Oscars 2013: Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji

Posted on February 25, 2013

We wanted so badly to like this:

Octavia Spencer attends the 2013 Academy Awards in a Tadashi Shoji dress paired with Prada shoes, Lorraine Schwartz jewelry, and an Edie Parker clutch.

It’s a creamy confection of a dress, and the color looks great on her, but that’s about as far as we can go with the compliments. The big hair and all that volume at the neckline combine to make her look quite a bit older than she is. Looser, less “set” hair and a more standard neckline would’ve gone a long way. Even so, we’re not crazy about the way the skirt attaches; that line cutting right across her middle. Tadashi Shoji usually does really well by her, but this time, it’s just not working for us.

I don’t know, she looked like the pineapple whip of my dreams. I SHOUTED at the screen when E! said she was Viola Davis.

      • filmcricket

        Oh my God.

      • Catiline

Oh man, I raged at that too!

And it also pisses me off that Giuliana Rancic STILL cannot be bothered to learn the correct pronounciation of Tadashi Shoji’s last name.  It’s exactly like it’s spelled for god’s sake!

        • Sobaika

I was so elated that E! obviously was keeping her away from all the celebrities. I wonder how many of them had complained.

          • http://twitter.com/emilyf007 emily

Probably all. She’s horrible. Seacrest is just as bad. Too much idle talk. His ONE job is to ask “who are you wearing?” and he can’t even manage that. I wish he’d stayed a nobody. Ugh.

            • Little_Olive

The fact that he makes all that money while being responsible for the Kardashians is all kinds of wrong.

          • MaryAtRealityTea

She’s horrible! She chronically interrupts, has no sense of fashion, and spends the entire time quizzing them about dieting while talking over them. They all have to patiently standing there while they refrain from rolling their eyes and tell her to shut UP. It still baffles me how on earth she got her job.

            • Introspective

ive been trying to figure out who on earth decided that Giuliana was fashionable enough to comment on other people’s clothes???? she seems so run of the mill and uninspired to me. I think she’s got photos or some other dirt on some exec at E.

Kelly, as full of herself as she seems, at least knows fashion and seems to have an intellectual rather than a knee jerk response to celeb choices. Giuliana is annoying and has nothing to add most times except idiotic chatter, whether on the RC or on Fashion Police.

so glad to know Im not alone with being over her!!!

            • Sobaika

              Was never under her.

            • Little_Olive

I wouldn’t be that harsh but yes, shut this woman UP. It’s not so much about knowing fashion, it’s that she does not seem to have taste or independence to comment on others’ choices. I mean she seems blinded by the bling and the brands. Good thing she got rid of the extensions, though.

And her Pilates-rexic arms scare the hell out of me.

Seacrest does not deserve one drop of my saliva.

            • DinaSews

Horrible! but then I switched over to ABC and Kristen Chenowith was just as bad if not worse.  Compared EVERYTHING to herself.  She kept taking her shoes off to check her height and against the stars. Bradley Cooper even stooped down to help her back on with her show. Ugh.

            • Sweetbetty

Kristen C. has to have the most annoying munchkin voice in the entertainment industry.  And what was the deal with her taking off her shoes to compare her 4’11” against the other women?  They all seemed to be as confused as I was by her actions.

            • Kayceed

I loathe her. Is there anyone intelligent and witty capable of interviewing those celebrities? I didn’t see a one.

            • SassieCassy

tim gunn. didnt he do the red carpet for abc a while back?

            • Jecca2244

or bring in one of the fashion editors from one of the national magazines.

            • Sweetbetty

I was longing for Tim Gunn on that RC yesterday.

            • MK03

Nothing beats the off-brand ABC pre-coverage. Roshumba Williams described Robin Roberts’ (gorgeous) dark blue gown as “electric blue”, called Kelly Rowland’s dress “very Gone With The Wind” and tried to pass off Kerry Washington’s outfit as “Baroque.” I mean, really?? How hard is it to get a commentator who actually knows what they’re talking about??

            • e jerry powell

They’d have to re-hire Tim Gunn, and I don’t think they’re up for that after the way Revolution tanked.

          • http://twitter.com/lisledanielle Danielle Lisle

I did wonder why we didn’t see her for such a long time after Reese answered Guliana’s question about her hair.

            • Little_Olive

Could you enlighten me on that episode?

            • http://twitter.com/lisledanielle Danielle Lisle

Guilana wanted Ryan to ask Reese about how RW got her hair so shiny and bouncy and voluptious. Reese answered that pregnancy gave her those lovely locks, then we didn’t see Guilana for a solid half hour.

