” and I thought to myself, “What could be more perfect?”  Having a nine-year-old daughter myself, it chokes me up just to look at her.  Such a beautiful little girl.

  • rumcg66

I love that she told one interviewer on the red carpet “I liked it because it’s sparkly and puffy.”

  • shawnhunter

  • mozzer0906

She is adorable as is her little princess puppy purse.

  • She is freakin’ adorable.  And the tiara and tulle on the puppy purse?  To die.

  • Future Diva for sure.

  • Dot

OH MY GOD THE PURSE. Darling.

  • Too cute…She was werqing the heck out of her day in the sun!

  • Lilak

    (I’m just sitting here purring . . . . )

  • mjude

she is so adorable. how cute was she when they announced her name for the award?

  • MilaXX

She also just finished a movie with Brad Pitt.

  • Vickiefantastico

    Precious! Absolutely adorable!

  • fringebenefit

I don’t think it is scientifically possible to be cuter.

  • appliquer

Love the color – but I think the dress and shawl are too much for her. Too much fabric. If it was on some 20-something you would call it matronly.

  • MintaHallWriter

    Total Adorbs…

I thought she was a complete charmer last night–first time I’d seen her except in still photos.  She’s a cutie-pie all right. And the matching tiara on her puppy purse was a major grin.  I’m going to be sad when she grows out of the puppy purses.

  • I think she looks perfect and I’m quite glad she *didn’t* go the cardigan route. This is the OSCARS!  Girl should get to dress up fancy.  She looks like an elegant little girl and has the poise to match.  And of course the puppy purse keeps it real. *dies*

  • Alyssa

It tickles me as well! I just adore her & her puppy purses! She is just so cute, and I love the dress, and feel the shawl is her playing dress up, just like all kids her age…except most don’t get to do it in Armani!

  • oatmealpie

Reminding us that the Red Carpet is just one big game of dress-up.

  • Angel Ratliff

Love the dress, but her puppy is wearing Amy Adams’ dress.

  • golden_valley

So fresh, unselfconscious and cute!  It saddens me to think that she’ll grow up and come under pressure to surgically alter something or starve herself to look good.  Enjoy this while you can darlin’!

  • peachy

what a doll — and dressed appropriately for her age. wish ALL red carpeters could remember that rule!

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

i am in my 40s; she is 9 and is more poised and polished and sophisticated than i will ever be.  watching her on the red carpet, she was so charming.  i’m totally there for annie.

  • leave_Blake_alone

My only critique is that the shawl kind of ages the look. I think she looked cuter when she had it off. Still, pretty great. And that doggy purse is THE BEST.

  • Nonmercisansfacon

Too cute for words. Screw the Onion!

  • bluefish

She’s adorable, gave an amazing performance, was beyond cute in her fist pumps last night, and looks like she was dressed at home or home basecamp with love and care.   All props to her and to her family.   Nothing to critique here.

McFarlane made an ass of himself last night by using this very very young lady to take a cheap shot at George Clooney.  Yuck.  Love her the dress the purse the shawl he hair and everything else about her.

    • BrooklynBomber

I was just about to post about that stupid “joke.”  What an ass McFarlane is.

    • OrigamiRose

I tuned him out rather quickly.  His material and delivery of said material was untenable.

    • formerlyAnon

I enjoyed MacFarlane when he was singing – I didn’t know he could – but the level of humor was moderately tasteless and occasionally more-than-moderately sexist. ETA: and often, not funny.

  • ZOMG I did not even notice the tiara.

  • My nine-year-old self wanted a dress like that (and would so have carried the puppy purse). <3 <3 <3

  • SO. ADORABLE. Baby WERQ all the way.

  • BrooklynBomber

    Completely adorable.

  • siriuslover

What a little cutie! My daughter would love that purse! What little girl doesn’t look her best sporting a puppy purse with a tiara?

  • SewingSiren

Love everything about it. If I could get away with it , I’d probably wear it too.

  • She is beautiful and mighty and Seth MacFarlane should be ashamed of the fact that he doesn’t know enough to be ashamed of himself.

  • Such a beautiful child!  And so refreshing to see a child dressed in something that’s totally appropriate for a girl her age.  You WERQ that tiara doggie purse, Quenzhane!

