Oscars 2013: Nicole Kidman in L’Wren Scott

Posted on February 25, 2013

This is one of those dresses that looked totally different to us in pictures vs. on TV.

Nicole Kidman attends the 2013 Academy Awards in a L’Wren Scott gown paired with Fred Leighton jewelry.

L’Wren Scott Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Kelly Gale

We do so love when Nicole goes dramatic. It suits her looks so much better than they airy-fairy pastel-colored fluff she sometimes finds herself wandering toward. But we’re seeing all kinds of details in the daylight that we didn’t notice last night. That odd cluster of gold sequins right at her waist that looks a little like a Batman symbol… the overdone swirl motif at the bottom…the heaviness of the straps … the big gold jewelry for a look that has quite enough gold in it already – these things pull and tug at our urge to give her snaps and shout “WERQ!” at her. We still think she looks amazing – and all of the things we listed don’t bother us that much on their own – but there’s definitely more of a feeling today that there’s maybe one or two too many elements going on.

Still, she looks sexy, womanly, and head-turning. Can’t really complain too much about that.

I find myself wondering where she’s hiding her utility belt.  You know that she’s carrying a Bat-a-rang somewhere.

    • Jessica O’Connell

Batgirl formal wear, by Wayne Enterprises!

      • BuffaloBarbara

And that’s what makes it cool, man.  Especially since we know she was all obsessed with Batman a while back, when he was played by Val Kilmer…

  • drdirection

hard to get past the batman symbol

    • CommenterFormerlyKnownAsR

now I can’t un-see it!  But I agree with others that this is the best she’s looked in ages.

  • Stubenville

She crossed the line into costume, I’m afraid.

  • Beverly Kozma

    I think she looks fanTAStic.

    • gabbilevy

      Bat-tastic?

    • Donald Wannagat

I do, too. She’s one of the few women who actually makes the gown look better than it did on the runway model.

  • Maluca

I think it’s the best she’s looked in a really long time.

  • Funkykatt

She looked great, amazing, gorgeous and I am so not a fan of hers but I couldn’t stop gasping at how beautiful she looked.

    • Louise Bryan

Mostly agreed, but I am a fan of hers.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

LOL, Batman Symbol – I can’t not see it!!! And I seriously don’t like her hair.

  • http://www.facebook.com/fiddlecub Kevin VanOrd

Unequivocal love. She doesn’t have a warm presence, so I love when she gets sleek and shiny. She looks like a movie star here, and that’s a look I can get behind.

    • leave_Blake_alone

      agree 100%

  • http://twitter.com/uyeahu Michelle Wilson

She looked more relaxed last night than I’ve seen her look in a long time. When she’s relaxed and smiling she lights up the room no matter what she’s wearing.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

Yeah, and I thought it was cute that Keith picked this dress out for her … it has kind of a rocker chick vibe to it.

  • oldbobbydraper

i’m just glad it’s not a pale neutral color. the bar is so low for her that way.

  • http://www.drunkenhousewife.com/ DrunkenHousewife

She is one of the great clothes hangars of all time.  Seriously, she looks better than the model did in that.  And anyone else would look sort of pregnant with that bat shaped thing placed there.

  • hughman

The Little Mermaid in an oil spill. Tho I would have given anything to see her work the cape and the faux-tilla.

    • Little_Olive

  • schadenfreudelicious

can we complain about Keith’s hi-lites??…

    • charlotte

       We should.

    • NC_Meg

His flat iron abuse bothers me more than the highlights…ok, no. They both bother me. Nicole, do something about this.

      • schadenfreudelicious

that is indeed some egregious use of a flat iron.

    • TRSTL

His hair is always just the worst……. I really can’t believe she hasn’t been able to say “Honey? STOP with the bad “Palm Springs Gay” hair.  I already dealt with one husband with those rumors…..”

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=517525210 Erika Schultze

The swirls at the bottom make me think of a Klimt painting.