            • Sweetbetty

I’m not sure if the OP was thinking what I was thinking, but Guliana kept going on and on about the volume of Reese’s hair and even told they guy who would be speaking to Reese to ask her about it.  He didn’t and G. chimed in, interrupting his interview, asking R. about her hair.  R. attributed it to her just recently being pregnant and how your hormones cause your hair and skin to be especially lovely during pregnancy.  We all know about G’s well documented unsuccessful attempts to get pregnant and she shut right up after that.  In a way, I actually felt bad for her, except that she is so annoying in so many ways.

            • e jerry powell

I say she’s allowed to burn Guiliana at the stake if she wants to, but that’s just me.

          • Catiline

Giuliana being sequestered in that weird little room was hilarious, and yes, she gives fawning a bad name.  But Seacrest wasn’t much better, with the smarm up to 11.  I think a public access channel could’ve put together better coverage honestly.

        • http://twitter.com/lisledanielle Danielle Lisle

Same with Guliana calling Quvenzhané “Little Q”. Honey, it’s not endearing, we all know you can’t be bothered to learn how to pronounce it.

          • Sobaika

It’s not just Giuliana though! NO ONE was bothering with her name. How gross.

            • http://twitter.com/purpleprose78 purpleprose78

How would you pronounce it? If I were to guess based on the spelling, it would be Kwi-vin-zah-nee, but then I only read the name and am not required to speak on television.  If I was, I would call the child’s people and ask to make sure I don’t make an egregious errors like calling her Little Q on camera.

            • Sobaika

Kwa-venn-ja-nay is how it’s said, but I guess that is too much for entertainment journalists.

            • http://twitter.com/purpleprose78 purpleprose78

               Thanks. :D

            • e jerry powell

Everything is too much for entertainment “journalists.”

            • jennifromcali

That is EXACTLY how you pronounce it. Thank you!

            • SassieCassy

              but it is not.

            • Jecca2244

An AP reporter actually said to her doing an Oscars press conference he was just going to call her “Annie” and she corrected him and said no my name is Quvenzhane.

            • Catiline

Oh that is just gross.  I vote to just call that AP reporter Jackass.

            • CozyCat

She was a nominee.  If you’re a reporter–even for E!–you learn how to pronounce her name.  It’s your job.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

If the reporters could not handle her first name, then they should easily switch to calling her “Miss Wallis.”

        • ccm800

That always bothers me and I find it so disrespectful. Most names written in a different alphabet –  Asians, Indians, etc. are typically translated phonetically so the only reason someone can’t pronounce a name like that is because they cannot read! Add to it the name SHE has, she ought to be more attentive to such details.

          • editrixie

Not just that, but pretty much every article written about her since the movie first came out has spelled her name out phonetically. All you had to do was look it up.

      • InstaGratis

Yeah, I thought she looked fantastic and I did the Viola Davis HELL NO shout, too.

      • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

You and me both. Can you believe they did that?

      • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

        Seriously! WTF!

      • Toto Maya

I thought I was the only one who noticed that. Ridiculous.

    • http://smalltownbigwardrobe.com/ Catherine

If the skirt had been more streamlined, this would have been at least passable.

Eh, at least she nailed it last year when she won. That’s the year that matters.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I actually love that shape on her but don’t think the peachy colour is right.

      • Meg0GayGuys6

I agree… I really like that dress and I think she looks dreamy.  However, I can’t help but think bridal when I see a dress in this color.

      • Alyssa

I agree…I think this in a jewel tone color would have been gorgeous.

        • gsk241

I agree.  I like the dress on her, but the color just isn’t right…

        • http://twitter.com/DuBey2 Marie Fessler

Or the right shade of Gold or Silver to flatter her skin.

      • StellaZafella

Yeah, first impression here is to ask her how the bride is holding up. It’s not the dress itself that bugs but the color…

        should’a been….RED!

    • ccinnc

      I loved it!

      • 3boysful

         Me, too.

        • http://profiles.google.com/dorothymichael Dorothy & Michael n/a

           me three.

      • Vickiefantastico

Me too! I gasped when she came onscreen. I think she looked every bit the movie star she is.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kristy-Bartholomew/1034720856 Kristy Bartholomew

           Me too..Gawj!!!!!!!!!

      • eowyn_of_rohan

Yeah, I thought it was pretty wonderful.  Amazing color.

      • mshesterp

Me too!  I thought she looked quite lovely, loved the neckline.  Very fluffy and soft.  Not loving the hair, which aged her.  But overall I was a fan.

      • Lisa Dugan

        Loved it as well.  Beautiful!

      • DinaSews

Boy, me too! She looks soft and feminine.

