Oscars 2013 WERQ: Charlize Theron in Dior Couture

Posted on February 25, 2013

It’s like we always say: true style comes down to dress + wearer + venue.

Charlize Theron attends the 2013 Academy Awards in a Christian Dior couture gown paired with Harry Winston jewelry and Roger Vivier shoes.

Which means that this dress is beautiful, but it’s another white dress in a long conga line of them on the Oscars red carpet. We might have gotten bored with this dress on practically anyone else, but Miss Charlize is so freaking breathtaking, and responds so well to icy-cold, stripped-down glamour, that the look comes together perfectly. It all rests on that face. And frankly, when you’ve got a face like that, you’d be an idiot not to let it do most of the WERQ.

      Short hair suits her.

      • Jessica O’Connell

Does anything NOT suit this woman? I don’t think I’ve ever seen her look anything but flawless and breathtaking. Freakin’ fabulous!

        • Introspective

charlize is perfection. again. we all need to stop trying.

and her flawless dance number with channing on stage? clearly the only good part of seth mcfarlane’s crash and burn performance.

          • Mary229

I’m pretty sure she’s a former dancer, yes?  Agreed.  She was fabulous.  I just adore her with the short hair.  This reminds me of the way she wore her hair when she first hit the scene.  She hasn’t aged a day.

            • http://profiles.google.com/sauchih Sau-Chih Feng

She is a former dancer! I’m a little annoyed at the number of bloggers who seem amazed that she can dance. If they’d just do their homework, they wouldn’t be surprised.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lucía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

She is a freaking sculpture, is she not?

        • kimmeister

A year or two ago at the Oscars (?), she wore a lavender monstrosity that had gigantic rosettes right on her boobs.  That was one of her rare fails.

      • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

I like it, but I preferred it when it was just a tiny bit longer.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZBFH32YG44LIIZYLSQPMBXMYCU Sarah

I’m with you. Softer would be nice.

      • DTLAFamilies

Unlike Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway, who come across twee and try-hard in short hair, Theron looks completely comfortable and at ease. As she should, because with that face, the more of it she shows, the better.

        • Mary229

You know, I’m gonna have to disagree with Michelle Williams there.  I think Michelle rocks the short hair.  Charlize is a former model and she looks like the model she was.  It’s hard to compare.  But I agree that her face is so stunning that it’s a waste to cover it with hair.

          • DTLAFamilies

Michelle Williams is very pretty and the short hair looks good on her but it also looks mannered and precious, while Charlize wears her hair and that dress in exactly the same way she wears jeans and a t-shirt.

    • Sobaika

Forever envious of ladies with perfectly symmetrical faces who can rock a pixie cut. Bowing to you Charlize!

      • eowyn_of_rohan

Seriously.  And super-tall ladies with perfectly symmetrical faces.  Anytime I try to rock a pixie cut I look like Haley Joel Osment in “The Sixth Sense.”

    • werika

      All hail the ice queen!

    • OffToSeeHim

Where is her other leg in that top shot? I would have said that it would be impossible to get an unattractive picture of her, but that one-legged thing is super weird.

      • Lynn Landry

        Angelina Jolie stole it!

    • MaryanneGirl

Dying over her hair. Love the dress, love the simplicity. Beautiful.

      • TheDivineMissAnn

^^This.  This is a WERQ indeed.  She. shut. it. down.

    • jonnyf8

It made me want to be her and I seldom say that about a woman.

    • VioletFem

She looks so elegant in this. The best she has ever look, frankly, which says a LOT considering this is Charlize Theron. Also, this gown is fairly reminiscent of Anne Hathaway’s Golden Globe look, no? Minus the train, of course.

      • http://twitter.com/SuzBald Susan Baldwin

I wonder if Annie is crying inside, just a little, after seeing this….

        • VioletFem

She won her Oscar. I think she’s doing just fine. Also, Anne looked just as beautiful in her version of the white gown an the GG.

    • http://younghovaswitnesses.tumblr.com/ Caitlin Murphy

She looks amazing. Would have loved a bolder lip, but I really can’t complain.

    • bxbourgie

The look of the night for me.  Amazingly perfect from head to toe.  Even the people behind her in the 7th picture think so.