    • Deac82

That was exactly the inspiration of her collection.  From Tim Blanks’ review of her FW  ’13 collection on Style.com (I would just link to it, but they take a while to get approved”:

“Her inspiration was the artist Gustav Klimt’s gilded depictions of his
obsessive love for the Viennese socialite and saloniste Adele Bloch-Bauer. Scott identified. “I’m as in love with what I do as Klimt was in love with Adele.”

Obsession has always been a distinguishing characteristic of Scott’s
collections—the eye for detail, the attention to cut, the razor-sharp
restraint. What was new this time was the sense that she has lost
interest in restraint. “Dreaming of decadence,” was the way she
described her state of mind in the show notes. And Klimt offered the
perfect visual co-relative. His swirling patterns were printed on coats
and capes, his embossed textures were duplicated in extravagant
jacquards and brocades, and a handful of fishtail evening dresses
brought his paintings to life. The coiling serpents seemed especially
ready for a red-carpet snake pit.”

  • StellaZafella

I love the look, even the Batman symbol…the sequins are so dark and close together you can tell EXACTLY how many lights were aimed at her….Keith could see to comb his hair in her tummy – if he ever combs his hair.

    • TRSTL

Skip combing and just shave it all off.  Start over, without the unfortunate “highlights”….

  • imperfectlaura

To me, there are just a few too many elements going on with this look.  I love the direction of the look, especially for Nicole, but I don’t love the actual look.

  • carpediva

I thought Batman at first too… but settled on Chevrolet logo!

  • jetpackdino

On camera this dress looked beautiful, but the still photos make it seem like a Vegas lounge singer gown.  The close-ups are lovely though.

  • l_c_ann

She has SO still got it.

  • Annabelle Archer

    I’m conflicted.

  • BarniClaw

    Oil spill.

  • tereliz

I think all those elements that you’re not loving would be mitigated enough into a WERQ if not for the batsignal. That just made me shake my head, because I love the shape of the dress and the detailing at the hem. SO pretty. But then you get to the midsection where she’s hiding her batarang… Not good.

Her head looks fab, though. Luckily her hairdo survived being removed from the bat-cowl.

  • bluefish

Bet this looked awesome in person and managed to photograph less well.  Still like it and loved her hair, more relaxed face, and make-up, and am happy to see her with a guy who seems to really be into her.   Really love the shape of the Gunsmoke hottie dress and the beautiful details on the bottom half of the skirt.   Main thing:  She looks happy and real.

  • BeeBeauNYC

She looks like a new superhero – Vertigogirl – the swirls at the bottom of her dress start to turn, enlarge and overtake her enemies, and they collapse from dizziness. Her handcuffs are in her waist utility belt.

  • mjude

i thought she looked great when she presented an award.

    • makeityourself

I did too.  Actually, I was surprised at how gorgeous she looked when she presented.  Too bad the director didn’t give us more of a long-shot as she approached the mic.  Then we could have appreciated the bottom of the dress more.

  • http://twitter.com/lisledanielle Danielle Lisle

The makeup is youthful and fresh, but I’m not sure I can get behind the bat symbol.

  • Sobaika

FAN-TAS-TIC! She always turns it out.

  • teensmom99

Yup.  And a little creeped out by the Botox.  Too sad that she feels she needs it.

  • Introspective

all of the new objections in the clearer light of monday pics do present dilemmas for me too TLo. but in general, she looks poured into the dress. the fit and the sequins are just amazing.

overall she looks way better here than many of her RC appearances of late. so Im gonna go with liking it. a lot.

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I didn’t see the Batman logo until I saw these photos.  On the red carpet it all just looked like glitter, and of course that extra, completely unnecessary detail is not seen in the waist-up seat shots and podium shots.  I like the swirls on the bottom.  The bracelet is the item she should have taken off when she looked in the full-length mirror by the front door.  It’s just superfluous.  Love the earrings and the way they “hid” in the tendrils of hair by her face.  She looked so fab I can almost not see the gnome standing next to her.