      • http://twitter.com/emilyf007 emily

Me too! I thought TLo would as well for sure. Guess I was wrong about that one.

      • TheDivineMissAnn

Count me in.  She looks fab.

      • Kayceed

Yes, when she walked to the mike, she was a vision. Very beatiful. I loved the softness and the neck and skirt, with the fitted bodice. I think all this works.

      • mjude

so do i, i thought she looked so very pretty

      • Rand Ortega

Me, 8! The hint of shoulder, the way the gown accentuates her tiny waist, the regal princess hair, the singular impact of the earrings, the lightness of the entire palette– I loved it.

      • HomeOfficeGirl

I loved it too!  I think she was one of the few who really got it RIGHT last night – the soft dress and color soften up her whole look and the shape is way flattering.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZBFH32YG44LIIZYLSQPMBXMYCU Sarah

Yeah, I didn’t watch the Oscars at all (I just wait for TLo – I CANNOT stand the RC coverage, and I am bored to tears by awards shows) but I did happen to land on it for three minutes when she was announcing the best supporting actor, and I thought “Oh, So Pretty! Way TO GO!” And I understand people thinking the color is a tad bridal, but it would be less of a confection were it darker. It think it’s pretty with her skin.

      • MissAmynae

Me Seventy-Two!  Its just so soft and PRETTY. Love the hair.

    • RebeccaKW

I don’t really like the hair, and I wish the skirt fabric was different, but I think she looks pretty good.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Clydette-Wantland/673315286 Clydette Wantland

I thought she looked very pretty.

    • SistaT

I wore something quite similar to this to my 8th grade graduation.  Short and without the asymmetrical neckline, but same color and beading on the bodice.  Can’t accept a 12-year-old’s dress on a grown woman.

    • makeityourself

Good color, just too damn billowy.

    • TRSTL

I have to stick with “She looked pretty”.  I get the hair quibble and think a looser do would have been nice but the dress is really pretty and she looked happy to be wearing it.  And at least she didn’t have Melissa McCarthy hair….. god love her!

      • TAGinMO

Or a Melissa McCarthy dress! Mel should really get Tadashi’s number from Octavia as soon as she possibly can. This isn’t the best dress that Shoji has done for her, but I thought she looked very pretty and that the dress was flattering overall.

    • Introspective

i liked it. she looked shapely and the color is gorgeous on her.

i agree that the neckline went a shade too far with all that fabric, but overall the look still pleased my eyes. which is more than I can say for many a gown last nite.

    • Rachel Murray

Are the shoulders supposed to be asymmetrical?  I kept on wishing a handler would come up and pull the right one down a bit.  Beautiful dress, but not for her – and in fact, me wanting a whipped anything drink makes me wonder who could make this drink (err, dress) work.

      • DaringMiss

I actually think that the asymmetry works better than straight across which might have made her seem wider.

I liked the dress, especially the fitted bodice that highlighted her waist.

    • alyce1213

I love it, but maybe a little less skirt would be more flattering.  She can wear this color with her beautiful skin.
And you can tell she’s happy in it, which is so important — proudly showing off her newly-reduced figure, which looks curvy, trim and sexy.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I rarely disagree with you fellas but today I must. I though she looked spectacular. Classy as hell, and flat out lovely.

      • Polka_Dotty

I didn’t like the neckline, because it made her look too broad. She would have looked better if we had seen a long neckline, rather than exaggerated shoulders. She’s always impeccably dressed, though, and you don’t have to worry about “wardrobe malfunctions” like you do with some of the starlets.Anne Hathaway should have asked her for a consult.

    • Knightley

Gotta disagree with you guys on this one, I thought she was one of the best dressed.

    • http://www.facebook.com/kate.mccain.94 Kate McCain

True, it’s not perfect, but compare it to the tragedy that Melissa McCarthy, the other woman of (probably normal) size, wore and she looks fantastic!

      • TheDivineMissAnn

Yes, Melissa McCarthy’s choice was unfortunate.

    • afabulous50

I thought she looked great.  But I don’t have a fashion blog either…

    • MaryanneGirl

I completely agree. With this color it read as “first formal” instead of “Oscar winner”.  Also, I had ZERO recollection that she was carrying a clutch at all. I had no idea…that thing was the EXACT color of the dress. With a nudey/blush color, you could’ve really played with color accessories. Disappointed.

    • SewingSiren

I kinda liked this one. At least I like the tulle wrap around the upper arm and the pearl studded bodice. I also like the bakelite purse. The fake bangs I’m not keen on though.