    • PeaceBang

This was one of the most breathtaking moments of Woman Meets Couture that I have ever seen in my life. It transcended all my usual campy “you go girl, werq, etc.” reactions. It was just pure art.

      • l_c_ann

If we compare this to the barely there dress she wears in some perfume commercial,  this simply stands out in the best way possible.

    • Roosevelt 85

That shot of her looking up is BREATHTAKING!

She looked better than the nominees

    • margaret meyers

That train limply hanging off the back of that dress is making me twitch.

    • Jackie4g

      She’s perfect.

    • drdirection

could not stop looking at her!  Dustin who?

      • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

I loved how absolutely flustered he seemed. I mean, who wouldn’t be, standing next to that amazing glamazon of a woman.

    • decormaven

Bow down! Working it, HTT. She is giving a master class in face here.

    • Tatiana Luján

She looked beautiful because she is beautiful, but that was a very boring gown.

    • Alyssa

Drop dead gorgeous. That’s all I can say!

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

We need to add her to the triumvirate of Tilda, Cate, and Iman (who are all subjects of Queen Helen). You WERQ that haughty haute, girl. Stunning.

    • CaTobes

That face is NOTHING to mess with. Beyond perfection. Sharon Stone is “Bitch stole my look”-ing all over Hollywood right about now.

Not a fan of the peplum though.

      • Kayceed

Yes – definitely got the Sharon Stone in white vibe…

        • shirab

Please please please let Charlize let her face do its own thing as she ages (if she ages, which she very well may not), unlike Sharon and others.

          • http://twitter.com/elisematisse Elise B

My husband actually commented that it looked like she was finally starting to age just a little, not in a bad way, but a human one.  She has tiny, lovely lines around her eyes when she smiles, and I really hope she keeps them.  She is exquisite!

    • stubbornthoughts

    • DinaSews

She looks A-MAZE-ING! (sorry, had to channel Kelly O! Can’t get her annoying cadence out of my head) Kudos to her for not throwing on a necklace as most would do with a strapless gown. Her neck is a showstopper all on its own.

    • call_me_schmeg

      bowing down.

    • SewingSiren

Stunning. She looks to be about 7′ tall.

    • SassieCassy

      ice queen realness.

    • Kimberly Southern-Weber

One of the best Oscar red-carpet looks, ever.  I also liked her dancing gown.

    • procrastinatrice

I knew this was going to be a WERQ post–mainly because she is serving face and attitude. I agree she has that going for her.  I personally don’t like the look at all–she looks like Sharon Stone, which is not a bad thing but I mean she looks  way above her age. I think that is mostly the hair. And the dress is Pronovias for “Sophisticated urban brides.” It leaves me cold and bored.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/2LIE6ISFQUBIAO7OB6U5TAVXXQ Depot'er

have to disagree…white hair, pale skin, white dress….would love to see this when she thaws out..all she needs is pale blue make-up…

      • VioletFem

Charlize Theron is quite (but not overly) tan.

    • http://twitter.com/EnnuiAndMe Ennui Jones

She is servings up annie lennox realness with that Hair.  Love it!

      • Molly

I had the same thought! She could play Annie Lennox in the Eurythmics biopic.  Both are fierce women!

    • Janet B

    • Pants_are_a_must

She owns that hair far, far better than Anne Hathaway ever did hers. And that was also a haircut for a movie.

    • Kayceed

I really loved this – sharply tailored and very feminine. Streamlined with sparkle. Fantastic.

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

The sparkly peplum is just incredible. Completely unexpected – when you look at it from a distance you don’t even see it. And yet when you zoom in for the close up.. BAM.

    • BrooklynBomber

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

Wait, she has clothes to talk about? Because I just couldn’t notice anything but that stunning bone structure and how fab she makes a pixie cut look.

    • mozzer0906

She looked fabulous and showed the ladies how it should be done

    • lrhoff

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

This is why short hair is so great on women who are stunning as her. All that hair just distracts from the natural beauty. Love this.

    • f_yeah_marie

    • jackie cohen

After I saw her, I was immediately depressed that I will NEVER be that beautiful, no matter what … She is drop dead gorgeous!

    • Cathy S

Her hair is just incredible. She looks so fabulous.

    • Annabelle Archer

Serene. Sexy. Classy. Effortless. Werq. Bitch.

    • formerlyAnon

I love that hair on her. I think they were wise to forego a necklace, but I’d have chosen slightly bolder earrings.