  • marilyn

The stringy hair bugs me.  Was that the trend?  Who could have possibly thought that it was a good idea?  Nicole would look good in a trash bag with holes for her arms, head and legs.  This dress of course looks good on her, but I think the color is a little severe for her porcelain skin.   I would have liked a softer color for the dress.

  • jonnyf8

She said that Keith made the final decision on which dress.  After watching him in his new gig as an American Idol judge I have to say i think she’s the luckiest girl in the world.  Not only is he cute but he’s the funnest, sweetest guy in the room.

    • terpsichory

Well, considering that the other guys in the room are Randy Jackson and Ryan Seacrest that’s not particularly difficult.
But I agree, he comes across as very likable.

  • kimmeister

I totally didn’t even see the gold swirls at the bottom last night.  It’s certainly striking, but I don’t like how her bust is heaving over the top of the bodice.  I do love her earrings though.

  • BrooklynBomber

Me, too – I missed all that detail. I love the swirlies at the bottom, but I didn’t see them at all on tv.

  • Angela_the_Librarian

Maybe she’s paying homage to her role in Batman Forever! Seriously though, apart from the utility belt thingy I thought she looked fantastic.

  • Valdri8

What is up with Keith’s pants?

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

What’s up with the lifts in his shoes? She’s 3′ taller than him, did he really think that inch was going to make a difference?

  • Lilithcat

Who’s the twerp with her?  Honest to god, what is wrong with these guys, showing up on the red carpet looking like they just finished cleaning the basement?

  • Judy_S

I love her Klimt Utility Belt.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Another one of my favorite looks. I’m just now noticing the Batman symbol at her waist, but honestly, it doesn’t detract. I think everything is gorgeous here. And I LOOOOOVE the swirl motif at the bottom.

  • Rrroza

Impressive dress, translating Gustav Klimt’s motifs and colors into fabric and embellishment.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

Interesting way of looking at it!

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

Clashing golds (the earrings vs the dress) bother me because one gold always comes out looking cheap. The earrings look inexpensive against the dress – brassy – which they are surely not.
Also, Batman was the first thing I thought as I scrolled down so thank you for that validation, TLo. Also because I watched Batman Forever this weekend, probably.
Sidenote: Keith Urban, your hair is terrible and your highlights don’t help.

  • barbarienne

The jewelry is forgivable. I love the swirls at the bottom.

The bat logo is INSANE. Did no one say to L’Wren, “Hey, are you making this gown for Batgirl?”

  • siriuslover

Yes, it does look like the bat symbol. But va va voom! She looks gorgeous.

  • Qitkat

While she looked really pretty, I hate to say that this dress has a scale-ly look to me, rather like she just emerged from the depths of the sea with some oily detritus caught in it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1248212910 Jessie Melcher Brown

I wish she would let her hair go back to its natural red, the blond is so washed out on her.

    • makeityourself

These days her natural state is entirely grey to white.

  • Judi Townsend

With she would have worn the cape – but that would have really taken it into Batman territory

  • nannypoo

I like it. They both need to deal with their hair.

  • Tatiana Luján

I never thought I would see such babyheads in a Nicole Kidman pic.
Still, remove the batsign and it’s a WERQ for me.

    • makeityourself

Ever since the second boob job, there are babyheads.

      • Tatiana Luján

        Second boob job?

  • OrigamiRose

I thought she really rocked this, even while I agree it’s a little **too** busy.  Sometimes it seems she sticks with the same wheelhouse, so a dramatic change up was nice to see.

And is it me or do she and Keith seem more and more happy when they are photographed together?  He always has seemed a bit friendly; lately, though, she seems to have lost that poker-faced reserve and looks like she is letting her guard down when they are side-by-side.  That too is a nice change of pace too.

  • Alyssa

I agree that for me, this look had me screaming WERQ until I started noticing the details…especially the waist detail. But it’s very high impact & she looks amazing, so I’ll forgive the oddities of it!