    • kmk05

I think the shape is amazing! It’s princessy but suits her well. It doesn’t obliterate her waist or her hips, and is quite flattering. The colour could have been better and I’m not a fan of the hair, but the makeup is great. I don’t mind the neckline. I don’t know, I quite like it! When else would you get to dress like a princess if you’re not 12 or Taylor Swift?

    • Anathema_Device

I like it on her. It is so soft, flowy, and feminine. And I like what she said about Tadashi Shoji.

    • http://twitter.com/BattyMamzelle Cate Young

YES. It makes her look so much older than she is! Top that of with the fact that she looks like she lost a ton of weight, maybe something less voluminous might have been better. We KNOW Tadashi can dress her, but someone dropped the ball here. Also, hate the hair :(

    • teensmom99

As, ahem, a not small woman myself, I was thinking about how few options there are for the not small (no body snarking intended). She’s done such a great job of dressing for her body and  I think there just that many options out there. I saw this as an attempt not to wear the same old same old–but it was not great.  Not horrible, just not the high standard we’ve come to expect.  Loved the assymmetrical tulle–the rest of this might work better on someone tall. And of course, the color is great.

    • tallgirl1204

I thought she looked beautiful.  But I have no basis for that other than reaction.  On close examination, it appears that the neckline is held up by illusion netting, of which I am rarely a fan (or else she has a very odd tan line).  But for the “big look,” for t.v. and the long shot, this is fabulous.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I thought she looked softly pretty and a little regal. She seemed comfortable with HOW she looked, too. Great color, love the asymmetric netting at the neckline. Good earrings. Thumbs up.

    • Funkykatt

I thought it was too fairy tale or teen dream for someone over 14.

    • http://twitter.com/omg_dora Dora K.

I thought she looked beautiful in it. It’s a mature style, but she’s not 20, and the shape and the color are great on her.

    • Frank_821

I actually liked it and continued to prove the bigger gals can be just as chic and fabulous. She was leaps and bounds ahead of poor Melissa McCarthy and more enticing than Adele

    • sablehunter

That nail polish is all wrong and the manicure looks about a week old

      • DinaSews

Is it old? I assumed it was that new ‘reverse’ french polish where they rim your cuticles with a lighter color.

        • sablehunter

Oh, thanks!  Shows how much I know about nail fashion.  Can’t say I’ll be following that trend, but I supposed it’s better than talons.

    • EditKitten

(Damn Disqus — I was trying to agree with Knightley.)

    • mshesterp

Argh, Melissa McCarthy…she refuses to wear anything that is even close to flattering.  Last night was a gray sack.  A gray sack!  Grr.

    • Judy_S

I thought she looked fabulous in this.  Both sexy and princessy. Not sophisticated, I guess, but really lovely anyway.

    • formerlyAnon

I really liked this on first glance. I became indefinable dissatisfied the longer  I saw her in it, but eventually I blamed it on my usual dislike of frou-frou-ness, though this was admirably not-frou-frou for something so fluffly.  She obviously felt good about it and was definitely wearing it, not letting it wear her, though.

    • CoCoTutt

The hair is what killed it for me.  Bangs = NO!

    • Little_Olive

Nah. Not the color -does not become her skin-, nor the confection. It’s kinda what you dream of wearing to your wedding/prom when you are little.

      In other words, David’s Bridal.

    • PastryGoddess

      I disagree,

I thought she looked fabulous in the dress

    • Sobaika

It’s very 80s – the hair and the silhouette. It’s all reading as a very bad prom dress.

      She looks very pretty, considering.

    • Judy_J

My first impression was that she looked lovely, and I still stand by that.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VA5XLSF3QRELSC3MUFSXLP4EIE rebecca

      Way too bridal.

    • Christy Cricow

So surprised at the criticisms; I thought she looked amazing, and that the dress was quite flattering. She looked gorgeous, and like she FELT gorgeous!

    • Janet B

I think Octavia looks beautiful in this dress.
I think her bangs are too heavy but that’s my only complaint.

    • bluefish

She looked great!  Elegant and relaxed — Good dress with a flattering cut and color and I loved the hair, make-up, and earrings.  It’s nice to see someone looking good without appearing to try so hard.  Maybe if the Oscars were a bit less about all the super fabu gowns, we’d get a better show.  It just seems to go from bad to worse.  I only watch because of the dresses and would love to be able to tune in without having to spend all night long crinching in embarassment. I, for one, didn’t need to hear about Affleck’s marital difficulties even though I was delighted to see him take the prize.

    • zelavie

I disagree – I think she looks lovely.  The shape of the dress is doing such good things for her body – giving her the flowy, princessy feel while still defining her in the middle.  I wish there was more color variation in the accessories, but the dress is great.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

Couldn’t disagree more. I love that neckline on her and the dress is supremely flattering.  The bangs are a bit much, but so what? The rest looks so lovely, that such a minor detail doesn’t matter.