  • OrigamiRose

She’s a doll.  I heard she was very tired on Saturday night at the Spirit Awards, so I hope that she takes some well-earned time to put those little feet up.  We don’t want that smile burning out.

  • Zippypie

A tiara and a tutu on the little pupster!  She is so damn cute and fierce at the same time.  Absolutely awesome WERQ!

  • That child is an old old soul who has lived many lifetimes

  • MzzPants

    You werq it, beautiful angel-girl!

  • formerlyAnon

Props to her parents, she got to Indulge in The Glamuh in a perfectly age-appropriate way.

  • Purr-fection!

  • Love it! Dramatic, age-appropriate, and super-cute.

  • alyce1213

She probably had as much fund dressing up her puppy purse as she did dressing up herself.  What a doll.

  • EEKstl

Beyond adorbs, and she is so frickin’ gorgeous it’s curious to see what she’ll look like in 6 years (when she’s too old for George Clooney)…

  • unbornfawn

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Oh, what a lovely little lady.

  • Scott Isaacs

I keep coming back to these pictures. The dress is certainly pretty enough and perfect for her, and the clutch is all kinds of adorbs. But look at her expression! So guileless…so genuinely happy…and that head tilt pic is enough cute for a lifetime. These pictures make me ashamed that I never saw “Beasts of the Southern Wild.” I really look forward to seeing more of her.

    •  and did you hear her TELL an interviewer to NOT call an actress OLD?!?! “That is not nice!” she told them…. I fell in love at that moment…. you know adults hearing the same questions over and over can put on a happy smile, but this charmer really DID…I watched her being asked the same silly nonsense, but every person she treated like it was the first time hearing it. wonderful. (and T’lo, thank you, I had not noticed the tiny tiara…..even MORE wonderful :))

    • SRQkitten

Do go see this movie, she’s remarkable in it, especially considering her age when it was filmed!

<3 <3 <3 the puppy purse with a tiara! Here's hoping her parents keep her grounded and on track.

  • Trisha26

Not to be Debbie Downer but I don’t like long dresses on tiny girls – mid-calf would have been so cute and no shawl/stole.

    • Sally Brownson

While that makes sense at any other venue… she’d stick out as looking not formal enough. Oscars is pretty much gowns for every woman. And while she might’ve been able to get away with a shorter dress because she’s so young, I think it looks better for her to be dressed like the other nominees in her category.

  • Noelle Haland

It tickles you because it’s freaking ADORABLE, and this child is freaking ADORABLE! I’m happy for Jennifer Lawrence (she’s great & so charming!), but I was really hoping this little girl would win it, just to see her ecstatically happy.

  • Susan Crawford

Absolutely adorable! And to tell you the truth, I would love to rock a tiara-crowned fuzzy puppy purse myself!

  • MilaXX

I forgot to mention how cute she was at the Essence’s Black Women Awards Luncheon where she was honored and thanked her babysitter.

Just adorable! She must have a shelter full of puppy purses! Rock on kiddo!

Heaven, this is just perfect sweet childhood innocence and joy! Her bag is dressed up too. She’s so adorable I hope she had a wonderful night.

Pure joy! Great, appropriate awards look for both child and puppy purse.

  • So Adorable! I was totally smitten by her when she did her Red-Carpet interview with the AP host. She was just so real and the answers were refreshing after all the canned answers given by her older counterparts.
AP Host: There are a lot of big celebrities here, is there anyone you really want to meet?
QW: No, not really, I’m more into cartoons: Brave, Tangled, Toy Story…

QW is not impressed by celebrities!

  • She told Ryan Seacrest that she chose that dress because it was “sparkly and fluffy.” Are there two better reasons on earth to choose a dress? I like the whole thing. There was a element of “little girl playing dress up”  to the ensemble (I think it’s the shawl), but that just makes it even more adorable, imo.

  • It’s a bit matronly, and ages her to at least 11.  😉

Such a doll. The Onion can go swiftly to hell.

How adorable is she?!  I would have liked her outfit even more without the shawl.  Just a little too much fabric for her.  A nice little cardigan would have been perfect.  Love the puppy purse.

A cardigan with a little sparkle would’ve been extra cute if she thanked Michelle Obama for the inspiration!

The puppy purse melts my heart!