  • Belvane

Hers was the first look I saw last night that didn’t bore me. Finally, someone who dressed for the OSCARS! The one night a year (okay, two if you count the Met gala) where you shouldn’t be understated, where overstated is a virtue. She looks like a Movie Star. That said, now that you’ve shown us the Batsign, I can’t stop seeing that.

    • makeityourself

I reacted similarly.  She really went for it, and I love her for that.

  • Judy_J

I like it except for the gold thing at the waistline.  Take that away, and it would be perfect.

  • filmcricket

My only real problems are the Bat-signal and her hair. I love the detail at the bottom and am not bothered by the jewelry.

  • anotherkate

I loved this on TV and I love it now. I think she looks like a sexy golden oil slick, and YES I mean that as a compliment. I think it was wise to go softer with the hair.

  • HobbitGirl

YES to the Batman thing. It’s so distracting. And I wish she’d go back to red hair. It would give her a pop of color.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OLSER5H3A6FPBAZOEIQIOBHAYM Elizabeth Rust

I said “WOW!!” out loud when I saw the first picture, though the closeups did make me want to – not take it back, but lower the volume a bit. (From a distance it has a liquid-metal or even glazed porcelain look that’s just stunning, but when you can make out the sequins it’s not quite as cool.)

    So, “Wow!”

    GoryDetails

  • Girl_With_a_Pearl

Yikes!  This looked so much better on television last night.  The bottom of this dress looks so odd.

  • snarkykitten

Don’t like the Batman symbol on her tummy, but otherwise this dress is bangin

hah…didn’t even realize you guys already pointed out the Bat Signal!

  • margaret meyers

I love this dress, and Fashionista has it on their worst list.  Now really, I can see maybe not likeing this dress (they called it oily), but how could you say it was a worst dress?  Her body looks amazing in it.  A worst dress has to be doing something really wrong.

  • Tamara Hogan

THANK YOU! When I saw this dress, I said to The Boy, “Why is there a Bat Signal on her stomach? Upset tummy?” I think the dress is over-ornamented and would look better without said Bat Signal and the scroll work from the knees down, but she looks absolutely scrumptious. Big thumbs up.

  • Zippypie

When I saw her, all I could think about were all those poor birds soaked in oil after a big oil spill.  I wanted to get some Dawn dishwashing liquid and hose her down.

The fit is fabulous.  The hair is sloppy.  The makeup is perfect – Naomi needed this makeup with her gown.

Can someone talk Nicole into going back to being a redhead?  Seriously.  The blond is looking really draggy.

  • jw_ny

kind of an oil slick dress…but I like it, well, except for the batman logo at her waist.  Don’t like her messy do either…the uneven part and all those flyway tendrils.  Too messy.

  • annrr

All I saw was the Batman symbol, seems like such an after thought. And I agree the jewelry is all wrong. It is just ok for me

  • ninja_girl_01

I think she was trying to remind us that she once was in Batman…

  • MilaXX

I didn’t notice the swirls at the bottom last night either, but I like her hair a lot more in pictures than I did last night.

  • mhleta

I liked this on TV too, but am struggling a bit here. I’m willing to over look anything negative, though, because her hair and face are finally beautiful again, and I was beginning to think that was no longer possible. This is where her beauty lives. She should never go back to the flat-ironed hair and the exposed forehead. It’s all about softness with her hair and face.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

I can’t get over how shapely and striking she looks here. There are some oddly overdone elements of the gown, but at first glance, she looks really stunning.

  • Nancy Dunn

I love the dress, but don’t like her hair. From afar, she looks messy. Up close, her face looks fine, but my first impression was sloppy hair and face.

  • ojosazules

Not sold on this dress, but she is working the hell out of it. She looks fucking amazing.

  • formerlyAnon

She looks better than usual, to me. He needs to get his jacket altered, shouldn’t be that much pull when it’s buttoned.