    • Beardslee

I heard her say that she wanted a Cinderella dress to cap off a Cinderella year.  That makes this dress more understandable to me.

      • mmc2315

Absolutely.  It is very Cinderella!  I think she looks great.  True, not my favorite look of hers, but she’s lovely.

    • Tatiana Luján

I can’t put my finger on why this looks like a cheesy debutant dress to my eyes. Maybe if she had picked between the tulle on the shoulders and the tulle of the skirt this would look like a grown woman’s dress.

    • Terrible_Person

I actually think she looks pretty, the hair is my only quibble.

    • http://www.facebook.com/jon.kahrs.9 Jon Kahrs

One part of me really liked this. Another part of me looked up at my popcorn ceiling to see what was missing.

    • Nariya

I have to disagree. I love it, especially the shoulders. It’s a little old-school elegant.

    • nannypoo

This would be a beautiful dress for her without the shoulder fluff. It seems to fit well and the amount of volume in the skirt is princessy without being too much. A different shoulder treatment would have made this a WERQ for me.

    • jennmarie19

I can’t believe I am about to disagree with TLo, but I thought she looked really lovely.

      • meowing

At first I thought she was lovely, too, until I read their line about it being an aging look, then Goggled her age–she’s only 42.  So, I must demur to the Experts.  Would have guessed her much older, based on this look.  It’s not a disaster, but it would be fun to see her in something a little edgey.  However, I’d still like Tadoshi to get hold of Melissa McCarthy!

    • sweetlilvoice

Love her expression in the last photo!

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

      Thanks a bunch,
      But I’m not getting married–
      Go have lunch,
      ‘Cause I’m not getting married–
      You’ve been grand,
      But I’m not getting married–
      Don’t just stand there,
      I’m not getting married–
      And don’t tell Paul,
But I’m not getting married today.

    • bxbourgie

Meh.  Meh meh meh.  I need her to give me MORE.  The dress is cute but boring.  The jewelry is boring, the hair is boring, the makeup is boring, even her manicure is boring.

    • belfebe

I actually loved this look, so sue me.

    • Daktari100

It reminds me of a cupcake…and I love cupcakes!

    • decormaven

I think if it were a stronger color, I would be more behind this look. But I do love the way she carries it.

    • margaret meyers

I am a fan of this look.  Yes, it’s a little old-school, but I think she looks very pretty here.

      • RedRaven617

I agree. I thought she looked really beautiful.

    • Indigo54

So mother of the bride.  Most unfortunate.

    • MaryAtRealityTea

I couldn’t tell if it was intentionally harkening back to the 50’s/early 60’s time period or was just a misstep. The biggest drawback was that the look was aging and mother of the bride. I do think the color was pretty, but I wish it were a little brighter and less frothy. It’s like an Orange Julius in dress form. It might have been much better in a brighter hue.

I think a lot of celebs get performance anxiety at the Oscars. Completely understandable but a shame.

    • ashtangajunkie

I did not love either the business at her neckline or her hairstyle, but I still feel that she looked absolutely lovely. What a beautiful colour on her.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1832126583 Mary Lauer

I love this. So clean, and cultured and soigne. I think she looks wonderful.

    • egl48

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Oh I think this would have been perfection without the confection around her arms. I realize its there to hide her arms, but embrace them girl because as a one strap this would have been a knock out!

    • Nancy Dunn

I actually love her hair and make-up, but the gown is too princess’s and full for her. Out.

    • eclare

I think its reasonably flattering on her in terms of shape, but the overall effect is old-fashioned and matronly.

    • http://twitter.com/SillyGrrlJen Silly Grrl

I didn’t like it at first, but it grew on me later.

    • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

I absolutely love this dress. It flatters her completely. I would love to rock something similar. I do agree about the hair.

    • http://twitter.com/CestMoiGab Gabrielle Rosenfeld

I thought she looked gorgeous in that dress. Your points about hair I get but the dress is perfect for her.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=745465637 Nellie Wilson

I actually gasped out loud when I saw her – I think she looked absolutely stunning!

      • samo_samo

I did too! I think she looks beautiful.

    • stubbornthoughts

Agree with you guy 100%. It looks…I dunno – skewed?

    • Kimberly Southern-Weber

You are cray cray – she looks beautiful.

    • Monday1900

I wish it were a slightly different color and that the skirt didn’t have that straight line across her hips.  If the tulle overskirt covered the length of the dress and the embellishment trailed off over the hips more subtly I think this would have been a winner.  Still, she looked a million times better than poor Melissa McCarthy–what a disaster that dress was.