In any case, the WERQ is completely warranted.

    • http://twitter.com/lisledanielle Danielle Lisle

    • Kyle Crawford

best of the night, hands down. stunning

    • Little_Olive

She always looks stunning and, more importantly, poised.

The dress is very beautiful, it suits her to a T, hair and makeup are flawless… but does anyone think this is a bit “too Charlize”? I feel like I’ve seen this before and if WERKs are graded on a curve, I would want her for once to wear some color.

      • Jessica Goldstein

In 2000 she wore a tangerine Vera Wang that his yet to meet its equal. She can do it all!

        • Little_Olive

That’s right! I absolutely loved that dress.

      • DTLAFamilies

I googled her red carpet looks and she actually has worn a lot of different looks. I think we tend to remember the times she’s in a simple white dress because she looks so amazing in them.

    • kmk05

I see her face, and I just think of her (was it a sketch?) “Just think MURDER! And walk”. She’s flawless. I even like the bangles on both hands!

    • Stubenville

Nitpick – if only it were a color and hence not borderline bridal…

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josefina-Madariaga-Suárez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Not crazy about the hair (I’m not sure if it’s due to the white dress, but it looks a little bleached and two-toned), but I gasped when I saw her.

    • http://twitter.com/DarthJaeda Jaeda Laurez

Best look of the night, period.

    • Rand Ortega

That trip to the gym paid off.

    • Judy_S

She also looked so comfortable with the gown, aware of it as if it were part of her body, or maybe an essential bit of athletic equipment. That’s true elegance.

    • ashtangajunkie

      Stunning. As always.

    • msdamselfly

Her face and especially that hairdo do nothing for me

    • teensmom99

she’s gorgeous but I did not like this dress on her. It’s too low and it made her look amazon-sized in a not-great way.  Sorry guys.
      Call me a bitter kitten.

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

All I can see are shoulders, but they are very lovely shoulders.

    • http://twitter.com/KenyaJ121 NicKelly

      She is a goddess.

    • Hetha Innis

This and her white Tom Ford when she won for Monster’s Ball are my 2 favorite Oscar looks of all time.

    • sweetlilvoice

God, is it possible she’s a beautiful alien? Because her beauty isn’t human! Amazing.

    • BeeBeauNYC

Hair and makeup are FLAWLESS. The dress is still too bridal for me, even on her.

    • SistaT

My best dressed of the night.  SO FUCKING FLAWLESS.  Such an ice queen in looks but in demeanor seems so regular and not at all stuffy.  I love her.

    • sarah jacobs

Charlzie ( or her stylists) was right to forgo the expected big bling. This way the focus is all on her. You need a whole lot of something to pull this off, and she does have buckets full of that something. Big jewels would have put this into the realm of ordinary. The simplicity of presentation the shorn hair, the crisp lines of the dress the lack of big bling makes this a WERQ.

      • Jessica Goldstein

Yup. She chose a dress with elegant and flattering lines and then let her figure, composure, and face do all the heavy lifting. They were more than up for the task, and I think this look is perfect.

    • http://twitter.com/damienpida damien H.

the girl took my f************ breath away when i saw her. that’s all i can say.

    • Indigo54

OMG!  Now that’s what you call DROP DEAD GORGEOUS!

    • Monday1900

If she had worn a huge diamond necklace to match those beautiful bracelets she would have been my #1 last night–she still looks fabulous though.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

      She was absolutely stunning.

    • moja31

She was my favorite of the night, absolutely stunning.

    • Nancy Dunn

And this is how you do,low cut. No nips in danger of falling out. Elegant, sexy, gorgeous.

Can’t wait until you get to Heidi!!! The anti-Charlize.

    • http://twitter.com/patsyep Patsye Peebles

This was one of my absolute favorites!  Gorgeous!!

    • shelley514

My jaw dropped when I saw her.  And it’s still on the floor.  Bravo Charlize.  Bravo!!!!

    • xmixiex

stating the obvious: my god she is beautiful.

    • DTLAFamilies

She was so beautiful last night it hurt to look at her.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Agreed. Here’s to the genetically gifted.