There’s something about their complementary bottle-blondeness that makes me think of aging hippie-hipster-surfers (who are sunscreen fanatics) who for some reason have been scooped up from the boards/bikinis/tees shop they manage and groomed and dressed for the red carpet.

  • http://twitter.com/BigBearSpeaks Big Bear

What is that Batman thing? At first I thought it was a fanny pack. I would prefer that it was because then it would at least have a purpose!

  • http://twitter.com/aStudiobytheSea a Studio by the Sea

Too shiny and the details are ugly and somewhat incomprehensible.  Why the gold Klimt swirls, why the gold cut out on her tummy? This is an OUT.

  • MaryanneGirl

You know, I can’t find anything I don’t like about this. I thought it was a home run, especially (as stated in the post) opposed to anything pastel, (considering she refuses to do anything but washed out blonde hair). I get what you’re saying about the little details  you may not have noticed previously, but I just thought this dress was stunning. Go on with your sequined self, Nicole!

  • Daktari100

It seems a bit inspired by the style that would be more suited to her husband’s genre, meaning she would fit in nicely at the Country Music Awards.  And that is not a compliment.

  • BayTampaBay

On TV last night when she presented this dress, hair &makeup was a WERQ.

    I thought she looked stunning.

  • pylgrym

Y’all read way too many comics! Who can look at this woman and even think about batman?

  • jilly_d

Nailed it, guys. I loved tthis on TV but it looks kinda bad in the harsh light of day. I will say that it’s wonderful to see her looking slightly curvier than usual, instead of rail-thin. She’s glowing!

  • DTLAFamilies

This looked incredible on TV. I really like it in the still photos but when she moved the look became a total WERQ for me.

  • Corsetmaker

Klimt! She looks straight out of a Klimt painting. Love the swirls, the straps are wide enough for a bra so she’s all in place and I’m fine with the jewellery. The only bit I don’t like is the sequinned belt buckle shaped thing.

  • Imasewsure

Gorgeous – agreed and an almost-WERQ because of the over-bling… still love it on her though

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3QK7O6OXEX3AYERJWQUXBSVCTY Candy Kane

I’m not saying Nicole Kidman is Batgirl, I’m just saying we’ve never seen Batgirl and Nicole Kidman in the same room.

  • carolynmo

Maybe it’s a tad tight? Still very gorgeous.

  • peachy

    la brea tar pits.

    • PeaceBang

That’s EXACTLY what my friend said last night.

  • Pants_are_a_must

This is really a dress for stage. Not even a red carpet; just stage. It’s full-impact in the limelight. I’m giving her a pass because she was due to present and knew this wasn’t a dress for daylight.

  • unbornfawn

    This looked better on TV.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

It looked like a muddy mess to us last night.

  • GorgeousThings

Truly, she was born to wear L’Wren Scott.

Of course, now I can’t unsee the batman symbol.

  • Yuval Dinoor

I don’t know… I still think this is eye catching and gorgeous, but I’ve always been one for glitter so I’m no fair judge :)

  • mila_8

I love, love, love the liquidity of it…like liquid obsidian.  Plus by the time she walked the carpet I was ready for a wake up.  Shake it up, she did!

  • Trisha26

I just object to her hair, don’t know what’s going on with that, but it’s just not “right.” Anyone else notice the gold swirl motif matched that center platform on stage? Coincidence?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=603005248 Jeff Warhurst

She reminds me of a Klimt painting.

  • LinXGUA

But i still think it looks like she’s a survivor of an oil spill?

  • MaryAtRealityTea

I kept thinking that gold waist sequin cluster was a trick of the light last night. Now that I see it is a design feature I am perturbed. It’s like a tiny orb on her uterus. It’s a little creepy fairy story, no?

  • http://twitter.com/TheSaraBreuer Sara Breuer

Can we talk about Keith’s highlights? How can a woman who has such intimate knowledge of the miracles of cosmetic and hair procedures and products allow that to happen to her mate?