    • Cathy S

Wrong! She looks gorgeous. So there.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/2LIE6ISFQUBIAO7OB6U5TAVXXQ Depot'er

loved this….didn’t notice the really beautiful clutch before tho….fascinating.first thing- what IS that fabric above the skirt? love the texture. I think the neckline is perfect on her…very effortless.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PCARAOJSL553GBBPQSLRYD5REE L.

She usually looks so sassy… definitely an aging lool.

    • LJCdoc

I agree with the majority of bitter kittens – she looks great!

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

Love her makeup. I don’t think the color of the dress is all that great, either. She’s a silver/grey gal.

    • barbarienne

I don’t agree the dress is aging. She’s 2 years younger than I am, and I think she looks pretty damn good. A lot better than many other stars her age. I agree with your points about the hair, though. Less structured hair would have been better.

I’m largely unbothered by the attachment point of the skirt, since it is well below her waist. But I think it would have been better to drop it another inch or two, let the bodice do more for her hips.

    • bertkeeter

Her makeup could have added a little more pop to this milk toasty color….Agree about hair….too MOB!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I loved it. I’ll give you the hair, but I thought the neckline made the dress!

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

I dont’ know. She looks pretty. Yes, a little old lady for her but then again, maybe she just wanted to try something different. She always sticks to the same type of dress and you can’t blame a gal for wanting to look like a princess every once in awhile. Not my choice but she still looks good.

    • greyhoundgirl

I think she looked absolutely beautiful.

    • Drew Macaulay

I think this looked better on camera than in stills. Plus, her makeup was really nice, a major improvement over many past appearances.  I kind of want this dress as my wedding dress, but it didn’t seem bridal when I saw it last night.

    • Zippypie

I didn’t care for this.  Octavia always looks so good in saturated colors and this washed her out and looked bridal (again – so many of these on the carpet!).  I think it would have been vastly improved without that frouf around the shoulders and if she had a slightly deeper lip.

It seems a trend is this faint lip or no lip color.  Ick.  It’s really bumming me out.

    • http://www.facebook.com/ann.verwiebe Ann VerWiebe

I liked it – at least she looks lovely and it fits her. Not like the monstrosity that Melissa McCarthy was wearing.

    • Wellworn

I think she could have made more flattering choices too, but it’s hard to deny the power of the princess dress.   I love that little purse though, reminds me of the lucite purses I used to collect.

    • jw_ny

ooohhh…I rather like this dress on her.  I hate her wig tho.

    • Katie_Katie

I loved this! I thought she looked ethereal.

    • http://twitter.com/nuanc Nancy SM Waldman

I love this on her. So soft and curvy. I know it’s not a vote, but I think it’s IN.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

She gets a WERQ from me.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_RDEDI3ONWSVDQS5GXKKBIML3H4 Chase

This is way too Peaches ‘n Cream Barbie for my taste.

      • kimmeister

I always loved Peaches ‘n Cream Barbie and never got one . . .

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_RDEDI3ONWSVDQS5GXKKBIML3H4 Chase

I loved my Peaches ‘n Cream Barbie. She couldn’t hold a candle to Ms. Pink ‘n Pretty, but she was a fierce bitch all the same.

    • surfergirl70

I disagree.  I think she looks beautiful, and I felt like the dress was flattering.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

It’s ok, but considering that she can do so much better than “ok,” this was a disappointment. It reads as too mother of the bride. Octavia usually embraces her curves, and doesn’t dress quite so matronly.

    • Coco Cornejo

The dress has a vintage 50s vibe. Perhaps if it hadn’t been made by a contemporary designer…

At any rate, I’m loving all the expressions she’s making. The last three photos especially. It’s like she’s looking around to see who else is in on the joke. ;-)

    • E. D.

I don’t mind the hair or the neckline, but totally right about where the beading ends.  Maybe an irregular shape (inverted U) would be better.

    • http://www.facebook.com/jacoryd JaCory Deon

She looks nice if matronly.  Something about it is making her look older than what she is (can’t figure out if it’s the makeup, the hair, or that color of tulle) and she needs a bracelet, but def one of the best dressed big girls last night.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JSGAZPEESHQT47ATH55GNOHHBY Erin

Oooooh, matchy clutch.  She’s got lip color on, though!  Yay!

    • MilaXX

I wasn’t crazy about the hair, but I liked this. My only quibble is it reads bridal to me.  As if she had it dyed to hide the fact that it’s a wedding dress. Still she obviously felt pretty in it, so I give her points for that.

    • kimmeister

The clutch is pretty cute, although it does remind me of fancy bar soap.