    • IamstillAnonymous

    • http://twitter.com/wonderdivaEtsy wonderdivaEtsy

No disagreements that she gives amazing face and the hair looks great on her, but I think the perfection comes from how fabulously the dress fits, and how the bodice is revealing, but yet you aren’t distracted by nipples or incipient boob popping.  She looks beautifully feminine, yet strong and fierce.  The juxtapositions fit together so beautifully.

    • mjude

she cant even help herself.  just stunning

    • bhl_1123

      Hands down, best dressed.

    • http://twitter.com/SillyGrrlJen Silly Grrl

She’s so hot that I was all GOD DAMN HER when I saw her. It’s not fair that she’s still that hot with the super short hair.

    • jilly_d

I gasped when I saw her on the RC.  Absolute WERQ

    • Tamara Hogan

I have to give her a WERQ. Absolutely stunning.

    • sk8tfan

My sister and I gasped when we saw her. Breathtaking. And Heidi Klum should take note-this is how a thin woman with a boyish middle should dress to create the illusion of a small waist.

    • frannyprof

Agree. Gorgeous. I was planning on growing out my ‘do, but looking at Ms. Char is making me rethink my plan. Also, now I want to go blonde.

    • greyhoundgirl

She wasn’t walking –she was striding.  Owning the whole look and the whole stage.

    • http://twitter.com/delysia_lafosse Delysia LaFosse

Hitchcock Ice-Queen WERQ. The pixie cut looks fabulous on her too.

    • GorgeousThings

She was my pick for the best dressed on the RC.

    • ThaliaMenninger

The hair, the face, the jewelry, all perfection. But that dress did not work for me. It looks too stiff and thick somehow, like it’s made of polyurethane instead of fabric. Plus… A peplum? A peplum? And I am sick to death of the white dresses. So put me in the Ebeneezer Scrooge spot. I didn’t like it.

    • Lulu Lafurge

My only complaint is the rigidity of the top. Looked a bit like a plaster cast for her torso.

    • warnerave

      bow down bitches!! werq indeed!!

    • Zippypie

WERQ indeed!  This kitten is on the floor kowtowing.  And this is one of the few WERQs where I honestly didn’t think the dress was that spectacular but Charlize made me forget about that.  She OWNED it, WERQED it and was so stunning in that pixie…damn, woman!  (I secretly wanted her to squash Ryan Seacrest or melt him with her icy laser gaze.)

    • maggiemaybe

That pixie cut is ROCKING MY WORLD. Love it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=603005248 Jeff Warhurst

I hate the stiff Jetson’s peplum, but she is mesmerizing.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Hands down my favorite of the night. She looked INCREDIBLE. Yes, it was a white dress, but it beat out all of the other white dresses by a mile. WERQ, indeed.

    • http://www.facebook.com/jacoryd JaCory Deon

We all screamed “Bitch” at the tv, in the best possible way.  This, ladies, is how you do it!  She looks better here than when she won her own Oscar those years ago.

    • E. D.

    • Emily Wilkerson

ABSOLUTELY my favorite look of the night. Charlize Theron is a goddess.

      • Lilak

        Hands down!
AND to execute her dance number quite creditably.  AND to execute her presenting assignment with humor and poise.
        Dream girl.  And how.

    • MilaXX

She owned that hair and she owned that dress. Gorgeous full stop.

    • alyce1213

There are white dresses, and there’s Charlize in this white dress.
THAT’S how you rock a peplum.

    • bluefish

That is one gorgeous white dress and she’s definitely working the hell out of it.  She’s a wonderful actress — to me the most alluring and beautiful of the bunch — blows Angie out of the water — She’s got all the packaged heat of the redhead or the brunette but manages to convey it through the blonde prism.  I LOVE her and especially loved her reaction to the Boob Song last night.  She looked amazing.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

The close up of her face made me gasp. Amazonian goddess.

    • Qitkat

Aside from thinking this was Sharon Stone at first glance, I have come to realize Charlize could wear a phone book, and would still be one of the most beautiful women on the planet. The kind of icy that takes your breath away in the best way.

    • Mary229

Stunning.  I am digging that short hair so much on her.  She’s like Halle Berry that way.  Just wear the short hair and let your face do the work.