  • Call me Bee

She is stunning in this, though she has the same housewife har that others last nihgt had.  I guess that’s the fashion now.
Anyhoo–Miss Nicole looks smart and sassy.  And–she brought the girls out to play–in a good way.

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

    Love it!

…But I’m also a sucker for Mr. Klimt, and therefore, biased in favor of this dress.

    • Lilak

Oh, me too … I liked this a lot, but it wasn’t until I saw the walking-away view (which I wish TLo had posted) that I gave this a big thumb’s up. The Klimt-y swirls were given such a nice punch of drama in the back!

  • Indigo54

These two make such an ugly couple.

  • capybara_cafe

Wow, I can’t believe how different it looks in pictures. I didn’t even see the swirls on the bottom last night. I kind of like them…

  • Donald Wannagat

Darn…I always forget and sign in with my husband’s account.
    Mary :-)

  • Markatha

I loved this look. She was gorgeous.  On the show the dress looked like some kind of liquid metal.  She was fabulous while presenting.

  • Anniebet

Rather odd embellishment on the front, which could ruin a less spectacular gown. She looks beautiful, head to toe. Those earrings look heavenly on her.

Maybe she could lend some of that Botox she’s not using anymore to her friend Naomi?

  • Jessi03

I didn’t see the bottom on tv, but last night, she was my best dressed.  She looked gorgeous in that, and her face looked kind of normal and very pretty!

  • Susan Crawford

Compared to all the marshmallow Easter-egg colors, Ms. Kidman looked dramatic and VERY cool. She and that other tall drink of Perrier L’Wren Scott are made for one another. While some might argue that the gold jewelry was over the top, I can only say I thought it finished her look with a real flourish. And that it belongs in my collection.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/SIW6UBBGHMNFAAOH2KEMRMVMCU beawin

Black sequins look like a wet dive suit. Maybe it’s the camera.

  • Pterodactyl111

The theme of the night was apparently “sparkles”, which is a theme I support 100%.

  • SapphoPoet

She looks wonderful. But I hate her hair.

  • kathrineb

I seem to be looking at different pictures. Don’t like this at all.

  • DesertDweller79

If only it didn’t have the Batman patch.  It would still be too busy, but it would be acceptable then.

  • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

Dude, she’s got a secret Batman homage worked into her dress! How can this not be a WERQ?!?

  • RzYoung

This was my fav of the night, I just love the Klimt-esque swirls

  • decormaven

To me, that is one of her personal bests in terms of makeup and hair. And the dress is fitted to perfection. Who is her stylist?

  • SistaT

That does look like the Batman symbol.  Still, she looks like she was dipped in black paint and rolled in sequins and that’s a compliment.  It fits absolutely perfectly.  It’s over the top drama and glamour.  Ridiculous excess and I just love it.

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

She looks like an engine block to me; too oily.

  • Cathy S

I’m not too crazy about the bodice, but I love the skirt.

  • Jenna621

I’m glad her face has relaxed back to a natural look.  She looks really beautiful.

  • julnyes

    She looks fabulous.
I can’t deal with his hair.

  • http://robot-heart.tumblr.com heartbot

I wish she’d paired this dress with red hair and the makeup she had in Practical Magic.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1832126583 Mary Lauer

I thought it was too tight. Her boobs are swelling out over the top. 8-(

  • http://twitter.com/meredeth_gwyn Meri

    The golds don’t match. :|

  • dschubba

The sequins hit a point of diminishing returns and never looked back.

  • libraangel

Well, better for her than usual, but I don’t like the pin-like detail on her middle, and hair – brush – needed! And when did Ms. Kidman get so bosomy all of a sudden?

  • guest2vists

Everything was stunning except for that blip of glitter on her tummy. Why!  There was plenty enough sparkle and glitter without
the Batman-insignia. I thought she looked wonderful too – hair and make-up.