    • Qitkat

Did not like, the uncolor, the volume, especially at the shoulders which just made me think, now Octavia, just twirl around three times while we *arrange* this tulle just so, the earrings matching the bodice. Shoji has done much better by her.

    • Sally Brownson

I liked it. I also liked her makeup, it’s gorgeous!

    • guest2visits

She was quite pretty on tv; but I think the chiffony bundle would have been better as a wrap/scarf, or used only for the sleeves.
The hair could have been styled a abit looser or touseled, no bangs.

    • Mary229

I don’t love the dress but I feel like her face looks absolutely beautiful here.  That lipcolor is so pretty on her!

    • Bratcatbuddy

I’ll respectfully disagree, what were you boys drinking?  Octavia looked stunning head to toe, Tadashi Shoji knows how to design for real women, the dropped waist skirt gives her a beautiful silhouette and the big hair comment, really?  I guess the lady in black behind Octavia in the seventh photo would fit the bill with, “Looser, less set hair.”

    • BuffaloBarbara

I loved this one, honestly.  I didn’t think the dress was aging.  Not crazy about the hair, but the dress is fab.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AJLOQGMSCMG5KS6OIVJSWATEJQ Doreen

I didn’t watch last night. Award shows annoy me and I know I’ll get to see all the fashion the next day in a lot of places. But looking at these pictures, I think she looks gorgeous. In fact, it’s one of my favorite looks. Maybe she looked different in motion?

    • http://riley-merrick.livejournal.com/ JP

I love the mother-of-pearl clutch. But what gets me about the dress is the neckline. I kept wanting to reach through my screen and straighten it up!

    • Lilak

Wasn’t crazy about the gown on the RC, but I think it redeemed itself onstage – especially in motion, but even at the mic.

    • DeTrop

Aw. She just dropped 20 lbs and you can definitely see definition between bust and waist.  I thinks she’s a gem.
      Thumbs up from me.

    • ChaquitaPhilly

I thought she looked lovely last night and the photos confirm my impression.

    • cleep1000

You are crazy. She looked stunning.

    • Sara__B

Too bridal (or maybe mother-of-the-bride) for my tastes, but she looks pretty.

    • YayaGurl

Now that you point it out she does look older but I think she places second in the big gal division.  Queen Latifah coming in first and Adele and Melissa McCarthy tied for “WTF?”.  As a big girl, Octavia Spencer makes me feel like there ways to dress my body without looking like a wrapped myself in a circus tent.

    • MintaHallWriter

actually, while the photos are not great of her, on TV last night, she looked beautiful.  I have to say this probably worked better in person than in photos.  I liked it overall.

    • marilyn

I like this dress on her.  her figure is what it is, and she does not want to wear black covered by shawls for her RC appearances.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

The hair is a little matronly, but she looked so happy.  I think she looks great.

    • mhleta

Hmm. I really like this, but then I read your critique and I agree there is room for improvement. A cute little bob haircut would have been better than this wedding hair. But It is a gorgeously frothy dress. I put this at a 7 with potential to be a 10.

    • TSkot

Lose the chiffon/tulle/whatever skirt and keep the bodice fabric flowing south into an elegant column and this would have been a WERQ

    • Zyxomma

No, Octavia. It’s the Academy Awards, not senior prom.

    • Beverly Kozma

      She looks gorgeous.

    • LaSylphide

Hair has to go, but otherwise – beautiful. It’s great to see a plus-size woman letting out her inner ballerina, and doing it this successfully.

    • http://twitter.com/MarfMom Maya

everything you said, plus she matched her earrings and purse to the dress.

    • andreawey

I don’t know….I kind of like the cotton candy neckline and the dropped waist……guess that’s why I don’t get the big bucks……

    • EEKstl

I liked the tulle neckline on her and had it beaded all the way down I could have gotten behind it but…not my fave OS/TS moment.

    • Amenaneri

Well, I thought she looked fabulous, and I disagree about the waistline.  It didn’t cut across her middle–I thought the dropped waistline was placed perfectly, and the way the dress molded perfectly to her waist gave her a lovely shape.  And I liked the visual interest of the asymmetrical shoulder wrap/puff garnish.  Perhaps the hair was a little complicated, but overall, I thought she killed here.

    • Kate4queen

I thought it was lovely and soft and complimentary. But what do I know? LOL

    • Pterodactyl111

      I like it a lot.

    • e jerry powell

Well, you know, all the Help are completely interchangeable…  *scoff*

I was even more annoyed by Seacrest’s interview with Kerry Washington (who played it like a pro, by the way).