    • mhleta

She’s got my vote for most beautiful woman on the planet right now. No one can touch her for natural beauty. You barely have to do a thing to her to get her to this level of gorgeousness. She wasn’t even wearing underwear, for God’s sake! Seriously. ABC followed her down the red carpet and there was nothing between her ass and the dress except maybe a thong and it was spectacular. How many women can wear a white dress without being completely girded in foundation garments? Or if their hair isn’t exactly right, it ruins the look. She is legit, 100% authentic, roll-out-of-bed-and-hit-the-red-carpet-as-is gorgeous. AND SHE CAN DANCE AND ACT, TOO??

      • kimmeister

She started her career in ballet!

      • DTLAFamilies

There were pap shots of her with her buzz cut and natural salt-and-pepper hair color, no makeup and jeans and she was just as jaw-droppingly gorgeous as she was on Oscar night. And she always looks completely at ease with herself. Just amazing.

    • nosniveling

      what!! no backwards necklace?
      JK- she is awesome.

    • guest2visits

Very beautiful. With all the world swirling around her, Charlize looks like she’s in the center of a storm – or a Dior ad!

    • Tuneful54

I have to disagree with the raves. I think that Ms. Clone of Annie Lennox looks too washed out, and that white is not her color. Another color, and a good lip color, and it would have killed for me.

    • Call me Bee

It may be the haircut, but I think it’s more her attitude.  She’s bitchin’ and looks it.

    • DeTrop

Agree with you 100%.  She is absolutely fabulous.

    • SpillinTea

    • Elizabeth Silverstein

I shouted WERQ at my TV! I was so hoping that the uncles T and Lo would agree. You have trained me well! She looked STUNNING.

    • ChaquitaPhilly

SHE LOOKS GREAT and so does the dress!

    • http://profiles.google.com/ballinger.jl Jessica Ballinger

She calls to mind Annie Lennox, and I adore Annie.  Love this!

    • Sara__B

She looks extraordinary. I would have liked a bit more color to her lip, but that’s a minor quibble.

    • bertkeeter

CAPITAL WERQ! Only one thing I’d change…..have the train start lower and less of it. Would be modern perfection!

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    • ccm800

looks like a glittery body cast to me

    • TSkot

Seriously, what couldn’t she wear?  Loved her gown for the dance number, too.

Confession:  I love peplums.  But look at those BRACELETS!!!

    • a_liking

un f*cking believable! SHE LOOKS SO, SO BEYOND GORGEOUS. I can’t. the ultra-short hair is just – amazing. so unexpected of a ~beautiful woman at the Oscars~ which makes it even better.

That. Bone. Structure. Bowing the fuck down to this look.  Full Goddess.  And like that wasn’t enough, the dancing.  Sigh.

    • EEKstl

…AND she can dance like a dream.  Perfection.

    • anotherEloise

Freckled shoulders, too.   Look, Charlize and I have something in common!

She strikes me as a gorgeous woman that I would totally enjoy having beers with.  I love her.

    • Rick Aiello

Simply breathtaking.  Gorgeous.  Stunning.  I don’t know what else to say.

    • MattCooper27

      Stunningly beautiful!

    • unbornfawn

She brought it. On paper this is a boring look. But the fit, hair, make-up and her carriage makes it WERQ.

    • Trisha26

    • glennethph

She makes that dress look better than it really is.

    • Iroqhard

One of the few times the peplum didn’t make me want to gag. So striking. And I LOVE her hair. Fabulous!!

    • SRQkitten

I think it’s more like dress + wearer + venue + ATTITUDE. Miz Charlize is killin’ it here. My favorite look of the night, what is the superlative of WERQ?

    • MissAmynae

So much of this WERQ can be attributed to her extensive ballet training. Her carriage is impeccable, and effortless.

    • Cousin_Rose

My gorgeous long-haired DIL is thinking about getting her hair cut because of this image of perfection

    • LittleKarnak

THIS was the best dress (and best dressed) of the night.

Perfection…knowing what suits you well goes SO far in creating a ‘look’ rather than just an ‘outfit’.   She really nailed it here..as my husband said (in a bow-down-bitches kind of way), “she looks like she was carved from marble”.

Dress becomes fashion/stylish when worn by someone with THAT FACE and that hair.

Not just face, but BODY! She manages to look long and lean without being emaciated or disproportionate (Kerry Washington – and most of the rest, honestly -, your head now looks way too large for your teeny body). Sigh, I would hate Charlize if I wasn’t such a fan.

      She is divine.