      • editrixie

Oh god. What did he say? I was traveling this past weekend, and though I was able to have a little Oscars party in my hotel room, it pretty much means I can’t hear and see the other awful stuff around that with the limited access to … well, everything.

        • e jerry powell

It wasn’t anything offensive (well, not any more than his usual douchetastic self). Kerry Washington looked fabulous, right? He’s talking to her on the red carpet at the Oscars (granted, the pre-show on E!, but still, the Oscars are on ABC) and asks her absolutely nothing about Scandal, even though she brought it up at least twice (good company girl that she is). The Gladiators on line had a shit fit about it, but hey, it’s Ryan Seacrest, so…

    • http://twitter.com/Honey604 Marilyn Johnson

I thought this was a beautiful dress and it fit her very well. The soft asymetrical neckline provided interest and texture.  And you didn’t like the way the skirt attached? I don’t see anything wrong here. Actually the molded middle gave shape and the skirt a lovely gracefulness. Good color too.  You’re way too hard on Ocavia’s look, T and L!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stacy-Pershall/1024689145 Stacy Pershall

I loved this one!  One of my favorite dresses.  But I do wish she’d worn her hair down.  It was too harsh and staid for such a fairytale gown.

    • appliquer

Have to disagree – I love this dress and how it looks on her.

    • Ashleigh Weatherill

It’s a little mother of the bride to me…the color is great though.

    • cteeny21

I admit, it’s not fashion forward, but I thought she looked great.

    • poggi

I liked this on her. Pretty and not the same cut as her other gowns.  Not my favorite but she looked pretty and it showcases her figure nicely.

    • Louise Bryan

I beg to differ; I think she looked amazing.

    • peachy

i liked the dress quite a bit. for me, it was her arms that appeared most unattractive. i didn’t mind the full skirt, the fluff at the neckline, etc…but…but… i wasn’t digging the arms. love miss O, though!

      • Anniebet

Um, women of size have arms that go with their body. It comes with the territory. Expecting long sleeves on large women all the time is just, well.. unrealistic. Her lovely skin is velvety. If you love her, love all of her.

        • peachy

*glances at own turkey wing arms* yes, unfortch I am aware of the size of larger women’s arms. but as my Gram used to say …. “If it doesn’t look nice, don’t stick it out on the front porch.”  my arms are not my best feature, so i do not choose to highlight them. i feel the same about miss O — not yer best feature for highlighting. i do love all of her hun, just selective about which parts to highlight!

        • peachy

a re-read of my response made me think it sounds a lil snarky. it wasn’t meant that way at all :)

    • BazoDee

I think she looked lovely. I also think she’s showing off a svelter figure these days and she seem quite pleased and confident with the whole look.

    • http://www.lifeinspice.com/ rose88

I thought she looked stunning.  The hair is a little bit severe, but everything else is perfection.

    • http://www.facebook.com/RocketStarling Ashley Ellen Wilson

I LOVE this look on her :) well done Octavia

    • NCDFan

      I like it

    • chitowndg

I thought she looked great on TV.  Maybe not so much in the still pictures.

    • Trisha26

She looks lovely – was one of my faves of the night!

    • Noelle Haland

I can see where you’re coming from about the line where the skirt attaches, but I still think overall, she looks really quite lovely. I actually really like her hair, and her makeup and accessorizing are really beautiful.  I’m wondering if this color looked better in person…?  I would have liked to see her in a richer color in this dress, but I still think she looks great.

    • Anniebet

Sorry TLo, I think you got this one wrong. She is divine – dress, hair, makeup, and jewelry. Those earrings! She was in my top 10.

    • Cousin_Rose

She looks lovely. Color, shape hair all looked great to me.

    • neofashionista

      i Loved this on her
I also think it would have looked great on Melissa McCarthy in like a navy or cranberry or some kind of color

    • quiltrx

I really kind of love the beading on the bodice, though.  Maybe a slightly ‘dropped’ waist would have looked better, or maybe an icicle-ish transition between the bodice and skirt?

And that clutch is SO perfect that I’m kind of impressed that it matches so perfectly (instead of complaining about it LOL).

    • http://twitter.com/amndad amanda lynn

she’s so cute in the last photo.

    • naomiow

      I think she’s a slightly older Cinderella :)
& she looks like she lost some weight

    • libraangel

I actually like this dress on her very much. And I love that creamy white also

    • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

Funny, I thought the dress was too girlish.  I do love the big hair, I just wish the skirt was absurdly full so as to make the big hair seem more congruent.  Oh well.

    • Toto Maya

Was anyone watching the station that displayed “VIOLA DAVIS” on the screen when she arrived? I don’t remember what channel it was, we were flipping between several. I was like, REALLY?
